I grew up watching the physical FX movies of the 70's and 80's, so this is right up my street. Low-budget films that don't rely on CGI deserve our support.

Not really. Those all have great storytelling (well, maybe not Silent Hill). The Void truly does not.

Heh. When Mark said if you were a Fangoria reader in the 80's and 90's... Yup. That's me. I'm a sucker for traditional make-up and creature FX especially if it is Lovecraftian. This is SO my thing.

I thought the creature effects and gore were very good, and the general idea was pretty good, but the rest was kind of pants. The DVD cover though, is one of the best I've seen in ages! Absolutely beautiful.

The movie is ok. The physical special effects are ok. The movie borrows from Carpenter, Hellraiser, Lovecraft, body horror. I watched the movie on VOD from the comfort of my home but they are also playing it at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I think maybe viewing it on the big screen would have been more fun but oh well.

I liked it for the Lovecraftian connection but the acting was kinda bad especially the main characters which is a shame. I also feel the end shot would've been much better if there were no 'witnesses'.

It's a fairly bonkers film. The practical effects veer from good to poor. The acting is pretty uneven. The first half of the film worked best for me; once it reaches 'that point' it becomes a bit of a muddled mess.
It borrows heavily from Lovecraft, Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing, In the mouth of madness, Hellraiser etc etc
Definitely worth a watch for any horror fan though.

maybe i watch too many low budget shitty horror movies but Kermode is a little too harsh here, particularly when he talks about the script. The Void didnt have a false moment or any flat or awkward performances/dialogue. It manages to do so much with absolutely nothing as far as budget is concerned and is just as good as any classic 80s horror movie

    • @pyenapple

No he was spot on. This movie is suuuuuper lightweight on plot and character development. The effects were cool but everything else was mediocre at best.

  • @pyenapple

This movie would’ve been great except for mediocre casting on top of the poorly written characters there’s no particular reason to invest any emotions into. The practical effects were cool, sure, but without substantial storytelling or sympathetic characters, it’s nothing but showing off creature stuff. Wasted opportunity

I still love watching kermode and mayo, not for kermode's reviews but the how mayo just seems to hate kermode being in the same room as him. Mayo really gives off a vibe that he just thinks kermode is such a pretentious prick. It's cracks me up.

i just watch this movie and it sucks ,you dont see any transformations and they kept cutting away soon as you want to see something the acting is awful ,meant to be a homage to 80's horror ,you better going off and watchingHP lovecraft" from beyond",they have tried to mix from beyond and hellraiser and got it completley wrong how do you do that,i wanted to see tranformations and messed up stuff you get none of that cut away after cut away just away very disapointing

It's always a shame when a film with a purpose that isn't the story still feels obligated to fill its running time with a narrative. I'd much prefer if it went the Cabin In the Woods route and just had the plot be a vehicle for the special effects instead of bagging it down.
