From Beyond, The Beyond, The Thing, Silent Hill 3, The Blob, Jacob's Ladder, Necronomicon: Book Of The Dead, Slither, Hellraiser: Hellbound, Prince Of Darkness, In The Mouth Of Madness and a lot of Lovecraft/Derleth's work got smushed together in this film. Thought it was pretty good, most complaints around this movie seem to be the lack of character development.

    • @tylerskiss
      @tylerskiss 7 лет назад +4

^yes, yes and YES! (ok, maybe I miss the Slither connection, but still, people keep harping on the Carpenter comparisons "the Thing meets Assault on Precinct 13" but until now I heard no mention of Fulci's obvious influence among others ehat are just as prevalent,
The film seemed to come from a good place (an obvious love of horror cinema, a desire to leave some things a mystery) but I think, in order to make a film about a group of trapped characters, you needed to get to know and at least care about some of them.

In a very strange way I feel like this film is one of the better Lovecraft adaptations without it being directly related to any Lovecraft themed story. It just has that air of mystery and cosmic horror not to mention a kind of faceless cold that you don't really understand their true motivations and even when it's someone explain to you it's still isn't in such a way where you could understand where they're coming from, it's still meant to be very vague and eldritch in nature which I absolutely love about this movie

I thought this film was absolutely amazing. It's a shame that a lot of people are calling it mediocre, when I was generally creeped out through the majority of the film. The characters, the story, the effects, the atmosphere are all superb. At least it's better than the drab shit that Hollywood pumps out each year. Hopefully, this will get people interested in more Lovecraftian horror adaptations.

I particularly liked the Prince of Darkness touch of leaping into the Void as a means of possibly “ending” the...end of the world (at least as all would know it).
And this most likely is the best Lovecraftian Mythos movie since Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy films. The sense of rapid escalation and the character’s inability to grasp/fathom/understand the cosmic implications of what’s even happening really captured the Lovecraft implications of the Great Old Ones finally be drawn into (or back into) the mortal realm. And Poor Kim looks to be the perfect personification of survival leading to future madness that Mr. Lovecraft would have so damned so many of his hopeless/helpless characters to.
Damn good cinema to jangle the nerves. Wastes no time, gets right down to it. And Windom Earl as the bad guy to boot (Thank you, Kenneth Welsh).

This really was like an John Carpenter movie - to me, very reminiscent of Prince of Darkness - and I mean this as the highest compliment. I watched it last night, and a movie hasn't filled me with tension like this one in a LONG time. It gives me hope, since Carpenter has seemed to have retired from directing, that other screen writers and directors have taken his inspiration and making new movies. Thanks again!

finally got a chance to watch the void after Netflix added it to there selection. Wow, great movie. This movie grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go. thanks for letting me know about this movie. This is my favorite kind of movie. Has an event horizon feel which is my personal favorite...next to poltergiest and the original NOelm st......also there was a scene that reminded me of hellraiser part 2 ..at the end when the walls to the other world are closing in on the last surviving guy from both sides...i believe that was a homage to Hellraiser 2.....perfect movie...keep them coming thanks Cecil, you are the man

My wife and I went to see this in theaters after seeing the trailers and pretty much saying "why not"? and we absolutely loved this movie! we're just fans of horror in general and practical effects. I think th next movie in their series is going to be 'The Dunwich Horror' & Then 'The Haunter in The Darkness' to finish off th trilogy. Im thinking Dunwich is going to be next bc Nick Cages daughters name is Levinia, Th mother of Wilbur Whately... And it would make sense to have Nyalarthotep as th Antagonist after Yog-Sothoth.

Strazdas first off, The Void's blu-ray is region free (as somebody has already pointed out). Secondly, if you don't want to watch something for such a frivolous reason as region coding then don't watch it period. Just cause somebody did something that you don't like doesn't give you the right to pirate their content. This whole 'I'm gonna torrent movies and act like I'm somehow better for it' stuff needs to stop.

I personnally really enjoyed it, but it has its glaring faults, the script for one needed some work and the acting was a hit and miss especially from the grandfather. I think people went in thinking it will be a masterpiece akin to the classic Carpenters films when it's not, I wanted a lovecraftian style film and I got it. It's probably going to be on my top 10 films of this year.

A lot of people compare this to The Thing but I think it has more in common with In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness. SPOILERS when the cop pushes the doctor through the portal it instantly reminded me of the moment when the female protagonist (can't remember her name) of Prince of Darkness pushes the Devil/Demon/Whatever through the mirror.

A homage specifically, of Prince of Darkness. Although Prince of Darkness will stay with you longer because it also contains a good dose of science and science fiction as well. Carpenter is a well-read man. Watched this because I read it was Lovecraftian. In that, I think it's as good, or better than Mouth of Madness.

I just watched this and was floored by just how great it was.
I think that not showing things too early, either by choice or necessity, was the perfect call to add some suspense shortly before shit gets really crazy.
Ambiguity is by far what makes this a great cosmic/elditch horror story. We aren't meant to understand, that's literally the point. Us humans are far too insignificant to even remotely comprehend concepts like a literal void, the absolute lack of space, time, matter, conciousness, etc is just too foreign to grasp.

I just wish they did more with the movie. More monsters/better character development would of been great. They nailed the eerie atmosphere though

Awesome flick. If you are in the mood for something different than look no further A real homage fest but I thought it felt more along the lines of a Lucio Fulci or Stewart Gordon movie than one by Carpenter. The practical effects on this one make a single viewing worthwhile even if you don't like the movie.

If Harbinger Down was a tribute to The Thing, I'd say The Void is Prince of Darkness. Now all we need is a modern In the Mouth of Madness.

Does anyone know any other modern movies with cosmic horror as the general theme? Really enjoyed the void. It wasn't PERFECT but it was a nice refresher from all the cliche jump scare demon type flicks.

Just watched "Housewife". Good, but not great. Definitely worth a watch.
It's got a messed up intro, then a bit of a slow burn... then it really starts to do some brain bending shit... then it starts to ramp up very quickly into an all out insane final act where shit gets REALLY fucked up and weird...

I love this movie. Its like the thing met silent hill. Plus im a fan of any horror movie that doesnt spend 30 minutes on character development and gets the ball rolling in under 15.

Loooved this movie; Mostly great performances, beautiful effects, amazing camera work, and intriguing high-concept premise executed very well. Would watch again, would recommend! My only complaints regarded the third act. The main villain seemed like just an annoying narrator rather than an imposing threat that would force characters into making tough decisions. He had many opportunities to give them incentive, but instead he just... made them think about/see stuff they didn't like and moved on? I found this very unfitting for an omnipotent threat, as if an OP villain wasn't bad enough. And then, of course, that god damn ending (concerning the sheriff's fate). Total cop out, bland, and empty; not explaining the mechanics of the magics presented in the film, or any of the void's lore added mystery and suspense, sure. However, you can't end a story by introducing an entirely new world of it without even attempting to familiarize the audience with its most basic concepts. Luckily, these two issues really only spawned during the third act, so I can still say I enjoyed most of the movie. If the ending or villian's motive is what defines a movie for you, by no means should you ever watch this movie. If you want to appreciate some great visuals and amazing practical effects, go ahead! Or just watch the trailer.

    It's an awesome horror movie!
It's a mix between movies like,
"The Thing" , "Hellraiser" and "Event Horizon".
It is like an LSD Trip full of gore and gutts.
    It feels indeed like a
    John Carpenter- movie.
It's a masterpiece of the bodyhorror genre!
    I am impressed.

The film has no theme and when that happens everything loses its direction. There were so many great ideas but go nowhere and have no meaning or reason beyond 'this looks cool'. Which is disappointing because i wanted to love it. The ending was also a real slap to the face.

It was ambitious and had some interesting ideas and visuals, but ultimately it fell flat. By the last act I began losing interest fast. I understand the love of practical effects, but those movies that the filmmakers loved didn't have to rely solely on FX to deliver a good film. I was really looking forward to The Void.
Carpenter's Prince of Darkness did not even have half the amount of FX as The Void, yet the film successfully develops a sense of dread. While we all are tired of watered-down PG-13 Hollywood horror films, independent horror films are subject to some of the same mistakes regarding storytelling, characters, and atmosphere.
We're currently going through a phase where so many horror films (especially independents) want to reference the '70's and '80's and the cult classics of those eras without actually considering the elements that made those films enjoyable. Yes your film poster design is retro, you clearly want to remind us of splatter gore and VHS. Yet by these enforcing those references you're asking us to place your films beside those past classics, and they come up short in comparison.
