  • Today is the release of The Who’s Who’s Next box set. I will not be getting my physical box until Monday, but I did get the iTunes download today, and will be listening to the bonus material throughout the day. Meanwhile, my good friend, ‪@sampopkin‬ , has done “Pure and Easy” on his own channel.
This song kicks off the album, and has become a rock anthem over the last 50 years. Honestly, it’s a good song to describe my experience in high school. I don’t have a synthesizer or a piano, so I decided to come up with my own arrangement. I started off with a cleanish tone on the neck pickup (volume rolled on about 7/12 or 8), then flip to the bridge pickup in flame thrower mode for the remainder of the song. For the extended jam, I don’t have a violin, and don’t like playing harmonica (as Roger Daltrey had done live in concert until about 2019) and guitar at the same time, so I did some random Pete Townshend licks and riffs from various songs notably Superman by The Kinks and Road Runner by Bo Diddley. Hope you like my arrangement!
Seeing as I don’t have a 1959 Gretsch 6120 Nashville (original or reissue), I tried to closer to Pete’s live tone from 1968-1973, which was a Gibson SG Special with P90 pickups and a cranked Hiwatt amplifier, with reverb from the room and slapback tape delay added in the studio while mixing. My chain is my 2021 Gibson SG Special, amp is a Fender ‘68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb while effects are J Rockett Archer IKON overdrive, MXR Carbon Copy and Catalinbread Topanga Spring Reverb (would really love to get my hands on one of their older WIIO pedals to make these Who covers come to life). I’d like to think I did okay.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some listening to do!
