  • The Hyundai i20N has a tricky job in life: it’s the follow-up to Hyundai’s terrific first hot hatch (the family-sized i30N) and it’s got to head into battle against the might of the spectacularly fun Ford Fiesta ST. And even the likes of Renault, Peugeot and Volkswagen have given up trying to knock the king of the small hot hatchbacks off its throne. Hyundai’s trusting that a touchscreen bursting with tech, enough modes and set-up nerdery to last a lifetime and some very zig-zaggy styling will do the job, so now it’s over to Top Gear Magazine's Serious Car Tester, Ollie Kew, to give the i20N a very close inspection.

They're making absolutely fantastic cars now, and the only reason I can think of for them not selling more is people stuck thinking Hyundai means garbage.

Picked mine up Saturday and quickly covered just over 250 miles over the weekend. Completely usable as a normal family hatchbach, with plenty of room in the back for the 3 year old's car seat and all the creature comforts you need (heated seats and steering wheel especially this week!) - plonk it in Eco or Normal mode and it'll easily do 45mpg on my daily commute, but a quick flick to Sport and I can slip into any gap I need to at junctions and roundabouts.
Bose upgrade well worth the £500 - huge volume, decent bass, works with my wide range in music taste (which has covered everything from Led Zeppelin, UFO, Rainbow and ELO, through to Pearl Jam, RATM, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and Pendulum!).
Ride is definitely jittery at lower speeds, and big potholes are definitely best gone around, but as soon as you get over 30/40mph, it starts to settle into its rhythm.

Had my i20 for 2 month , have done 2500km here in Australia. Totally fine to use as daily. Firm suspension is still very liveable. There is little to no body roll when turn in . So the trade off is well worth it . The rev hang is annoying Because you have to delay shift for engine to drop. The clutch is super light very easy to live with. Handling is out of the world. Overall amazing package.

I worked for Hyundai in South Africa in 2013/2014 and was always given an i20 1.4i Glide as a company car,it was o.k to drive but very boring, they then let me have the CRDi model and that thing was a total grin machine and I just knew that with a bit of work that they could make a decent, fun hot hatch...nice to see that that is now a reality...

Car fans nowadays always moan about how boring modern supercars are, but guys, this is where it’s at if you really want to have fun, a compact hot hatchback or a sports car! A supercar is a technology demonstrator and a thrill ride you can operate yourself, but at its heart, it’s an exotic toy. Paying 10 times more doesn’t mean you should have 10 times the fun. The more people pay attention to this kind of compact, affordable sports car, the more people will buy, the more the manufacturers will make, we’ll all be happy. As a side not, I like this guy, him and Jack Rix. Chris’s Harris always walk away with the plaudits, but I’ll happily watch a film made by them two!

Then you feel alot more hp in the top revs. I very much love my little 1.6t now. It's a hoot. never broken down, starts firtst time every time. Only issue is sticking calipers/handbrake due to its over complicated design. (so i'm told). Have an st150 and now an ep3 and need to sell the i30 but it's still on the drive, four months later.

Yeah I know firmer suspension, you feel every lump and bump on the road, like this car I'm fine with it. I use to own a 2014 Suzuki Swift and it has been with me for 5 years, I loved it and it's suspension was also hard. Upon saying all that who knew Hyundai would be like this in 2021, not me. Never liked their older cars, i always thought they were too blend too boring, not anymore, up until their first Gen i10 and then they just took off right there. I tip my hats off to them, congrats Hyundai you have a great car lineup here, keep it up.

@Alle Warten Auf Das Licht not a horrible point, but I had that Fiesta with one kid and still loved it. Once the second kid was here and trying to get friends and snowboards and stuff, it just became impractical. I’m with you though.

@Alle Warten Auf Das Licht I have an ST200 for 5 years now and I LOVE it! but I also don't have any kids.
If you have 2 kids, then practicality goes out the window, especially on 3doors. I don't know about the MK8 ST with 5 doors.
But honestly, going from 4 to 3 cylinders feels like a downgrade to me.
