Apple's iOS 7 Controversy

  • If you’ve spent a decent amount of time in the online tech community, you’ve probably heard people say things like, “iOS 6 was the best version,” or, “everything has gone downhill since iOS 6.” And that’s actually a fairly common sentiment among people who believe that iOS 7 was a misstep by Apple that they’ve never recovered from. And while I personally don’t share that opinion, it’s worth exploring why iOS 7 received so much criticism and how it became the most controversial iOS release in history.
But before we talk about iOS 7 and all of its radical changes, we have to establish some context. Because if you’ve only become an iPhone user in the past few years, you probably don’t understand the big deal with iOS 7 since it’s so similar to what the iPhone’s operating system looks like today. So let’s talk a little bit about iOS 6. Which was released in 2012 and featured what’s called a skeuomorphic user interface. Meaning elements of the operating system were designed to resemble real-life objects. For example, in the Notes app, you would type on a virtual notepad. Complete with yellow lined paper bound by brown leather. And in the Newsstand app, which was replaced by the News app in iOS 9, you’d find a virtual bookshelf finished in a light brown wood texture. Now skeuomorphic design elements like these had been around since the very first iPhone in 2007, so it became a quintessential part of what defined the iPhone.

As an iOS engineer working on apps well throughout that era, you’re forgetting a key issue with iOS 7. The radical UI/UX changes in such a short time made developing apps for iOS hell. Often apps had to maintain compatibility with both design languages, UIKit was extraordinarily buggy, and app experiences just felt very unpolished and broken, especially from Apple’s own apps. It wasn’t until iOS 10 that things SLOWLY began to take shape into the level of cohesion and polish that we’re only just now starting to have again with iOS 14.

Dracogame UI and UX aren't the same thing. That's a false equivalence. iOS 6 looking like it's predecessors has nothing to do with its function, just as iOS 14 is very similar-looking but massively more usable than iOS 7.

I remember when my dad updated his iPhone from iOS 6 to 7. He hated the update. He would complain about the design all the time. When I saw it at the time, I thought it was awesome. To me, it was a much-needed modern refresh and made the system feel much more premium and new and was the future of design. I was really disappointed when I found out my iPod 4 couldn't update to it :(

I donno, with how many of these videos he's making I just wish he'd invest in a decent microphone rather than whatever I'm hearing or rather how poorly it's always recorded. Literally no other big tech content creator or company history reviewer is this bad. Bright Sun Films and Cold Fusion do it well and even Company Man with his unsure naisally sounding voice records properly. It just sounds like he's using the bare minimum with reflects in oversights like getting the whole program wrong despite seeing the interface clearly.

I remember when I had updated to iOS 7 on my iPad 2. I was 15years old at that time, It was such an iconic moment. I noticed the change right when I hit the update button because the Apple logo had changed from this 3Dish design to a flat one and I was super excited. I had no idea that entire operating system had a design overhaul similar to that of the minimalistic design of the Apple Logo. I enjoyed every bit of iOS 7 afterwards, it felt fresh and futuristic. I even enjoyed the design changes from iOS 7 to iOS 8. It was from iOS 11 that it felt like things were going downwards… for instance when they took out semi-transparent overlay effect of the Notification Center and just replaced it with the lockscreen wallpaper. It just took more of the cool features off iOS 7-9 and replaced it with more boring ones. It wasn’t for the sake of minimalism either. But I’m sure with Craig Federighi being in charge of iOS, he might make changes for the better in upcoming version of iOS. I like what he did with iOS14 and iOS 16.

I remember back in 2013, I had a iPad 2 and I used to be a elevator photographer. When I heard iOS 7, I loved it. The sad news is I had to wait like 2 more weeks-ish for Beta 2 since Beta 1 was only for iPhone/iPod Touch back then.
Then I think I followed the beta cycle of iOS 7 for a bit, went back to iOS 6-ish if I remembered, then back to iOS 7 until the final release. Time flies man.
Today I have a iPhone and yes, Apple never changed the entire UI of iOS from 7 years ago, though overtime they probably updated some of the icons and UI design, especially the fonts (I remember there was 2 years of Helvetica Neue from 7-8, then iOS 9-onwards would be San Francisco as of today!)

IPhone 4 on iOS 4 looks pretty 21st century to me. If I whipped it out in 1996 then people would think I am a alien from out of space

Michael but the early 2010 people knew the iPhones of the late 2000s being the 3G/2G and it was kinda expected apart from the retina display which back in 2010 I spent a whole day on in the Apple shop binge watching the old RUclips app on iOS 4 📺 because I was so impressed with that iPhone than the previous 3 iPhones which felt tacky.

Ironic for the people that switched to Android when Google introduced material design and essentially went for the same effect as iOS.

I like both. I remember using iOS 7 for the first time and thinking it was so modern and beautiful. Now it's so background, I wish we had a new redesign with an unified language and message.

I remember being in 9th grade when ios 7 came out, literally my whole class of 66 people had iphones, mostly iphone 4S`s, everyone updated at school when iOS 7 got released. And immediately after updating everyone was like "what is this shit? Its buggy, slow, and i dont recognize anything of whats on my home screen" lol. First iOS 7 software was a fuckin mess when it comes to bugs... I loved the design right away, but damn it was buggy...

Can you make a video of the WatchOS history? It looks like almost everything is changed since the first version and features like the moving emojis, Glances, friends from the right button and more just disappeared. I’m sure many people will want that 😘

I would understand if you were referring to 6:25 (which if you look closely at the Maps icon, is Apple Maps which is exclusive to iOS 6 and not before which had the water droplets picture as the default) but the original comment wasn’t

I remember being a freshman in high school and downloading it as soon as I got home from school. I had a friend over and we both sat around for hours while the slow wifi downloaded the update. I was definitely not against this update. I actually felt it was overdue. Plus, I remember seeing what Android was doing around the same time with their design concepts... very similar idea there, so anyone who was upset and switched was probably faced with the harsh reality of progress.

I remember when I had my iPhone 4s and I updated from iOS 6 to 7. I loved the colours and everything, ran faster too. My only problem was how flat everything was. I also never had a problem with Apple maps either when it came out...way I see the whole thing is, Cook wanted to shake things up.
