TikTok influencers are fueling overconsumption, consumerism and shopping addiction with a myriad of influencers pushing product hauls on the platform. In this video, I discuss how TikTok Shop not only harms people financially, but also the environment and our mental health. I also discuss the deinfluencing trend.

I'm talking beautiful name brand dresses, skirts and sweaters. When I bought my kids winter clothes the amount of tags on children's clothing from target brands was shocking.
People are just buying to buy with no intention of ever wearing it. Its just about the shopping experience. It's nutters.

Firefox occasionally stops but all you have to do is clean caches and it works again. It's right now the only option there is to block ads on RUclips, at least for me. Other browsers like Opera could work as well. I say this because ads on RUclips are simply ridiculous and I won't be shoved ads down my throat if I can stop it.

@@ariannaspaudo There are more things that make it a whole world problem. Some time ago there was a docu in German where they put tracking devices in shoes to see where they are going after they put them into collection boxes, returned them etc.
At multiple positions in that network there were companies sorting them in can be sold to more picky people, can be sold to poorer countries and has to go to a landfill. E.g. shoes went to a second hand shop in Eastern Europe and to a market in an African country.

@@jochenkraus7016 Not to mention where all this textile waste goes. The first world is a consumer society, and most of the junk they buy and then carelessly throw away later doesn't end up in domestic landfills. Oh no, not in my backyard! No, instead it's dumped in third world countries, polluting and scarring people's homes and the environment. Us in the first world turn a blind eye to all the human and environmental detriment we cause in other parts of the world. Wouldn't want to spoil our pristine and luxurious lives with the sight of trash, now would we? It's not only in third world countries either; low income citizens in the US are especially vulnerable to environmental injustice and receive the brunt of chemical pollutants and waste. In essence, third world countries and poor towns are dumping grounds for first world countries. That's changing, but slowly...and reluctantly. Unfortunately we don't practice what we preach - it's all performative activism to make ourselves feel better without lifting a single finger to make real change. If you can find it, there's a good documentary online called "Manufacture Landscapes" that goes into depth about this whole subject. It's good stuff, really opens your eyes to what we sacrifice for our western life.

Alot of people especially in America feel trapped by the double bind of "hustle culture", but also "take time for yourself". People think, "how can i take time for myself when i'm struggling to pay for rent/get my basic needs met?" So they hustle with jobs that are dropship or promote a product because the passive income buys them the time they need to actually work on thier mental health, OR they buy a quick cheap badly made thing because they work an all consuming job to pay bills that helps them put a bandaid on feeling better in the moment. It's a whole system that feeds into itself and i feel a lot of compassion for myself and others about why they do it, after that it comes down to us individually to still try and shift our buying habits, find small windows of self care and most of all shop, act, and support intentionally the places and companies that are trying to dig earth out of the landfill we are burying ourselves in.

what people fail to realize is, getting the latest product you see advertised on popular social media sites such as TikTok won’t make you any more popular than you are it won’t boost your status amongst your peers, won’t get you that boyfriend you seem to want so badly literally nobody cares in the end whether or not you’re buying a $1000 product you could’ve bought the same thing for 20 bucks at walmart

  • @timberjax

Not sure if it’s the way I was raised, my millennial status, or just habit but I wear clothes until they legit fall apart. And when they do fall apart they just become my work/garden clothes. Then rags for the shop. Then if possible compost (natural fibers only). I take other stuff to thrift or swaps. The idea of buying stuff for less than the cost of shipping it, wearing it just a few times, and throwing it in the garbage is beyond my comprehension. And the waste it generates is unthinkable. Thanks for going into the resource extraction to the garbage pile pipelines too: it’s not enough just to think about the afterlife of a product. Love your channel.

I work in a health store and I first saw TikTok's impact on sales in 2021. The first product that did it was liquid chlorophyll. Here is how it went:
    (Phone rings)
ME: Good morning, how may I help you
CALLER: (speaking quickly) DO YOU HAVE LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL?!
    ME:.....Yes, we---
CALLER: OKAY I'M COMING TO GET IT! (hangs up)
    ME: (confused)
    (Phone rings again)
ME: Hello, how may I help you?
CALLER 2: DO YOU HAVE LIQUID CHLORPHYLL?!
ME: Yes. How strange, somebody just called for ---
CALLER 2: I NEED TWO BOTTLES
And the phone rang about 12 times that day. I was so confused because we had literally been selling liquid chlorophyll for 8 years by then. And whenever we were out, I would suggest chlorella or barley grass even moringa. But they would say, "No, I want chlorophyll" not understanding that all of these products had chlorophyll. So it wasn't even the obsession to buy but also the lack of true research about what they were buying. After the liquid chlorophyll, it was NAC. After that, it was graviola (also known as soursop). Now it is shilajit. Actually the shilajit one shocked me the most. I first heard of it about six years ago in a Facebook group about ORMUS (monotonic gold). But since TikTok, a lot of people are getting it without researching. A lot of them are shocked to learn that women can take it. They are shocked to learn about the scammers selling it. They only get the basic info and buy rapidly. I worry for them sometimes because I am afraid they will buy the wrong supplement for their particular body and have an adverse reaction. That is why TikTok is a blessing and a curse. If you are going to consume be a WISE and WELL-RESEARCHED consumer for your physical and financial safety.

I feel like Tiktok promotes major fast consumerism. Not just fast fashion but also regarding books. So many sh*t books are being published because they see what's popular on tiktok and as long as it fits the tiktok criteria the quality of the writing doesn't matter. Personally, I just started a Tiktok at 27 years old, and I only use it to see people talk about classic books. So the books aren't even new, lol.

Absolutely. I am only 19 years old and I have known since I am 15 that social media has been hell for me, but im from Latinoamérica so it doesn't affect me as much as Americans because here, the trends comes by way latter and because I am from a little town, I dont even know whats on trend, actually I didn't even knew the existence of vape until I came to the city last year for college (but It never came to my attention to consume it). But one of the major problems for me has been booktok because I started reading and then ads of books pop up in my fyp and I started buying books, and I look back now and its crazy to me how I was so eager to buy a certain book just because TikTok was recommending it. It didn't go on so long, I dont have a enormous shelf of books because still, I am no rich, but I did buy a lot of horrible books (an expensive ones) just because it was trending, and I completely regret it. I have came to realize the books that actually came to my intention when im not on TikTok, are books about history, astronomy, classics, psychology, and of course I still like fiction but I became so tired of the same plot and when I started college, I just didn't have time nor the money to keep buying books, I haven't buy any book since then, and I intend to find what I really like in books the fashion old way, and to keep actually, give something useful to my mind.

Enjoy your youth and stay away from that shit. Use your cellphone and computer only for studying and work. I don’t get a single friend nowadays to have a single cup of coffee or going to the movies. I think it’s also especially problematic with people with neurodivergence or dopamine issues that are even more susceptible not only to impulse buying but also to object impermanence. As someone with ADHD I really struggle with just buying things in a moment. I actually find it easier to be more mindful online than in a physical store. My system is to put things in the basket or on wish lists and think about and come back later. If the urge is gone or I can’t justify that purchase or use later then there’s no reason to buy it. But that took years for me to get to and I also don’t use apps like TikTok.

It's really crazy how marketing has become the actual entertainment, especially for kids. From the time they were very little, my nieces and nephews favorite type of content has been "unboxing" videos, basically watching someone else get that shopping high. Everything they want these days can be traced back to TikTok, and most of the items aren't even meant for kids in any way. I know that over-consumption currently affects pretty much all generations, but I feel like today's kids and teens are going to be dealing with the worst of it when they grow up. Shopping addiction is so normalized now that I feel people will have a harder and harder time realizing they have a problem.

Soil communities are invaluable and plants rely on them to fix nitrogen and increase their surface area for absorption of all sorts of nutrients, we need to keep the soil alive too and to do that, we need to keep the water in it.

You know I used to use tiktok to avoid ads, but now it makes RUclips feel like a dream in all retrospect.

Love your videos and deep dives!! IMO the shadow work journal is honestly not the worst, I really think the “restock” culture and unnecessary item thing is. Maybe the shadow work journal can shed light and help them realize their overconsumption?😂😭 🤞🏼 (help)
