Cleaning, restocking and organizing content have been dominating social media. As aesthetically pleasing as it is to watch, ‘cleantok’ promotes overconsumption and consumerism under the performative guise of cleaning. Cleantok influencers are hoarding cleaning products and plastic organizing containers to make their homes look super ‘aesthetic’ and cleaning has now become a status symbol for the rich. With the luxury home organizing brands like The Home Edit working with celebrities like The Kardashians, more and more people are participating in cleaning and restocking overconsumption than ever. In this video, I discuss the dangers of this trend.

Mind you, it looked great in my fridge for a few days. Then I had one of my abundant meals that was meant last a couple days for the family...but where to put it?!?! Not one of these influencers/advertisers told me how to store my leftovers😅 Also, it's not easy or realistic to stay on top of constant restocking of those bins and at least one bin that was advertised for fruit is awful at keeping fruit fresh. Restock-tok is born from people who strive for constant abundance and never want to “want” but simply to “have”. I think it stems from people who grow up without a lot of extra money trying to display that they don’t have those worries any more. It’s very psychological, I think.

So I put much of the dry goods I buy into clear containers for a couple reasons beyond asthetics (even though I do like how they look lol). First it's really helpfull in keeping things organized and seeing exactly what I have (and how much) to prevent overbuying. I can simply glance into my pantry and say "I need more flour and lentils, I need more cinammon, I'm still good on almonds, etc." The second reason is that it keeps food fresh for longer since they seal out air and guarantee bugs won't get in. I don't really worry about expiration because they're dry goods and since I do a lot of home cooking I'll likely use it all before it expires anyway. Third, since it's all sealed away cleaning around the containers is super easy and spills virtually never happen.
When I was growing up (and still today) my parent's pantry & spice cabinet was always such a disorganized mess that it was almost impossible to find anything (I.e.: "Where's the brown sugar I JUST bought?!") and we'd constantly be buying things we didn't need simply because we couldn't find what we already had. Because of that, stuff would just continue to pile up long enough for things we could have used to expire and attract bugs. When I eventually got into my own place my airtight containers were one of the first things I bought.

Same, I grew up in a hoarder house and I am currently very dysfunctional. The only way I have managed to take control of my house has been to buy, one area at a time, dedicated storage. I started with the dry pantry and I can report having zero overspending or disorganization issues since! I even eat better because I always know what I have available.
Recently I got myself some spice jars and get the refill bags instead of the expensive glass bottles over and over again. Unfortunately a beetle migrated from when I still had refill bags pegged up in the cabinet into one shiny new bottle and made larvae, but I think that's more to show how unsanitary it was where it used to be. And because I use a spoon, they don't get all steamed up and clotty anymore.
My next goal is the medicine cabinet. I don't know what anything does. Looking forward to sitting down and classifying them according to symptoms!

I have these huge glass 'Mason jar' containers on my counter, which I keep cereal in, for this exact reason (and my partner needs to be able to see things). I save pickle jars for my baking cabinet, because same, I love being able to check stuff quickly. Have you ever heard of Clutterbug? She's a creator on RUclips, and she's definitely helped me with my organizing style

I will admit I redid my spices into glass jars mostly because I liked the look. But it’s so much easier to cook now and to see when I’m running low on something. I also didn’t have a great method of organizing them before. The whole project only cost me $25 and it’s been well worth it. I keep sugar, flour, etc and rice in clear Anchor Hocking containers from Walmart. Super affordable and much easier to use than bags that rip and spill. I have a small kitchen and fridge so decanting everything isn’t space efficient.

Growing up, my mom kept our dry goods in clear containers too for all the same reasons. We ate at home 95% of the time, so our food didn’t sit for too long.

Agreed. I buy spices and dried goods in bulk, but I have VERY little pantry or counter space. Having these things in glass jars that I can see and easily access makes my life easier. The excess can be stored compactly in a bin in a more convenient location in my house. I think that's the distinction with whether these organizing tactics are worth it - do they make your life easier while looking nice or do they only look nice but create more work and chaos in your life.

I hate when tiktokers clean spaces that are already cleaned by someone else (hotel, public bathroom in a restaraunt) because you dont know what the previous person has cleaned it with. So many cleaning chemicals, when mixes, can create extremely toxic gases. Bleach in particular is really good at reacting with other chemicals to create death.

I will argue for the spice jars because my kitchen has SO LITTLE STORAGE that we store the spices in a drawer with the silverware and utensils and those little jars mean now all the spices fit! Same with the little bins since they're stackable. I got some that are freezer safe and have little drawers so I can stack them and everything fits without it all falling out or getting lost. I also write the expiration date on the container and just remove it with a bit of rubbing alcohol.

    • @demo2823
      @demo2823 2 месяца назад +1

I actually got 'jumbo' containers for my spices. I found that the refills are always too much for the glass ones they originally come in, but they only fill my jars halfway so I can easily organize when I need to buy. And it's greener to buy this glass once off instead of repeatedly. Also, now that I can get at it with a spoon, I don't have to worry about them needing ti be tipped over the stove and getting humid.

Yeah, but it should be up to the person who is paying to stay at that hotel to decide if they want a stranger to clean it before hand because you don’t know if the next person who is going to be in there might be allergic to some of the products she is spraying on there or have sensitive lungs, or might be immunocompromised, but then again that involves thinking of other people, and nowadays, nobody thinks of how their actions may affect other people.

@@KristenZianourry2015Yes, but even after your stay hotel staff come in and “clean” after you. I’ve heard some stories about how they don’t wash the comforters after every guest because it would be too much work. There was another commenter on this video who said she was training to clean rooms and the lady she was shadowing used the same rag to clean the toilet and the vanity. There’s nothing wrong with giving your hotel room a wipe down when you get there. By the time you leave whatever you sprayed will be gone for the most part anyway. One tip of advice while cleaning sinks and bathtubs! Never and I MEAN NEVER mix Ajax or Comet cleansing powder with Bar Keepers Friend Cleansing powder! Ajax and Comet contains bleach and Bar Keeper’s Friend contains oxalic acid. These 2 mixed together will create a strong smell and you will be coughing very badly. When I was in the Air Force in basic training we had to clean constantly, so all of us young and stupid late teen/early twenty year olds thought it would be brilliant to just mix all the hoard of cleaning products they gave us together thinking we would get the place super clean quicker. We successfully created a gas that caused us to not be able to go into our barracks for several hours. Needless to say we got in trouble, but I hope the people doing this know they can seriously hurt themselves.

I really wish the word “toxic” would just be put down and left down.
It’s not about using Lysol that’s “toxic”. Using cleaners is perfectly safe and GOOD to do, because it actually sanitizes your surfaces which vinegar and natural cleaners do not do.
It’s MIXING cleaners that is potentially toxic, because those cleaners could interact with eachother in such a way to cause toxic fumes.
