The Cosmic Horror of THE ENDLESS (Lovecraftian Reality Warper, Time Domes + Ending) EXPLAINED

- Hey guys whats happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’re going to be exploring The Endless, the 2017 supernatural horror, written, directed by and starring Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.
In a genre saturated with overtly explicit horror tropes and a dependence on jump scares, "The Endless" is a compelling, complex, and thoughtful exploration of Lovecraftian cosmic horror that manages to intrigue, unsettle, and mystify, in a film that's just as much about the human condition as it is about otherworldly terrors.
The film follows two brothers, Aaron and Justin, who return to the UFO death cult they escaped from a decade earlier, only to find that the group's bizarre beliefs about an unseen entity might hold more truth than they initially thought. As their differing objectives and motivations clash, we see the pair go through a harrowing experience that pushes them to the limit, with a Lovecraftian monster threatening to upend their world.
In this video, we’re going to explore the story, the weird Lovecraftian monster at the crux of the film, in addition to the ending.

Resolution and The Endless are Lovecraftian horror movies done right. It has incomprehensible mysteries our tiny existence can't even understand.
annihilation aswell
Also "The Void" made from Canadians again. I think the same director of this one made it too.
@@NecrontierGoBrrrrI Loved "The Void" and I've been waiting for more like it. Definitely checking this out.
Agreed. Two of the finest, most subtle and nuanced Lovecraftian/cosmic horror films ever made.
Just watched The Void and The Endless earlier. Very stoked to find out Resolution is sort of a prequel to The Endless. Def going to watch that one soon. Also seen Annihilation, another very good movie.
One thing that always made me question the true motivations and limits of the creature is the tug-of-war scene. It seems to enjoy, to some extend, playing with the reidents of its territory, like legitimately playing with them. I feel it has more affectionate views on them, somewhat parental or like a pet owner. That of course doesn't mean that it's incapable of abuse and tyranny - in fact, quite the opposite, some of the worst abuses come at the hands of parents and guardians.
If you watch Resolution the ending shows us that "toying" with humans is literally what it's all about. Everything it does is to encourage humans to entertain it.
A pet owner is probably a better comparison.
Yeah, I like the idea of it having human pets. Because what pet lover doesn't hate the idea of their pets dying? Might as well time loop 'em!
@@MadamFoogiewhen you have control over the very fabric of space what is “your pet dying” to you?
Understanding the entity’s motivations is impossible. the act of Tug of war could be something entirely different to us. If I drop my hotdog on the ground does the ant look up n say thank u god. If I step on an anthill and crush several ants am I the devil. Or the reality is we cannot comprehend its motivations or its indifference.
I grew up less than 30 minutes from where they filmed these. I can’t explain the love I have for the land. I grew up camping in it, hiking in it. To me it’s actual heaven. So seeing it as a background for these films was something special I can’t really relate. And if I’d met the beer cultists in my 20s, oooo I’d’ve signed up so fast. I think these movies sent me down a cosmic horror rabbit hole and I’m still here. These men and their movies are treasures. Thank you so much for this video! These guys deserve all the attention.
whats the other movie sorry i want to know so i can watch these movies
Jesus, Kid!
I love your enthusiasm!
@@TeamxQuadra resolution... and i wish i saw it first before the endless
Love this flick and these directors. So glad you covered it. There's a whole series of movies associated with this universe - very worth checking out.
Yep a trilogy if I'm correct!
@@filmcomicsexplained I can't remember if SPRING is actually a part of the series or just a movie they got green-lit. I do know the most recent release by them is, but I can't remember the name at the moment.
@@angrydrunkengerman2819ohhh now I’m interested! I loved spring. But I need more of the Endless entity
they're also a few reference to The Endless in Synchronic
@@angrydrunkengerman2819 absolutely LOVED "Spring"
I'm a bit "pompous" when it comes to movies, but I'm glad you mentioned it.
It's a palpable film you can find yourself relating to.
This one... not so much. Tbh I felt like I wasted time watching it.
No hate though. I enjoyed the idea. Just not my flavor.
Fantastic movie that I wasn't aware of until I saw this. Thanks a bunch!
Once again he points out a cosmic horror that I've never seen, and once again I've got ammo to horrify my friends. Thanks Niyat!
while i personally didn't find the endless as scary as some for a Lovecraftian horror it seems pretty good and does build the creepy eerie feeling
@@lordsathariel4384 my friends are squeamish, even this will give them nightmares
@@KreauOne of the best slow burn “horrors” of all time. Definitely watch the short film that ties it all together also 💯
This film has been on several Top 10 Lists, from Lovecraft Movies You Never Seen to Best Lovecraft Horror Thriller Films Ever Made.
Its great on a second watch! You pick up so many little nuances and details
I stumbled across this movie a while back and being a fan of Lovecraft, gave it a chance. Yeah, huge fan of it now and tell everyone about it.
Saw this movie a while back. For an indie movie with a small budget the movie did a damn good job.
That guy in the shack forced to live in like 10-second intervals really lived in my head rent-free for a long time. What a cool, horrible idea.
I’d like to see a couple shorts about how the smaller loops came to be
@esppupsnkits4560 There are interviews online with them discussing a TV series set in this universe in the works. Now that they have been directing for Disney/marvel I imagine it got pushed back with Loki season 2 and now they are directing daredevil but that should assist them getting the greenlight for the tv show. I love these guys. The type of thought provoking films they make just vibes on a deep level with me lol
Talking about "The Endless" especially the nature of the being does not work without also talking about "Resolution". The end of Resolution does a pretty good job of explaining what the being wants, imo.
When you finally escape the crazy death cult only to find out they were right 😂
The ties this movie made with Lovecraft almost seems as if they were implying that he has been there before and wrote about it afterwards. That this being or something like it was the inspiration for his stories. This could fit right in the Lovecraft Cuthulu mythos.
I love anyting lovecraftian, and strangely, I didn't know about this. Now I got to go find it and watch it for myself. For someone who hates jump-scares, I love Cosmic horror.
I don't think cosmic horror is known for jump scares. Isn't it more about the unknown and monstrosities beyond our comprehension?
These two films are soooooo underrated! Total hidden gems.
Nicely done! Viewed several other presentations concerning this film, this is top shelf.
Superb encapsulation of one of the finest cosmic horror movies I've ever seen. Great stuff!
so cool to see this movie getting some love. i saw it when it first came out and i was super impressed. the concepts and ideas - and the execution of them with bugger-all budget - are wild and awesome ☻
Love these films, and I would love to see a final film following Micheal and Jennifer's son searching for his parents, but I'm also content with it being two movies. I've seen people say they did escape since the position of who is driving changes at the end.
Great vid, as always!
This movie really was cool! Thanks for another fantastic video!😎👍
bro you absolutely killed this one! Best on RUclips
It should be noted that [spoilers]
at the climax of the Ascension, the creature seemingly consumes the other cult members. Carl described it as something truly horrifying, hence his suicide decision. His suicide seems to be what shortened his loop, since that's the point where he restarts each time.
I think the changing lengths of the various loops is mostly coincidental. I bet the "base" loop is 10 years, and shortens if a "victim" tries to wrest control from the Entity. Maybe the shortest loops just accidentally took place closer to the Ascension. All of the ones with shortened loops were shown somehow taking their own lives.
There were loads of unanswered questions, and I enjoyed how the movie didn't try answering everything. What's the story behind the Red Flower? Why does the oldest loop seemingly only go back 100 years? What keeps the Entity from expanding the Domes to consume entire cities, or even continents? If it has complete control over time and space (such as redirecting someone hiking), how could you escape it? Why does it appear to take the form of crows?
this was a good comment
Good question.
We need more movies like this.
I saw this movie years ago and always wanted someone to try to explain it. Thanks also, great content
Yes!
I heard about thi movie!
I never had a chance to watch it, but i heard it's a pretty good movie.
I always felt the story was implying the entity was trapped as well.
They usually are in cosmic horror. Or not able to actually inhabit our plane of existence.
@@dreworyan5652 but only temporarily. Like Cthulhu is just waiting for the moment the angles align and he wakes up again.
"help me stepbro im stuck in a pocket dimension of endless horror"
My god this movie!! I swear, every night, for like a month, i would just lay in bed trying to go to sleep, and just replaying and analyzing scenes from this flick. It's so good.
Yeah this is one the wildest cosmic horror series! It was compelling
ED: Calling it a monster seems very weird to me but I guess it's the role it plays
I always get excited when you upload, keep up the great work.
I would love to see a video for the banshee chapter. Especially with how it takes on lovecraft horror with conventional horror
Love this channel, always putting me onto LoveCraft movies I haven’t heard about. Watched The Void…damn good for the budget. The smaller movies have a charm about them. I’ll definitely look for this also..
The captions turns Lovecraftian into Love Karate.
Wow! I didn't know about this movie, I'll be looking for it so I can watch it. Thanks, Nyat!
I saw it blind and I really liked the movie. Not knowing anything about it besides "you like Lovecraftian horror. You'll enjoy it" was a good thing. It's obviously kinda low budget, but they make it work.
Holly crap I'm extremely surprised you did this movie. I thought I along with the guy from foundflix saw this movie lol
You should do “They Cloned Tyrone”
We need more movies like this!
I love stories like this, tales that express a chaos that makes all the sense to the unkown thing that is doing it but being not understandable by us, kimd of how we must seem to lower thinking animals. We only know what we know based on our human experince in a universe of Endless ones. I don't need to understand something in order to get it. This film and the other did it right. Him saying there was a monster in the water; that alone is more spooky than anything else they could've done, aside maybe from them showing a murky, sparkling, confusing look at it from a distance underwater and never explaining or showing it again.
Man, H.P. Lovecraft hurts my brain.
That's because his philosophy was 100% spot on. Sometimes it's the NOT knowing, or lack of answers, that's the real horror. Nothing will ever be as bad as the monsters our own brains conjure. Brilliant.
Love their movies, The Endless, Spring, & Synchronic being my favourites.
You have no idea how wierd it feels to see the damn near exact car as mine in a movie ive never seen before. That jeep cherokee is so close to mine its insane.
This is an amazing movie. Really liked it. I skipped all the parts of the prequel so that I don’t get spoilers.
Thanks for the Video 😀
Nice !!!! Watched this with my brother both movies are F up man the guy in the tent omg man loop Over and over and over
I think maybe at first his loop was like a few months, but because he had been there for over 100 years and resented it, he was punished with a shorter loop. 3 seconds over and over again, ever conscious that you are and will always live, but unable to travel beyond 2-3 steps before coming back to the starting point. Perhaps a fate worse than hell, as you technically had done nothing wrong
@@filmcomicsexplained that sucks haha poor man 😂😂ohhh jeeez the horror
With enough budget and creativity from these 2, they could create a cult classic movie!!
I watched this like 3 weeks ago and the weird thing is i feel like i saw it before when it first came out ...idk but i did love it
If the entity wanted the brothers to stay, it would go outside the 'bubble' to get them. At the end, they escape by passing the barrier.
I remember watching both of these. Loved them
Haven’t seen anyone touch on this topic besides Ivan Osokin.
Idk why but I love this movie so much :)
love this movie. i think i might have actually stayed for the 10 year loop, but jebus the short ones... poor bastards
Keep em coming Niyat, another movie you’ve encouraged me to watch 🫶
Nyet there is a movie made for only $7k that may be interesting for you to review. Cosmos (2019). A satisfying science mystery, well written and beautifully filmed.
Okay, adding it to the list!
The memorial is 10 years old and yet it looks like somebody just made it yesterday? That's not suspicious at all
I think the biggest mistake of The Endless was explaining too much about the monster. In Resolution it was very subtle and doled out in very small doses over the course of the movie. The not knowing about the monster made it much more interesting and I regret watching the two movies backwards.
Im in the same loop as you
Same here, started with this one instead of Resolution.
Have you noticed how them escaping created the accident that killed their mother?
What?!, no way
Wait explain, need to hear this
I love this movie! It's one of those movies that's fun to watch again after knowing what is going on xD
Into the unknown
watched it .. i liked the tone - but i have to admit, i was totally lost. Had no idea what was going on .. and was constantly asking my partner for clues (which he found pretty annoying, i assume)
My favourite movie of all time.
15:13 "the man from the 19 hundreds"... every single man in this movie is a man from the 19 hundreds
He prolly meant 19th century 😂
Could you cover Tom Hank's The Circle?
Can you do the Endless from Sandman comics?
Sure!
Gd I love this movie and Resolution too!!
This is a great indie movie I have seen it.
I want to see you explore the TV show invincible
Such a great film! Glad I bought this one. ❤❤
Great movie. Glad I stumbled across it.
More lovcraftian analysis, More lovcraftian analysis, More lovcraftian analysis
For any junkies of their films, was Byron, Jennifer, and Charles from Resolution all stuck in loops?
Almost at a million !
Love you man
That's funny. That quote from Lovecraft. I am NOT a Lovecraft fan. I don't think that constant overuse of words like "hideous", "grotesque", "horrifying", and "eldritch" make a story scary in the least. I'm somehow NOT surprised that Lovecraft mistakenly pronounces "fear" as the oldest and most powerful emotion.
LOVE is the oldest and most powerful emotion. If fear was, we would never have the guts to approach a stranger who we somehow find attractive, and try to become closer to them, eventually ending up in couples that produce MORE people to love.
What's so profound about saying fear is the most powerful emotion, especially from someone who was such an unrepentant racist?
Maybe FEAR was HIS most powerful emotion. Not mine.
You reproduce a lot more effectively with fear and violence than you do with love.
Love being a primary part of marriage is a fairly recent development. Before the mid 1800s, you approached a woman’s father at best or, at worst, you approached her with a weapon and an army and she came with you wether she wanted to or not.
Throughout history thr majority of children were born because a man wanted pleasure and a woman suffered for it
Love this movie!
14:30 - it’s important to highlight that this interpretation of quantum mechanics isn’t proven!
I’m surprised there weren’t more films from them
I liked the endless
R though there would be a Part 2
It technically is the part 2 of the story about the gun nut tweaker. If that was what you were trying to say.
U should review a dark song it's a really interesting horror movie
So good
I came across this movie by accident. I thought it was a mockumentary about cults. I grew up as one of jehovah's witnesses. This movie gave me flashbacks and nightmares 😅
Could you cover Atlantis: The Lost Empire?
I wouldn't mind spending a few decades with Anna.
Can you imagine the slack jawed simpletons that leave rotten tomato reviews, and what they think of this amazing film? I saw "The Endless" first many years ago, and would follow up with "Resolution" a couple months later (Having taken time to think about the previous film). Further proof that low budget film making is far superior to 300 million dollar turds. I am convinced that "Resolution" helped me quit my destructive drinking habits. I still think about both films often.
Please explore The Ancient Enemy from The Phantoms.
can I reccommend you to cover "Dead Rising" from 2006? that game had a really cool lore & story and it's a really great game too :)
Loved these movies.
Loved this movie !
Lovecraftian Horror you say?! I’m game can’t wait to see this
I will gotta track these movies down now.
the creature be like: PRANK EM JOHN
Yeah, it's a very cool movie
Endless > Resolution >>> Synchronic. And I really like Anthony Mackie, as a rule.
Audiences trap characters in time loops to relive the stories over and over again. Borderline lovecraftian in nature, but it’s a commentary on the audience, on us. None of this quantum energy nonsense, c’mon.
If House of leaves was ever made these two should direct it.
Please explore Outlander.
I've noticed that almost none of the interesting films featured on this channel are on Netflix, no wonder they're tanking, smh.
This movie was amazing
Watched this on a first date with a cute girl after I couldn't get Alien to play. It was...an experience.
Anna with the sexy eyes... Is that the same actress from la la land, alien covenant, and the Blair witch project sequel?
Would you believe me if I told you I've seen/experienced something strangely similar?
The being is Azathoth, it was confirmed by the directors
No. The blind idiot god who sits at the center of the universe and created everything? Not a chance. They never said that at all.
