What is insane to me is how anyone could look at Sophia Richie's wedding and not think it looks incredibly expensive. Like...nothing about it says "quiet" to me

Yeah to me when people say “quiet,” they are really saying white girl. It’s still very visibly expensive to me, just that modern influencers adopt more “ethnic” (aka black and brown) looks; bright colours and different clothing/hair/makeup/nail styles
This is such a good point. We can’t talk about “old money” aesthetic and quiet luxury without talking about how how that is extremely white and excludes people of color or people who don’t “fit” Anglican beauty standards. It’s also very interesting to think about how race plays into this when you think about how this aesthetic has directly been contrasted with how the Kardashian-Jenners present themselves, who have been appropriating BIPOC for forever. Old money seems to me like such a gross thing to focus on because it’s VERY VERY thinly-veiled classism, racism, etc.
One thing posts about "appearing old money" always miss is that you can't really "pass" as old money because you are not old money. They literally all know each other. The social currency isn't the aesthetics (though not denying that there are certain "standards" that are Eurocentric and classist) but connections. I go to a historically elitist university and what people do when they make the first connection is to just start rattling off ppl you mutually know (no matter if they're UK or intl). Those "how to be classy" or femininity/how to bag a rich man accounts are every crazier because they don't realise it doesn't MATTER how you dress, you are not part of the circle and you will never be. This whole thing feels like a rebranding of hustle culture/fake it to you make it that misses the point that no matter how hard you try, it's capital that creates capital.
Right? Making an aesthetic/content about how to look rich or infiltrate rich circles is literally just capitalism once again selling us how nice it is to have money so we thirst more and slave more so maybe one day we can afford a single item we imagine the rich wear. It's ridiculous! And it's so sad how Succession is used for this glorification even though it is meant to expose the dark iniquities of capitalism.
yeah its all about knowing the right people, running in the same high social circles, having gone to prestigious schools your whole life.. the fashion/know if you know brand aspect of it is just the only thing we know because we can see it , but its barely the tip of the iceberg. And I agree the whole rebranding thing is a grift, its trying to get people to buy into the idea that they too can be rich and respected while making them participate in the whole system that makes them miserable to begin with. I'd be really curious what your experience at university is like!

"Social class reproduction" is the word-the rich stay rich by marrying ppl within their social circles (same goes with the poor and middle class)-whether from residential areas, private elite boarding schools/prep/universities, social clubs (sports, country clubs, society club, etc). You will NEVER be apart of their world no matter how "quiet luxury" your cosplay is
As someone who is middle/working class with lots of wealthy to rich (not yacht-rich, but villa in warm country rich) relatives with old money connections and a loooooooooong family tree and some nobility title shit: SO MUCH THIS.
Like even though my immediate family does not have a lot of money, we get gifted shit. We know the people and they know us. We get invited to shit, even though we never attend. It gets funny with my sister who works as a waitress at a really fancy restaurant/hotel and gets familial hugs by the rich customers/relatives to the shock of her coworkers.

Sophia Richie's story is depressing--not for the discourse around her style, for the fact her life story starts with who her father is, became public for who her boyfriend was, and seems to end with who her husband is. A woman completely defined culturally by men related to her.

It certainly makes life easier and safer, to have a lot in the bank/in investments. Still, one wonders whether Sophia might have wanted to accomplish something on her own steam, without a patriarchal name badge branding her. Perhaps she doesn't care and it's never crossed her mind as important, and if that's her true choice then that's fine. We'll never know, now.

This obsession for Old Money is so problematic. I feel like people do not have critical thinking skills when it comes to concepts. Old Money is associated with good taste because it presumes generational wealth creates heirs that are educated and thus can asses aesthetics appropriately. Nouveau Riche (the bourgeoisie) have poor taste because the first generation to get rich in a family is not educated, probably not alphabetised, have no school and no tradion of proper taste. no you’re so right they are literally the same thing. the difference is that nepo babies are famous. they’re on magazine covers, talk-shows, movies, music videos etc. they are a constant reminder of the industry connections us normal people don’t have, making it much easier for us to hate them. by contrast, million-dollar business nepotism happens completely out of our view so it’s easy to forget that it’s actually the same concept.

How is nepotism related to old money? In fact, old money obviously have connections but they have the education and qualifications to get the jobs. Nepotism babies did NOTHING to have that privilege and they "stole" that spot from others that are much more skilled and educated.

I have also heard that the “old money, quiet luxury” aesthetic is a survival tactic. Drawing attention to your wealth is the kind of thing that would have gotten you killed during past revolutions. Maybe death is not as much of a threat now, but closer scrutiny and more calls for wealth redistribution certainly still are.

Kidnapping and ransom is not entirely unlikely nowadays. And certainly a random attack is likely regardless. I say eat the rich, but on a personal level they're correct in thinking that being too conspicuous will just draw negative attention. I just read a book about a black boy who went to Eton in the 90s. He said that so many of the super rich kids there were absolutely psychopathic, but also very circumspect about their wealth. Mind you almost everyone there is rich anyway. But they still play the game.

Definitely, especially if you have kids. Bad folks could see a rich kid as a perfect victim to ask for ransom money from the rich parents. This is why people say you should never tell anyone about winning the lottery or anything where you suddenly got a huge sum of money, not only because of fake friends but also because it could lead to your death if you're not careful. There are many cases out there where people were murdered, kidnapped, whatever, because of their money. This is why celebrities and people who flaunt their wealth have a hge security, I mean I don't necessarily like the Kardashians but we saw it happen to Kim and how she had to fear for her life when security slipped up and I do feel bad for her as a person, since no one should experience this.

As someone who has worked in the luxury space, I can guarantee that “old money” rarely dresses like this in real life. Truly rich people are bopping around town in Target and Old Navy. They like their money where they can see it: in their bank accounts.
They are rich because they didn't spend it. If you spend old money, you can quickly become "no money". New money does not have that problem, as it is being generated as we speak.

the obsession with old money and "whispering wealth" is hilarious. i've brushed elbows with these people and let me tell you, money does NOT equal class. old money is such a different way of thinking. it's like coming back to school from winter break and they're talking about which $$$ ski resort they went to, if they were going international for a weekend, which house they were going to go to for the summer, etc. they lack a lot of basic life skills and common sense. i truly do not understand the obsession. you can always tell when people try to "fit in"
Too true. There is such a distinction when someone has a rich personality; education, manners, poise, etc. For some reason most of the wealthy people don't invest in these qualities when they make someone look, for lack of a better term, "well bred" and classy.

Aspiring to be old money is so weird to me. I don't understand the sense of pride that people could have to know that they had one savvy ancestor that made loads of money back in the day, and the whole family have been leeching off that success ever since. New money people are considered tacky, but at least it could be argued that they directly worked for what they have, rather than sitting on their arse and living off trust funds.
Neither old nor new money "directly worked" for what they have. You can't get to that level of wealth without exploiting someone else's work.
If I were to start making caveats about new money people not being that great either, it would distract from my point. The video is about the notion that old money people are somehow better than new money, my comment was explaining why I don't think that's true, and giving one example of why I feel that way. Not wanting to “class mix” is something that I’ve seen in people other than just billionaires.
I won’t talk too too much about the dirty details, but I knew a few children of millionaires, and children of upper upper middle class people, when I was a kid, and my family was… uh… definitely not in that price bracket at ALL.
I was uninvited from birthday parties, had my family’s car mocked by the children and their parents, snidely asked if I would be going to a “state school” (meaning a public university/college) when I was 8, and had the birthday gifts that I gave my friends laughed at and *thrown away*. Got laughed at when a gift card was turned down at a coffee shop and I had to put my items away, etc.
My family was just on the lower end of the same wealth bracket, (if not at the top of the next bracket down), as these people, and I was bullied and ostracized for it. By the parents far more than their children, one of them literally called me a “social climber”. And I was, like, 9. This aversion to “class mixing” is something that exists at many levels of society, it’s not limited to the extremely rich and famous.
(Please take all of this with a grain of salt as it’s just my experience, I’m sure there are people outside of the one group or two groups of clichey wealthy people that I experienced that are in that price bracket and are lovely human beings. I just didn’t happen to meet that many of them.)

To me it seems like those people were upper middle types who are very insecure about their position in life to have to act that way (although it may be different across US + UK). Here in the UK I know a few very wealthy upper class people and they are so down to earth even if their accent could cut glass. They all drive old Volvos or Polos and look a bit unkempt if I'm honest. They don't have anything to prove to anyone, so they just wear what they feel comfy in and drive something reliable. The family is good friends with people in the local area who would be considered middle class or even working class (like me!). One is even titled but never mentions it. It would be very declasse to act like the people you've described. One similarity is that their children do go to very expensive private schools.

i totally get you, my boyfriend is upper middle class and his parents blew a gasket when they found out we were dating bc they didn't want him mixing with people of a lower class (i'm lower middle class). my bf doesn't really care about class when it comes to friendships and frequently hangs with those of a lower class than him bc they're "more fun than the shallow kids in his class or higher that only care about brands and showing off" (his words 😅) that his parents make him socialize with. they discriminate against me for other things besides my class (race and religion) but i guess my existence threatens their effort of maintaining their high social status and trying to climb higher up the wealthy ranks
It’s funny how with the passing of time, the Vanderbilt family is now considered Old Money. When the Vanderbilt’s first became wealthy, the Old Money family from Europe, such as the Astors, took issue with the Vanderbilts and other New Money families. The European Old Money families saw the New Money as the new kids on the block who still had to prove they deserved a place in high society (and as other have pointed out, basically the way we view celebrities vs influencers).
Let's wait 100 years and Kardashians will be considered old money 😂

You’re absolutely right about class mixing Jordan! I work in an extremely affluent area in LA where the rich of the rich old money families frequent. The only time they mix with lower classes is when they’re holding philanthropic or charity events😂
Most people socialize within there own class. That’s completely normal.
Even in the small country I live in that’s true about philanthropic and charity events. Like funding events were by far the WORST thing I had to do working for a non-profit. You’re there with some really nice people working for good causes but you’re pitted against each other and you have to act like these mostly white men are so generous for offering funding that you know is just scraps to them and ignore them patronising you. Like they don’t actually care and it’s so evident. They’re just using the fact that you’d have a much easier time with a little more money to try and tie your hands behind your back and limit what you can actually do. They act like they’re supporting your cause but funding always comes with so many strings attached. It’s so bad that some organisations choose to go without that kind of funding entirely, even if it’s offered. They want to make sure you don’t upset the status quo. And to show off to each other of course, they often have their pet causes, and if you’re a representative of that cause you’re sometimes only there to be paraded around for show

My question is why does every "aesthetic" have to have such an elaborate backstory to it. I've seen this happen with the coquette and dark academia aesthetics especially. People can very easily emulate whatever they want through their fashion whether they're spending 30k or going to the thrift store. I think a lot of people are intrigued by "aesthetics" not because they love the fashion but because they think they will become a new person if they just start dressing like xyz. People are constantly chasing to be something they are not. I think it's fine to dress however you please, but the romanticisation of the "lifestyle" is what scares me more than the fashion.
I think it all comes down to the lack of community people are experiencing

Fashion is nothing more than a cycle- with the internet and the increasing instability of the economy, the trend cycle has sped up. Generally timing depends on how safe the majority of people feel financially- but trend cycles generally follow:
1. Preppy/old money/clean girl (recession/winter),
2. Return to individualism (start of rebuild/spring) this is when you see a slew of quick in and out trends. Escapism.
3. Counterculture, art, experimental fashion (people feel safer and more normal, feel comfortable trying and seeing new things./summer))
4. Designer mania. (Economy is unsustainable, but we're trying to ignore it//autumn)).

One critical point you forgot to note is that with old wealth, "breeding" is more important than money, there have been cases of people from prominent families losing all their wealth and still being highly respected in the old wealth communitiy. Like having that last name will open more doors for you than money will if you get my point. Money isnt everything to those people.

Never will I ever forget about my time working at an upscale art gallery. It was the WORST because the gallery could only be run by family members, and the family dude handling the gallery was completely out of touch. Had us bring scotch into his office at random times, denied us a microwave to heat lunch because it was useless (according to him), and brought us a slow cooker. The family was big old money and my dad knew a couple of people who were family friends with them and they did confirm how all sons were basically incompetent with the sole exception being the dude that was meant to succeed his father in the main family business. Got kicked out because I was apparently too expensive to keep as art advisor, which was hilarious considering my salary was not great
another thing that alot of people aren’t aware about is that when celebrities have big events (like red carpets, the met gala, weddings etc.) most of the time the celebrities aren’t paying for the garments out of pocket they borrow them from the fashion house and then return them when the event is over. it just pushes the facade even more to make people think that they’re casually dropping 100k+ on a one of a kind couture piece when they’re really not.

Very well said! I am American-British. I totally agree with you about the royal family! I also grew up in an old money family. My dad was new money (he was actually looked down on by my mom’s family until he made more money than them, and then they all loved them, hypocrites!), and my mom from old money. My mother was insanely abusive and my father was incredibly kind. I went to boarding school, and was always the black sheep. I got along with my dad. My brother and sister embraced the snobbery of old money. I wasn’t new money or old money. Frankly, I didn’t really care about wealth at all, other than it putting a roof over my head and food in my stomach. I just wanted to be a good person, someone who is as knowledgeable and kind as possible.
And let me tell you, coming from old money is not glamorous. Not if you’re like me, anyway. Not if you have a mother like mine. It a miserable, miserable existence.
If you’re a bad person who embraces the mean girl snobbery of it all, then yeah, sure, you’ll fit in and enjoy it. But if you’re a good person, if you like to read and study more than play tennis and gossip all day; if you like to actually do everything in your power to donate, volunteer, and help others, instead of just patronisingly talk about how the common people need help; if you refuse to conform to their superficial standard, if you like to show any sort of individuality - well, then you will find living amongst old money a very, very miserable existence, indeed. My mother actually dated a member of the Bush family and then tried to pawn him off onto me when she was done with him. She used to hit on all of my own boyfriends, every single one that I brought home. She even did it with my fiancé. And when I was a child, she brought pedophiles around me. She once invited a convicted pedophile to stay with us, someone who had been convicted of assaulting and kidnapping a girl the exact same age as me. When I told her he made me uncomfortable, she told me that I was too thin for him to be interested in me (her constant obsession with me being thin had given me an eating disorder), she told me that age was just a number, and him kidnapping the girl was part of a beautiful love story. Mind you this guy was in his eighties, and the girl was like 13. She told me to get along with him. He used to give me cigarettes, and she encouraged it. She and my dad divorced when I was 12, after a raucous marriage, in which she constantly cheated on him, and all of us kids were constantly walking in on her sleeping with the men she had my dad hire to build her houses or fix things or whatever. And those men were often very abusive towards me as well. The whole thing was such a cliche.
And of course, everyone in the community talked, so I had to hear from the other old money kids about how their parents were talking about how they didn’t know what my mom was thinking acting the way she did. Because everyone gossiped behind everyone else’s back. Everyone was two-faced. I would see this all the time at the country club -
Woman A and Woman B are talking badly about Woman C. Woman C comes up and they all act like best friends. Then woman A leaves and woman B and C start talking badly about A. It was ridiculous. So fake.
So yeah, even though tv shows glamorise the drama, it’s not glamorous. It’s just awful. And anyway, we shouldn’t live in a society with so much wealth disparity. No one needs Bezos amounts of money, and no one should be as poor as the poorest people are - especially in this day and age. If we stop having so many children, and we start implementing sustainable policies, we could have enough resources to live in a world where everyone could live comfortably, happily, with their basic needs taken care of, in a beautiful world. If the wealthiest among us gave up just a few of their most expensive luxuries, and we began taxing personal and corporate hoarded wealth that is doing nothing except sitting in banks stagnating (hurting the economy), we could give the 99% good homes, good food, a beautiful environment to live around that protects the animals and other species in it, clean water, decent medical care, and vital human rights.

I am also thinking about the race component of quiet luxury. Skin color singles people out as "outsiders" and even if they have wealth, they are excluded from the old money label. The immense vitriol Meghan Markle experienced comes to mind, and even the discounting of Lionel Richie lines up to me. Actually the “logo craze” was born out of hip hop culture I believe. Dapper Dan and others would (illegally) create custom logo pieces for celebrities and locals. Haven’t finished the video yet, but an interesting detail about “new” vs “old” money is that old money hides because it fears revolution. The rise of the old money aesthetic probably has something to do with the increasing threat of class revolution (ie: a lot of people are talking about wealth redistribution and socialism, etc). I’ve heard people theorize that the wealthy see how crazy the wealth gap has gotten since the pandemic and how the tides have turned regarding the public opinion of the wealthy. I think some of it comes off the dark academia trend tbh. With books like the secret history going viral (I know it’s been years but still); emulating that aesthetic is literally emulating wealth despite the warning in the book. One of the many reasons people end up romanticizing old money & quiet luxury while demeaning new money is because of how attainable they seem. Old money, for most of us, is a fantasy, something we cannot achieve in one lifetime. The only way to be old money is to have generational wealth, and most of us are not born into it, so we end up feeling very neutral about it. While new money appears to be more attainable. Taking the example of influencers, it seems way more plausible for an average Joe to become an influencer than to build a business empire (primarily by exploiting workers). We often see new money as our failure and as a reason for envy and view quiet luxury with rose-coloured glasses.

My grandmother was of noble origins, she was a countess and her family descended from the court of Charlemagne. What I could see is how absolutely thrifty and minimalist a person of noble origin or real "old money" is. She lived in Florence and could have access to many brands (starting with Gucci) that produce clothes/shoes and bags in Florence, but she preferred to have tailor-made clothes for her and her kids. She had immaculate taste and was her own stylist. She rewarded the work and the human relationship that was created with the craftsmen and was completely skeptical of the big brands that charge for the name and not for the work. She had a deep respect for people's work and know-how, because she could do absolutely nothing by herself. In fact, noble people know that they are eternal and very lucky children and are completely dependent on the work of others, so they have no arrogance. People of old money who believe they are on another level are considered by noble people to be "snobs" which comes from the Latin "sine nobilitate", without nobility, which refers above all to nobility of mind and generosity. My grandmother was close friends with people from all walks of life and, aware of her economic fortune, she always helped everyone personally, especially the most unfortunate people, such as prostitutes and drug addicts, who used to call her "mom". Yeah and look at our politicians most went through the basic Eton Oxbridge combo and are related to nobility in some way but are all selfish,bigoted and “classless” by the old money peoples definition. Yes thank you. People don’t realise the difference between educated people and actually just silver spoon fed people. Anyone can be a horrible person whether they are new or old money. I think it mostly stems from the fact that new money people are normally uneducated due to them being influencers, models etc while old money people are looked upon as sophisticated and mature just because they have stable jobs, which is only a myth. Most old money families probably raise brats for inheritance, nothing like their ancestors who work hard to get there.
I love old money in theory. The super classy people who exhibit every quality of good upbringing ever. They're nice, they're generous, they treat people equally, and they don't discriminate against people, nor is their money earned on the backs of others. They dress beautifully, they have cool hobbies, awesome skills, and are considered good people by all. But these people don't exist irl. I like my fantasy version, and I aspire to the fantasy version, not the reality.
They, in reality, are just a bunch of assholes with money who sneer and look down on anyone who isn't in their tax bracket.
I’d argue that part of succession is about how while the Roy family wants to appear old money, they are still very clearly new money to other very wealthy people in the show, aka the Pierce family as we see in season 3

I think actual old money families do care about how many generations the family has had wealth. It’s about familiar status/coming from a ‘dynasty’. In uk they often are or involved with the aristocracy etc. that definitely matters to them. They also have traditions in Europe/uk where 1 person will be the heir to the majority of the fortune as to not dilute the power.
But yeah the internet/TikTok is just obsessed with the stylistically lol
this is not super related but just reminds me of it, I used to model as a teenager (thank god I got out lol) and once did a photoshoot where I was wearing a specially made designer coat worth TEN THOUSAND euros (no labels of course, those who know know)! Absolutely insane, especially considering that the coat had been specially made and was not made super well so bits and pieces kept falling off and the stylist had to clip and sew things back on as we went so it wouldn't show on the pictures.
"quality over quantity" isn't necessarily true, they only wear their clothes once or twice anyway so it doesn't need to last that long. A lot of work went into it I think but it was not made to last.
I get no joy from watching people showing me things that i have no hope of ever experiencing.

As a cleaning contractor I have seen both old and new money. Both are as bad as each other. New thinks they can do your job and expects the work for cheaper. Old have Old things that need to be binned, so when they break its because you did something wrong. I have seen me cleaning a bathroom that was completely rusted for them to be happy with it. My moto is just get the job done and let them all be. If they are happy and give me no problems I couldn't care less. Xc
more than 15 years ago i studied at a place that old money people attended (Sciences Po), although they were not the mayority in several faculties, i don't know how it is nowadays. tbh that version of old money aesthetic looked similar to clothes i used to wear when i was a child in a family barely scraping by: lots of whites bcs it's easier to dump it in chlorine and make it look "new", browns and blacks to mask spots, clothes made of pure cotton and alpaca wool which i had because Peruvian. It made me realise taste is truly (re)constructed. glad i left lol
I think the recent pandemic also caused a huge shift in how we view wealth. No one wants to see rich people flaunting their money while thousands of people lost their jobs, were stuck at home, and having to suffer through an unpredictable virus. Maximalism also became a huge trend during this time while people were again stuck at home and many needed creative outlets. I think quiet luxury and stealth wealth has a lot to do with “hiding” your money and again furthering yourself from the masses. If maximalism and logo mania is cool for the average person then it’s no longer cool for the wealthy. I’m just tired of rich people in general lol
I used to work at a Loro Piana store in NYC. These people would come in and you could never tell if they were super wealthy on the street but would come in spend 1,000s of dollars

I'm not from an old money family but my parents are best friends wiyh people who are. To be honest they coulf care less about what people look like or wear. Its about manners, how a person treats others, with respect, humility and good manners. Anything else is seen as vulgar. The one main divide they are meticulous about is education. Someone with a great educational background (graduates of prep schools, ivy league unis or generally well known unis or overseas studying such as studying in Europe, canada or Australia)
Work around these atmosphere, us peasants are fleeting thoughts in their mind. Maybe a point of humor for a few seconds and then the topic changes. BTW everyone these wealthy people wear whatever they want like whatever. Someone’s dressed like a peocock, someone like they are homeless and someone dressed like they’re going to church. GASP rich people don’t all wear the same say beige & white clothes

In the UK, for instance, people like Boris Johnson are Old Money. They come from these long aristocratic lines and people still respect that pedigree even though most of the cash, land and property is long gone.
People still respect those types of people over actual millionaires and billionaires who have had the money for a while now. That's why so many Tory politicians like Jacob Rees Mogg and Rishi Sunak marry into wealthy families - there's a kind of Old & New Money political marriage trend happening here where the old aristocratic heirs are giving their pedigree to the nouveau riche and the nouveau riche are bankrolling these washed up aristocratic families.
That’s also what happened in the 20thcentury poor titles families would have their kids marry into newly rich usually American so they could restore their wealth and the Americans could get legitimacy from the title. Another example is Lady Diana and Dodi Fayed his father encouraged their short relationship since he was new money who wanted to join the British upper classes and what better way to do so then marrying THE most famous Old money British person.

I'm a film/tv grad and from what we studied a lot of television/film productions rent or borrow clothes/costumes (hence why you see so many pieces in period dramas used over and over across decades of film). Some costume departments use personal connections in fashion, thrifted pieces, or outlets to get discount. Some labels give clothes to productions for free (publicity etc.). Hope this helps!

My grandad technically comes from old money and my grandma grew up incredibly poor. They went to the same university (my grandad didn’t go a fancy university) and they fell in love. Some of the differences between the rich and poor included minute details like how you drink your whiskey (my gran loves telling me about how she thought she was being given a shot of whiskey when it was supposed to last ‘around midnight’- an hour).
They did not treat her well due to her lack of knowledge about the upper class. And when I met one of my grandads cousins (very high up in the Twinings company) he laughed at me because I didn’t know the difference between 2 cups of tea 😭😂.
I got gifted a pair of diamonds earrings from a friend and wore them to meet some old money family. They ripped me to shreds and I felt so awful after. Also, they were all addicted to substances and it was rough. This was all in 2018-2019 and I haven’t contacted them since
Another thing about wealth is they do not care about age gaps. It's "normal" for them, both new and old money, but in lower classes and every day life I'm side eyeing all the creepy 35 year olds trying to pick up 20 year olds at the club. An old friend of mine has a family member that got married to a 31 year old when she was 19, he had started dating her when she was 17, and that's AFTER he tried to get with her sister whose 2 years older and she rejected him. He was a family friend that was close with their family since before the girls had been born. Yikes.
EDIT: I wrote this thinking Elliot was in his 30's-40's, Sofia's 24 and he's actually 29, thought he was way older by the way he looked. Oops!
