I might be neurodivergent but it's just baffling to me how the phrase "There's no ethical consumption under capitalism" leads people to "Therefore, my consumption is okay" and not "Therefore, all consumption should be questioned." It makes no sense.

Well, at some point you do have to buy things to live (such as food, clothing, and also sometimes things for hobbies to stay mentally sane). Every purchase is bad under capitalism, but at some point you do actually have to let go and make the purchase. So I guess some people just let go of thinking about _every_ purchase.

I stopped donating clothes in 2024 because they might go into a landfill if not sold quickly. I'm now parting out the clothes I used to donate and making them into clothes that fit me... At 62 I'm what is called working poor and there is no way am I buying fast fashion if I can help it. Weak fragile clothing can be made into rag rugs... I'm not willing to trash another persons hard work. Is my consumption under capitolism ethical? Who knows! I simply decided that "waste not, want not" is my new clothing rule for the next however many years I live. Some people live to shop, I live to sew...

My style in fashion is "what lasts me keeps". A hoodie I bought ten years ago but still looks like new, will stay on my closet. A shirt I bought last week and can't handle it's first wash won't stay - and I'll make a note to not buy on that store again. Which means that I'll be buying the majority of my clothes second hand, because on the second hand store you can see the clothes that have been used and still look fine.

    • @dustywolf9595
      @dustywolf9595 5 месяцев назад

Wow nice! I'm sorta of doing the same thing. I don't want to donate any clothes anymore because of the fear they will go to a landfill so I want to turn them into new clothes or perhaps a rug one day, but I've been so busy and I don't have a lot of space to keep things around so I'm torn between wanting to downsize and not wanting to unintentionally send more stuff to a landfill.

YESSSSSS! Like, I'm disabled, and on a limited income, and I manage to avoid Temu. I do not want to contribute to anyone's suffering! Also, I love the message about doing SOMETHING. It reminds me of a meme that was about mental/physical energy, but I think it applies - If you can't whole-ass something, half-ass it. If you can't do that - quarter-ass it, i.e. doing something is better than nothing. I have to ration my money and energy so carefully, but I want to do what I can, so I try.

Yes, all that, 100%. My other huge problem with Temu is that it's taken over google search so totally that it's really hard to find a product link that's not Temu, when I legitimately need something. I'm not trying to say that it's unavoidable (on the contrary, I'd never buy anything from the likes of Temu), only that even google search is making the situation worse. (I know, that's a problem with google search too in general, especially how sponsored links overtake the useful ones but I feel like that problem is an other topic altogether...)

Temu and Shein are two companies that will never get my money or be given space on my technology.
Walmart and Amazon already get enough of my money (both because cost..... reasons, and Amazon, well, I can only get quite a bit of things from there that I would not otherwise be able to get by other means such as my large canisters of Gatorade powder as I go through alot of Gatorade due to dysautonomia causing hypovolimea, replacement iv pump batteries and quite a lot of necessary cpap essentials such as filters along with items that make using the necessary cpap therapy more comfortable). Walmart has a whole other problem, but as I have some chronic illnesses that have made going into stores of any kind the equivalent of being tortured, I'm able to order groceries online and then have them delivered to me.
Yes, I'm aware of how bad both of these companies but I at least only use them because I'm not able to avoid them unless I want to land myself in the hospital because of stressing my body out.
Temu however, yeah, that shit of a "company" needs to go away. I would rather die than give my money to that garbage of trash.

I am desperately poor right now. Im unable to work due to illness and dont qualify for any type of assistance. I have to think about where every single cent goes. I deny myself even basic comforts often. Using heat or a/c for my home is laughably out of the question. I dont own a peice of clothing that didnt come from the 50 cent rack at the thrift store. I downloaded temu knowing how unethical it is, but also needing the cheapest possible way to get household items and things like socks and underwear. I still have never placed an order. Every time im tempted I still feel horrible contributing to such a destructive business model so i just go without. I look at all the cute, cheap items and just tell myself its not worth it. It makes me sad to live in a world where i cant even afford a cute pair of socks to brighten my day, and distract me from not being able to afford medical treatement that would let me work again.
I go and fill a basket with things i wish i could have, then just close the app. It makes me mad that there are people who can afford those basics and still spend money so carelessly.

Buying anything from anywhere has environmental impact. Even the most sustainable places in the world. Second hand is better but that can also have an impact because they have already been used and therefore might not have as long of a life in your home. I think there’s balance tho because some of the better quality sustainable brands are so expensive and that isn’t accessible for every family and budget. So I just try to do the best I can and not stress. One thing clothing wise is I’ve stopped buying any type of plastic materials like polyester or rayon. Cotton, Linen, Hemp, or Wool and maybe Bamboo. These materials last me a lot longer so I’m not having to replace them as fast.

I decided to buy a number of items at Temu within the past year. (Under $200 USD. All at "greatly reduced prices".) Every item was cheaply made: even the better ones. Some broke. Others smaller than you'd expect. Similar items were priced lower at stores in my city than Temu's "greatly reduced/on sale items" and much better condition. I'll never shop at Temu again.

The concept of "it didn't cost much, so I won't feel bad if it breaks, falls apart, is out of style a year from now and I throw it out" is running rampant! I would like to hear what you think about companies such as Thread Up. Is their approach working? I often debate if buying second hand items online is a good idea due to not being able to know if it will fit right until it has already been shipped to you. Anyway, love your videos and no nonsense attitude ❤

Good for their bank account for sure, but at whose cost?

As a joyful, appreciative and staunch TEMU fanatic, this video "triggered" me. I wrote out a GIANT angsty response but here I am, deleting it, to post the last few sentences of my diatribe. "Telling me that "people are suffering" simply gives me "yeah, and what's NEW?" attitude because EVERYONE is "suffering"...and I guess I've gotten numb, or maybe I'm tired of not measuring up to everyone else's superior ethical standards. That being said, I'm STILL on a mission to find out the real, nitty gritty truth about "forced labor" and barbarity that Temu/Shein actually utilize. I want to find out if it actually tugs at my conscience and gets me to give up on new, stylish clothes, on household gadgets that help me function better, on those cool freaking sobriety medallions that make me feel like a total badass when I bump into them . I thought there was a documentary or two specifically about TEMU or SHEIN and the impact they had...socially, physically, financially, environmentally, politically, etc. If anyone knows of any of those, please post them below. That's why I clicked on this video in the first place. I'm challenging my love for TEMU. 20 years ago I gave up eating animal products when I finally READ/SAW something graphic enough to reach me. 2 years ago I completely changed my stance on trans-ideology by rigorously challenging my tightly held opinions. 5 months ago I totally, willingly, stopped drinking... after 45 years of being the worlds BIGGEST, BEST, and HAPPIEST, high-volume drinker. I can change and I'm willing to. I just won't give up something I appreciate simply because I hear that it's BAD. Send me links, ideas, ....even insults if you feel you have to. I'm VERY curious about changing my views on utilizing TEMU. Thanks folks, thanks for the video Gittemary Johansen

Loved this, I genuinely get frustrated when someone I know buys a bunch of stuff from Shein/Temu, I'm autistic and I have a HUGE social justice moral and as soon as someone says they buy stuff from Shein or Temu I'm like "Minus I don't know how many points in friendship". I do try to thing why they would need to buy from there because I also swore at once to never buy from Amazon, but there are so many things that I needed and that aren't available where I live because Portugal is always decades behind on utility stuff and so I had to buy from Amazon.
Still, I think it's better to buy from other brands just like Primark, H&M etc. because yes, they are fast fashion, but I think it's better than Shein/Temu. I know someone who is an ex-bestfriend who, at the start of the pandemic, bought stuff from Shein almost everyday. I loved this person so much and I tried to talk to them about the whole ethical, environmental and labour issues Shein has, but they didn't care so yeah. I understanding that they were going through somewhat of an identity crisis and buying a bunch of new clothes that they personally liked helped them with that, but nowadays I only see them wearing half or less of what they bought during that time...

Another comment I heard to justify their prices (and those of similar companies) is that it is a fair price to pay for the consumer because the workers are getting paid little to no money, so spending more money on the same item would be wasting money because some middle person makes a disproportianate profit compared to the costs of making. Like, wtf? I still can't get over this reasoning 😭

I am 35 and you are so right. I am well aware and have a deep hatred for wish, aliexpress, H&M, even before Shein and Temu (which are worse imho), BUT, my neighbour lady, who is in her 40's, and my sister of 33 they both buy from Shein and Temu as if their lives depend on it. I tell them it's bad and why it's bad, but they come up with reasons like 'I dont have time to shop physical stores, I don't have much money blablabla..' They will not actually listen to valid reasoning and will not see why exactly their choices are badly affecting other humans. They refuse to see it. I am a Japanologist with a lot of Asian studies under my belt, recent years I have focused on China a lot. The proof of the labor camps in Xinjiang is there, that is basically slave labor, as well as the way sites like Temu advertise with 'free shipping' being a trait granted to China for identifying as a third world country, giving it the perk to enjoy shipping anything around the world without costs, giving it even more reason to keep polluting. It just doesn't land when I tell people about these things, exploitation, pollution. (China pollutes 5x more than the USA does in a year).. I hate the world we live in, and I won't have children. I would not want to do to anyone to be born in this world, on this planet, at this time. It has come this far. We are using up the resources to make crap products and we are sucking nature dry. Take this comment as you will, but it feels like fighting the sea with a bucket of sand.

I like how people like to think that "sustainable" slapped on a brand or product automatically means it's good....people like electric cars for example, without even looking into how the actual electricity is made, you have to take a look at the big picture too, while electric cars themselves don't have emissions while you drive them, look at how the electricity is made in your country or where it comes from, take a look at the mines where oil comes from, charcoal and even the lithium and metals, if you can, use public transport or use a bike for short distances, that's going to make a huge difference as well. But most importantly: EDUCATE EDUCATE EDUCATE

In Ukraine, if you are this young and fun middle class, you buy clothes from Ukrainian designers and manufacturers. And don't get me wrong, its always at least the same price as Zara and H&M, but buying from Ukrainians gets you a great quality, unique design, and you support your own economy which makes it patriotic

There is something like that everywhere, Amazon and many American or European brand can also have it, but it seem like that is ok in the eyes of other. Also, not everything made in China is resolved of force labor. In fact people so use to black listing everything from China with the claim of force labor that it start to sound like you just throw everything on it.
