Honestly this trilogy ranks up there with Indiana Jones and Back To The Future in terms of being a straight up gift to humanity. The layers of meaning, the character arcs, the overlapping themes, the music, cinematography.... chef's kiss all night long. I think a lot of people have trouble with 2 and 3 because it gets pretty deep into dialogue/story and the writer's deep investment in the characters. • @zara-zq1oi
      @zara-zq1oi 3 месяца назад +1

It’s actually hilarious because there is soooooo much cgi in those movies.
The reason characters like Davy jones look so good is because 1 how little skin is showing. His entire body is covered meaning a lot less work has to go into it!
Due to surface scattering which is what happens when you hold your skin up to light and your skin turns a redish colour. That is something that is really hard to animate! 2 His face is always wet! The wet look is much easier to make realistic. When you look at other cgi creatures of the time like the big black cat thing in avatar, they made its skin somewhat shiny trying to avoid the clay look. But it still looks a bit clay like as it isn’t wet.
3 the dramatic lighting! Most of the time when we see Davey the lighting is very dramatic. Making it easier for artists to play with shadow! Excluding large parts of detail for highlights and shadows!
The thing is if every cgi character is done like this no one will ever push the limits of what can and can’t be done!
More that complaining about cgi itself you should be complaining about studios forcing the death of creativity with their greed.
Regardless you must not have seen dune if you believe this.

I think OP means the last hurrah of older schools of FX still being used along with newer CGI techniques before the utter use of CGI that infests modern blockbuster movies.
Have you seen the BTS on some of the Marvel movies or any big blockbuster? It is just green screens everywhere, mo-cap and green-suit people everywhere, nothing is real, no practical effects, no models...
I think it is more of an accolade to modern actors that they can make the stuff look believeable when they have nothing to act upon...

The problem was that Jack took more of a central role in the story. So much so that, much of the story is about him but it seems like he reluctantly wants to stay on the sidelines for the entirety of 2 and 3. It created a conflict among the fanbase as to Jack's supposed role in the story. Most were in favour of him being more suited for a supporting role. Personally I felt 1 did not use him as much as they could have but 2 for me was the perfect amount. Especially since 2 and 3 were dealing with heavier subjects like love, loss and immortality we needed more Jack to bring a unique twist to the subject matter. 😅

    • @JamesMcKenzie505

I think the more convoluted plot points in 2 and 3 were enough to distract the audience especially as it was marketed as family adventure kind of movie. Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow kind of turned into a bit of a caricature who lacked any substantial character development. The sudden jump in 3 to this intricate and complex Pirate community of Lords and even a King suddenly blew open plot holes and a ‘why was that never mentioned before?’ response type. I still think they’re amazing movies though and not given the justice they deserve.

    • @more-reasons6655

@@JamesMcKenzie505 characters dont always need character development to be good characters, take Steve Rodgers/ Captain America for example. He is stoic and stays true to his morals over 7 movies while the world around him changes
Jack is similar across POTC 2 & 3, the world is getting smaller and pirates are being killed off and prosecuted left, right and centre but Jack stays true to himself and the freedom he promotes as a pirate

This comment is for every viewer!!!
(Part 1) For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with.
Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free.
And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! 😕 The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better.
Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will.
She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3!
As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies.
Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1??
As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die..
Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth.
Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈
    when Will challenging Davy Jones.
Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
(Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot.. Jack sparrow is the master at controlling peoples hearts to get what he wants and out of a situation. He screwed over Will so Jack can save himself… But it worked in his favor for his reunion to meet his father.. William even told Jack you screwed me over but because of you I was reunited with my father after such a long time.. Elizabeth was caught in Jack’s illusion of trusting him to get Will back that had nothing to do with him which was a lie. Will being on Davy Jones ship had everything to do with Jack lol. Jack left on good terms with Elizabeth and William in the first movie. Elizabeth had every right to believe Jack…. It was Jack who took advantage of her feelings to find the chest by telling her if you want to find will you need to find the chest of Davy Jones! But it was an illusion so Jack can get closer to find the chest of Davy Jones to control him. But to also go back and save will after Jack got what he wanted.
If people don’t understand these movies that’s their problem. But I understand every movie! That’s why I rank 2>3>1 ☠️☠️☠️
(Part 3) I’m sorry to break it to you but the curse of the Black Pearl is my least favorite in the trilogy. I rewatch the trilogy every few months. And to me I just don’t find it as deep or as interesting compared to dead man’s chest or at worlds end.
Curse of the Black Pearl is still a well written amazing film. It’s just I’d rather choose having William struggle on trying to save his father from Davy Jones along side using very clever strategy and dialogue during the dice liar game on Davy Jones to get key from him.. VS William in the first movie who just wants to save Elizabeth….
I love darker storytelling and when steaks are becoming higher! Dead man’s chest gave me everything.. Elizabeth was a useful damsel in stress female lead in the first movie. But I would rather choose her character development in the second movie compared to her in the first movie.
Elizabeth pulled a gun on Beckett’s face. She went on her own journey to save William. Who also taught her how to defend herself with swords. And that paid off well at the end of the movie! Her development is miles better in (Dead mens chest) compared to herself in the first movie who just takes the fall for William to protect him from Barbosa.
Jack sparrow’s dialog and clever intelligence grew (MORE) in (dead men’s chest) and (at worlds end) and you cannot convince me otherwise. If people think he became a joke after the first movie that sounds like a (YOU PROBLEM) Jack sparrow is pretty intelligent in the second movie on being a master at manipulation and taking advantage of people around him to get himself out of a situation in order to save his life and possibly everyone else’s. He just knows how to play the game like that….. You can’t trust Jack sparrow on making the right decisions because he’s supposed to be ahead of the game on everyone’s perspective on him. If Jack was easy to follow with answers he wouldn’t be Jack sparrow lol.
Not to mention what’s with this opinion on people saying Jack sparrow was someone you should not mess with?? Jack sparrow literally wants you to mess with him so he can use that to his advantage to pull you in under his string, for you to doubt him in order to rise up above everyone else. You were caught in his illusion the entire time so he can be superior at the end of the situation and screw you over. If Jack sparrow was someone to NOT mess with, just like Davy Jones.. Then you wouldn’t be caught in Jack sparrow’s illusion on being the worst pirate in the world..
No seriously if Jack had the same fear approach as Davy Jones…. Then all you would have to do were to look at Jack sparrow for a few seconds and be so scared of him, Everyone would just run away.. literally what’s the fun in that for Jack Sparrow?! If he was someone to not mess like people claim. Then (WHY) do people keep on assisting 100% on messing with Jack Sparrow?? Please answer that man lol. That literally makes no sense…
You have to mess with Jack sparrow to be caught in his illusion of doubtfulness so he can be the superior person in the situation and also getting out of a dangerous situation. He literally pulls you in as a fool because people were messing with them. Like come on?! 😂

Sorry but for me it is 2>1>3 because 3 just adressed too much in a shorter time. It had to sacrifice a lot on the inventiveness on the first 2 movies. I liked 3 for its grittier plot and character drama but the action sequences were sacrificed for that and that was a vital part of the first 2 movies. The trilogy is still one of the best made films though.😅

One thing I really loved about these movies is that it blurs the lines between the "good guys" and the "bad guys".
Each character is not motivated by "good" or "evil" but rather have their own motivations and goals. You can see this with each alliance that is formed. They agree to an alliance not to help each other out, but because the offer on the table will help each party involved achieve their own goal. The other way an alliance is formed is because someone has leverage over someone else.
No one is really loyal to anyone else. Many characters change their alliances throughout the trilogy. Ironically the only loyal character(Gibbs) constantly gets screwed over.
In the final battle it doesn't really feel like a "good vs evil" battle. It's a lot messier than that. It feels more like two nations have a conflict with each other. Both sides have a reason to take out the other. You are not really sure who is in the right, who is in the wrong, or if that really matters anymore. In a way that makes it feel like a real life conflict.
This is my favorite movie trilogy. I own them on Blu-Ray and they all have uncompressed audio. Sounds incredible!

One thing I've seen in pirate media is the theme of centralized vs decentralized power. Beckett and the navy are a centralized force that tends towards extremes. Either they are too weak and allow pirates to run rampant, or they swing the other direction by ignoring human rights and committing a kind of genocide. Decentralized power tends to be morally gray. The pirates just want freedom. For some, that means exploring the world and achieving their dreams while others like to pillage and plunder. The only time they can agree is when freedom itself is threatened

This trilogy is so underrated. Wish more people could see the original “making of” videos that came with the DVD’s. Specially with 2 & 3. Not sure if they are still available somewhere.
The practical effects with full size ships and the actors trying to withstand all of it. It’s amazing to watch and it shows in the movies. These were expensive movies as well because of them and that’s probably why they still stand the test of time.
Great video essay, I am obviously biased, but great movies!

  • @delix787
    @delix787 2 года назад +16

I believe the main reason why the trilogy gets no respect. Is because we are living in a world where everyone wants every movie to be a masterpiece and every moment has to shine every five seconds. And if there is just ONE SCENE that feels like filler or drags. It’s automatically going to get an F? 😭 I just don’t understand what people want in movies anymore… you can still skip a couple scenes in a movie if you generally just do not care about them. Even if a scene has a purpose and it’s well executed.. if you honestly just don’t care about what is going on, you can skip it and STILL come out saying the movie is still a masterpiece! People believe movies have to deliver literally everything in every moment for it to be a great film. And that’s TOTAL BS LOL. Dead Mens Chest has a very dumb filler island scene with Jack and Will. Yet the movie is still a masterpiece of clever writing. But people claim this whole movie is bad just because of that island scene.. it’s like how picky can you be??
In the (DARK KNIGHT. I honestly dislike The final act for joker, trying to get those people on both of those boats to convince them to blow each other up. I rather have another Batman and joker dual… I just don’t like the boat scene because it’s just boring as hell for me XD. Yet the Dark Knight is still a masterpiece film. :p

Your opinion perfectly aligns with a theory I’ve been working out for myself. Until recently, whenever people asked what my favorite movies are, I totally drew a blank because I worried that I wasn’t remembering all of the greatest films ever made.
But then I thought, maybe my favorite movies aren’t the most well-made movies. Maybe they’re the ones that stick with me the most, and that I would be happiest to watch again and again.
That perspective TOTALLY changed my list of favorite movies. The movies I would list as my favorites now include Coraline, The Prince of Egypt, Aliens, Harry Potter, and the Pirates movies.
Because to me NOW, it’s not about whether they’re the best movies ever made - I don’t think you could argue that any of my choices are _literally_ the best movies ever made.
But they are extremely memorable and extremely re-watchable. And that makes them great to me.

Not only am I impressed by the amount of use such a small channel got for this video and you definitely deserve the views and I do believe you deserve more subscribers too at least upon my first impression, but it's amazing how much you said about three films in such a short amount of time.
Coincidentally I uploaded a review of the first pirates of the Caribbean that same year that he uploaded this video although it was months later in December. I think you did a much better job of explaining things and thinking outside the box.
My one and only criticism and it's constructive is that I personally thought your enthusiasm was a little droning. Kind of sounding like I can tell that you're reading a script, and don't get me wrong sometimes I have a hard time with that myself, but you made some amazing points throughout and everything you said was very well thought out. The only issue was it sounded like a lack of high enthusiasm, at least in my opinion.

The performances from Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Bill Nighy are especially worthy of praise. I think a lot of people underestimate how tough it is to give such wonky performances and how close they're actually getting to stepping over the line and completely destroying any sense of reality or seriousness WITHOUT actually crossing that line (in the initial trilogy, at the very least). If they had dialed it up just a little bit, I honestly believe the whole entire trilogy could just crumble before or eyes, but they maintained it at the perfect level.
But it's not just them who have over-the-top roles, you obbiously have pretty much the whole crew if the Black Pearl, alongside people like Tia Dalma.

I love that there’s not always a clear “good and bad”. I like that the “good” people, Jack, Elizabeth and Will, go behind each others backs, like Elizabeth chaining jack to the pearl so the kraken can kill him, or Jack only helping Will get to Elizabeth because he knew he needed Will to undo the curse.
Also the realism, for example Barbosa not caring about the Singaporean lord killing some dude, because he doesn’t know him, so why should he care? Most Disney films would have (at least I think they would have) turned him into a McGuffin or like would have made the crew care about someone they don’t know.
And also I like that the “villains” for their motivation, Davy was just some poor guy who was in love with someone and then was cursed, and that turned him into what he was before he died. Barbosa is also just a pirate that was cursed, and wants to kill Jack, no real hard feelings. And then he does turn to the “good” side after Jack dies. Norrington was initially just after Elizabeth, then tried to hunt down jack, and then realized that Elizabeth is more important and sacrificed himself.
Everyone is truly just acting in their own best interest, which makes this so fun for me because that makes the movies less predictable in a way. Especially if there’s multiple main characters, since the potential is always there that one of them could die.

To this day the CGI is S tier and it introduced me as a teenager to relatively complex story telling giving it rewatch value. World’s end was slow I will admit to this day and even when I first saw it being a fan boy…. But that last hour was probably the best action scene I have ever seen in a film. When the Dutchman rises back up to Zimmer’s Davy Jones theme… I get goosebumps just typing about it.
Also on the subject of Zimmer - he created the original score during a single night because he was so desperate to be involved with it but was contractually committed to The Last Samurai and so couldn’t be credited to it in the first movie, but was thereafter. To this day I think the best movie theme of all time and I recommend anyone to see it performed live by a full orchestra before they die. It made me cry out of sheer beauty.

We need more like u! Respecting 1-3 and give them the respect they deserve. That in 4 and 5 Jack isn't the same anymore like damn you're speaking out of my soul!😊

As LOTR huge fan the PotC trilogy has a good second place in my heart. Rewatching lotr million times taught me to ask questions, find answers and connect the dots in the story. Rewatching Pirates of the Carribian with that skill was like eating a candy, absolute pleasure of a deep story! Well on the other hand rewatching HP... how do i put it nicely... wasn't a good time 😬😂

I agree with the Curse of the Black Pearl being a masterpiece but I’m not as big of a fan of the other two. I still like them and they’re definitely underrated, but for me they don’t live up to the original. I think that’s because (for me at least) Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End dove too deep too quick into the weirdness where Curse of the Black Pearl was a familiar pirate story with some weirdness, but even the weirdness there felt like something from a traditional pirate story. It’s hard to explain but I hope that makes some semblance of sense.

Thanks for watching! The Curse of the Black Pearl is definitely my favorite as well. It was kind of surreal watching Dead Man's Chest and At World's End because I used to think they were just ok. I still see their faults, but I found them really refreshing because they are so different from the average blockbuster we get today.

I know what you mean. They definitely took inspiration from traditional pirate stories and legends. The flying dutchman, cursed gold, Calypso from Greek Mythology etc.

Dead Mans Chest, uses the Empire Strikes Back model...
    The good guys lose...
    At the end:
Jack is dead (not sure if going to the locker bypasses death, beyond death?),
    the Pearl is gone,
the heart (the whole purpose of this movies' journey) is gone,
the crew has been decimated down to 6-8 people...
It took the whole happy good vibe feeling of the first movie and turned it on it's head...
Yes there is silliness throughout, but the overall feel is a lot heavier...

I don’t understand why people would dislike 2 and 3, where every character is really well developed and everyone is chasing his own goal through the the two movies, and that leads to the final battle in AWE. And for the fact that the informations are thrown at your face at the beginning of AWE, it doesn’t feel forced when you just remember the end of DMC, when Norrington gives the heart to Beckett
Plus 2 and 3 ´s music is just incredible, one of the best Zimmer’s OSTs

3:10 Jack's intellect is beautifully shown in the 'up is down scene'. Lovely scene, when Jack's contemplating the consequences of stabbing the heart and working out how to come back from the locker. And then back to the usual Jack where he starts running like a maniac to rock the ship.
This is followed by my favourite qoute of his when he's speaking to Hector next to the carrcas of the Kraken. Hector "The world used to be a bigger place".. Jack: "The world is still the same. There's just less in it".

Will is my personality, Jack is my brain, Barbossa is my sanity, Davy Jones is my depression, and Cutler Beckett is my inner monologue. That’s how I connect with these characters and I love these movies for that reason.

One downside to the rise of streaming services is that when you bought DVD's you would get the cast and crew commentaries. This DVD had 3 commentary tracks all of them interesting, I wish I could turn them on in services like Netflix to listen to them.

When I was a kid, I was in the Caribbean with my family on a yacht. One day on the horizon we saw a real old school pirate ship flying a real pirate flag. I cannot describe the fear/excitement I felt. We ended up sailing by and seeing a film crew on there. So I guess my family weren’t as scared as I was. Jump forward a bit into the future and I saw Pirates of the Caribbean and actually saw the coast line we passed them on. It dawned on me that was what we had seen that day. One of the coolest moments of my life lol.
