- Hey guys, what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be diving into The Void, the 2016 horror film directed by Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski.
Starring Aaron Poole, Kenneth Welsh, Daniel Fathers, Kathleen Munroe, and Ellen Wong, The Void is a chilling, atmospheric journey into the realm of cosmic horror.
The story revolves around a small group in a hospital that find themself caught in a nightmarish situation. As the characters grapple with personal demons and unravelling relationships, they quickly realize that they are trapped and surrounded by a mysterious cult and interdimensional creatures that defy explanation.
At the heart of The Void lies an engaging, suspenseful story that explores the limits of human understanding and the terrifying unknown that lurks beyond our comprehension.
In this video, I’ll do my best to decipher the unfathomable, exploring the story, characters, the overarching cosmic entity, in addition to the ending.

This is the hidden gem of all hidden gems... It's an absolutely phenomenal movie.
There is a tinnny bit of corny writing and a couple weird performances, but otherwise it's a ton of fun. I've seen it a handful of times over a few years
One of the few movies that really got that Lovecraft spirit especially the ending
Yeah that ending is insane
@@brianstanton2721 yeah I think the main problem with most movies trying to show Lovecraft themes is that they always fail at explaining what’s happening. Another movie that’s very good Lovecraft content is The Lighthouse
@@gggallin8279 ya heard that movies awesome as hell I need to watch it. I heard it ties into Annihilation as well, could be wrong tho, but that would make perfect sense and it would be cool af
I’m glad they went with practical effects because goddamn the creature designs are just perfectly grotesque.
I thought it was fairly Lowe budget but the SFX are as good as any. Everything seems like it does have a high production value
I bet it was still inexpensive, but they got the most of every dollar.
Unfortunately..... Hollywood doesn't promote films like this anymore. So I only heard about this a few years ago
So glad to see this movie covered. Eldritch horror is my favorite type of horror and this movie is a love letter to it
Eldritch is the best kind of horror
Evena bad movie can be made interesting with a bit of eldritch thrown in.
What are some of your favorites? I've been looking for some and can't find any good ones.
@@LastNameTom im probably gonna spell it wrong but synchronic ,the endless, event horizon(kinda xD) ill try to think of more
@@LastNameTom color out of space, event horizon, in the mouth of madness, call of Cthulhu
It blows my mind that this movie is so unknown. It’s a masterpiece of cosmic horror with amazing practical effects.
In The Mouth Of Madness is the best Lovecraft horror film.
@@anubusx Accurate as hell, incredible movie
Marshal?
You are one of the last few remnants of a great bygone era on RUclips
It's not unknown, it's not a masterpiece, and the effects are just okay at best

Caught this film with my roommate one night, wasn't sure what I was watching at first but this movie was amazing. Great horror film heavily influenced by gothic horror. A true gem!
It really is David!
For me it's bullshit. she just made me laugh.
The Void is the best Lovecraftian horror film since John Carpenter's Apocalypse trilogy
It's also a very unpredictable film
I gotta check it out!!
My sister is in this movie! It’s so cool to see you review it!
That’s so cool! Who does she play?
What's her @?
I clapped her cheeks
Which one is your sister?
As a Lovecraft fan this is one of the few movies I would say captures the essence of cosmic horror. The pyramid floating in the sky before our protagonists was truly nihilistic and terrifying at the same time. Thanks for a brilliant overview.
I love The Void (2016). It's the best horror movie since The Thing (1982).
Thank You right like the thing itches that scritch you didn't know you had in one spot but then this comes along after the thing 2011 this movie itches that scritch all around amazing wish they'd make another exploring the Void
Yeah I agree with both of you! I didn't even know about the void I saw a video on it and I stopped everything I was doing and watched it and loved it, it was glorious in it's no holds barred no punches pulled vision of unknowable unavoidable horrific chaos! And I love that if you look hard enough it connects to the likes of hellraiser and even event horizon which if you haven't seen that watch it it's great. But the connections are just too awesome so I'm going with its Canon haha
Yup.😱
I cannot agree more I love this movie.
@@erickhart8046 yeah agreed and it's not for everyone I mean no movie/book is, but for people like us that are fans of this sort of thing it is gold, and like I said I went from not knowing about it to putting it on the list of my favorite movies of all time all in like a few hours span haha
The "Nyarlathotep" artwork at 15:43 has always been a personal favorite bit of Lovecraftian artwork for me... I forget the name of the artist who created it, but it's a really neat take on the Outer god. Most depictions of the Crawling Chaos are overwhelmingly drab with heavy use of blacks and greys, but I love how they flipped that concept on its head and went with a more radiantly colorful approach with all of the purple/violet, magenta, and orange/yellow. I've just always adored that piece...
Kind of like how The Color Out of Space is depicted as a magenta-like color.
Yeah I mean it's a really cool take like it's unimaginable some lovcraftian cosmetic God could be terrifying, but beautiful and awe inspiring at the same time like if it's so above our head attempting to comprehend it turns one to madness than there is no limit to how it could look and the interpretations artistically that can be taken
No, it's cringe
eldritch horror is so hard to get right on screen but i really think they nailed it for the most part, absolutely worth watching for anyone who likes lovecraftian stories.
RIP, Kenneth Welsh, Dr. Richard Powell 1942-2022.
That's a criminally underrated gem of lovecraftian movie.
Aaron Poole absolutely ruled in this one. His segment of THE EMPTY MAN was my favorite by far. Dude needs way more work!
Totally agreed!
Hey! It's that person who I occasionally see on Dapper Dino's videos.
@@bn444 ahhh! Hello fellow citizen with good film taste!
@@Vishanti Either watching someone cover cosmic horror or someone covering the worst of religions. Either one is bound to have a crazy cult be involved eventually.
The Empty Man sucked except for the very beginning. Very disappointing
I interpreted it as Nyarlathotep in it's Black Pharaoh avatar. This would correlate with the pyramid, and the toying with people's fears, longings and singularity of time. Really enjoyed this analysis of such a great horror film
I thought so too, it seems he got those two mixed up
Mind control would be more in the alley of Yog Sothoth which also resides in a dimension outside our own. Don't think that mutations would really suit it though. The key and the gate.
The Void was one of the best films I have seen in a while. So good I went out of my way to buy it. There's even some people who have formed pretty believable theories that link The Void with Twin Peaks.
I found this movie randomly one night on a streaming service and thought it looked like a cool action movie (I don’t like anything horror based) I couldn’t stop watching. Something about the cosmic horror really just made me so interested even scared I couldn’t look away.
We don't have enough good cosmic horrors like this fantastic film.
Such an underrated film. Shame that very few people ever react to The Void. I also love the musical score here as well.
Would love to see you cover Apostle, a folk period style of supernatural horror/thriller film from 2018.
Haven’t seen that yet! Will add it to the list :)
@@filmcomicsexplained I think you might enjoy it mate. If I had to describe it, it kind of reminded me of The Ritual a bit.
@@rodgill9376 shit, I fucking love The Ritual. Definitely checking it out!
this film is a hidden gem! thanks for bringing some exposure to this cosmic horror banger
My pleasure Thomas! Thanks for joining us :)
I really love this film for the type of horror it is. It's not super flashy, it doesn't explain absolutely everything. It's good and so many people don't know it exists still.
You’re finally covering this master piece yessss!
I love this movie so much! Cosmic horror is so difficult to bring to life on film and I think they did an amazing job with it.
Thanks Niyat! Another outstanding synopsis of a movie I haven't seen yet, but will now check out because of your excellent in-depth analysis, as I've come to expect from you. Great Job!
The Void is one of the many great Cosmic Horror movie.. it's so hopelessly dark and like the name suggests void and the affects and designs of the monsters are way above my expectations, wish it got more recognition it truly deserves
Omg one of my fav cosmic horror movies ever!! Event Horizon levels for me!
I backed the crowdfund for this movie! So pleased to have helped make it happen.
One of my favorite horror films of recent times. Beyond the purely cosmetic discussion you cover in the video, the film is also engaging due to it's deeper theme of grief and loss. The emotional & physical loss of a spouse, a child, a parent. All eliciting responses running from selfish relief to outright insanity. Thanks for covering this gem of a film.
I was obsessed with this movie when this came out. I’m surprised this hasn’t been covered already.
This was one of the coolest frickin' things I have ever seen! Coming from a massive fan of Lovecraft, (and of Warhammer 40k., and Bloodborne as a result), I have never even heard of this movie before! Is Azathoth the one who, if he ever wakes up, everybody is SCREWED, and even Cthulhu is afraid of! The Void is DEFINITELY one of those movies that could fit as a "prequel" to Warhammer 40k., like Event Horizon! DAMN, I have to find this movie somewhere now!
I think the idea of the creatures in the basement is that they're the failed experiments of Powell in his attempts to use the power of the Void in an attempt to gain immortality
Yesss!! I’ve been wanting you to cover this one!
Thank you FCE! Hope you’re having a good day 😊
I love this channel so much! I've been following your channel from the start and I just love it so much! One of the most entertaining channels on RUclips! Keep up the amazing work and thanks for the great content!
Amazing, fascinating, and horrifying. I've read about half of Lovecraft's works and can see all the elements involved. I enjoy your reviews of the films that you do. This one seemed different, it was a big project and a lot to unpack. You did a wonderful job. I may not want to see the film, but I am grateful for making it understandable and comprehensible.
This was my random midnight pick to watch and I loved every moment of it
I watched this on Showtime a year after its theatrical release and it's a pretty impressive, if not, insane Body Horror Thriller film. I even watched it on TUBI 3 years ago, and it's still pretty good.
Yes. I was waiting for you to do this gem. Absolutely underrated gem.
I adore movies like this that I just randomly stumbled on during a sci fi binge and it turned out to be really good.
Another horror explained channel introduced me to this film a couple years ago. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but it looks like it may be one of those gems found among a sea of scary films. A lot of cool concepts and sick practical effects.
You mentioned sound design but not specifically the baby-creature. It sounded like a human baby but it also sounded like an interdimensional monstrosity. They wove the two together disturbingly well.
Check out the baby from resident evil 8
Seeing Carter and Alison in that eldritch realm gives me chills. They were desperate to stop the ritual only to end up in a place far too unknown to them.
"Like a top G.."🤣🤣🤣 . Love your video breakdowns and reviews my man!
Finally after all these years I remember recommending this movie glad to see you cover it.
Loved this! Happened to see it on late night cable TV. Hadn't heard of it. Was drawn in and freaked out by as it unfolded. One of my faves.
YES bro!
I absolutely LOOOOVE this movie so much!
Thank you for bringing it to the attention of so people who havent seen it!
Absolute legend.
If anyone wants to watch this movie, its on RUclips. This is my favorite horror film of all time! These guys were able to do this with a very small budget and it almost never happened. I'd love to see this movie with a larger budget and all the same actors! Glad you're finally covering this one.
I literally just finished watching this movie. Great timing!
Right before bed?! Let's go! Perfect upload time.
An amazing video about a movie I love. Keep up that great work!
Recommend this movie every chance I get. The practical effects are top notch, and the story happens to be great, as well.
Great film, glad to see you covering it 😊
Absolutely loved this film the first time I saw it. Well done!
I stumbled upon this during a horror binge on Amazon Prime. It was instantly one of my favorite movies of all time.
The void really gives you an opportunity to grasp the inconceivable
Finally! This movie left me with so many questions. I didn't expect it to be like an Event Horizon, type of movie. I was pleasantly surprised.
Been waiting for this review.
Let’s go!
Brilliant film. I can't believe it is classed as low budget. The effects are amazing. The whole film is great.
This movie is so slept on. Great vid!
Just finished watching this for my current horror binge, very epic, nice twist and turns. Also, had to make a double take when you said Aaron Poole, thought you meant Arron Paul lol. He does sorta look like an alternate reality of him.
This movie is up there with The Wailing and The Autopsy of Jane Doe in my book. I just love movies that oftentimes don't give a "happy ending" and leave the viewer pondering what it all means. Sidenote: I haven't seen Midsommar or Hereditary yet which is why I haven't mentioned them.
Great video as always.
I remember deciding to watch this with a few alcoholic beverages in me a few years ago when it was on netflix, was a really enjoyable but trippy cosmic horror flick. nice to see you discussing it
Still one of my favorite movies of all time, shame they never made a sequel.
The practical effects reminds me of John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and the cosmic horror of "Event Horizon". Fantastic.. Thanks Nyat!
Guess I'll be adding this to my watchlist
We need more fabulous Lovecraftian cosmic horror like this!!!
This is the only movie I have ever purchased from RUclips when it came out years ago. I will watch it again after watching this. Money well spent.
Yooo the into goes hard af! ❤❤❤
STUUUURT. I always forget he was in this. So underrated.
Fantastic video mate 👌
The ending song you got is so fly bro!!
The first time I ran into this movie, I was totally unprepared! Everything about this movie is entirely next level. From a a relatively unknown cast and stunning practical effects it's almost like when I first saw The Thing. Always amazes me how some silly CGI gory type films get so popular when stuff like this gets overlooked.
This movie is almost too damned good. So glad you covered it!
This movie was awesome thanks for covering it😎👍
Watched this a while ago but was pleasently surprised by how good and eerie it was
“Like a Top G” haha, love it!
I literally watched this film today and your video appeared before me. Looks like my steps are being traced by Nyet😂😂
I’m really enjoying getting into cosmic horror with all its concepts but body horror stuff like Melt Movies and all that absolutely freak me the hell out. So I appreciate videos like this so I can kinda ease into seeing a movie and not loose sleep over creature designs 👍
I really appreciate it. I think the hybrid newborn thing in Alien Resurrection scarred me when I was way to young to see it haha
I found this movie by accident one night and it quickly became one of my favorites.
Absolutely brilliant film, I really thought it was a throw back to the things animatronics with the amazing creature effects
Awesome like always.
A great little movie. I'd love to see what this person does next!
My favorite personal interpretation for eldritch entities being all tentacles/gorey/etc is that from their original realm they don't have a kind of physical form, but upon being summoned they are forcefully given one that is struggling to adapt to its noneuclidean form. An analogy would be like trying to force a word document into a different format, and thus getting a corrupted file
As for the mind effects, I had always seen it as the presence of the human psyche being reflected back onto the environment/themselves, the eldritch entity not *intentionally* creating fear and illusion onto subjects, but rather a human conscience within its vicinity becomes as warped as much as it warps time, space, and living organisms.
Very detailed, thank you.
Been waiting
I love this movie...thanks for diving into it!
I remember just choosing a random movie(this one) to watch as I ate. Oh boy, i forgot to eat at times because it had me hooked!
I watched this once in the movie theater near the place I used to live. It was really great.
"Like a Top G"? I LOVE this channel. ❤
One of the best of the decade imo
The Void was an excellent and beautifully executed Lovecraftian and body horror film in recent cinema history.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🖤 That reminds the audience of fearing the unknown and beyond human understanding. This also reminds me of those good old Lovecraftian films back in the 80s. Like the Reanimator.💀
A wonderful descent into the depths of Lovecraft's genius. "The Void" ´, being one the four films forming the Renaissance of Horror in the years 2014 to 2016 (after horror died years ago), is a timeless gem.
Would you kindly write the names of the other three. Just watched The Void. It's spectacular.
@@HassanZaheer02 Of course. The four films showed the different kinds of Horror. Since The Void was a bit of gory :), the others are The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Babadook and It Follows. Have chills, man.
@@uriadelavaro3956 Thank you soooooo much. Jane Doe was truly bone chilling. Yet to see the rest.
Could you do a video on the 2009 movie _Knowing_ starring Nicolas Cage?? 🙏🙏
Yeah for sure! I actually rewatched that last week :)
Oh yeah man, this is one of the best of this style horror out there.
This was a fun watch, i do like how not everything is explain or show, less is more and you need to let people speculate.
Criminally underestimated as a film. I love this one so much
How About Explaining About Tyranids (Warhammer 40k)
Sounds like a good plan!
Im surprised it didnt already happen
Well done!
The being looks like a tribute to hellraiser, and I love it!
