Last month my mother fought with me and spoke ill of me for being ‘bitter’ about the fun she was having with the app because I wouldn’t download it and sign up with my email to create an* account and spin a stupid wheel for a stupid game they set up, that allowed her to make free purchases of stupid things she doesn’t need.
I try to tell my mom but she doesn’t believe it. She’s like omg these shoes & clothes are so great and a great price. I didn’t like anything she showed me.
Omg yes!!! My mom buys from Temu and I tell her time and time again how cheap and horrible for humanity buying from there is but ahhh, they can be so stubborn because well they didn't have this before perhaps. Slowly I see people are waking up so that's great! ❤

“Shop like a billionaire” is such an insidious slogan. Shop like you have no regard for other human beings. No one needs to be shopping like a billionaire.
So true. But the Chinese government hates their own people and treats them like animals, so I'm not surprised when they missed the mark with that slogan. I hope their citizens will one day soon have better leadership
nothing comes for free, and everything has its price - I can't believe how people can look at an item marked as free and not have any alarms going off in their heads.
I blame overconsumption and influencer lifestyle that makes the average person rush to buy every and each new "in item" while knowing it's impossible to be able to afford everything. They probably hope some company even worse than Temu is gonna be made soon so that they can buy even cheaper stuff regardless of all the cons
I hate that generosity has been taught to be a sign of deception or entrapment because of the poor actions of others. I carry a backpack filled with water bottles and candy and snacks and cigarettes and medical supplies and hygiene products because I love to give gifts and surprise people with something nice for no reason. But I have to be so absolutely careful about how I do it, there's nothing harmful about offering a cigarette to someone taking out one of their own but trying to give sealed candy to a child is so horribly suspicious even though I just like people to know that the world isn't entirely harsh. generosity and friendliness is now seen as a suspicious thing because of people relentlessly pursuing their self-interest.
Because Wish’s marketing was shit, so no one cared for it because Wish didn’t actually give us a reason to or something eye catching. Temu however fired on all cylinders. Practically shoving you with Nintendo Switches, Xbox consoles, everyday needs and tools, and advertising they had everything on the planet with also having influencer sponsorships, with misleadingly incredibly low low prices that would get anyone’s brows raising. Wish however was like “you want it?… uh… we have it so, yknow use us” (atleast, that’s the kinda vibe I got from their ads when I rarely ran into them lmao)
lirtally whatever i search its almost all from temu😭, when im looking for something like a bra, i see the picture and im thinking “wowww thats pretty maybe this one 💭”, and then i look and its from temu 💩
These influencers buying “quirky“ items from Temu for content is funny until you realize that literal slaves had to work their butts off just so that we could all laugh at a TikTok.
Yes! I just got a shirt from a small shop and they gave me a thank you card and stickers too! It feels better knowing I'm giving my money to cool artists instead of a mega corporation, and the thank you gifts are super cute too
There are very few if any items in the style I want in my local shops. I have been shopping online since at least 2007 because I can't find exactly what I want locally. There have been periods where I had no other choice than to thrift because of low income, most of my thrifted clothes and homeware are being thrown out now because I'm buying in clothes and items I truly like and feel comfortable in. Very little of what I own is from Temu because I heard about this shop just a few months ago, but other online stores I'm buying from like Killstar has also been popular to warn against for at least 7 years now. Everything I like and feel comfortable with seems to come with a dozens of warning videos and forum posts, sigh. 🙄Despite all the warnings most of my shopping have gone smoothly. I have however had a lot of problems with small Etsy businesses, Ebay sellers and sellers on my country's national online marketplace.
@@lonewolf8667 These videos aren't specifically about you buying them, they're about the unethical practices of the corporations themselves. You don't have to consume that content if you don't want to.
@@sheatemyheartt You mean the Temu content? I'm not really into novelty products, so these videos she's showing aren't interesting to me. Not everybody are into buying random weird useless things just for laughs. Some of us just struggle to find specific items in local stores. Most of this over consumerism seems to be for videos and clicks. The problem is youtubers and tiktokers earning their income by making haul videos instead of serious and helpful review videos.
Temu has very dark pedo sides nobody is talking about. I fell down a dark rabbit hole , (unfortunately literally) on Temu after being suggested animal theme male “toys”…. Then in the suggested items for that item were more animal “toys” and …. Baby dolls. For some reason realistic soft baby dolls were suggested based on the animal male “self time toy”… there were hundreds of listings of realistic silicone babies suggested listed as sex toys. Alongside things like “pig castration tables” and animal hoohahs. It was the most DISTURBING rabbit hole I’ve ever fallen down.
I used to work in an Amazon warehouse and while I didn’t see things that bad, there’s also a huge amount of sales of similar toys on there like that. I never saw any babies but I did seem animal type things, and some dolls that seemed suspect.
My high school economics teacher always said, theres no such thing as a free lunch, somebody somewhere has to pay. Mrs. Evans drilled that in my brain, im glad she did. I havent used temu and politely declined it when my friend sent me a link that would "gift" both us. I tried to explain to her and make her aware of the labor, the identity theft....its not worth it. @@valentina905 it's extremely hard to shop ethically these days, I don't have money for sustainable fashion and the most ethically sourced items but I've worked for Amazon. In my culture (Slavic) there is a phrase “the miser pays twice.” If you don’t want to buy a high-quality item right away, then you will buy it later, after the low-quality one. But if a person continues to buy the same plastic crap over and over again, then this is something for us all to think about as a society. Thanks Ashley, spot on as always. ❤
My father is uber obsessed with temu. He buys 3-8 shirts on there a day. He’s always trying to give them to people and using “gifting” them or “maybe selling them in the future” as an excuse to buy them it’s insane

You know how much food companies fought AGAINST the addition nutrition labels on products? Product manufacturers are definitely fighting against releasing the labor conditions in which their products are made.
Never purchased on Temu, never will. The first time I ever heard of them was due to people's data being stolen. I think buying there is unethical. And if you're poor, you simpy can't afford cheap shit, as my mom says. PS. Your cat is so lovely🐈⬛

12:29 Reminding myself of the old proverb "Im not rich enough to buy cheap" really helps me stay away from sites like Temu and Shein and even Amazon to an extent. I can't afford to settle for the cheapest option then have to rebuy that item multiple times after just a couple uses. Not to mention the poor quality could actually be harmful to you depending on how the item is made or what its made of. For me, I feel It will always be more beneficial to save up and spend a little more for good quality that you only have to pay for once
I used this same reasoning when explaining to a family member why I spent $100 on a rain jacket instead of the $20 one from Walmart. Could I afford it? Not easily. But I will never need another rainjacket 🤷♀️
Finally someone spoke about the cycle of cheap stuff that are meant to break in a very short time! I watched a few people talking about temu, some of them were like "oh its for the people who cannot afford" er... no? Because it's not going to last, because it is made with dangerous chemicals and people will eventually spend more money there than buying one good thing. I learn my lesson when I bought a drawing tablet from a chinese brand (always chinese brands jfc!) it was so cheap, so good and people were talking about good things about that, yeah... it worked only for 3 months, and the warranty they didnt answer my emails! Thank god I bought on a marketplace from hardware store and they gave my money back, and I save up even more money and I bought another one from a very well known brand, an year and half ago and doesnt have any problem! My opinion, save up money and buy just one thing that is going to last more time.
I'm fairly poor and I manage not to buy plastic novelty crap because, well, I don't need it. I kinda don't believe the "But what about poor people" argument with regard to Temu.

My mother in law has packages coming to my house from Temu every week for my daughter. I’m very grateful for all the stuff that she gets her BUT -The clothes shrink after one wash, being washed on cold with organic detergent and being hung to dry. The clothing also rips and tears easier partly due to the seams being an absolute mess -The toys and hair accessories break almost immediately. I went to put one of these cute animal hair ties in my daughter’s hair and it broke before I’d even fully extended the elastic.
Please be very careful with the products you use from Temu on your daughter. These products aren't regulated and people have had reactions and been hurt before.

Love the video but it irks me when people mention "not accredited by the better business bureau" as a point when it means nothing. The BBB is a private company where people can pay to be "accredited." Its helpful for some small businesses as advertisement but means nothing for large and foreign companies, of which Temu is both

Thank you for spreading this message. This is so important to get the info out there because people will claim that they don’t know slavery is being used. Shamefull!! Once again thank you Ashley, great video once again 🤎.
Everyone should think twice before buying from Temu, Shein, etc. It’s not worth your money. I am absolutely scared to even think about all of the exploitation and environmental problems these shops produce. How can someone just close their eyes to that?
My close family member uses temu for school supplies / surprises as she’s a teacher and a lot of the things students get are bought by herself personally. I feel bad because she enjoys it, and it’s helping her. schools are notorious for not paying their teachers well enough or actually giving them workable budgets. However I still do not use it and will not. So I understand where some people who are struggling may need it. The ones who truly exploit in my opinion are those who do not need to buy cheaply made items and are doing 500$ hauls. It’s sad that there are still justifications for this type of platform tho 😞
There are some good supplies on there! Things get shady when you want to get cheap electrics and cheap clothes. The temu influencers who do big hauls I never respected. There is a lot of useless stuff on temu, BUT a lot of good craft supplies and it’s just skipping the middleman because I already know big name art stores and walmart already source their products from china.
@@mm-pm5lf Amazon outsources their products from areas of slave labor. If you have an iphone, you are also contributing to slave labor. It’s not just Temu, you can’t avoid it at this point unless you ONLY shop locally and ask where your local shops source their supplies from.
Thank you for this video! I saw a RUclipsr do a sponsored video for Temu and their excuse was that they have to pay for college. I questioned their ethics from that and where they draw the line 🤷♀️ this would be good to send over to them
Thank you for exposing this! You should definitely look into the overconsumption of textiles. It affects sub Saharan African countries. It known as the mitumba problem. All donated clothing is shipped to these countries, if they refuse them they risk loosing other aid (like food aid). Much of it ends up in landfills and in the ocean. Interesting topic. 😊
I think all the points that this video touches on are important, but personally, the slave labor was all the information I needed when I first found out, and I do kinda judge the people that don't consider that an immediate "nope". If we only condemn slavery when it's in the past, but are ok with participating in it ourselves when it's slightly more convenient, I think we really need to reevaluate our priorities and if we're trully THAT much different from those people in the past that we try to condemn and separate ourselves from
Love your videos Ashley. Obviously agree with everything you say, I’d add one more: the way that Temu is manipulating emotional reactions with overstimulating design, flash sales etc will influence our expectations toward other shopping experiences. Soon Amazon will start with gamification, because that is what people get trained to expect when using Temu.
Literally just got a Temu ad while watching this.... hilarious.... But thank you for this video Ashley and for bringing attention to Temu being a scam, so glad I went with my instincts not to use that shady app...
From the first time I saw a Temu ad, I thought it all seemed way too scammy and swore it off. My family has not done the same and yes, they now have a ton of useless items I see once and then never again, buried in a hoard of more cheap, useless stuff. I try to stick to small businesses I come across, and seeing the seller write little thank-you notes and add little stickers based on what I got is infinitely better than the soulless corporate stuff… or having my information stolen
I’m really happy every time someone posts a video about Temu etc there’s tons of comments that say they don’t buy from these sites. I live in a world where I know so many people IRL who buy from Temu.
There are things that I've bought from Temu that have been very nice. The key to ANY kind of shopping is that it needs to be purposeful. Buy only what you need. Not what you are influenced to buy.

But today, I am going to delete my information and the Temu app. Thank you again, Ashley! 💞💞
I never bothered with Temu when it first came out, because I was skeptical of the whole, getting stuff at really cheap prices kind of thing. Just seemed really weird to me. I will always support videos speaking against Temu. It frustrates me so much when I see videos like “I bought things from Temu so you didn’t have to.” They’re all the same. It’s one of two reactions every time, “wow this is better than I expected” or “wow this is terrible, just like I expected”. And then they just write it off on their taxes because it was for a video.
This was the first video I watched on your channel. I really like the way you talked about it, in a simple yet profound way. I was wondering about Temu myself as I saw a LOT of ads on Interent (and in general; bless you skin colour changing girl from ad), but I knew that there was a deeper meaning to their prices as they are so low so I didn't go down that that rabbit hole. Practically shoving you with Nintendo Switches, Xbox consoles, everyday needs and tools, and advertising they had everything on the planet with also having influencer sponsorships, with misleadingly incredibly low low prices that would get anyone’s brows raising.

Temu reminds me how important it is to shop small and shop local.

Wtf
I used to work in an Amazon warehouse and while I didn’t see things that bad, there’s also a huge amount of sales of similar toys on there like that. I never saw any babies but I did seem animal type things, and some dolls that seemed suspect.

I can't afford to settle for the cheapest option then have to rebuy that item multiple times after just a couple uses. Not to mention the poor quality could actually be harmful to you depending on how the item is made or what its made of. I used this same reasoning when explaining to a family member why I spent $100 on a rain jacket instead of the $20 one from Walmart. Could I afford it? Not easily. But I will never need another rainjacket 🤷♀️
It's to bad that even quality brands are dropping their standards
Finally someone spoke about the cycle of cheap stuff that are meant to break in a very short time! I watched a few people talking about temu, some of them were like "oh its for the people who cannot afford" er... no? Because it's not going to last, because it is made with dangerous chemicals and people will eventually spend more money there than buying one good thing.
I learn my lesson when I bought a drawing tablet from a chinese brand (always chinese brands jfc!) it was so cheap, so good and people were talking about good things about that, yeah... it worked only for 3 months, and the warranty they didnt answer my emails!

I told my mom for 2 weeks not to order from temu at all and told her the bad things that can happen and she wouldn’t listen and would laugh and say “oh I ordered it from temu “ and a month later she was getting charges from random places and y’all I was so fuckin mad at her that I yelled at her and snatched her phone , helped her figure out the card situation and took her phone and deleted her account . I WAS MAD YALL😭😭
Girly tysm!!! My parents love Temu. My dad is disabled and on disability so this video helped a lot. I can't even stand the thought of him or my mom having their info sold. 😭
