Luxury brands are conning people into spending insane amounts of money through deceptive manipulation tactics. Brands like LVMH, a fashion conglomerate that owns Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Fendi and many others are one such brand that marks up their items significantly through clever marketing and leveraging celebrities and luxury influencers to endorse them. It was recently revealed that Dior paid just $57 to produce a bag that they sold for nearly $2,800 to customers. They were also accused of using sweatshops similar to fast fashion brands like Temu and SHEIN. In this video, I deinfluence you from luxury brands by revealing the behind-the-scenes happenings of LVMH and other luxury brands that elucidate how little value luxury, and designer goods really have and how they are a direct result of worker exploitation. Through the overconsumption of luxury brands, we are complicit in the exploitation of workers across the globe.

Luxury brands are definitely a silly concept. There's nothing wrong with having something nice but when you feel the need to flaunt it to others because you think it will give you some kind of status is actually counterproductive. Most people don't really care how green another person grass is because they're too focused on their own grass. lol
but there *IS* something wrong with having something nice when it was made by exploited workers and caused environmental devastation.
The only brands I'll buy from that charge a higher price for their garments are either owned by one or two people, or have small warehouses and are ethically made. And I prefer to buy these things secondhand, anyhow. The garment might be 200 dollars, but it'll last 20, 30, 40 years. Some of these things I buy secondhand are 17 years old and still look perfect. That's the only time you should spend higher on clothes, imo. If they're genuinely well made and sustainable.
@@itsgoingtobeok-justbreathe4808You could literally say that avout most highstreet brands.
Most of these "luxury" items aren't even nice though. Truly nice pieces generally come from small, independently owned artisans who make beautiful clothes and accessories for much less than these "luxury" brands - and they'll be far more well made and longer lasting!
I agree, I don’t want to be an “elite”. I just want to live comfortably and not have to decide whether I should buy groceries or pay bills this week
Garfield just wants to sleep and eat lasagna. it's the simple things, really.
Even before knowing this i don't understand spending so much for a handbag. I can think of so many other things to spend my money on.
" A fool and their money are soon parted"😃😃😃
I got a new sewing kit and I just wanna make my own "luxury bags" lol.
I actually think you have a great idea! 😊

Like a chip bag style purse sounds like an excellent idea and takes like no time.
@@vvitch-mist20 A chip bag purse (or coin purse even) is cute and fun when its not nearly $2000. Maybe like $1000 MAX (/j)
@@ferretappreciator
Right. Like that's a $50 bag. It should only cost two grand if it's knitted/crocheted. At that point you paying for labor.
well done, as usual. I have to say, as someone who largely avoids social media and trends, I have never thought these things were desireable or attractive. Being a hermit probably isn't the answer for most people, but stepping back from the onslaught of media messaging definitely frees you up to see how things really are and makes you less vulnerable to their pressures. I think the real answer is to continue to nourish ourselves, body, mind and spirit-- true nourishment and healing, not products marketed as self care. When you feel good and balanced within yourself, you don't need to try to fill the void or seek external approval.
"We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like" ❤😊
My grandparents are from an overexploited country. My grandma's worst fear was that I'd become a seamstress, she had a physical reaction to the idea that i still remember. They paid their tailors well, and knew them by name. All my clothes were handmade by tailors my grandparents knew for the first decade of my life. Now I'm a second generation immigrant in a first world country, and i don't have the luxury of affording tailors like that, but i try my best to support non-colonial businesses, even if they're not artisan, and even if they really are fast fashion and the only thing i can afford. It sucks, but it's harm reduction for me. The cruelty of colonialism is truly unmatched, in my personal opinion, and any small move is a small move. I appreciate your colonialism-inclusive discussion of this topic. These things are bigger than simple overconsumption, there is a painful history behind it all. Really very grateful for your care and sensitivity to those very real workers facing generational struggles, my ancestors feel very seen ❤
Underdeveloped=Overexploited
From an italian i think there's very big problems in our country too many people in too many jobs that are used and paid too less too many families like mine barely getting over the line of the month and the scary perception that us student will never have a good job or be treated nicely (here in italy many job bosses? i don't know how to say it but they continue to be angry at us young people for not wanting an exhausting job for a pay that's less than enough to get a rent saying that we don't want to work) but the real probelm are the politicians that raise taxes and the price of everything but not the money we get at the end of the month i see too many people get only carts of water at markets because they work at fields and they get enough money to only get the cheapest things to survive such as water. it's a bad economical thing that affects all of us
It’s the same in the USA!
@@SusieQZee that's so bad im so sorry for you guys too it's like the world is going shit
thank you for sharing. as an american you’re taught so many misconceptions about the rest of the world. for example nationalism, every country has nationalism but no country waves their flags around like how america does. as children we would think europe was this great place with “ancient” rich history and luxury when thats barely the case. as children we think africa has nothing but poor starving children and tribes without the means to survive, which its true that some parts of africa are severely impoverished but im saying that’s what we thought of the whole continent. basically im saying our perception of the whole world is totally off, and reading things like this from people who live in europe is very dystopian to me and almost doesn’t make any sense, because of what i was taught. i wish you, your family, and all others struggling in italy the best. and i’m sorry that you are the one who has to experience the repercussions.
True luxury doesn't need a giant logo advertising where you bought the item from. If it's of good quality, then it would not have an overtly if not gaudy flashy brand logo on it
Sis understood the assignment!! Great video with a lot to think about. I hope we all can snap out of these delusions
Whenever I want something really nice and have the money to spend, I look for something high quality and made as ethically as possible. I don't really understand the obsession with brand names.
Why would ppl overpay for things is beyond me.
You can send pre-owned, second hand luxury items these days too. And while yes it'll be expensive in some cases, it's better than buying new.
b/c they can, b/c it will give them a sense of status, b/c it temporarily fills the void in their souls
It’s not the product they’re buying, it’s the exclusivity
Status and keeping up with Joneses
I saw another RUclipsr (sorry I can’t remember) explain that “luxury” is intended to be a different thing all together … like you go into a place wanting to make a purchase, you have a clerk or someone personally attending you and answering all questions, item is professionally packaged up, etc etc… you get like a whole unique experience… like yeah the shit is still overpriced… but at least it wasn’t paying “luxury” prices for a simple online order.
I had no idea that the LV bag patterns were stollen! I’ve never wanted or owned one, but I see them constantly and that’s just crazy how they exploited people.
I know this may sound bad and it might come across the wrong way, but this issue mainly affects women. It's sad because it keeps the stereotype of women being obsessed with fashion and clothes and luxury
Oh my gosh. The tribal mask bag!? Wow. That is so messed up.
this is very much a side tangent to the main point of the video, but also, luxury products do not inherently live up to their supposed promise of quality! louboutins, for example - the majority of their heels especially their stilettos are TERRIBLY designed and guaranteed to hurt like hell, because the heel of the shoe is placed at the back of the heel of the foot rather than at the center. it will never stop blowing my mind that that company charges hundreds to thousands of dollars for a product that completely fails to do its job
labeling someone a hater does not erase the facts!
So many luxury brands are so ugly too! Like if I’m gonna pay $1,000 for a bag (hypothetically), I want a beautiful quality bag , covered with like 3D fabric flowers. I want a dress that’s a gown covered in 3D monarch butterflies (not real of course). I see all of these luxury brands and rich people clothing and I’m like this looks so ugly! If I had “eff you” money, I would want creative beautiful pieces made of quality materials. It’s a much bigger “brag” (to me anyway) to be able to say “I paid top dollar for this quality bag, hand made and designed by people who were paid a liveable wage, and it’s a creative artistic piece I can carry with me”. Do any of you get what I mean?
Totally get what you mean. Like, nothing about a towel wrapped around your waist says 'luxury.' If I'm paying top dollar I want something beautiful and lasting. (I GUESS that after the towel skirt goes out of style you still have a really expensive bath towel, at least? Assuming it will function as a towel?)
To your point on the leather trade, I’ve been vegetarian for a really long day time, and I actually think wearing leather is better than the alternatives? Most of the times, the animal had already been killed, if anything you’re using the full purpose of the animal which is significantly more sustainable and higher quality than poly leather. Loved the vid❤
My dear Nan who was a very stylish AND wise lady always despised anything with a logo/branding on it. She always said, "Why would I pay money to advertise for someone else?!" lol. Still true today! Logos are not teally even starus symbols, as most truly wealthy individuals wouldn't be caught dead wearing them. Quiet and classic well made pieces are the way to go.
At this point, they’re just mocking poor people and seeing how far they would go to buy the brand. We’re social test subjects.
I’m so glad I grew up poor. Being poor made me realize how stupid it is to spend so much money on such frivolous things. My favorite store is the ¥100 store. A ¥3,000 ($30) purse is all I need. I don’t care what others think. If it’s functional, that’s all that matters.
22:00 "Labeling someone a hater does not magically erase the facts."
Dang the attachment between these brands and advertising is wildly insane
LOVE this. 1 thing abt the TikTok though: the “Greca” is from an ancient Greek symbol called meander (meandros) or the “key” design, which dates back to B.C.E. and is a very common motif in Greek art, so it wasn’t stolen from the Kuba tribe (not to defend these men-they still suck). However, Ancient Greek art and culture was often influenced by Africa and the Middle East through trade, which means the symbol could have similar, ancient origins, which is very cool. They likely saw this in Italy due to Roman ties to ancient Greece, but you can also see this motif in ancient China and Mayan art. BUT, still a big FU to all the assholes mentioned and I love how you are highlighting the all horrible things behind this industry.
I grew up in that fuzzy middle ground between poor and comfortable, and for the first seven years post-college graduation, I lived paycheck to paycheck. Despite that, I never once craved or wanted these so-called luxury brands. I think most of their stuff is flat out ugly (Louis Vuitton [sp?] bags, Coach purses, Ugg boots, ugly). Even once I was making a comfortable living, I still buy secondhand and love thrifting. The closest I've ever gotten to owning a luxury brand was a $3 Kate Spade knock-off I found at a charity shop. LOL
Out here looking like a Formula 1 race car when actually buying an F1 race car would be cheaper (and honestly way more fun)
Balenciaga is the trashiest most tackiest brand 🤢 I agree with your statement of it being a social experiment by setting high prices for stupid ass shit like a towel skirt, dirty shoes and potato chip bag, so people who are low income can claim it. It’s an absolute mess
Wow. This episode was incredible
Cecil Rhodes was a despicable human. He even named a country in African (Zimbabwe) after himself. I highly recommend the book Stoned by Aja Raden for insight in gems, including diamonds, including the dark side of them.
Whenever i see someone hoarding expensive items, like bags or shoes, i think they are just chasing something they will never have. Hoarding (not simple collecting) almost always has a mental issue attached, or something lacking in an emotional department.
Completely agree. Nearly everytime there's deep emptiness that fuels the desire to fill it with material goods.
Can I ask a genuine question. Why are these criticisms always aimed towards women? Womens interest in fashion and fashion houses (and yes some people see luxury bags as a part of a hobby) is denigrated as silly and frivolous and financially irresponsible but I never see men who have expensive watches or cars being talked about in the same way. Sometimes women are even shamed for purchases and told where they should have spent their own money elsewhere. Why are watches and fast cars ‘cool’ but bags are ‘silly’?There can be criticisms of the quality offerings and the impact of influencers, but if a woman just wants to buy an expensive bag and she has the disposable income for it, I really do not care 🤷🏼♀️
You are honestly right, we need to place men on the same pedestal we place women
Off the top of my head She literally said in the video that men buy luxury items too as a symbol of their power
And that these brands are owned by rich MEN exploiting the desires of men and women and discussed male rappers who show off their wealth too. In no way was it only a critique of women if you were paying attention.
@@genevievesingh3547There’s literally no need for the rudeness. I am not just talking about this video but the wider conversations that are happening on this topic. I also said ‘talked about in the same way’. I didnt say it wasnt talked about at all.
I've definitely seen plenty of people talk about the watch stuff. I think in general it focuses more on women because fashion overconsumption is mostly from women. Men rarely wear makeup, bags, or jewelry. All of which are expected and almost 100% ubiquitous with women.
Oh, men have their expensive interests: humungous trucks, hunting, fishing, boats, cars, guns, video games, car racing, antique cars, more cars, electronic toys, motorcycles. Golf. Yes, women play golf, but who really spends the big bucks on it? Plenty of men have an old car they're going to restore sitting in the garage. And closets and basements full of gear that's only been used once. Or never.
something i've noticed is high end brands have always been unethical, yet nobody talks about it. so many famous designers were nazis, had controversies, used slave labor, etc. but people only ever mention brands like shein. i'm not saying shein is innocent by any means, but it is quite ironic how high fashion brands are extremely wasteful, most times not even good quality, extremely problematic, etc. and yet people still defend them. it truly does just make me believe people only criticize affordable clothing brands because of elitism or classism.
My big problem is that I absolutely love the Toile de Jouy Dior Book totes. The 2018(?) jungle themed one has my heart, the design is gorgeous.
But I've seen many reviews saying that the quality of the stitching and embroidery is really subpar, so I guess that's saving me a couple grand...
I still admire the fabric, though.
Balenciaga is absolutely shitpost fashion and I'm very sure they're in on their own joke.
Highly agree. Their shit is so ugly
First, you laugh so beautifully! (God bless ya). Second, believe it or not..i do not own even one single luxury item...big or small (despite doing a job that pays me just enough to actually be able to buy one or more if I can save a little more for say, 3/4 months. I simply don't...feel the need. The stuff i use aren't branded but most of them I've been using for years😅. Today's video was lit 👍🏽
I’ve never really been a designer girly, but I have once thought about buying a LV bag bcs I liked their designs. After learning more about these designer brands.. I think I’ll save my money or find something similar but cheaper bc that’s crazy . The world we live in now is bad but I couldn’t imagine working all day for such low income, it really changed my perspective, the most expensive bag I’ll have is probably Marc Jacobs 😭
Can also seek out local leather workers that make leather goods for a good price, and you can talk to them about custom pieces. All will be way cheaper and better quality than "luxury"
The only “luxury” purses I buy are Coach. They are very affordable & last. I’ve bought many of my purses used which saved me money.
I love luxury, but I buy them second hand... never paying full price LMAO
I buy first grade replicas from turkey. I’d get the social status for the same price they made the bags before inflating it
the town i live in has a factory making luxury goods (definitely for burberry, not sure what else as its only known by the people who work there and their friends) and the way the workers there earn enough money is by taking some stuff and selling them secondhand for less than it goes for (probably like 10% of the actual price its sold for) just because thats how little it costs to make it!!!
Good content! I have seen these new cloth cardboard bags everywhere. They are ugly.
Thank you Ashley
Apple is no different.
I am so happy to see you did a video like this!!! You and I share the same sentiments. I never aspired to be rich or wanting more of, I like to be comfortable where I can connect with those I love and love me back. I never liked buying “name brands” I have no shame wearing inexpensive clothes as long as it look goods on me. I am happy you made a video like this to bring awareness to these issues ! Thank you for the amazing work!!! ❤❤❤
WAKE UP GUYS QUEEN POSTED
love this video, so important to educate as many people as possible on this topic! thankful for channels like yours!
You speak deep truth, My Sister.
i study marketing and we learn that in the case of popular brands you're not just marketing/advertising the product, you're marketing your brand name and image as a whole.
at one point the company moves from making/selling good quality or convincing products to trying to get widespread recognition for their brand name, the name itself becomes the product the costumer is buying, and it also creates loyal costumers cause they want to keep the image that owning the brand name gives them.
Yah but consumers usually correlate price with quality. They're just paying for the brand at this point ibr😭😭. Which is fine, many businesses fit this model, it just seems like a rip off to me personally.
But this Strategy does take time to pull off. So honestly they're successful
okay i’ll admit i do have a problem, as much as i want to never buy luxury ever again, sometimes im just too tempted and digging deeper i feel like a bit of it is attached to my self worth, and ive been trying so hard to work on that!
you said it well girl
Why would you WANT to pretend you're on a private jet lmao, like "look how wasteful I am!
Thank you for your candor M'lady. An old adage comes to mind, that "A fool and their money are soon parted" Aspiring to kindness, justice amd fairness is a much higher calling that that of aspiring to become wealthy, or to appear wealthy. Be well and happy❤
Ugggghh 😂 I wish we could be friends lol I would love to hangout with ppl who have a similar mindset as me 😂
Loved this video! I thought like you almost all my life and I was the odd one or the un cool one still am to this day...
This is why i proudly shop from low prices luxury brands like Kiana Celeen Ooomay, low price, luxury, high quality without ripping your bank
Excellent video! I like how you think.
I want to get rich only to be able to fund scholarships. That’s my financial goal. That will be my future rich person goal lol.
It’s just a name of a designer. It’s really sad how some are being treated for their said brands to succeed.
Some businesses are greedy!
It’s not worth standing in line and waiting for these unnecessary things. These designs also stain easily.
“What is it if you gain the world but forfeith your soul?” It’s a shame some Celebs are also greedy and blind to support wrong things.
Exactly. People think material items will bring them happiness, but that's never the case for long as it's human nature to then want more and more. True happiness comes from helping and loving others, not from a bag or pair of shoes.
The empty chip bag having 1 item left😮. My flabbers are gasterd😮😮😭
I always wanted a VL handbag but I would never spend that much on a handbag and after further investigation I don't desire it anymore
Majority of that stuff is tacky as hell.
Its worth whatever People pay for it,its never about the quality, its about the brand and they could mark up the price as much as they want as long as People keep buying it
Some are made and run down buildings and sweatshop light conditions
Great video❤
I'm sorry, but if you buy an empty chip bag luxury purse you deserve everything whatever comes after. 😂
So well said 👏
Luxury brands: you cannot buy our stuff if you cannot afford and not certified by us, but if you can afford by agreeing to us tracking all of your income and your information, you are a certified stupid rich person. Give us money BB. 😂
I fucking love this channel ❤
Oooo I’m early! Ready to see how we’re being scammed by the rich! 😀
Goodwill BABBYYYYYY
me and my entire family and my entire circle of friends have been boycotting luxury brands since forever (we dont have money to buy them 😂)
UNCLAIMINGGGGG 💗💗💗💗💗
If you flash, you have no cash. I'll keep my money in investments and let compound interest do its thang. 😉
the real rich people don't show off their wealth, unless they have low self-esteem and are trying to prove something (e.g. have low self esteem so need to get a luxury [insert status object] to let everyone know how successful/important/lucky they are). I mean, you do you, but don't take yourself too seriously and think you're better than someone else just because you've got something that they don't.
Have I bought luxury before? Yes. I’m not really about it anymore just bc it’s not worth it. I feel like my goals are bigger and there are brands like coach who make really cute bags for less than half the cost if we’re talking handbags.
I came from very humble beginnings and at first luxury just felt like wow I got out of that but it’s really not. I think it’s a trap and we’re making the super wealthy more wealthy and I wanna spend my money on experiences and things that aren’t depreciating assets.
I used to drive a really rinky dink car and in 2021 I bought a 2018 Honda sport touring and I was in so happy. Then that got old and I wanted more but I paid this off at the beginning of the year and I feel I made a really smart decision not to buy something crazy so I can boost my life in other ways instead of a fat car payment. It’s so hard not to be tempted… you get fomo and you feel like you worked really hard and deserve it but you actually deserve better. Nowadays the quality isn’t even there as they cut corners. Just saying!
Disclaimer: I’m not trying to talk anyone down. We all have the option of choice and you do what’s right for me. I do like to advocate for a life of frugality bc I think in the long run there is more reward for bigger things.
