The Obsession With Looking Rich, Wealth Aesthetics and Overconsumption

  • Thanks to influencers and celebrities, many people look to project a rich/wealthy aesthetic on social media. In this video I discuss, the obsession with “looking rich,” influencers who fake their wealth and how this leads to insecurity and anxiety from the working class who cannot live up to this unrealistic standard of living. From the TikTok "old money aesthetic" trend to social media flex culture as a whole, the obsession with looking rich is ruining our individuality. This obsession leads to an overconsumption of products due to influencers constantly showing off "must-have" products on TikTok.

The amount of content creators in their 30s with stuffed animals in the background of their videos is astonishing.
Lots of people now think getting married in your mid twenties is really young, too! Even i, at 32, find myself thinking that, when I didn't preciously think so.
I think as many traditional milestones such as home ownership have become delayed, our need to take responsibility at an adult level has decreased and so has our feeling of control. People act younger because the normal social pushes to move forward aren't happening anymore, and its harder to make them happen.
Additionally, people born after, say, 1980 or 1985, just seem to be highly sensitive (not all a bad thing) and less resilient. They haven't bounced back from generational trauma, because they seem to recognise how bad it is rather than perpetrating it unthinkingly like previous generations. And of course they were not taught to have resilience because the previous generations thought it was inbuilt.
Many hold off on having kids because of this (i am one of those people, getting my head on straight took a very long time), as well as the economy. So that's another reason.
The trauma also means as they grow up they try to hold onto or reclaim things that are part of their childhood as a self-soothing mechanism.
There is so much going on with my generation.

My 12 year old daughter started asking for a Stanley cup recently. We are not based in the US, so a Stanley would cost just over 2X the retail price by the time it gets here, then there's the dollar exchange rate... yeah, no way in hell am I spending that kind of money on a cup. My attempts to explain opportunity cost and teaching her to question whether the things being promoted to her are worth the price or objectively better than available alternatives are probably going to drive us apart. Maybe she'll even cancel me for the rest of her life. Oh well.

    • @schoo9256
      @schoo9256 5 месяцев назад

@@user-kpkxgtjif you don't mind some unsolicited advice, if I were you I would get her to do a buttload of chores for extra money, then when she has saved up enough for a Stanley cup, ask her if she feels all the effort she put in was worth it. If she still says yes, she can buy the cup as it's her money, and she learns the value of working hard for what she wants.
If she says no, you can remind her that she used to want it super badly just a month ago, and she learns how little time it takes for the novelty of impulse purchases to wear off.
You could also say if she raises half the money, you can loan her the rest, with interest, and she can pay you back over time. If she takes you up on it, that might teach her about how credit puts the burden onto future you (but used wisely it is very helpful!).
My dad did this for me and we had a little folder for the paperwork (done on his home PC).

Couple things: 1) Wealthy people (especially young wealthy people,) get their style from poor people. Rich kids have anxiety about being born rich, and see “slumming it” as cool and transgressive. For example, the long colorful nails, gold chains and gold hoops that are popular now came from inner-city Black American style in the 1980s. Vogue did a story on that style in the mid 2010s and the rest is history. 2) I agree that workers in tourist hotspots can be exploited. Directly giving said workers generous cash tips can help make what they’re doing more worth their while. 🤑

As someone from Hawaii I can 100% attest to how tourism really dominates the state and it makes it an unaffordable place to live along with being on an island that has to have everything shipped. For reference, my parents told me milk's gotten up to $14 a gallon and that's on the military base where there's no sales tax. There are ways for residents to get discounts but it's still ridiculously expensive. There's also really nice areas that have been messed up due to one influencer taking a pretty photo and now everyone wants to. What makes it worse is that people doing the influencer photo shoots aren't even fully respectful of the people and area around them. I could go on and on about it, but it's definitely gotten worse with the raise of social media influencers.

After watching this video, I feel bad about the fact that I want to travel. To be fair, I am someone who wants to travel for the experience (not the photo shoot), and I legitimately want to immerse myself in a new culture and learn from it, but I also don't want to add to any existing problems. My hometown isn't really a tourist place, but housing has gotten prohibitively expensive because our state legislature wants to make us the next Silicon Valley. We've had so many out-of-state transplants that can pay cash that it's almost impossible to make a bid on a home if you're local, so I get it. I had to move away to be able to afford living, which isn't something anyone should have to do.

I really appreciated the frustration in your voice talking about the continued colonization and modern imperialism in places like the Caribbean and Hawai'i. Far too many people gloss over what is continuing to happen at the hands of colonizer mindsets that's contributing to political and environmental unrest and acting like those issues are a purely localized, local people, issue. It's so much bigger and it's difficult to know what to do to help fix it. From cruise lines, to millionaire/billionaires setting up their 2nd or 5th homes, to big companies, to consistent tourism, to retirees, to expats, to influencers, to celebs, and everyone in between...these political and environmental upheavels negatively impacting the actual, local, Indigenous peoples are coming from those sources.

She was taking several photos with different poses and you could tell everyone was getting annoyed with her.

watching this in 2024 and I've been binge watching your videos ever since! I personally think that there's nothing with documenting your lavish vacations and dinner dates because you will one day look back at them and remember how you had a good time, what's toxic is that these people would plan a trip just for the photos and not for the moment, which then pressures their audience to book a trip out of their budget just to satisfy their need to fit in, and the cycle goes on.

I am objectively wealthy. I have a very beautiful, fully paid off ranch and a Porsche collection, no kids and never married. I am also surrounded by wealthy people, the area where I live is full of multimillionaires. However, REAL wealthy people’s lives do not look like Instagram. No one I know wears designer clothes or shoes or bags. Many of us have very frugal living habits - that’s how we became wealthy in the first place. I have a Porsche collection but I still use powdered milk and shower over a bucket to save the water. I only use supermarket cosmetic products and usually the cheapest of those! I have so many life-long frugal habits. And most wealthy people are like that. Also, genuinely wealthy people are very private. We would never post on-line what the inside of our houses or garages look like!!! We don’t want anyone knowing what’s in there! I’ve never seen the inside of any of my wealthy friends wardrobes or garages on-line and I would be shocked if I did.
“Poor” people have a very Hollywood idea of what wealth really looks like and a screwed understanding of the relationship between wealth and spending. Wealthy people DONT spend their money (on frivolous things).

Powerful people dress well it gets you notice. People do business with people they are attracted to. Now everything your saying is right and I agree with you and I feel the same way you do I wish people would just live me. When i was at the mall yesterday a woman came up to be and told I looked so beautiful that she could not keep her eyes off of me etc. I wish this world was a kinder place but the reality is it's not the truth is if you want to do business and keep your job ladies please keep your appearance up it will take a woman far

And you’re just like wow, I can’t compete, I don’t have anything at that level of excellence going on in any aspect of my life. So why bother posting?
Especially when I was on Tiktok for a while, when the pan started. At first it was kind of fun, just posted silly things, things I enjoyed. Saw a lot of creative content from regular people. But as more users joined the app, more content came out with genetically, financially, aesthetically superior people just existing on camera. I started thinking, why bother? If I’m not top tier in looks, clothing, dancing, comedy, interesting life circumstance like those ppl who live in mansions and have 50 deer come to their houses to hang out…if I’m not even in the top 300,000 users in anything…what is the point of my existence on this app?

I'm pretty much online hermit who prefers content about games, arts and crafts, but even then a lot of stuff is focused on having something flashy and very expensive.
In case of gaming it's a lot of game consoles, big shiny setup and a lot of games (in case of more mainstream people it's AAA games that now priced $70 per copy). In case of arts it's eather drawing tablet that works as a second monitor (in case of digital artists), or a lot of very expensive utencils and often unnecessary products (for artists who work in physical media).
Plus crafts, in my case crochet, where youtubers have shelves worth of yarn, hooks and stuff I've never heard about.
When you look at it all and then look back at what you have... Sometimes it's kinda discouraging, because you'll never have what they use, and won't be as good as influencers because of it.
It sometimes takes a bit of time to remind yourself that sometimes it's skill issue on your part and it's more important to focus on what you can make with what you have.
Also I'm never downloading Instagram or tiktok exactly for this reason: I want my self-wortg not being evaporated.

I don't follow ig , every display of wealth , makes me nauseous, hypocrites, in a world where most of the people is poor ? And when we are having terrible ecology disasters everywhere , and do I have to look a silly person showing off money , spending millions in elephant skin bags ,yatchs , contaminating the sea , those jets ,and they fly to have a picture and a meal and go fly again , people like this that have no conscience of their impacts to the rest of young people watching how they can spend in a day what you can barely earn in a life ? And not doing any kind of ecological help ,etc ?
I think that the "I'm rich therefore better than you " era is coming to an end. We can no longer afford to be manipulated and support these kind of people, liking their stuffs , our attention is very limited and precious, if you are going to support people following them on social media , better be because they are doing anything to help , socially , environmentally, whatever, but this is the only people I follow and support.

That’s my tip.
