I always tell my son 'One time funny. Second time you're jerk. Third time, now you're an ahole. And no one will want to be around you.' And I stand by it 17 years and counting.
Yeah, I told my son early on when he discovered April Fool's Day that it's ok if it's a silly joke that doesn't hurt anyone and everyone's laughing. The moment the target stops laughing, it's now harmful and not ok. The point should be humor for everyone, not humor at someone else's expense. So, that April 1st he pranked me by building a Mario level on his Wii that was very short but hilariously impossible to finish. Instant death. We had a good laugh and then I let him know that was definitely the right kind of prank. Comedy gold for an 8 year old.
I think the biggest bit of bullshit was the boss "talking" to him about his outburst when she was in on it.
Why was it just him and not people at random until everyone got one? Singling someone out and then not giving back stuff until next day seems like things could have been handled differently on the coworkers part. NTA
NTA. Workplace hostility to single out one employee.
Nothing like having everyone gaslight you for shit THEY were doing! WOW
Prank failed because a) it targeted only one person, so could be viewed as harassment, b) did not immediately return items needed for work, which directly interferred with productivity, c) didn't care if the one getting pranked was having fun, which becomes bullying at this point, and d) boss looked the other way instead of stepping in to prevent a toxic work environment, which is part of their duties...you know, something they actually get paid for.
This is why most working environments don't tolerate pranks because it requires exceptional skill and tact to do successfully.
It would have been way funnier if everyone in the office got one instead of all of them going to OP.
I'm going NTA. Don't touch my stuff and there won't be a problem
When no one would give him his keyboard back and he had to get one from storage to be able to continue to work that is when they took it to far. The 2nd cake is when it hindered his work and became more then just a prank.
NTA!
The second time, they kept his keyboard and he had to search for a different keyboard. His keyboard wasn't returned until the next day. This is completely out of order. Then, they continue to harass him by making more of his things disappear a third time. I would go HR and put in a formal complaint as they are targeting him and harassing only him.
One time is fine...repeatedly doing it is abusive and they are just making fun of him. It is a bs thing to do. His mate is nit a great friend and plus the boss knew about it.
When I was about 20, one of my co-workers took a black marker and drew eyes and eyelashes on my glasses. I needed my glasses for reading and driving (at that time - full time when I hit my 30's). I was not happy. It took a lot of elbow grease to get those marks off the lenses. My supervisor had to take him aside to let him know that wasn't nice. I don't know if they could be cleaned up these days with a lot of the lenses being some type of plastic.
I'm so sorry. That's way too far. That's hovering your eyesight, and destruction of property. It wasn't just "not nice".
I would have lost it. 0-100 immediately. Nobody messes with my glasses.
NTA. I’m AuDHD. I need structure and routine in order to feel safe and comfortable. Moving things from where I’d placed and expected to find them would damage any trust and make me feel unsafe around them.
For me it is the fact that it doesn't seem like anyone else was targeted and they didn't return his real work items until after that work day was over. NTA, this could be classified as targeted harassment. I would have thought the boss would have told them to back off if only to keep the company in the clear legally.
NTA he should make a formal complaint to HR for harassment and office bullying. I would have flipped my shit on the mouse, can't stand people violating my space and touching my stuff. And who does a prank on the same person more than once? That's targeting right there. Cake would have hit the fan.
OP is NTA and let's do the same to the manager to see how funny she thinks it is! She knew and allowed it. Makes her just as culpable and gives her no grounds to call OP on the carpet about any of his reactions! That is not professional in any way, shape or form. And it is not funny and a waste of good cake. Who wants that greasy frosting all over your hands, then all over the office? Just no!
NTA. One time is great. Leave it at that. It's hilarious then, and didn't hinder his work. The next time, it has already gotten old. Especially since it did hinder his work. No one else was targeted. Then he was gaslit for reacting to a joke going too far.
NTA, weird that they only did it to OP. I can see myself being ok with it until I have a busy day, a deadline, a panic where I have to get through “which of my necessary office supplies is cake” before being able to get to work.
I would be infuriated. I grew up being gaslit every which way I turned, it destroys your ability to trust yourself. This isn't a prank, OP never found it funny after the first time and made that clear. It's harassment at that point. I might have broken down in tears, honestly. If his manager knew why didn't THEY put a stop to it? This is highschool crap. My brother was harassed by classmates until he finally blew up, at which point of course the teacher tried to get HIM in trouble. I fault the manager and coworkers, not OP.
NTA! The first time or two could be laughed off. After that, replacing items needed to actually do your job had crossed a line and should never have happened. It's sad the boss didn't tell the coworker to stop (provided he knew who it was of course). There is such a thing as carrying a joke too far and that's where this one went. You're not in the wrong here OP.
If I had to go out of my way to find a replacement keyboard that would piss me off.
Honestly, some people just don’t enjoy knowing that others are repeatedly touching and moving their things.
It makes getting the workday started more difficult.
The frustration definitely should have been enough, especially as that time he had to borrow a keyboard from storage. So these pranks are affecting his ability to do his work. That is way out of bounds.
Not producing the real keyboard immediately after the prank was an a--hole move. Everything after that was WAY TOO MUCH. I think OP gave his coworkers (especially his friend who should have known better than the limit had been reached) ample warning that he'd had enough, and by then, it was impeding his work. Shocking that the manager dressed him down about his outburst--if I'm a manager, once is okay, twice is pushing it and three times is way too much. OP is NTA
NTA, but this really reminded me of Jim and Dwight from The Office😆
I'm trying to work. Don't mess with my stuff. Half the time I don't wanna be there anyway. Don't make it worse lol
Honestly NTA. They didn’t even give him some oh the things until the next day. Once you mess with someone’s ability to do their work it quits being funny and starts being annoying.
I do think it’s cool that some people are so good at decorating cakes that they can make them look like real objects. That said, once is funny, twice makes you a jerk.
NTA. It is getting old!
the timeline was off, see, they did too many too close together. You have to spread it out, let the memory of cake fade before.... BAM more CAKE!
Also needed to spread it around It shouldn't always be the same persons stuff
If it was happening to others I’d understand. But it was only OP. At that point it harassment and bullying
As a pie person. This is a lose/lose.
I WANT UPDATES ON FOLLOWER SUBMISSIONS
These coworkers are children. One time, fine. Once he became irritated, it should have stopped. The boss is dbl wrong!
They didn’t “read the room” and kept poking the bear. NTA.
Jim keeps putting my stuff in jello!!
No. Third time was bullying
He didn't like it. They should have stopped.
Boss was in on it😮 complaint to HR defo
NTA, it's funny the first time but to keep doing and they had to see the frustration on his face. Also Why did the prank OP ? Was there a reason was it was him?
What is funny to one isn’t necessarily funny to someone else. In this instance was they went to long and didn’t want to read the room.
Sounds like a lot of people don't have enough work to do...
NTA.
The first time his mouse was in his desk drawer. The prank was relatively harmless. The second time he went an entire day without his keyboard and had to dig up a backup. That isn't funny. Pranks shouldn't impede a person's ability to do their job.
NTA. One time is funny, maybe two...after that i'd be pretty annoyed. I don't know if i'd flip like that, but i'm not in that situation. I don't think the coworkers were trying to be jerks, but they definitely took it way to far
That are not pranks that is bullying, nta for snapping
NTA…he has the right to get upset. A formal complaint to HR will set this right. Workplace bullying and harassment is just a not ok…even if everyone else thinks its funny. the person being pranked does not and its causing a hostile work environment.
I dunno, I'm biased. As someone with Celiac Disease, I'd be super upset if someone kept contaminating my desk like that. I wouldn't be able to trust anything on it, so I'm with OP. NTA. Once or twice, ok, haha, funny prank. But to keep doing it over and over and over to just one person? That's harassment, and I think the boss should have had his back.
Look, when you pull pranks, you have to make sure the one you’re prancing is having fun too. It sounds like OP never really thought this was funny and they just bulldozed on anyway. They were being selfish on his expense. Not ok.
That'd get old real fast. They need to stop with the cake fakes
If it was real, it’s office bullying to single out one person and laugh behind their back while pranking them over and over.
OP not thinking the video was funny should have been a red flag that this would not go over well and after he showed frustration. NTA.
💛
While it was funny one or two times, it was annoying after that. The boss is also an a$&hole if she was in on it. Allowing the other employees to continue to essentially ‘torture’ the OP was uncalled for.
Can anyone say HR⁉️
I’m so sick of the prank crap!! It’s an official they’re supposupposedly adults. Grow up
Doesn’t sound real
lol I guess I’m the only one who thinks he’s the eh hole. I think it’s funny and not a big deal.
Erm nta once is funny twice is blae third time too far so nta
Not appropriate to scream like that in an office and depending on where he is, his coworkers could file a complaint against him for creating a hostile work environment (which btw could be why the boss pulled him aside for screaming). Nta for getting annoyed, but not a smart way to handle this and who knows how outwardly annoyed he looked to his coworkers because he didn't mention asking them to stop before yelling. In fact, he even complimented them (begrudgingly) the first time.
No, once they knew you were iratated, it needed to stop. It was no longer funny.
