Yes. YES! This is a thing that can end your existence or break your mind. A snarky comment is not appropriate at this moment. Very few productions recently explore the absolute finality of an existential threat. That's what I want to see. The extremes of human experience and behavior. We want to feel what they feel, to explore what we might never experience. Are we obsessed with ourselves? Unbelievably. Us that a bad thing? The extreme opposite. ❤

I think it's a great representation of the craziness that Norse mythology offers with its monsters and especially Loki's children. It is somehow unimaginable but after you see it, it makes sense in a way. It's terrifying as something we don't understand but at the same time recognizable.

The most often used runes here are Othala (the one that looks like a moon lander) and Algiz (the one that looks like an arm with a three-fingered hand). Othala means "heritage" or "the piece of land inherited from the ancestors". It represents the letter O. Algiz means "elk" in older rune alphabets, but has a side meaning as "help" (= the "outstretched hand" symbolises protection). It's not 100% clear what letter it represents, but all the rune books I used stated it was Z. This makes sense in context: Othala tells the hikers, that they've entered Moder's inherited homeland. Algiz refers to Moder's deer-like appearance with the outstretched human hands, and could also be used for protection by the worshippers. But there's a second interesting reference: The shot at 5:04 shows Algiz in the middle and Othala on the right. If you translate them, this is Z (Algiz) as the last letter of the Latin alphabet and Omega (Othala) as the last letter of the Greek alphabet. This shot says, that things have come to an end for the characters: Three of them will die and one won't return home. In reverse, if you went by the rules of Stargate, Othala would be the chevron, that symbolises your starting point - the home planet. But here I'm pretty sure it represents Moder's homeland.
@@grizzly_8917 Marvel is so separate that its barely even related anymore. Just names of Gods slapped onto character’s that look and act nothing like their Mythical counterparts.
The first Rune is Othala it means possession, wisdom, talent, heritage, ancestry, experience, and homecoming. This could mean Moder now owns them or they're coming home.

The set where they film where the department stores got mixed with the forest… Amazing!!!
It’s been years already since I first watched this masterpiece. Today, I thought of it randomly, and looked up a nice, thorough breakdown of it - instead of an inevitable rewatch - this is a great video. 👍🏼👍🏼
When it first came out I was slowly coming around to one of its more subtle messages: it's not easy to keep friend groups when you're in your early to mid 30s.
This is such a rough movie. I can't get over the toxic friendship and toughness themes. He wouldn't have saved Robert. He would've just died. Acting like he refused to save him from a fire or something is absurd.
Also, I think it's what sets him apart from his friends. He's faced a situation where he had to do nothing because to do anything would just lead to him getting killed too. All his friends are just "OH I WOULDA" about it, when "they woulda" just been killed too.
I love this movie. Not only is the monster design incredible but the inclusion of very old mythology is fascinating. We think of Norse mythology as just stories in books. For thousands of years people lived in those old northern forests and the myths were very real to them. Trolls hiding in the rocks. Trickster spirits. The thought of it being real with an old village paused in time from the old pagan days was so cool.
The book was far creepier. Especially the cult consisting of wild teenagers on the run from the law. The creature was also much faster, almost like a shadow as it moved about the trees.
@braedyt Thanks, fam! If you also have read the other book by the same author called "Last Days", theres a brief mentions of the same band the teenagers looked up to.
@braedyt That's more normal than you think, my guy. I've got a back log of 20 books I need to nail down. I'm also working on my novel but it isn't finished yet.
I always found this design SO freaking cool. I live part time in the Kentucky Appalachian mountains, my great great grandma has a cabin up in the deep parts of the woods, we were ALWAYS warned from wandering after dark, you never know what could be lurking and I do NOT need to find some Eldritch horror like this 💀😂
There is another Netflix movie made by the same people that involves an ancient Mayan god that is equally as terrifying. There is actually an easter egg in that movie that mentions this movie's events. There is a scene with a news report in the background that mentions missing hikers in Sweden. Under the radar cinematic universe.
I love the creature design, so ominous and unique. Especially the arm antlers, I hope that there’s more movies with such interesting designs. Love your videos so I’m quite excited to finish the rest of this :)
What i really like about that movie is that you dont see the creature before the end, it's a really great idea, if you want something to be scary, dont show it till you have to. Human imagination is powerful
I really enjoyed this movie. Having read the novel I was surprised at how loyal to novel the movie was able to stay with quite a large amount of differences. It still FEELS the same, despite the changes and shifting focus.
This is definitely my favourite horror movie, and it's mainly because the horror elements are not the focus, but a way to deeply understand the real horror, the trauma of the protagonist. I love how his inner hell seeps into the forest more and more, and I love that he has to embrace, to become stronger for it to save himself. Being able to save others is an amazing thing, but against insurmountable odds, against a world that seems to want you to either submit or die, finding a way to live and survive on your own is plenty heroic.
Cool! Haven't seen your videos in a while! I highly recommend you do a video on the 1975 dystopian action thriller ROLLER BALL starring the late James Caan and Sir John Houseman.
I just love how people still talking about this movie tbh, nordic myth as horror concept always fascinated me and add unique elements to the movie, love it
I never thought that I'd say Netflix made my favorite horror movie, but this is it. I've also read the book, and normally I never like the movie adaptation better, but in this case I prefer the movie. The setting, the build up of dread, the fact that the characters are believable, and then the creature reveal and design are an amalgamation of what makes a fantastic horror movie.
I think my favorite part in this movie (besides the one in the thumbnail), is the cabin. It's just so errie, and the effigy just tops it off. Just top notch horror imo.
Honestly, I hope we see More Norse, Slavic and Celtic themed Horror movies. We’ve all seen Demons, we’ve all seen Satan and they just aren’t Scary anymore, show us more Jotun, show us Faeries and Baba Yaga. These Ancient faiths all had their evil spirits, lets make them have the spotlight again.👏🏻
Yeah this is an amazing, horrifying movie, just overflowing with atmosphere and feeling. Spall and the rest of the awesome actors just nail the vibe, hopeless and frustrated and powerless at times. I used to love Blair Witch Project, and this movie embodies some of the best horror aspects of that movie-being lost in wilderness and at the mercy of other-worldly powers. Thank you for the excellent breakdown on this, cheers!
The film does a really good job of creating its Swedish forest setting convincingly. All the way from its filming location in the forests of Romania :)))))
I love this movie so much!! Modor is absolute perfection. 10/10, would worship. The seamless blending of Luke's flashbacks with present reality was so well done too, I was mesmerized. It really did a good job of portraying the torment of survivor's guilt, and how, just like the first time, even though there was nothing Luke could have done to save anyone, or defeat the enemy... he'll forever be changed, and scarred, and damaged by what happened. But he knows this now. That's why he roars back. It finally hit him that his survival is a triumph. In that little liquor shop, he's no coward, he fully intends to help, but he realizes the futility, and instinct paralyzes him. It was a pitiful, hopeless situation from the start, and the best he could do was make it out alive. It's a bittersweet triumph, but it's better than being mired in "it should've been me" or an endless number of "if only"s. Anyway, Modor is a MILF who can turn me into a weird goat mummy thing any time she likes 🤤
I was left looking like a right bell-end when I recommend this to my lot only for them to say they thought it was boring. I stand by it though. Definitely in my top 10 of horrors.
I love love loved this movie and loved the creature design and loved the minimal use of it. Great example of good design and good minimal use to leave my imagination to do the work. ❤
The reason moder couldnt leave the forest i think is cause of either the runes that kept her there or the forest itself keeps moder there cause it can't go where moder has no control of , it controls the forest therefore it bound to the forest, just my best guess
I was thinking of a better end for Phil rather than just dying like the others. I figured since he was found praying in his nightmare it would have been cool if he was captured along with Luke and Dom but instead of fighting he just completely gave in and became a worshipper and tried to convince Luke and Dom to worship as well in a sort of hysterical kind of way. A sort of we'll never get away so we have to do this kind of thing. Then when Moder comes to the village instead of picking up the woman he picks up Phil and that's what gives Luke the reason to shoot at it. Otherwise I wasn't really expecting much from this movie because of the mostly unknown actors and director (at least to me) and never having heard of the movie, and looking at the rating. Since this channel made a video on the creature I thought, hey, I'm interested in mythological creatures and psychological horror so I'll give it a watch. There are definitely some parts I would do differently (as I already wrote) but seeing it's based on a book and the director took some liberties himself I feel like overall it made sense and the characters were believable so I was happy they didn't do most of the normal horror tropes that are extremely dumb and cringey. Also the creature design was definitely unique and creepy and it didn't look lame which they usually do in lower budget movies like this. Thanks for making this video! Otherwise I most likely would've never known about this movie.
This was such like a movie that just flew under the radar. Like if I mentioned this to anyone, they've never heard of it ever or they saw the title on Netflix.
The fact that his reaction wasn’t a snippy joke or response, but a primal yell was such a great way to finish it

I've also read the book, and normally I never like the movie adaptation better, but in this case I prefer the movie. The setting, the build up of dread, the fact that the characters are believable, and then the creature reveal and design are an amalgamation of what makes a fantastic horror movie.
I remember when the dude gave grandma that one hitter quitter...I was on the floor DYING. Shit came outta nowhere 😂😂😂😂
Might I suggest covering The Greys from the movie Dark Skies, would love to hear you covering the movie as well as your thoughts on the subject.
Adding it to the list Elian! thanks :)
Thats a really good underrated film!
I find the aliens from Fourth Kind very interesting and disturbing
I'm not a horror fan, but I really enjoy these movie analyses. Great vid 👍🏼
Glad you like them! :)
Show us LOVECRAFTIAN!!!!
The Witcher series is based in eastern European folklore
Yeah this is an amazing, horrifying movie, just overflowing with atmosphere and feeling. Spall and the rest of the awesome actors just nail the vibe, hopeless and frustrated and powerless at times. I used to love Blair Witch Project, and this movie embodies some of the best horror aspects of that movie-being lost in wilderness and at the mercy of other-worldly powers. Thank you for the excellent breakdown on this, cheers!
Ive read the book, youve done a great job lf explaining the differences in the book and movie. Love your channel.
Definitely a great surprise when this popped on my notifications.
when Moder sat in that position @ 20:20 it very much reminded me of Totem Poles. Something about that image really hit me
Wow so much work went into this video! Great job!
This Seems Like A Really Cool Survival Horror Flick. I Like Luke's Battle Cry Of Victory & Survival. Awesome Video!
The film does a really good job of creating its Swedish forest setting convincingly. All the way from its filming location in the forests of Romania :)))))
You should cover the film “no one gets out alive” its a “sister film” since its based on a book by the same author of “The Ritual”
I really like the lore of this creature. It’s so creepy 🥰
Luke did right thing in store. Good work on the video.
Bro…
Rule 1: DO NOT go into the forests of the “Old Country”
Or just in general.
Shit is haunted no matter what country your in.
I go camping in Norway often 😅

Good for you bud. I'm not as brave.
Moder is my fav creature. My hubby printed a model for me ❤ The Ritual is a great movie 😊
I thought the reason luke could get out at the end was because the entity let him because it respected he had overcome his trauma
Plot armor
Thank you for a great in-Depth Video about a Great Movie 😀
This is one of my favorite movies ever. Freaking awesome.
I love this movie and I tell everyone to watch it when i get a chance
I'm so glad they showed it enough but left it in shadow mostly.
Great movie! Freaked me out! Great mythology behind it.
I swear you've made a video on the Ritual before. No complaints though because i love this movie.
*shoots the Creature*
Loki Offspring: *slowly turns its head*
Protagonist's heart: 📈📈📈📈📈📈📈
It was in that moment that he knew he F**ked up lol
I wish there were more movies like this. Such an ominous setting, a uniquely terrifying monster, and very believable characters.
One of the best scenes is him snuffing the old chick. 😂😂 I didn't see it coming at all.
The last movie I saw with my mother who loved horror. Death comes for us all
I like before i watch because i have NEVER been disappointed ❤
Great movie. I watched this 4 times. It scared the crap out just as the similar film did in 1979, Prophecy.
