- …and after nearly six months, we’re back with a brand-new collaboration cover!
With the release of the new “Now & Then” single, there has been a resurgence and nostalgia trip for The Beatles’ Anthology documentary and albums. We thought this was as good of a time as any to present one of the highlights from the albums.
Recently, fellow RUclipsr, @Parlogram , said that this song was recorded for Beatles For Sale, but was dropped in favor of “Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby”, which rightfully gave George Harrison a vocal vehicle on the album. I feel there were other covers on the album that this song should’ve replaced, as it contained one of John’s best vocals prior to Help! That showcased his vocal range beautifully. Andrew also did a video on the lost Sessions album from 1985.
I called on my frequent collaborators @sampopkin, @davidmontis7259 and @mendips09, to help with this one. Even though on the original recording, George Martin plays a barroom style piano and Ringo plays a tambourine, they’re so buried on the master we’ve come to know and tolerate, so we nixed those parts. We also tried to give more of a “what if” arrangement had the band played it throughout 1965 at notable concerts such as the NME Poll Winners’ show, Palais des Sports in Paris, Shea Stadium, Atlanta Stadium (the only time they could hear themselves) and the Hollywood Bowl. The song might’ve been mostly good for my range, but I couldn’t hit those high notes John hits towards the end, so I had to stay in my range.
I also do not have a Rickenbacker 325 as I have little patience for them, so I used my trusty Rickenbacker model 1997 Rose Morris reissue. With the biting lead guitar that George played, Sam had little doubt George used his Gretsch Tennessean, so he rightfully used his. Grant has a Hofner Cavern bass in his instrument arsenal, so he used that. David played his trusty Ludwig Ringo kit.
This cover marks a change in how we do collaborations: from this point moving forward, I will be mixing all audio and I’ll also be taking over the video editing for basic four-piece setups such as this one. This is a trial and error for me, so forgive me if it isn’t perfect. We all gotta start somewhere, don’t we?
We had a lot of fun doing this one. Nice to do a nice R&B rocker, and a rare Beatles track. I’d like to do more of these as collaborations in the future. Another might be coming sooner than you think!
