      I feel like the subscription cost isn't any different than using insurance to see a specialist once a week. You just pay it before instead of after. If you're using insurance for a non-Betterhelp therapist too, you pay your monthly bill for the insurance which is charged for the appointments before you receive the leftover after a month of appointments.

      @@tiredschizo I recently lost mine so Betterhelp has been more convient for me. Without my insurance, my former therapist cost $260 per session and I saw them once a week. With BH I pay $300 a month, see my therapist once a week but also get group sessions twice a month. I could never do this without insurance at the old practice I was at, and there aren’t good resources where I live for those without it.

    • @Jane-oz7pp

      A piece of advice about sponsors: they're all scams.
      Anything that relies on sponsorships but has no natural word of mouth advertising happening is a scam.

    • @neonradius
      @neonradius 5 месяцев назад

      @@Jane-oz7ppI disagree with this. Tons of products in stores also end up being scams, we just don’t hear about them because they’re not as popular online. I’ve also bought tons of products (Raycon, Hello Fresh, Magic Spoon) and while they aren’t perfect they’re far from scams. Now there are criticisms of all of these products, but there are criticisms of ALL products. You could say “Raycon is a scam because they only last a few months before the audio sucks”, but they lasted significantly longer than my airpods did. You can say “Hello Fresh has unethical labor practices”, but so do Nike, Nestle, H&M, etc. I’ve heard people call Magic Spoon a scam because a youtuber said he didn’t like it and I can’t believe I have to say this, not liking the taste of a product does not make it a scam, especially when it comes to dieting and healthy products that tend to already taste worse (IMO). Magic Spoon is a good example because it started as a sponsorship product but is now on store shelves, and i’ve had people who are never on youtube recommend it to me. Go into Walmart and I can point out problems with every product, just like we can point out problems with every product youtubers promote.
      And I don’t get you saying “no natural word of mouth”, because no product starts with natural word of mouth advertising. Either you can find a retailer to sell your product, or you have to start with advertising. And sponsorships are just a form of advertising. Every product spends significant amounts of money on advertising, some companies just choose to spend that money on youtube sponsorships instead of traditional ads because a lot of people consider them more effective. I don’t think we should blindly trust sponsorsed products, but saying all of them are inherently scams because sponsorships are inherently scammy is a broad generalization that just doesn’t make sense to me. Especially when you consider that many of the reasons people label certain products “scams” are things that major companies already do, we just ignore them because they’re already established.

    • @neonradius
      @neonradius 5 месяцев назад

      @@Jane-oz7ppI’ve actually found multiple companies that do the same thing as Better Help and have been around longer, they just use different methods to pull in new customers. Some of these websites have even done worse things (Sondermind has had therapists who don’t show up to appointments and still charge patients, or patients who try to stop seeing a therapist because they showed racist or otherwise bad behavior and still got charged for weeks without Sondermind helping, for example). The only difference is these are less publicized so we think this stuff only occurs to youtube sponsor companies. I think it’s a mistake to say this is *only* youtube companies, because then we feel a false sense of security and don’t learn to actually recognize what makes a scam.

      Sometimes people do it between quitting their agency job and starting their own practice. Just to stay financially afloat. @jessica5470 For us here in North America, a counsellor can be considered a therapist as they do offer therapy sessions. Counselling is a form of therapy. Mental health therapy and counselling are interchangeable as per my practice as you speak of teaching, the client as well as the counsellor interchange in that role.
      How would I be able to teach had the client not expressed from the very start what their concerns might be? In fact as a counsellor, it is not necessarily my job to teach, it is my job to listen and reflect back my understanding of their problem and ask questions to the client to reflect ehat I have learned about them to then have them teach themselves how to best navigate their situation in a healthy way!

The therapist I connected with was working from home (which is fine) but her kid was crying and dog was barking constantly in the background in the same room loud as hell and it was obvious she wasn't paying attention to what I was saying at all. She sighed after everything she said and her tone of voice screamed "I don't care". Even the questions she was asking were really surface level and didn't exactly scream 'professional therapist'. She even asked me the same question, not kidding, 3 times. Like, I get it- being a mom is hard and I don't know her home situation, but I wish she would've just rescheduled. The scary part is why isn't there another job that has better standards. To be honest, they also need to putting standards on therapy agencies. If a therapist does advocate for better work conditions they get black listed from many agencies and are considered worse than someone that ocasionally dates clients because that person is willing to make tons of money for the agency for little pay. They never complain and just become part of the system that takes advantage.

    Tried it one time and had an older male as my therapist when I asked for a female. Okay whatever. Told him I was feeling great lately but had unresolved trauma I wanted to bring up and fix. He kept talking about philosophy the entire time instead and I only got 5 words out per session maybe. It was just him talking. When I finally decided to stand up for myself and tell him “hey we haven’t addressed any of the issues this is the 3rd session” he said “well you seem fine to me so I don’t even know why you’re doing therapy in the first place.” Years later, my mom died, and now alllllll of my trauma is in the forefront of my mind constantly and now I’m not “fine”. Really grateful though that I’ve found a really nice in person therapist I connect with now :)

    I had my FIRST therapy session with this one therapist and tried to confide in her about my breakup. Mind you I’m queer, this woman asked me “Tell me why Lesbians always cheat on each other” I was dumbfounded because I didn’t mention cheating at all and that’s not why my ex and I broke up. I told her “I don’t know how to answer that, because I PERSONALLY wouldn’t cheat on a parter” Using stereotypes is not something a “therapist” should use when addressing a client. Plenty of straight couples cheat on each other, cheating is not just a gay thing. Some people need to stay off of mental health platforms especially if their biased, homophobic, or ignorant to different groups of people and especially using blatant stereotypes on clients you literally just met.

    Better help is the absolute worst!
    I am a black gay man who happens to be an Atheist. Moreover, I also deal with extreme anxiety due to CPTSD. When I went to better help for therapy some time ago I listed all of these details in the bio that they have you complete. I was thorough because around that time I was at rock bottom emotionally and psychologically...
    Well better help matches me with an old white man who is a Christian. I am not kidding. He did not mention that in his bio but there I was only picking up key words, but I digress. Anyway, when he introduces himself to me he does so by stating that the past is the past and that he only operates in the now...soooo my cptsd is because of things that happened in the past. So how am i supposed to help myself today if I don't deal with my past.
    Long story short I lasted three sessions with this mfer.he would not listen to me for anything. Most of the sessions were him trying to push the forgiveness narrative down my throat (forgive my homophobic family that threw me to the wolves. Yes that was told to me repeatedly) and asking, "why am I laying my traumas at their feet" is one thing I will never forget. I fired him mid session.
    I will never go back to better help. The fact that this type of therapist is allowed on the platform let's me know that they are not the safe space they purport to be. Don't use better help!

    I tried better help because I thought it might be a better alternative to the current mental health system. It can be very difficult to get a therapist. The two biggest issues being wait times and insurance. It can take months to get in to see someone. I also have difficulties because I'm bipolar. There are some therapists who will not even consider me as a client. So my options are limited. With insurance, I have medicaid in Oregon. But, you can be on open card or with a coordinated care organization (CCO). I have a CCO and most people only take open card. I don't know what the difference is but it must matter. Anyway, I had two really terrible therapists who traumatized me. I am not surprised by any of these horror stories.

My psychiatrist (who is amazing, I've seen her for over a decade) once said after I asked if I could succeed in mental health while getting therapy myself, "everyone in the mental health care field who says they aren't seeing a therapist/have never seen a therapist themselves is either lying or should not be working in this field." And I totally agree. Having a history of trauma/mental illness can help so much in helping your clients make progress in healing. The important part is not entering the field until your past trauma/mental illness is manageable and not running your life, and taking a break if you have a relapse of symptoms.

It was very much just a weekly venting session and I feel sad because I’ve been put off from therapy since then because I don’t want to waste any more money. All of my issues have gotten much worse though so I’m leaning more towards therapy as a necessity at this point. The hard part is motivating myself to take the chance again but in person this time 🙃

He even stopped teaching as a professor and limited his private clinical practice to make more videos and live off that income. He's one of the most trusted and outspoken youtubers on therapy ethics for therapy students. He ignores pleas to stop advertising Betterhelp in his reality TV reaction videos. She explicitly used her bad relationship as reasoning to encourage me to cut off my mother. I needed to set boundaries with my mom, but those should have not been influenced by my therapist's inability to emotionally regulate in session. As a LPC (licensed professional counselor) i hate to say this (i really do) but most therapist/counselors don’t know what the hell they’re doing. Although I have an advanced degree, im licensed to practice in my state and Im nationally certified, I pretty much abandoned the industry because it was not giving me what I needed to help my clients. After all the years of investing time, money, effort and energy in coursework, exams, supervision, etc. in my counseling profession endeavors, i still found much more solution focused modalities from going to coaching trainings. I’ve even tried to go to counseling myself when my own life got too hard to handle and after two sessions with any of them, i was done so please know this is not just a “Better Help” issue. Its the industry general This is why most conscientious counselors and therapists are going the coaching professional development route. People harp on Iyanla Vanzant all the time about the fact she’s not a professionally trained therapist. But she 10x better and many therapist/counselors could learn somethings from her.

    I tried pride counseling before I knew it was actually betterhelp and it went pretty bad. I though it would be a good alternative to all of the therapists in the Provo area who are all booked three months out, but nope. The website promised all the therapists on there were specialized in LGBT+ counseling but the second therapist I got (after the first one ghosted me after a single session) was so very clearly clueless when it came to LGBT+ issues. She had to ask me what an asexual person is like she’d never even heard the term before, she felt the strange need to assure me that she has gay friends (which is usually something I only hear right before someone says something homophobic), she weirdly tried giving advice in the form of Bible quotes, and she didn’t seem to have any idea how to advise or encourage a queer person trying to survive in a highly conservative university/community/family. On the bright side, when I reported this to ask for a refund since I was only three weeks into the month of service I had to pay for in advance, the pride counseling person who responded to my report was actually really apologetic and granted me a full refund!

    I agree with you on 16:02, that because therapy also constitutes as treatment it must happen at sepcific pre-determined locations and times to help clients learn structure. Usually people who seek mental health services lack that, so having that structure and responsibility in part helps them to be responsible and accountable. If BetterHelp is neglecting all safety issues, forcing a client back-log and not ensuring bare-minimum therapist ettiquette, we need to throw the whole thing in the trash then.

      @@Stettafire from a grammatical perspective yes, probably-but if you read the whole thing it comes together. If it wasn’t clear I can clarify. The point is to structure treatment. What I commented on was the need to set an appointment and a pre-determined location. By pre-determined location there is nothing in my comment that excludes remote or online. It includes that. The time stamp was the direct comment to BetterHelp encouraging/providing “the ability to text your therapist anytime” which deprives people the opportunity to self-regulate (or the most appropriate thing that I don’t have the vocabulary for right now). My Comment has as time stamp for a reason. Structure is necessary regardless of whatever group you’re from. I am not against remote / online therapy- just the lack of structure.
      Also, even if it worked, texting your therapist may not be efficient if they are busy etc… so trauma response lines could work better in assisting people who are overwhelmed.
