    I think we should talk about the sustainability downfall of Native. They used to be the beacon of sustainability to me and now they're bought out and hardly offer any of their scents in cardboard. And have an endless amount of things coming out now beyond deodorant that are in no way plastic free. Its so disheartening

    One important thing all of us can do no matter which detergent we use is using less! Unless you have really bad stains or incredibly dirty laundry, a fraction of what is recommended on the package often works just fine. Gradually lower the amount so you find the sweet spot for your detergent!

    Omg that's me! Thanks for the shoutout :) I'm sooo upset these brands hid this. You touch on so many important things such as it's so hard to find much data on them in general but especially about comparing it to other laundry options. Thank you for also explaining very well what poly means, cause I'll admit, it got me at first too! I sure hope there is a future where we can treat PVA better and also that these terms can be regulated cause technically all these brands are saying truthful things if you don't look at it to closely haha. I felt the same about the brands, too, like why are they skirting the issue so much? Overall this was an excellent video and I'll be encouraging everyone watch it if they have PVA questions.

    I've got some issues (I'm on the spectrum with tactile adversions and allergies/intolerances to fragrances) with the vast majority of laundry detergent. At this point, I only have two safe brands of detergent (one is no longer sold and the other has two different scents I can choose from). As my options don't come in any form other than liquid, I opt to buy the largest size I can at the most concentrated amount that is available in my price range. In order to make the detergent last as long as possible while still cleaning my laundry, I only use ⅓ of the recommended amount for the smallest load of wash (my loads of laundry are still a full load) and water that amount down.
    So far, the longest I've been able to make a jug of detergent last has been just shy of two years.

      I’m also autistic and have ten billion allergies (yay, MCAS), especially with laundry detergent. Every liquid I’ve ever tried has given me a reaction.
      I made it two years using Molly’s Suds powder before I started having a reaction to it (or I just had an MCAS flare; it can be hard to tell sometimes), so I decided to try detergent sheets.
      I just finished my first package of Inso Green sheets, and I really liked them. The MS powder had reduced my itching and reactions by about 75% compared to liquid, and the Inso Green knocked that down by another 50% of the MS itching. So very, very minimal itching.
      I bought a package of 40 full sheets for $10 back in early October, and I just finished it today, January 9th.
      It also makes laundry easier from a sensory standpoint. I can’t stand getting liquid or powder on my hands (but especially liquid), but the sheet actually has a somewhat pleasant texture to it for me. It’s kind of stretchy, and it’s super thin. Almost like a single layer of freshly baked croissant, where if you put it on your tongue, it’ll just dissolve immediately.
      Not that I want to eat detergent sheets; I just really love that particular texture. 😅

    I use unscented, sensitive powder in a cardboard box. Also line dry 90% of my laundry, only excluding my king bed bedding as line drying in the amount of space we have is very difficult. Good to know that these too things still make a big difference!

    Another thing to consider when using washingmachine detergent pods is that they contain a certain quantity of detergent for a certain size of a laundry load. If you have a machine/ a load smaller than that quantity you're using too much, if it's bigger you're using too little, to get your clothes clean. So you always have to meet exactly the size of a laundry load to make it the most efficient. The quantity of detergent powder or fluid on the other hand can be adjusted to the needs of your personal load of laundry, which makes them in that aspect the better choice.

    I really wish we had a LCA for this one. Knowing what the pollution/emission related to shipping and the construction of the packaging might make a big difference here. For instance, a plastic detergent bottle takes up more space in a shipping container and there is a lot of wasted space around the bottle due to the irregular shape of the cap. Not to mention that the bottle is made of plastic and not paper. Powder detergents can be shipped more efficiently (due to the square-ish shape) and come in paper, which I do think is more environmentally friendly. The sheets come in paper packaging too, but are essentially flat, which probably allows them to ship significantly more units per shipping container vs even powdered detergent in a cardboard box, resulting in significantly less emissions per wash. I’ll be sticking with my laundry sheets for now, but definitely can’t fault people for going with powder due to concerns about PVA.

      I haven’t tried their powder detergent, but I love BioKleen.
      I spent several weeks trying to find a good multi surface cleaner for my dog training club. It needed to be safe around dogs, fragrance free, affordable, and actually effective, which many natural cleaners are not, unfortunately.
      BioKleen ended up winning, and let me tell you, we’ve bought quite a bit of it at this point due to how well it cleans the things that we don’t need sanitized (we bring out the heavy duty shit for that; can’t risk spreading various canine diseases throughout the club). I’m really impressed by how well it works on all of our miscellaneous equipment, tables, kennels, etc… I love it.
      I was also looking at their drain cleaner this past week, but decided to go with a different product that’s entirely enzymatic and has amazing reviews.

    Hi! We toggle between a laundry concentrate that is a refill by Roots and Splendor that is a Castile soap base with five different plant enzymes and I am lucky that it is made relatively close to me. We also use laundry sheets, EcoClean sheets. Last time I did the research on them it came up that it’s a plant based Poly Alcohol and the enzyme used to break it down is regularly used in our water treatment facilities. After seeing this I feel like I need to go through and get the name of the enzyme and double verify. Thank you for all your research❤

    One of the most interesting analysis on the channel. I sometimes feel it's pointless to analyze in such details products that are in fact the most sustainable option we will ever come up with (most probably) and that it simply makes people have doubts if they even should bother to try to look for more sustainable options, while we see polution around us in such a massive scale. But such videos are so pleasant to watch, they show how the process of thinking abut sustainability and products in general should look like. I simply cannot stop enjoying them, even when I know they will not change the world to any substantial degree. Anyway, I think this is one of the best materials I have ever seen on youtube when it comes to the approach to its subject.

  • @racheljames9187
    @racheljames9187 7 месяцев назад +2

    A well balanced review Gittemary... I did my own research on this some time ago. Whether PVA can break down depends on the conditions at the treatment plant, and can vary over time too... in my own state, many plants are designed to spill partially treated sewage automatically during high rainfall (to protect the infrastructure at the plant... spilling partially treated sewage during a high rainfall event where it's being diluted by rain is different to a spill of partially treated sewage at another time), and remote locations might only have primary sewage treatment. At the moment I am buying powder detergent plastic free (the cups were eliminated from most detergent boxes in Australia some time ago), and have always washed in cold water and not had access to a drier for over 15 years.

      I’ve been using soap, nuts too. Sometimes they don’t get my clothes as clean as the laundry sheets do. So sometimes I use a combination like one load i use a laundry sheet and then the next load soap nuts. But I find the soap nuts are really good except for stain removal. They’re not good for stain removal. But my skin really likes the laundry that’s done with soap nuts. I have very sensitive skin.

      You should be able to choose "no soap" on your machines so you can choose your own? If you're paying by the load though, that means you'll double-pay for soap 😢.
      Big systems like that usually have benefits of scale though - they don't get hundreds of little bottles, and overall probably save a lot environmentally by encouraging full loads and getting bulk detergent. Fewer people use a drier too when they have to pay up front the cost of each load.

    You can buy powdered laundry detergent in a cardboard box or concentrated liquid detergent. That gives you more control over how much detergent that you use, I use less and wash longer. I alternate washing without detergent because clothes don't completely release all the detergent.

    Another issue with the sustainability of laundry detergent is that some of them tend to be harsher on your clothes and washing machine! The impact of powder itself might be lower than that of a liquid, but if it wears down my clothes and my washing machine faster, then I don't know what is more sustainable in the long term (and it's really hard to measure as well because a lot of this depends on other aspects of usage). Personally I settled on using a liquid detergent from a more eco-friendly brand in recycled plastic packaging, but I did recently buy a powder in cardboard packaging for my white laundry, as it's supposed to be better at removing stains. I came to the same conclusion as this video that only washing when needed, doing full loads when possible, and air drying are much more important than what detergent you use!

    • @Serena-or7sl
      @Serena-or7sl 6 месяцев назад

      My washing machine doesn't wash really well on a full load, at least for the detergent I use.I prefer to wash looooong cycles with 1/2 of the suggested detergent and leaving a bit of space in the drum so that clothes have the possibility to move better. The long cycles use the same water as the short ones, but require less detergent for a small amount of electricity more. I was cold anyway.

    • @itsjustlenneke
      @itsjustlenneke 6 месяцев назад

      @@Serena-or7sl I was always taught that a full load means you still need to have some space on top to allow your clothes to move! If I do a really full load, the washing cycle takes hours, so I try to find a sweet spot between not too little but not too much either. But yeah, I definitely think what "sustainable laundry" looks like is different for everyone and depends on so many different factors. For instance, I air dry everything now but if I have kids and a lot more laundry I'll probably buy a dryer for things like bed sheets and towels.

      When I lived in an appartment I used to hang a special drying rack at the door. Towels can hang just fine. Sheets I used to fold in half and hang like a zigzag on the rack. Now I am living in a three-storey house I hang the same rack at the attic in the stairway. Now my sheets can fully hang. I never owned a dryer and I do have 2 children ( now teenagers).

      If it’s humidity that’s the issue you will need to use a dehumidifier in the space and empty it manually keeping an eye on it. I had to get one at my last address as was getting mould. made a difference. You can dry in 1 day or less instead of 3-4 days. It’s cheaper to run than dryer or AC. humidity in the room should be around 47% if you have a window area with sunlight that can be opened to vent it will help dry the sheets. If the walls feel damp or it’s longer than a day it’s humidity problem.

    I've been using enzymatic powder detergent for colors/30°C and non-enzymatic for white/hot laundry and if needed some oxi bleach powder if it is really dirty since I was a pre-teen starting to do my own laundry. Plus it is plastic free because it comes in cardboard bag or box. Don't buy these huge value boxes though because they are full of filler and can cause issues with not dissolving. I am convinced this is all one needs, pods or these sheets make no sense because you can't control the dosage. Is it so hard to put 2 tablespoons of powder every time you wash clothes? Do we need to reinvent the wheel?
    Same goes for the dishwasher, I use powder and salt and rinse agent separately, why does everyone seem to prefer tabs. (Unless you have something like hand arthritis).
    Currently I like the powders by ooohne, they are few ones I can find that are unscented and include a water softner.

    I'm sticking with the lundry sheets. I am disabled so picking up a jug of liquid or a box of powdered laundry soap is physically hard on my body I'm talking about torn muscles type of hard. I can't recycle the plastic jugs or the platicized boxes... so I take my chances with the poly vinyl alcohols.

    I just finished my first package of Inso Green that I bought back in October (three months!), and I loved them. I decided to try Tru Earth, mainly because I just like trying new things, and they’ll be arriving tomorrow.
    I switched to powder back in 2021 after years of constantly itching with liquid detergent, even the “free and clear” brands. Molly’s Suds fragrance free powder has been fantastic, and is actually really cheap when you look at how long it lasts, but I wanted to try sheets.
    My itching reduced by about 75% when I switched from liquid to powder, and easily reduced by another 50% with the sheets.
    I have a disorder called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, where my body overproduces mast cells and histamines. The most obvious symptom is constant, intense itching (it has some really awful symptoms as well, but I’ll leave you to google those), and I develop allergies to products very quickly. So I can start out with a product being fine, but after a few weeks I’ll start having a reaction to it. Thankfully, this hasn’t happened yet with dryer sheets, but was starting to happen with the MS powder. It’s possible that the reaction will go down if I ever switch back, but it’s not guaranteed. For now, I do still wash my dog’s diapers with the MS baby unscented powder.
    One thing I really like about the detergent sheets is that I can easily adjust the amount of detergent that I use. It just feels more accurate than with powder or liquid, even though that’s obviously not based on any actual science.
    Honestly, I think that the thing that really speaks to me about detergent sheets is how easy they are to use. With my disabilities, laundry can be difficult on a bad pain day. Being able to just tear a sheet and toss it on top of my laundry is such a lifesaver for me when I can barely stand up without wanting to cry.
    So for now, I’m definitely sticking with the detergent sheets, and will probably go back to Inso Green if the Tru Earth cause me issues or aren’t better than the IG, as the IG is cheaper and honestly work really well. I have blankets that have never felt so clean before. It even got a huge, bulky dog bed perfectly clean with only 1.5 sheets. I usually have to wash dog beds twice if I go too long without washing them (whoops).
    They’re one of the few things I wash in hot water. Towels are the other.
    Everything else gets washed in cold. For things like underwear, they get some laundry sanitizer and Dirty Labs’ enzyme powder to help break down natural dirts and odors. It’s a bit pricy, but it lasts awhile and works really well.
    I air dry a large portion of my clothes, and everything else typically gets dried on low heat. I do make an exception for towels. They get medium heat in the drier because I hate crinkly, scratchy, hard towels. They’re the only thing that I refuse to air dry.
    The drier is also helpful with my disabilities. Standing can be hard for me on bad days, so just being able to toss everything from the washer and into the drier, set it, and then go lay back down can be the difference between how much morphine I have to take that day, or whether I’m able to make an actual meal or just eat snacks. If I have to stand and walk around to hang everything up (I only do larger loads), that’s going to take a *lot* of my energy and pain tolerance, and it will greatly affect what I’m able to do for the rest of the day. A lot of my everyday choices revolve around my disabilities and chronic pain, so I have to put accessibility above sustainability.

    While I think this is a very well made video and very informative, just wanted to point out that weight is a factor as well. The boxed detergent and sheets will be probably be carried by trucks - but size and weight will change the load and emissions of those trucks. Otherwise, I really apppreciated all the points made. thanks for sharing and referencing the studies

    A real problem for me is that I try to always wash on a cold cycle but some of the dirt and detergent simply won't break down as properly in cold water and leaves residue in the machine (and also the shower, the sinks...). This wil start to smell after a while when there's no hot (and I mean like the 95° Celsius one) cycle every once in a while. So I wonder if it is more sustainable to constantly wash on 40° Celsius and bedsheets on 60° or to usually wash on 30° and every once in a while the 95° for bedsheets and towels. Because this residue can't be good for the lifetime of the washing machine, can it?
    But I hangdry all our laundry, because this also protects the fabric fibres from braking down so fast. I wouldn't even have space for a tumble dryer in our current home😂

    • @asteria4279
      @asteria4279 7 месяцев назад

      Make sure your detergent is designed for cold water washing. If not, it definitely won't work as well and will leave residue. If it IS a cold one, time to switch!! That's a bad brand!😮

    • @Serena-or7sl
      @Serena-or7sl 6 месяцев назад

      Can you try reducing the amount of detergent you use? I had residues in my washing machine, but they went completely away by using less detergent. I wash at 30 with a long cycle.
      Also, clean the filter as soon as the washing machine starts to smell. I found it's the only real thing that makes my washing machine stop smelling if it started smelling musty.

I really was under the impression that the extra costs would benefit the environment but now I am no longer convinced. Big plastic bottles of liquids feel outdated, powder could wear out clothes faster and the plastic cover of pods also do not sit good with me. 😅

    I have sensitive skin & commercial detergents ouch/ burn/ itchy. At the moment I get Zero Co refillable laundry liquid. They have a full ingredient list on website. Plant based. The container is recycled plastic you keep it reuse/ refill it. The recycled pouches get sent back to company for free in mail (Au made, nearly everything in Au is made in china and very far. Big country size of all of Europe combined. That a lot of road / ocean travel for all products including vegetables) they wash and refill the pouches with new detergents. Au has its own issues mainly everything is outsourced to china including food anything in au is resourced long distances. Local is near impossible in most cases. Never use to be like this government sold us out to foreign investment. And nearly everything is plastic not recycled (scam/ abused) or too bloody expensive. I looked at eco detergent sheets the other day for au$58/ 80sheets. 1sheet= small washer machine less than 6kg light load & not all front loaders can handle them. All eco products have the same cost problem. Fine for middle income of $80000/yr not $18000/ yr like me. Anyway… it makes for serious anxiety.

    I LOVE this series!! I want sustainable products that actually work, and while I’m using up my not so sustainable products and slowly trying to transition over and get more sustainable ones when I run out, the search has been hard. There can be a lot of fear-mongering around chemicals, so I’m grateful that we can address this with studies and figure it if it’s good/bad and why. I want to be both science based yet environmentally conscious. I hope this makes sense, cause I care about both.
    @Gittemary Also, I have a video suggestion but also question regarding the use of petroleum / petrolatum jelly. I have been trying to get away from products using it due to the environmental impact, though I’ve found it to be great for my eczema and I’m struggling to find replacements. While researching the topic, I knew it was a derivative of the oil industry, but I saw a toxicologist that specialized in sustainability in skincare products say that normally petroleum jelly is a byproduct of oil and normal a waste product. That we are making use of what would normally be a waste product, and unfortunately the demand and consumption of oil isn’t going away anytime soon, so it’s kind of like an evil neutral. So I’m kind of stuck on this. I don’t want to support the petroleum/oil industry, but if it’s normally a waste product and they’re not stopping production anytime soon, is it okay to use it? I would LOVE a deep dive on this. As we get closer to getting away from fossil fuels, obviously we need to choose a better alternative (which, what would that be?) but with how it is now how should it be approached from an environmentalist perspective? I have a skin condition and I want to both take care of my health AND the environment. I hope it’s not a stupid question, I do need to research this more, but again I would LOVE to find either more research on this and/or an alternative that I could use 🥲
