Gen Z and Gen Alpha are obsessing over Stanley cups - going as far as to camp outside of Target to be the first to get their hands on their latest collection. The Stanley Quencher Tumbler cup has turned into a cult of sorts and it’s the latest chapter in a long saga of TikTok overconsumption and consumerism. In this video, I discuss the obsession with viral products and TikTok’s nonstop consumerism.

I think two is definitely reasonable. I had one water bottle that I left at work so I wouldn't have to carry it back and forth every single day. I also have ADHD, so remembering to bring it everyday (and bring it home everyday) is a pipe dream. I then had one at home. I also have a specific gym/travel water bottle that is very light weight and one that I won't be too upset over it getting scratched up when it's on the pool deck. That one lives in the gym bag so I don't forget it. I also have two travel coffee mugs - one for work and one for home for the same reason.
But yeah, point is, I don't think there's a set number for everyone. However, you should only have what you need. No one needs 5, 10, 20+ cups, especially of the same exact thing thing. I have different cups that serve different needs, and I think that's okay.

I feel like everything has its craze/time. As a Starbucks collector, even though I’ve slowed down quite a bit in the last year and a half, going on two years, people used to go crazy for the studded cups, and when it came to anything Halloween, the lines would be just as long as they are with the Stanley. I noticed a big dip in Starbucks cup collectors, and everyone starting to sell their collections, while getting into the Stanley craze. There’s always some trend whether it’s a Stanley, Starbucks, loungefly, studded cups, pop Funko, beanie babies, Jordan’s etc.. I literally just went to my collection and started clearing out cups that I’ve never used and I just donated 3 to 4 grocery bags to the Goodwill, donated another two grocery bags to my friend who donates to a teacher that hosts an auction that goes directly to her students etc. I normally don’t sell, but just give stuff away and I just want to enjoy the cups that I have and get rid of the ones I don’t.

12:09 I really do think the reason why people are hoarding so much and overconsuming is due to the fact that you cant actually show your personality, how you act in day to day life, small quirks people know about you from day to day interaction. You cant show that online in full.
The only thing you can really show is your items online, even if you record yourself in vlogs or whatever people will never truly know the nuances of you.
So they overcompensate by posting all of their interests and items and use buzzwords like "_______ aesthetic" or "_______ core" or "are you a _______ girl or a _____ girl?" Things like this, and they feel the more you have to categorize yourself, the more you can show.
The more you yearn for the feeling of someone actually knowing "you" to deal with your chronic loneliness.

That quote about the US lack of real community and these viral participatory trends standing in for "community" really hits the nail on the head. This is exactly the problem. Instead of Community, we have "normative group behavior".

Honestly as a 20 year old Gen Z.... i feel like the media trends obsession is solely based on people being insecure with themselves and not having a sense of community.
Im one of the few in my age group that wasnt raised with a phone. So i had my phase at 15 where i had social media but by the time i was 17 i had deleted everything. I never had tiktok for more than a month because i found it mind numbing.
I was raised in a very non traditional way. No social media, no gender norms, no education or job expectations, it was "here are the tools you need for life, and what you do with this information is up to you" and with that i moved out at 17 and have been doing great sense. I feel like many people try to put their children into a box instead of letting them become their own person.
I think all of this is just a result of people not having real life socialization and being raised online. All these trends give people a false sense of community hence why they feel the need to keep up even with how ridiculous a lot of the things are and how they really dont matter.
All of my friends are 30+ because everyday im outside engaging in hobbies. Im the youngest person in any given setting because people my age literally are NOT going outside. And the times you do see them outside theyre literally on their phones not talking to eachother.

This is what I’m trying to do! I’ve noticed social media is a time suck with my ADHD and makes me a poor parent. RUclips might have to go too.
I also used to smoke weed, but don’t anymore due to having been pregnant and found it saved me a ton of $ and I was no longer complacent.
Right now I’m going to school to be an EMT, but once I have more free time I’ll be joining clubs for our hobbies, and getting rid of our wifi + subscriptions.
I also have passes for places gifted to my kids so we can go and do things, rather than have a bunch of stuff. Somehow we still have too many toys and books though lol
I plan to only give my kids those starter phones with a few phone numbers allowed after they start going places by themselves, but I have a long while until then.

I have a Simple Modern version of the Stanley cup. It’s mint colored, has a handle, a straw, and can hold 40 fl oz of water. I got it because I actually like the handle, straw, how much water it can hold, and how it fits in my cup holders in my car. I’m a teacher and an athlete, so drinking a gallon of water a day is a goal of mine. I love my cup and it was $30. I’ve dropped it, it has scratches on the bottom and sides, but it still functions and I don’t care about aesthetics. I just want a functionable cup for my water. My students are OBSESSED with these cups and I just…don’t get it. I remember how students had to have Hydroflasks, and how it’s these…and if you don’t have one, you’re lame. One of my students has the exact same cup I do, but it’s pink, and we got all excited over having the same lol. She told me she is clumsy and does not trust herself to not ruin or drop a ridiculously expensive cup. REAL. $30 for essentially the same thing, just not the brand, is great. The chokehold that trends have on my students and even adults is ridiculous to me and only perpetuates mindless consumerism, brands getting richer off our sheep mentality, and WASTE. I know for a fact these will go out of style like the Hydroflask, and pretty much…you know…every other trend.

It's been going on for years, I did a whole study on subliminal advertising ages ago for a psychology course and it's amazing how much companies play on our emotional responses to get us to buy stuff. I was going to get a Stanley one because it reminded me of an old green Stanley that my grandpa used, so I might still get it but just one.

I'm 53 and to my memory: olive green & regular stainless steel were the only 2 Stanley versions I saw for years.

Girl, this video was fire!! You presented truth in a thought-provoking, non-judgmental way. I find myself being drawn to over-consumption and into trends, so this really helped me to take a step back and think about why I’m doing that and why it’s happening! Thank you so much!

I absolutely love your channel 🥰. I have to admit I am gen x and I have a cup collection. My collection doesn’t just include Stanley’s , although I have 5 of them , it consist of Starbucks tumblers ect . I have cut back on my collection and have gotten rid of cups I don’t like . I remember my friends going crazy over the cabbage patch kid dolls . Everyone had to have them . My sister was bullied because she got a knock off doll because our parents couldn’t afford the real one at the time . I love collecting and making friends that I would never have met before . I have met some amazing people that I would not have met otherwise. I collected back when it wasn’t cool and even camping out for a cup is a sense of community. The upsetting thing is when the cups are resold online . The greed and lust for money has just made me sick, running over people , fighting ect just to resale and make a profit . Like with anything else i.e Rae Dunn , tumblers . Squishmellows , it will pass and the items will end up in thrift shops but the people that love the item and have the item because they love collecting and will keep collecting . I hope you have an amazing week
