What is insane to me is how anyone could look at Sophia Richie's wedding and not think it looks incredibly expensive. Like...nothing about it says "quiet" to me
Yeah to me when people say “quiet,” they are really saying white girl. It’s still very visibly expensive to me, just that modern influencers adopt more “ethnic” (aka black and brown) looks; bright colours and different clothing/hair/makeup/nail styles
This is such a good point. We can’t talk about “old money” aesthetic and quiet luxury without talking about how how that is extremely white and excludes people of color or people who don’t “fit” Anglican beauty standards. It’s also very interesting to think about how race plays into this when you think about how this aesthetic has directly been contrasted with how the Kardashian-Jenners present themselves, who have been appropriating BIPOC for forever. Old money seems to me like such a gross thing to focus on because it’s VERY VERY thinly-veiled classism, racism, etc.
One thing posts about "appearing old money" always miss is that you can't really "pass" as old money because you are not old money. They literally all know each other. The social currency isn't the aesthetics (though not denying that there are certain "standards" that are Eurocentric and classist) but connections. I go to a historically elitist university and what people do when they make the first connection is to just start rattling off ppl you mutually know (no matter if they're UK or intl). Those "how to be classy" or femininity/how to bag a rich man accounts are every crazier because they don't realise it doesn't MATTER how you dress, you are not part of the circle and you will never be. This whole thing feels like a rebranding of hustle culture/fake it to you make it that misses the point that no matter how hard you try, it's capital that creates capital.
Right? Making an aesthetic/content about how to look rich or infiltrate rich circles is literally just capitalism once again selling us how nice it is to have money so we thirst more and slave more so maybe one day we can afford a single item we imagine the rich wear. It's ridiculous! And it's so sad how Succession is used for this glorification even though it is meant to expose the dark iniquities of capitalism.
yeah its all about knowing the right people, running in the same high social circles, having gone to prestigious schools your whole life.. the fashion/know if you know brand aspect of it is just the only thing we know because we can see it , but its barely the tip of the iceberg. And I agree the whole rebranding thing is a grift, its trying to get people to buy into the idea that they too can be rich and respected while making them participate in the whole system that makes them miserable to begin with. I'd be really curious what your experience at university is like!
THANK YOU!! I've been saying this sm. Sophia and her now husband knew each other previously when growing up. "Social class reproduction" is the word-the rich stay rich by marrying ppl within their social circles (same goes with the poor and middle class)-whether from residential areas, private elite boarding schools/prep/universities, social clubs (sports, country clubs, society club, etc). You will NEVER be apart of their world no matter how "quiet luxury" your cosplay is
As someone who is middle/working class with lots of wealthy to rich (not yacht-rich, but villa in warm country rich) relatives with old money connections and a loooooooooong family tree and some nobility title shit: SO MUCH THIS. Like even though my immediate family does not have a lot of money, we get gifted shit. We know the people and they know us. We get invited to shit, even though we never attend. It gets funny with my sister who works as a waitress at a really fancy restaurant/hotel and gets familial hugs by the rich customers/relatives to the shock of her coworkers. Not well, otherwise I'd be thrown out of my pedigree, I mean family tree, for being a dirty anti-capitalist. Like, this is the only time they are even close to mixing class.
What I find really funny about the ‘old money’ aesthetic is just preppy style. Like this style has been popular for decades it’s just been rebranded. I also agree this idea of preferring one kind of rich person over another is ironic considering how often wealth comes from exploitation.
Sophia Richie's story is depressing--not for the discourse around her style, for the fact her life story starts with who her father is, became public for who her boyfriend was, and seems to end with who her husband is. A woman completely defined culturally by men related to her.
Wow, I’ve never thought of it this way. But you’ve got a point! I’m sure in private she’s her own person and stuff but in the public eye she’s only ever relevant because of the men she associate with!
@Willy Wonka Hard to feel bad about them when they're still rich and before she was known as Justin Bieber's wife she was known as a nepo baby model. Like she was never talented enough to be known for anything in particular. That's generally the case for these ladies. It's not like there aren't women who overshadow their husbands. Like ik they broke up but can you name Taylor Swift's ex? They were together for years and he's always been Taylor's bf.
@@yukikanegawa7470 'Hard to feel bad about them when they're still rich' fair point, that's one way to value and measure a life's worth. It certainly makes life easier and safer, to have a lot in the bank/in investments. Still, one wonders whether Sophia might have wanted to accomplish something on her own steam, without a patriarchal name badge branding her. Perhaps she doesn't care and it's never crossed her mind as important, and if that's her true choice then that's fine. We'll never know, now.
I have also heard that the “old money, quiet luxury” aesthetic is a survival tactic. Drawing attention to your wealth is the kind of thing that would have gotten you killed during past revolutions. Maybe death is not as much of a threat now, but closer scrutiny and more calls for wealth redistribution certainly still are.
Yes, very good point. And in this era of fame becoming a currency that even civs can trade in, cancellation or litigation is a kind of 'death' (of reputation, status & Ego, anyway).
Kidnapping and ransom is not entirely unlikely nowadays. And certainly a random attack is likely regardless. I say eat the rich, but on a personal level they're correct in thinking that being too conspicuous will just draw negative attention. I just read a book about a black boy who went to Eton in the 90s. He said that so many of the super rich kids there were absolutely psychopathic, but also very circumspect about their wealth. Mind you almost everyone there is rich anyway. But they still play the game.
Definitely, especially if you have kids. Bad folks could see a rich kid as a perfect victim to ask for ransom money from the rich parents. This is why people say you should never tell anyone about winning the lottery or anything where you suddenly got a huge sum of money, not only because of fake friends but also because it could lead to your death if you're not careful. There are many cases out there where people were murdered, kidnapped, whatever, because of their money. This is why celebrities and people who flaunt their wealth have a hge security, I mean I don't necessarily like the Kardashians but we saw it happen to Kim and how she had to fear for her life when security slipped up and I do feel bad for her as a person, since no one should experience this.
True. In France, when you are rich, you cannot brag about it, you cannot show it off like they do in north America. I always say it is due to the Revolution, when they beheaded their king and killed the aristocrats. Somehow, they still hide today...
succession is one of the very few pieces of media that actually get those whole “wealth whispers“ and “quiet luxury“ perfectly right. you will never see one of the core family characters wear anything with a luxury brand logo - yet their daily wear is worth multiple thousands every time. the attention paid to costume design is insane
It's especially funny when people talk about "old money" aesthetic in Russia. Like gurl, all old money either fled the country 100 years ago, or were killed. Old money who.
I wanted to add to the 'celebrities vs influencers are the new old money vs new money' that, just like old money, the prevalence of nepotism in celebrity culture means that hollywood-style fame IS actually inherited. When celebrities act old money, it's really because nowadays they kind of are... (Also omg luxury is never quiet, capitalism speaks volumes)
This obsession for Old Money is so problematic. I feel like people do not have critical thinking skills when it comes to concepts. Old Money is associated with good taste because it presumes generational wealth creates heirs that are educated and thus can asses aesthetics appropriately. Nouveau Riche (the bourgeoisie) have poor taste because the first generation to get rich in a family is not educated, probably not alphabetised, have no school and no tradion of proper taste. For European culture, seeming old money meant literally being nobility and latifundiar(landowner). It is so classist to appeal to this aesthetic. It is inhearently classist. Not to mention the especially racist American Old Money Esthetic cause how are you even gerationally rich in the US question mark???? Probably we all know. Even though I do not like the bourgeoisie, this idea of these people being rich and becoming their own class between nobility and commoners democratised capital ownership. If you are no longer (the old rich) economically better off, how do you distinguish yourself? You gatekeep rich good taste and culture, that you set the canon for
in Europe old money would also be build off the back of slaves, when anyone gets rich there is always someone getting exploited. like she said Bezos wouldn't be rich if he didn't treat his workers so poorly. Also like Casey said there is a strong racial component to the whole old money vs new money discussion; Im thinking about how rappers in the 80s were framed by the media as less classy/thug-ish etc bc the old money folks wanted to segregate themselves from the nouveau rich
@@emmap6866 ofc wealth is built over exploitation. In Europe when we talk really old money we can mean nobility way before the slave trade. Ofc british/western european colonizong countries did benefit, I meant the US old money is inherently build upon it
@@hustonli3913 I forgot the O 🙄 edit- I don't understand french slang especially short versions for the internet so well so all you said after was hard to comprehend:)
Aspiring to be old money is so weird to me. I don't understand the sense of pride that people could have to know that they had one savvy ancestor that made loads of money back in the day, and the whole family have been leeching off that success ever since. New money people are considered tacky, but at least it could be argued that they directly worked for what they have, rather than sitting on their arse and living off trust funds.
If I were to start making caveats about new money people not being that great either, it would distract from my point. The video is about the notion that old money people are somehow better than new money, my comment was explaining why I don't think that's true, and giving one example of why I feel that way. That's all.
@@Shauniiiiiiiii no the idea is that old money aesthetic is better than new money flashy boastful unclassy aesthetic..which is true...that being said both are equally stupid..everything related to luxury is stupid..cuz luxury makes no sense.
Not wanting to “class mix” is something that I’ve seen in people other than just billionaires. I won’t talk too too much about the dirty details, but I knew a few children of millionaires, and children of upper upper middle class people, when I was a kid, and my family was… uh… definitely not in that price bracket at ALL. I was uninvited from birthday parties, had my family’s car mocked by the children and their parents, snidely asked if I would be going to a “state school” (meaning a public university/college) when I was 8, and had the birthday gifts that I gave my friends laughed at and *thrown away*. Got laughed at when a gift card was turned down at a coffee shop and I had to put my items away, etc. My family was just on the lower end of the same wealth bracket, (if not at the top of the next bracket down), as these people, and I was bullied and ostracized for it. By the parents far more than their children, one of them literally called me a “social climber”. And I was, like, 9. This aversion to “class mixing” is something that exists at many levels of society, it’s not limited to the extremely rich and famous. (Please take all of this with a grain of salt as it’s just my experience, I’m sure there are people outside of the one group or two groups of clichey wealthy people that I experienced that are in that price bracket and are lovely human beings. I just didn’t happen to meet that many of them.)
@@lizabee484 Sorry that happened to you, how horrible. To me it seems like those people were upper middle types who are very insecure about their position in life to have to act that way (although it may be different across US + UK). Here in the UK I know a few very wealthy upper class people and they are so down to earth even if their accent could cut glass. They all drive old Volvos or Polos and look a bit unkempt if I'm honest. They don't have anything to prove to anyone, so they just wear what they feel comfy in and drive something reliable. The family is good friends with people in the local area who would be considered middle class or even working class (like me!). One is even titled but never mentions it. It would be very declasse to act like the people you've described. One similarity is that their children do go to very expensive private schools.
@@nofancypants It was a long time ago, honestly it’s just wild to think back on it XD That’s so interesting the cultural differences between the US and UK when it comes to that tho! Maybe the people I knew felt less secure about their social and financial standing than the wealthy people you knew? Maybe it’s something that develops over many many generations of wealth, idk.
@GalPau I’m hoping they’ve grown and changed for the better since then, for their sake and others’. But I am not putting my energy towards trying to stay in touch with them just on the off chance that it happens lol
i totally get you, my boyfriend is upper middle class and his parents blew a gasket when they found out we were dating bc they didn't want him mixing with people of a lower class (i'm lower middle class). my bf doesn't really care about class when it comes to friendships and frequently hangs with those of a lower class than him bc they're "more fun than the shallow kids in his class or higher that only care about brands and showing off" (his words 😅) that his parents make him socialize with. they discriminate against me for other things besides my class (race and religion) but i guess my existence threatens their effort of maintaining their high social status and trying to climb higher up the wealthy ranks
no you’re so right they are literally the same thing. the difference is that nepo babies are famous. they’re on magazine covers, talk-shows, movies, music videos etc. they are a constant reminder of the industry connections us normal people don’t have, making it much easier for us to hate them. by contrast, million-dollar business nepotism happens completely out of our view so it’s easy to forget that it’s actually the same concept.
How is nepotism related to old money? In fact, old money obviously have connections but they have the education and qualifications to get the jobs. Nepotism babies did NOTHING to have that privilege and they "stole" that spot from others that are much more skilled and educated.
@@SoneBlink sir/ma’am you forget the fact that they get a lot of things through nepotism, if their family were to attend harvard they can easily get into it through their legacy, you forget the fact that they influence alot of thing around them to make sure their kid get the most luxurious stuff
It’s funny how with the passing of time, the Vanderbilt family is now considered Old Money. When the Vanderbilt’s first became wealthy, the Old Money family from Europe, such as the Astors, took issue with the Vanderbilts and other New Money families. The European Old Money families saw the New Money as the new kids on the block who still had to prove they deserved a place in high society (and as other have pointed out, basically the way we view celebrities vs influencers).
@@bbybella9937 back to her point of royalty being the real old money. Even though many of them had to marry rich Americans to save their homes and lifestyles
@@cashmoneychanel1209 Yeah like as soon as someone marries into old money they automatically become old money. The Vanderbilts married a Duke and were literally hanging out with European monarchs in the 1910s, like they are most definitely old money now since they are in those circles.
perhaps it’s just me, but marrying into old money from the working class sounds like a nightmare. the family will hate you and treat you like a cockroach, the prenup? forget airtight that thing is vacuum sealed. they’ll never see you as one of them and most of the time they will go out of their way to get rid of you. genuinely can’t think of anything worse, marrying someone with money is one thing but old money? no thank youuuu
You’re absolutely right about class mixing Jordan! I work in an extremely affluent area in LA where the rich of the rich old money families frequent. The only time they mix with lower classes is when they’re holding philanthropic or charity events😂
Even in the small country I live in that’s true about philanthropic and charity events. Like funding events were by far the WORST thing I had to do working for a non-profit. You’re there with some really nice people working for good causes but you’re pitted against each other and you have to act like these mostly white men are so generous for offering funding that you know is just scraps to them and ignore them patronising you. Like they don’t actually care and it’s so evident. They’re just using the fact that you’d have a much easier time with a little more money to try and tie your hands behind your back and limit what you can actually do. They act like they’re supporting your cause but funding always comes with so many strings attached. It’s so bad that some organisations choose to go without that kind of funding entirely, even if it’s offered. They want to make sure you don’t upset the status quo. And to show off to each other of course, they often have their pet causes, and if you’re a representative of that cause you’re sometimes only there to be paraded around for show
As someone who has worked in the luxury space, I can guarantee that “old money” rarely dresses like this in real life. Truly rich people are bopping around town in Target and Old Navy. They like their money where they can see it: in their bank accounts.
They are rich because they didn't spend it. If you spend old money, you can quickly become "no money". New money does not have that problem, as it is being generated as we speak.
Exactly - and even when it comes to expensive clothing that people with generational wealth do buy, there's not really an aesthetic that people not from money can recognise. It's fabrics, sewing techniques, fit, etc...
the obsession with old money and "whispering wealth" is hilarious. i've brushed elbows with these people and let me tell you, money does NOT equal class. old money is such a different way of thinking. it's like coming back to school from winter break and they're talking about which $$$ ski resort they went to, if they were going international for a weekend, which house they were going to go to for the summer, etc. they lack a lot of basic life skills and common sense. i truly do not understand the obsession. you can always tell when people try to "fit in"
Too true. There is such a distinction when someone has a rich personality; education, manners, poise, etc. For some reason most of the wealthy people don't invest in these qualities when they make someone look, for lack of a better term, "well bred" and classy.
Fun fact, Sophia Richie, in particular, was a bully in school. Can't give the reason I know without doxxing myself, but it's pretty annoying to see the meanest least hard-working people from childhood getting famous over nothing.
My question is why does every "aesthetic" have to have such an elaborate backstory to it. I've seen this happen with the coquette and dark academia aesthetics especially. People can very easily emulate whatever they want through their fashion whether they're spending 30k or going to the thrift store. I think a lot of people are intrigued by "aesthetics" not because they love the fashion but because they think they will become a new person if they just start dressing like xyz. People are constantly chasing to be something they are not. I think it's fine to dress however you please, but the romanticisation of the "lifestyle" is what scares me more than the fashion.
They were meant to be like that. Before the craze of season four there was a video and also an article that explained how the show deglamourized luxory making it almost bland and soulless.
From what point of view? Yours no? It’s supposed to be THEIR WAY OF DRESSING. I bet if they dressed according to what you think is "cool" they would say the same. In a free world people can afford to spend as much money as they want with clothing THEY LIKE. Or is it a dictatorship where you how can people dress?
Never will I ever forget about my time working at an upscale art gallery. It was the WORST because the gallery could only be run by family members, and the family dude handling the gallery was completely out of touch. Had us bring scotch into his office at random times, denied us a microwave to heat lunch because it was useless (according to him), and brought us a slow cooker. The family was big old money and my dad knew a couple of people who were family friends with them and they did confirm how all sons were basically incompetent with the sole exception being the dude that was meant to succeed his father in the main family business. Got kicked out because I was apparently too expensive to keep as art advisor, which was hilarious considering my salary was not great
I think the obsession with Old Money is very ressecioncore, something about that guaranteed security that comes wrapped in a $1000 you know if you know cardigan just hits.
Great point! I definitely think the inclination to idolize and drool over old money aesthetic content comes from fantasizing about how it would feel to be that financially secure and "safe," particularly during our economic era of great wealth inequality and financial instability. If someone can afford a closet of $5,000 coats, that same person certainly doesn't have to worry about inflation, rent prices, food insecurity, homelessness, bills, debt, budgeting... which is a position we would all love to be in.
This though! You're totally right. Last time the preppy style was a big thing was 2007-2008 when the market crashed and Gossip Girl was the big media. Fashion is nothing more than a cycle- with the internet and the increasing instability of the economy, the trend cycle has sped up. Generally timing depends on how safe the majority of people feel financially- but trend cycles generally follow: 1. Preppy/old money/clean girl (recession/winter), 2. Return to individualism (start of rebuild/spring) this is when you see a slew of quick in and out trends. Escapism. 3. Counterculture, art, experimental fashion (people feel safer and more normal, feel comfortable trying and seeing new things./summer)) 4. Designer mania. (Economy is unsustainable, but we're trying to ignore it//autumn)).
@@-Araina-well I can afford that, but I will rather use it for financial independence, not having to work, investment in stocks and properties, housing etc. Spending it on coats is idiotic. You can literally buy a coat from a second-hand store for like 30€ and it is just as good as a 5000€ coat
This is why it gives me such joy to watch male pro-footballers & WAGs make their silly money and spend it in 'trashy' or 'tacky' ways. There's a naive delight to the way they navigate their wealth. Plus, they've earned it through consistent work since childhood, albeit playing a stupid game. Would be nice to see female footballers get the same, but sadly that isn't the world we live in rn.
agreed! also tbf a lot of footballers are quite conscious of the wealth they have, a lot of them lift their families/communities out of poverty, take an interest in charity causes and get involved in politics (e.g Marcus Rashford). It's snobby to judge their "taste" in mansions and clothes. End of the day, I'd rather see wealth in the hands of world class athletes who understand the real world, than the great great grandkids of colonisers (who got their money through violence and slavery, and kept it all by marrying their cousins).

another thing that alot of people aren’t aware about is that when celebrities have big events (like red carpets, the met gala, weddings etc.) most of the time the celebrities aren’t paying for the garments out of pocket they borrow them from the fashion house and then return them when the event is over. it just pushes the facade even more to make people think that they’re casually dropping 100k+ on a one of a kind couture piece when they’re really not.
One critical point you forgot to note is that with old wealth, "breeding" is more important than money, there have been cases of people from prominent families losing all their wealth and still being highly respected in the old wealth communitiy. Like having that last name will open more doors for you than money will if you get my point. Money isnt everything to those people.
Let's not forget right-wing housewife ideology in which classy women that cover up are "better" and the new money flashy aesthetic is slutty and "asking for it". I don't know, something about that branding doesn't sit right with me.
I don't get how people can't separate the objects (clothes, shoes, hairstyle, decoration) from the really bad values that that period had. Wearing a vintage dress does not require you to be r4cist or anti-feminism. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I see people, specially women, showing how conservative they are and shielding themselves from criticism by saying "I'm just following 40s style of live, if don't like it just don't follow it" like ok girl but you're not in the 40s so do you need to imply you're better or actually correct by being submissive? you know can just do the hairstyle without it, right? is it really necessary to be homophobic as well?
@@annabela.1673yess this is very true. There are channels online that talk about how to appear as a more “classy” or “high value” woman, and it’s literally just repackaged sexism. Talking about how you need to be submissive, discrete, and conservative, not just in image but in your mindset.

It's pretty interesting that people are using Succession as style inspo when the costume designer has explained how the Roys' styling, especially for Shiv and Kendall, is because they're insecure. Shiv dresses like a performance of a she-EO (compare her first season more laid-back, long-haired trustifarian vibes before she joined Waystar to her mostly neutral, tailored suits with a sharp bob from the second season onward) because she's a fraud who has no business experience and keeps trying to throw her weight around people who know she's full of it. Also, even putting aside the ick of aspiring to "old money" looks, it's still a very narrow, New York/Connecticut aesthetic. In the US, "old money" people from the South have their own different clothing aesthetics (think seersucker suits, brighter colored sundresses and pearls) than someone from the Northeast or Midwest.

I feel like it's high time we called out the rich people cult that we are entering as society. Let's be honest most of the rich people have blood on their money, but Tiktok will just praise them for their aesthetic and many will aspire to be like them, because they present themselves in a casual way or live the quiet life so as to not get exposed and hated by people of lower classes. The last thing rich people want is angry peasants so to say, which is why they are trying to be pleasing or just go under the radar for the safety of their wealth and propably very toxic mindset. The immense vitriol Meghan Markle experienced comes to mind, and even the discounting of Lionel Richie lines up to me. Even thinking of the way bling culture has been labeled as tacky and how the Kardashians appropriated Black culture only to turn away when they wanted the "respectability" of old wealth.

i know what video you mean and i watched it myself. i was convinced as you that they were indeed racist but if harry himself and meghan said that the royal family were not racist . i def. belive them than a youtuber. 🤷♀️ Also the reason why meghan is disliked by the people is her behaviour. and not because of her skin colour. in the beginning she was even one if the most liked member. and no i'm not a royalist. i just can't stand posh milionaires acting like victims
I am not a huge Meghan defender, and I didn't even specifically mention the royal family in my comment. I am a Black woman, and hearing her being ridiculed by the public and hearing comments about her not knowing her place and people calling her low class are things I have heard my entire life. Like the nitpicking of her outfits and her behavior to that extent are definitely racially coded.
Exactly! Like the old money aesthetic is very minimalistic and subdued with 'whiteness' being the thread that stitches it all together. It feels so full of that whiteness that there's no space for culture without it making the look more 'new money' adjacent or heavens forbid like a pleb.
This old money/quiet luxury discourse also reeks of slut shaming. I've seen some commenters saying how Sophia Richie looks so elegant without showing much skin, on opposition to other influencers.
@@PieniPingviini fr people need to know they can praise modesty without slutshaming but they always do that and make excuses like we aren’t slutshaming we are just praising “modesty” which in their eyes is a skinny lady if it was to be a curvy one they would not call it modesty almost like the clothes aren’t the problem their thinking is . honestly f them
"Quiet luxury": fine. "Old money": great-grandpa owned a slave plantation, stole resources south of the Equator, and/or somehow came through WWII with his bank balance enhanced. Could we skip using the latter term to sell more clothes?
Not everything is about your country honey. Some "great grandpas" worked their ass off to earn that they earned, nothing to do with exploitation or slaves.
@@SoneBlinkI feel like the term “old money” is literally only used by Americans from the USA and it’s weird young people romanticize this now considering this money was gained off of the backs of slaves very obviously so
As a British person can I just applaud you for talking about the ludicrousness of working class people in Britain looking up to the Royal family, it’s beyond cringe worthy.
can i just say, as an american raised in the early aughts by fairly conservative parents, that I love that you used the clip of dubya getting a shoe thrown at him and I hope this video continues to raise awareness that an iraqi reporter threw TWO SHOES at that man.
I love that succession even touched on new money versus old money with the pierce family. It shows how ridiculous they are and they seemed more out of touch with reality than the Roy family which is an accomplishment in of itself
I live in a very "old money" town and when I was a little bit younger I used to think "those people have so much money and they never leave this place, they marry the people they knew from kindergarten and never meet new people" but now I totally understand why, it's kinda crazy to me the concept, but it's all for the money and titles.
Actually the “logo craze” was born out of hip hop culture I believe. Dapper Dan and others would (illegally) create custom logo pieces for celebrities and locals. This pissed the brands off so much they had him raided and stole the designs he’s created with the logos he stole. I think logos were previously only printed in succession interiorly.
Very well said! I am American-British. I totally agree with you about the royal family! I also grew up in an old money family. My dad was new money (he was actually looked down on by my mom’s family until he made more money than them, and then they all loved them, hypocrites!), and my mom from old money. My mother was insanely abusive and my father was incredibly kind. I went to boarding school, and was always the black sheep. I got along with my dad. My brother and sister embraced the snobbery of old money. I wasn’t new money or old money. Frankly, I didn’t really care about wealth at all, other than it putting a roof over my head and food in my stomach. I just wanted to be a good person, someone who is as knowledgeable and kind as possible. And let me tell you, coming from old money is not glamorous. Not if you’re like me, anyway. Not if you have a mother like mine. It a miserable, miserable existence. If you’re a bad person who embraces the mean girl snobbery of it all, then yeah, sure, you’ll fit in and enjoy it. But if you’re a good person, if you like to read and study more than play tennis and gossip all day; if you like to actually do everything in your power to donate, volunteer, and help others, instead of just patronisingly talk about how the common people need help; if you refuse to conform to their superficial standard, if you like to show any sort of individuality - well, then you will find living amongst old money a very, very miserable existence, indeed. And that’s not even getting into all the abuse that I previously mentioned that is just…rife. My mom’s best friends would come up to me as a child and say that they saw that she was a horrible mother and abusing me - but that she was super fun to party with! They just wanted to let me know that they saw what she was doing to me. As if that made everything better. As if telling me that absolved them of responsibility. My mother actually dated a member of the Bush family and then tried to pawn him off onto me when she was done with him. She used to hit on all of my own boyfriends, every single one that I brought home. She even did it with my fiancé. And when I was a child, she brought pedophiles around me. She once invited a convicted pedophile to stay with us, someone who had been convicted of assaulting and kidnapping a girl the exact same age as me. When I told her he made me uncomfortable, she told me that I was too thin for him to be interested in me (her constant obsession with me being thin had given me an eating disorder), she told me that age was just a number, and him kidnapping the girl was part of a beautiful love story. Mind you this guy was in his eighties, and the girl was like 13. She told me to get along with him. He used to give me cigarettes, and she encouraged it. She and my dad divorced when I was 12, after a raucous marriage, in which she constantly cheated on him, and all of us kids were constantly walking in on her sleeping with the men she had my dad hire to build her houses or fix things or whatever. And those men were often very abusive towards me as well. The whole thing was such a cliche. And of course, everyone in the community talked, so I had to hear from the other old money kids about how their parents were talking about how they didn’t know what my mom was thinking acting the way she did. Because everyone gossiped behind everyone else’s back. Everyone was two-faced. I would see this all the time at the country club - Woman A and Woman B are talking badly about Woman C. Woman C comes up and they all act like best friends. Then woman A leaves and woman B and C start talking badly about A. It was ridiculous. So fake. So yeah, even though tv shows glamorise the drama, it’s not glamorous. It’s just awful. And anyway, we shouldn’t live in a society with so much wealth disparity. No one needs Bezos amounts of money, and no one should be as poor as the poorest people are - especially in this day and age. If we stop having so many children, and we start implementing sustainable policies, we could have enough resources to live in a world where everyone could live comfortably, happily, with their basic needs taken care of, in a beautiful world. If the wealthiest among us gave up just a few of their most expensive luxuries, and we began taxing personal and corporate hoarded wealth that is doing nothing except sitting in banks stagnating (hurting the economy), we could give the 99% good homes, good food, a beautiful environment to live around that protects the animals and other species in it, clean water, decent medical care, and vital human rights. There are some good people from old money. Like I said, I come from an old money family. This comment isn’t meant to be a witch-hunt. You can’t demonise everyone from a certain group. It’s just meant to open the eyes of anyone who reads it (even though I doubt anyone will)…to break apart the mindless fantasy and romanticisation of old money that has existed for thousands of years, and continues to exist to this day.
I read it all, and I am very grateful I did. I am truly sorry you went through what you went through, no one on earth should ever have to carry that burden. I'm not one to comment on other people's parents, it's just how I was raised--but I will say your mother will definitely get what's coming to her. I'm the opposite of you, sorta, in which I grew up lower middle class, supported by some upper middle class family members, that without them we would've literally been in poverty. I also grew up in one of the richest counties in the US, so being surrounded by so much wealth whilst being dirt poor yourself was extremely traumatic growing up. I'm still not in a good place financially, but I have a roof over my head, food, and access to the internet, so I'm grateful for that. I'd be lying if I said I didn't fantasize about being old money, or old money adjacent. There are literally 25 country clubs within 20 minutes of where I live, one on almost every other block, it's insane. Anyway, I digress, all that to say I feel for you, and I see you, if that counts for anything. I hope life is much more peaceful for you now x
This was a very interesting watch. I don't usually think much about the whole Old Money vs New Money thing because, like most people, I'm living the ✨No Money✨ lifestyle.
I can't keep up ppl. Just let me live my minimum wage life in peace. Just kidding, there's no such thing as "minimum wage" in my country. They just underpay you, regardless of your degree.🙆🏻♀️
Haven’t finished the video yet, but an interesting detail about “new” vs “old” money is that old money hides because it fears revolution. The rise of the old money aesthetic probably has something to do with the increasing threat of class revolution (ie: a lot of people are talking about wealth redistribution and socialism, etc). I’ve heard people theorize that the wealthy see how crazy the wealth gap has gotten since the pandemic and how the tides have turned regarding the public opinion of the wealthy. ContraPoints has an interesting segment in her “Opulence” video (CHECK IT OUT) where she talks about how the biggest houses owned by the wealthiest people are behind HUGE hedges at the end of LONG driveways. Not sure if you mention this, but something that came to mind when I watched your video.
I think some of it comes off the dark academia trend tbh. With books like the secret history going viral (I know it’s been years but still); emulating that aesthetic is literally emulating wealth despite the warning in the book. It’s often linked to Ivy Leagues and Oxbridge which all signal being elite academically but are strongly correlated with wealth
19:25 I used to live in a ski resort town where a lot of very wealthy people went on vacation (yes it was as awful as that sounds). We used to joke about how everyone was wearing brand new Canada Goose jackets they clearly bought that day. It finally makes sense to me. They literally did not own a jacket lol.
What's funny is that back in the day, the Vanderbilts were the "new money" and the old money that came from nobility thought that the Vanderbilts were too gaudy and didn't want to be seen with them
34:25 Celebs may also dress down at coachella bc this is just another cool day trip to them and they know they’ll have other opportunities to actually dress up. Whereas with influencers or casual goers probably won’t have other opportunities again in the year to really go all out and dress up
One of the many reasons people end up romanticizing old money & quiet luxury while demeaning new money is because of how attainable they seem. Old money, for most of us, is a fantasy, something we cannot achieve in one lifetime. The only way to be old money is to have generational wealth, and most of us are not born into it, so we end up feeling very neutral about it. While new money appears to be more attainable. Taking the example of influencers, it seems way more plausible for an average Joe to become an influencer than to build a business empire (primarily by exploiting workers). We often see new money as our failure and as a reason for envy and view quiet luxury with rose-coloured glasses.
I just don't understand how anyone could romanticize old money families or looks when old money literally means BLOOD MONEY. that extreme wealth comes from severe violence and exploitation, and continued exclusion!
I’d argue that part of succession is about how while the Roy family wants to appear old money, they are still very clearly new money to other very wealthy people in the show, aka the Pierce family as we see in season 3
the whole thing is so funny to me. like y'all really think looking confused at rich people socialising areas wearing a zara blazer gonna make a rich man leave the decades old tradition of marrying their own class?? please
I live in a very very small city and even here we have a small group of rich kids who only hang out, date, and tag each other. If you follow one of them, you are sure to see the rest in their stories or IG posts. And their circle is simply impenetrable. No matter how much you level up, they’re just not gonna be interested in befriending or dating those outside their rich circle.
in my opinion this “quiet luxury” maybe will have a good impact because focusing on good materials and timeless is definitely a good thing (sustainability, less consumption etc), it’s a shame that it’s so classist tho
Excellent point about the royal family. The Kardashians, despite their many problems, make their money from consumers who have choice, while the royal family makes their money from mandatory citizen taxes.
Not only are people calling quiet luxury things that are so not quiet, it's weird that amongst so many discussions of wealth gap, injustice, nepo babies, systemic social problems, people are fawning over inherited money.
12:15 : About wealth mixing My grandad technically comes from old money and my grandma grew up incredibly poor. They went to the same university (my grandad didn’t go a fancy university) and they fell in love. Some of the differences between the rich and poor included minute details like how you drink your whiskey (my gran loves telling me about how she thought she was being given a shot of whiskey when it was supposed to last ‘around midnight’- an hour). They did not treat her well due to her lack of knowledge about the upper class. And when I met one of my grandads cousins (very high up in the Twinings company) he laughed at me because I didn’t know the difference between 2 cups of tea 😭😂. I got gifted a pair of diamonds earrings from a friend and wore them to meet some old money family. They ripped me to shreds and I felt so awful after. Also, they were all addicted to substances and it was rough. This was all in 2018-2019 and I haven’t contacted them since
I think something else that's added to the intrest in wealth is the bigger obsession with mean girls. Like being obsessed with both Regina and Regina like characters who are often very wealthy and wanting to be them

more than 15 years ago i studied at a place that old money people attended (Sciences Po), although they were not the mayority in several faculties, i don't know how it is nowadays. tbh that version of old money aesthetic looked similar to clothes i used to wear when i was a child in a family barely scraping by: lots of whites bcs it's easier to dump it in chlorine and make it look "new", browns and blacks to mask spots, clothes made of pure cotton and alpaca wool which i had because Peruvian. It made me realise taste is truly (re)constructed. glad i left lol

I think actual old money families do care about how many generations the family has had wealth. It’s about familiar status/coming from a ‘dynasty’. In uk they often are or involved with the aristocracy etc. that definitely matters to them. They also have traditions in Europe/uk where 1 person will be the heir to the majority of the fortune as to not dilute the power. But yeah the internet/TikTok is just obsessed with the stylistically lol
Ppl b like: why are the Kardashians rich and famous they have no talent! When the British monarchy is right there. Thank you I’ve been saying this for years and old ppl don’t seem to get it.
I think the recent pandemic also caused a huge shift in how we view wealth. No one wants to see rich people flaunting their money while thousands of people lost their jobs, were stuck at home, and having to suffer through an unpredictable virus. Maximalism also became a huge trend during this time while people were again stuck at home and many needed creative outlets. I think quiet luxury and stealth wealth has a lot to do with “hiding” your money and again furthering yourself from the masses. If maximalism and logo mania is cool for the average person then it’s no longer cool for the wealthy. I’m just tired of rich people in general lol
The Gilded Age on MAX (ew) is such a fun and ~fairly~ historically accurate depiction of what the new/old money divide was like in the late 1800s New York City social scene. we’re talking railroad tycoons, robber-barons, oil dudes, gold mines, etc… crazy how literally nothing changes in 150 years
this is not super related but just reminds me of it, I used to model as a teenager (thank god I got out lol) and once did a photoshoot where I was wearing a specially made designer coat worth TEN THOUSAND euros (no labels of course, those who know know)! Absolutely insane, especially considering that the coat had been specially made and was not made super well so bits and pieces kept falling off and the stylist had to clip and sew things back on as we went so it wouldn't show on the pictures. "quality over quantity" isn't necessarily true, they only wear their clothes once or twice anyway so it doesn't need to last that long. A lot of work went into it I think but it was not made to last.
Okay all this aside. I just wanted to tell you that your videos literally bring me so much joy. It's like having a cup of coffee/tea with a friend or in this case friends (people in the comments). the people on tik tok who are obsessed with this 'aesthetic' seem to be the lana del rey coquette girlies. their aesthetic is rooted in racism and classism, and they don't get it.
You would also be complaining if they didn't dress like what you think of as "white." You'd accuse them of ripping off POC and appropriating their culture (see the vitriol against the Kardashians). It seems like white girls are damned if they do, damned if they don't. They get hatred spewed at them either way.
@@yanavav it’s the romanticization of 1950’s America which historically had segregation and was awful for black people at the time, the aesthetic tends to gloss over the racism and sexism of that time period, and how it was normal for husbands to beat their wives/children. whoever is obsessed with the old money aesthetic has never worked a retail job in an ivy league college town. Let me tell you, as someone who works in Princeton, you begin to hate rich people REAL fast lmao
Ok SO! I work at a church on the fancy side of town in the U.K. lots of very rich people, old money. And honestly, they just wear old clothes. 😅 even “quiet luxury” and Succession style of things screams too much.
I live in an area with some of the wealthiest people in the world. I am not friends with but know in passing (nod hello at the grocery store) one of the wealthiest women in the world. She drives a Volkswagen Golf and wears "regular" clothes (not designer). She runs to Walmart to pick up things she needs. Many of the wealthiest people are wealthy because they do not spend their money on ridiculously expensive clothing or accessories. Most the truly wealthy and old money people I personally know would be given a side eye by these Cosplaying internet types for being "poor" or "unfashionable". When in reality, that lady in the produce aisle in regular Levi's with a bit of dirt on them from when she was tending her horses can buy and sell them at the blink of an eye. And yes, they often have "help" but they also do a significant amount of their own work, too. They do have nice things and sometimes expensive things but it's because it's for them not because they are trying to get attention or impress anyone. Quiet means quiet. This whole fad reminds me of when little kids "whisper" so loud you can hear them clear across the room. It's amusing and will pass when the next attention grabbing fad comes along.
As a cleaning contractor I have seen both old and new money. Both are as bad as each other. New thinks they can do your job and expects the work for cheaper. Old have Old things that need to be binned, so when they break its because you did something wrong. I have seen me cleaning a bathroom that was completely rusted for them to be happy with it. My moto is just get the job done and let them all be. If they are happy and give me no problems I couldn't care less. Xc
I love watching these videos because my tiktok NEVER reflects any of these so-called “trends” and this is my only way of finding out wth ppl are talking about.
The Great Gatsby gives a great example of old money vs new money and Jordan's breakdown is bang on. I offer another perspective: I think if you look at the slowing popularity of the Kardashian/Jenners which is glamourizing Baby Motherhood with rappers and ballers - most of which relationships are over through divorce or scandal. Sophia Ritchie was lining herself up with that family hence her dating Scott Disick. I think it was wise of her to reverse out of that lane and find someone less popular that she actually knows (apparently they've grew up together) and won't have to worry about a man leeching off of her money/inheritence/image was a smart move. I just hope she doesn't make it her entire identity as she is still super young.
I would love to hear what someone from an old money affluent family has to say about all this bs. do they even care about commoners trying (and failing) to emulate their lifestyle on tiktok?
I'm not from an old money family but my parents are best friends wiyh people who are. To be honest they coulf care less about what people look like or wear. Its about manners, how a person treats others, with respect, humility and good manners. Anything else is seen as vulgar. The one main divide they are meticulous about is education. Someone with a great educational background (graduates of prep schools, ivy league unis or generally well known unis or overseas studying such as studying in Europe, canada or Australia)
Work around these atmosphere, us peasants are fleeting thoughts in their mind. Maybe a point of humor for a few seconds and then the topic changes. BTW everyone these wealthy people wear whatever they want like whatever. Someone’s dressed like a peocock, someone like they are homeless and someone dressed like they’re going to church. This entire video, specifically the Coachella bit, reminded me of one of my English courses in college were our focus was older (like 20-40s) Hollywood. Our professor spent like half a lecture discussing how people with ‘old money’ tried to rally against people who weren’t old money ‘suddenly’ becoming rich because they said the new money people ‘wouldn’t know how to act right since they don’t know what it’s like to have that kind of money.’
What is insane to me is how anyone could look at Sophia Richie's wedding and not think it looks incredibly expensive. Like...nothing about it says "quiet" to me
Right? I still don't understand what is quiet about whole ass wedding at the most expensive hotel in South France
She literally wore 3 chanel dresses
and literally got it covered by one of the most well-known journals... like broadcasting on vogue is intentional and loud
I'd be really curious what your experience at university is like!
very true
It's a decidedly white aesthetic.

I disagree. With the husband part. She is finally known for being herself. Rebranding herself was amazing
Oh damn
@@yukikanegawa7470 'Hard to feel bad about them when they're still rich' fair point, that's one way to value and measure a life's worth. It certainly makes life easier and safer, to have a lot in the bank/in investments.

@@IshtarNike hi, would you mind sharing the author nd title of the book:)

(Also omg luxury is never quiet, capitalism speaks volumes)
Mmmm not really, they are all ghetto.
You gatekeep rich good taste and culture, that you set the canon for
Classist and racist FOR SURE. It grosses me out.
in Europe old money would also be build off the back of slaves, when anyone gets rich there is always someone getting exploited. like she said Bezos wouldn't be rich if he didn't treat his workers so poorly. Also like Casey said there is a strong racial component to the whole old money vs new money discussion; Im thinking about how rappers in the 80s were framed by the media as less classy/thug-ish etc bc the old money folks wanted to segregate themselves from the nouveau rich

Aspiring to be old money is so weird to me. New money people are considered tacky, but at least it could be argued that they directly worked for what they have, rather than sitting on their arse and living off trust funds.
Neither old nor new money "directly worked" for what they have. You can't get to that level of wealth without exploiting someone else's work.
If I were to start making caveats about new money people not being that great either, it would distract from my point.
@@emmamusic4600 No, I’m in the US
@@lizabee484 Sorry that happened to you, how horrible.
@@nofancypants It was a long time ago, honestly it’s just wild to think back on it XD
That’s so interesting the cultural differences between the US and UK when it comes to that tho!
I find it funny how on one side nepo babies are being criticized but on the other side the old money aesthetic is celebrated.
that’s so insane
no you’re so right they are literally the same thing. the difference is that nepo babies are famous. they’re on magazine covers, talk-shows, movies, music videos etc. they are a constant reminder of the industry connections us normal people don’t have, making it much easier for us to hate them. by contrast, million-dollar business nepotism happens completely out of our view so it’s easy to forget that it’s actually the same concept.
An aesthetic has nothing to do with nepotism...so i don't see the contradiction.
How is nepotism related to old money? In fact, old money obviously have connections but they have the education and qualifications to get the jobs. Nepotism babies did NOTHING to have that privilege and they "stole" that spot from others that are much more skilled and educated.

@@cheyenne7982this is deeply hilarious to me as a Duluth employee
the obsession with old money and "whispering wealth" is hilarious. i've brushed elbows with these people and let me tell you, money does NOT equal class. old money is such a different way of thinking. it's like coming back to school from winter break and they're talking about which $$$ ski resort they went to, if they were going international for a weekend, which house they were going to go to for the summer, etc. they lack a lot of basic life skills and common sense. i truly do not understand the obsession. you can always tell when people try to "fit in"
I think it all comes down to the lack of community people are experiencing
the fact that most of those succession clothing pieces were so boring or even straight up ugly and still cost hundreds of dollars is absurd to me
They were meant to be like that. Before the craze of season four there was a video and also an article that explained how the show deglamourized luxory making it almost bland and soulless.

The family was big old money and my dad knew a couple of people who were family friends with them and they did confirm how all sons were basically incompetent with the sole exception being the dude that was meant to succeed his father in the main family business. "ressecioncore" Jesus..
Also, people tend to dress down during a recession. Less flashy wealth means better chances of surviving the guillotine😅
Generally timing depends on how safe the majority of people feel financially- but trend cycles generally follow:
1. Preppy/old money/clean girl (recession/winter),
2. Return to individualism (start of rebuild/spring) this is when you see a slew of quick in and out trends. Escapism.
3. Counterculture, art, experimental fashion (people feel safer and more normal, feel comfortable trying and seeing new things./summer))

This old money/quiet luxury discourse also reeks of slut shaming. I've seen some commenters saying how Sophia Richie looks so elegant without showing much skin, on opposition to other influencers.
So what’s wrong with that? We are all tired of Fashion Nova sluts
Sluts should be ashamed.
fr it’s the conservatives who love her. it’s always the white skinny blond haired christian girl in these old money videos
Yup the modesty police instantly jumped out
@@PieniPingviini fr people need to know they can praise modesty without slutshaming but they always do that and make excuses like we aren’t slutshaming we are just praising “modesty” which in their eyes is a skinny lady if it was to be a curvy one they would not call it modesty almost like the clothes aren’t the problem their thinking is . honestly f them
"Quiet luxury": fine.
"Old money": great-grandpa owned a slave plantation, stole resources south of the Equator, and/or somehow came through WWII with his bank balance enhanced.
Could we skip using the latter term to sell more clothes?
This is what I automatically think about when I hear old money, like their wealth is rooted in slavery and racism. Just gross
Not everything is about your country honey. Some "great grandpas" worked their ass off to earn that they earned, nothing to do with exploitation or slaves.
Speaking of WW2, German old money families usually have a few skeletons in their closet (Almost quite literally) from 1933-1945!
Oh just stop NOW! Everyone spews the same buzzwords nowadays
Hero!
"dubya" lmao that is exactly how me and my midwestern family say it every time 😂
Best comment. Thank you
I love that succession even touched on new money versus old money with the pierce family. It shows how ridiculous they are and they seemed more out of touch with reality than the Roy family which is an accomplishment in of itself
I simply can't be concerned about old money vs new money when I don't have any money
I live in a very "old money" town and when I was a little bit younger I used to think "those people have so much money and they never leave this place, they marry the people they knew from kindergarten and never meet new people" but now I totally understand why, it's kinda crazy to me the concept, but it's all for the money and titles.
Ya even the clothing is very reserved, it isn't popular or mainstream to most people in the middle class, like gucci
Yes! and Gucci i think “stole” his designs for like a time capsule line and didn’t reach out to anyone associated with him to collab
I like that you mentioned exploitation of workers because that is something that is usually overseen when talking about wealth.
I would see this all the time at the country club -
Woman A and Woman B are talking badly about Woman C.
When Jordan uploads everything stops. 😌
She stole this entire video ppl us thumbnail from @amandamaryanna
@@alikay1308 Can two youtubers not talk about the same topic in a video??
This was a very interesting watch. I don't usually think much about the whole Old Money vs New Money thing because, like most people, I'm living the ✨No Money✨ lifestyle.
I can't keep up ppl. Just let me live my minimum wage life in peace.
Just kidding, there's no such thing as "minimum wage" in my country. They just underpay you, regardless of your degree.🙆🏻♀️
what country are you from?
Sounds like Italy to me 😂
Definitely India 😭
I just know these Old Money families are the most dysfunctional, unstable, and unbearable. They reek of all sorts of -isms, it’s insane.😭
Whereas with influencers or casual goers probably won’t have other opportunities again in the year to really go all out and dress up
never thought "actually yeah, at least the kardashians aren't colonizers" would be on my bingo card today 🤣
“are ‘celebrities vs influencers’ the new ‘old money vs new money’?” is the best relevant essay question i’ve heard in centuries
I just don't understand how anyone could romanticize old money families or looks when old money literally means BLOOD MONEY. that extreme wealth comes from severe violence and exploitation, and continued exclusion!
What the fuck are u talking about not every generational wealth is blood 💀💀
I feel like you’re so much more confident & energetic in a positive way and it makes me so happy to see it
in my opinion this “quiet luxury” maybe will have a good impact because focusing on good materials and timeless is definitely a good thing (sustainability, less consumption etc), it’s a shame that it’s so classist tho
Honestly, though, the people jumping on the old money trend right now are probably going to swap out those "timeless" pieces a few years out.
People focus on the look and buy trash from Zara and elsewhere
Excellent point about the royal family. The Kardashians, despite their many problems, make their money from consumers who have choice, while the royal family makes their money from mandatory citizen taxes.
old money is just a $750 plain white t-shirt that looks like it came from target, we don’t know but they do 💁🏼♀️
Not only are people calling quiet luxury things that are so not quiet, it's weird that amongst so many discussions of wealth gap, injustice, nepo babies, systemic social problems, people are fawning over inherited money.
12:15 : About wealth mixing
My grandad technically comes from old money and my grandma grew up incredibly poor.
Like being obsessed with both Regina and Regina like characters who are often very wealthy and wanting to be them
Who's Regina
@@tj-co9go she's a main character in mean girls
@@kiishaokezie7332 oh, I saw the movie a long time ago but don't remember much about it. i thought ir was some new influencer I hadn't heard of. i am not up to date to the newest popular culture
This is probably my favourite video by Jordan so farrrr. Her energy levels are off the charts. Love you Jordan
more than 15 years ago i studied at a place that old money people attended (Sciences Po), although they were not the mayority in several faculties, i don't know how it is nowadays. tbh that version of old money aesthetic looked similar to clothes i used to wear when i was a child in a family barely scraping by: lots of whites bcs it's easier to dump it in chlorine and make it look "new", browns and blacks to mask spots, clothes made of pure cotton and alpaca wool which i had because Peruvian. It made me realise taste is truly (re)constructed. glad i left lol
Convinced that the only reason Charles felt comfortable having such an expensive coronation in such a bad climate because he knows full well that he's not gonna live long enough to be beheaded
But if Willy is smart....he should think carefully about being as ostentatious :)
I used to work at a Loro Piana store in NYC. These people would come in and you could never tell if they were super wealthy on the street but would come in spend 1,000s of dollars
I get no joy from watching people showing me things that i have no hope of ever experiencing.
I once had a full on meltdown because i scrolled past a beautiful bathroom on twitter when i was already having a rough day.
Like I was inconsolable
I think actual old money families do care about how many generations the family has had wealth. It’s about familiar status/coming from a ‘dynasty’. In uk they often are or involved with the aristocracy etc. that definitely matters to them. They also have traditions in Europe/uk where 1 person will be the heir to the majority of the fortune as to not dilute the power.
But yeah the internet/TikTok is just obsessed with the stylistically lol
I'd love nothing more than just hearing your thoughts on succession!! I'm obsessed with it and you're my favorite youtuber!!
I can't explain how much I love this community❤
I have been watching your videos for 2 (or maybe 3 years, I don't remember) and I love how thought-out your videos are, like you take your time researching, reading and writing. And I just wanted to say, thank you!!! ❤
the people on tik tok who are obsessed with this 'aesthetic' seem to be the lana del rey coquette girlies. their aesthetic is rooted in racism and classism, and they don't get it.
as someone whose brown and also a fan of lanas music 100% this. there is so much racism in that community.
Interesting comment that strikes a chord. Expand?
Can u point out how ldr aesthetic is rooted in racism and classism, I know her paradise had sum issues but I think she's moved on from that long ago.
Lana tends to write songs about 1950’s american staples and celebrity culture
I've been obsessed with Succession's writing for a week now, are you kidding me, what a timing!
whoever is obsessed with the old money aesthetic has never worked a retail job in an ivy league college town.
Old money vs new money = aristocracy vs bourgeoisie
GASP rich people don’t all wear the same say beige & white clothes
@@luluwahbarakat6612if your parents are bsfs with them then does that make you somewhat…of their class? so you are also sort of old money?
anyway, do you think most of them are nice or are they very judgmental?😅
I think it's fair to say Sofia Richie just grew up and matured.. the whole labelling it as a rebrand is just ridiculous imo 😂
Old money isn't quiet in my opinion, Old mansions haven't become available to the common person in the years/ centuries since they were built
