I loved how McAvoy gave each character their own facial expression. You can immediately tell when he changes to another personality just from their face, before they even start talking. He did a great job here.
Yes! Another person who think Unbreakable is superior to The Sixth Sense.
I'd watch that trilogy, even if they made it now. I always thought it a bit of a shame that we ended the film just as Bruce Willis's character worked out what he was. I was so looking forward to following him on further adventures, and then the credits rolled. I had no idea that it was intended as the first of a trilogy, let's start a petition.
The thinking man superhero movie :)
Yeah, I liked Unbreakable a hell of a lot. It's so nice that most critics seem to remember it fondly.

Mcavoy as Patricia especially was really terrific
Interesting to seeing how Shyamalan has gone from hugely successful to reaching a point where people were laughing at seeing his name in trailers so they started hiding his involvement in films (not to mention the disastrous The Last Airbender and After Earth where he was essentially a hired gun) all the way through to becoming reasonably successful again. Moving into doing low budget, low-key films seems to have been the right move.
I keep saying that Hollywood film-makers should be slashing their budgets. The less you spend on a film the less it has to make to be considered successful, it's the key to Hollywood's survival. Spread out your money into more low budget films, spread the risk and bring back creativity to the screen.
If they were good enough though, they'd have eventually been discovered on DVD.
Charlie Panayiotou right. his best work is when he just makes movies without big budgets. Split is up there with his best work.
+basquat76 Average is better than most films that they're throwing a lot more money at in my opinion. A film only has to be average when it doesn't have to make $150 million in its opening weekend.
glad Kermode recognizes Unbreakable as his finest work and that The Village gets more hate than it deserves, sad to hear he didn't have anything more positive to say on Signs, which I also prefer to the Sixth Sense
why are you sad that his opinion is different to yours
Because much like The Village, Signs has an unnecessary level of hate/lack of appreciation
...in your opinion
Kermode has chinned signs previously.
championed not chinned.
i thought Split was fantastic, definitely M.Night's best work in a very long time
That's not saying much....which one is it then? Fantastic or best work in a very long time? That quite a steep scale.
I can honestly say, "Split was the best film that I watched yesterday". But it's no Gods of Egypt.
I think he succeeded at making a better made film but I still think his ideas themselves are a little goofy
split’s fine. I personally enjoyed the visit more because it’s more simple and it’s short. But split is probably a more interesting film.
I'm quite interested in this just purely because of McAvoy's performance.
PauLtus B If this was released earlier McEvoy should have got a best actor nom. He is phenomenal!
his performance is obnoxious
PANCAST TV
Is this movie """"good"""" enough for the Oscars?
I'm so glad Kermode has a soft spot for the village. I found it to be a modern day fairytale that was profound, moving and superbly acted. And the score was simply mesmerising and melancholic
I'm looking forward to seeing it - not because of M. Night Shyamalan or McAvoy's tour de force, but because of Anya Taylor-Joy, whom I''ve been so taken with ever since The VVitch.
She was also really wonderful in Morgan and in Barry, the Netflix Barack Obama movie.
My favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie is The Village. Yes, you could see the twist coming - but it's the mood, the images, the performances, the score, that make the film great.
Since then, Queen's Gambit. She's great.
Am I right in thinking it's good if you don't take too seriously?
Even without the twist, that was a damn good movie! Arguably the best villain origin story.
What was the twist?
There has been some measure of criticism at both _The Visit_ and _Split_ among my colleagues who, like myself, have a lived history of mental illness, due to the tendency of cinema to link violence to those who experience mental illness. As it happens, I find it so very lazy to the point that, when a violent act occurs, such as the recent incident in Melbourne, a common reaction is to complain about how mental illness is used to circumvent justice, and also to attack and denigrate the mental health system and the mentally ill. (Of course, the fact that people who, like myself, have a lived history of schizophrenia, are no more violent per 1000 than the general populace, yet are ten times more likely to be the victims of violence, doesn't cross their minds.)
Given the twist at the end though, does that not recontextualise the movie for you. As in the world of the movie might accommodate someone like Kevin more naturally.
@Steve Davis
It's established earlier on a couple of times that The Beast has harder skin ("like a Rhino") so the shots didn't enter the body and do damage, just damaged the skin a bit. At the end the other personalities remark that the shots "didn't go through".
M Night S is back! And what a comeback, last year he gave us The Visit a very decent film, and this year Split. Say what you like about MNS but what I like about him is that he doesn't release squeals based on the success of his films and let's face it he's had few, the village is one of them and I completely agree with Mark as I loved it very much, and what's more it had JP in it one of my favorite actors, often unplanned squeals are released because a film was a success, I like it when writers produce something great and then move on to the next project.
Even the poster gives the twist away.
Thought it was excellent. One of the best and most unique/genuine movies of the last year and a half.
A decent film made really enjoyable by the surprise ending which left me walking out the cinema smiling... Looking forward to the film that follows. Btw Signs is a great film.
Glad to see someone else sees Unbreakable as the great film it is.
Not a plot twist. More like an end credit scene/teaser. It doesnt change anything because the story ends with the girl in the car. It's just a brilliant one. Would you call the appearance of Tony Stark in Hulk at the end as plot twist? It adds value to the story because now you know that what you just watched is part of a bigger story. Dont you get it? It's like any other comic superhero movies nowadays.
I'm not completely sure, is the tony stark scene at the very end of the credits?
People are spoiling this movie in these comments! dont read them if you dont want the movie spoiled!
I'm glad to finally see a review like this after watching countless reviewers declaring split a flawless movie. It was fine.
Can we all agree that The Happening was one of the worst films of the last 10 years? I was so angry by the end of that film.
Yea Marky Mark Walhberg talking to a plant and down a drain pipe.
i think the same as Kermode, the sixth sense and unbreakable are superb movies, the village and signs are also very good, then he had a real slump but he is returning to a bit of form. no matter what you may think, he is still one of the few directors that i look forward to seeing his next movies, no matter what, as I know that he will make another great movie again.
Correct description: The girls aren't all siblings
As a detractor of MNS, I appreciate the statement, "I can just about manage Signs."
patricia aka aunt val from the league of gentlemen.
A lot of people say Ana Taylor Joy's (I belive that's the main actresse's name) performance was great, which shocks me, she had the same expression throughout the movie.
The film maybe long in parts, however the film’s still A well acted, scary, realistic & intriguing psychological thriller. (76%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
I actually agree with Kermode about this film. I don't think Split is a bad film - I'll echo YMS and say thats a good movie - but I actually found The Visit better. And while there were elements that were good in this film, which is why its not bad, there were aprts that still make me scratch my head. And there was one moment, near the end of the film, that I felt could be handled better.
It is frustrating - Shyamalaan could be doing much better, as he had demonstrated in the distant past.
Watching it as I type...I guess that's not a good sign
The end s the greatest reveal ever
Reading the comments it seem people are
split
about this movie.
This was an incredibly generous review for me...I found the film utterly dreadful. Towards the end there were audible groans of frustration among the audience around me.
The film is worth watching for one reason only, in my opinion: James McAvoy. The script becomes increasingly ropey and the female characters are very two dimensional and frustrating as hell, but McAvoy saves the day...just. 3/5
McAvoy has a lot of fun in the role and there's no doubting his talent. Like most MKS films there's much wrong with Split.
Shyamalan wants a piece of the cinematic universe pie I guess
DanceLikeANitwit he wanted to make unbreakable a trilogy since just after unbreakable was released - best to research these things first
Signs has good and bad. But was very eerie in the cinema at the time
love Split. I disagree with Mr Kenmode on Lady in the Water I love it.
I Love the Village & Signs.
But Mark, maybe you just need to rewatch it? You did say Jackie came together only after second viewing.
Could have got on board with this if one of the 23 characters had been Steve from shameless!
I thought it was an average story/thriller but I enjoyed the performance from mcavoy a lot. So I'd probably would have given it a 7/10. The final reveal was very cool and got me hyped though so I'd say an 8 overall. That said if you hadn't seen the film in question then this reveal will go over your head completely I imagine. Plot wise The Beast in this movie (Spilt) reminded me of the Red Dragon story line from the Hannibal TV series.
I loved Lady in The Water. And The Visit.
I wouldn’t sit through a second viewing of this cartoony film if Bruce Willis gave me $230 🍿
I love McAvoy but in this he’s pretentious cartoony rather silly
I love the young girl in the film
IT’S NOT BRILLIANT
IT’S BAD!
It's not brilliant, it's not bad. It's.
Tied.
Naw it's brilliant~
Shyamalan's movies seem to continue to hold onto such a strong divide and polar reaction. I guess....it is what it is.
Would have been cool if James McEvoy got 23 different scripts and paycheques...
The ending is a perfect example of why fan service sucks. It could have been a great movie.
three siblings? fix the description man
I wish Mark would see a doctor about his gas. Between that and his lip smacking he drives me nuts
I found the film profoundly disturbing. From a medical perspective I feel it turned a serious psychiatric condition into a cheap, snarling horror, with a lack of plot development. Not his best work.
amazing acting work, but the whole plot and movie overal was alright nothing special.
The review : Not brilliant, but not bad.
Netflix wait while im on the computer,
I enjoyed AFTER EARTH 🌍 _ so get it right up ye 😁
MintSauce ! But, but, but it was awful
I liked the production design 😎👍
split case city
To be honest, if you're still butthurt about the film critic character in Lady in the Water a decade after the movie came out, you're just proving Shayamalan's point.
mabusestestament It's no more 'pretentious' than Mark Kermode (and frankly many other critics) can sometimes get.
People took the film critic way too seriously. It's obvious from this and The Visit that Kermode is still butthurt about it. There's a point where I think you have to let it go. If you're a film critic and you're still mad about Shayamalan's jokes about film criticism made a decade ago, you're just proving his point about film critics.
Stupid elements in a movie don't stop being worthy of ridicule just because a certain amount of time has passed. I mean, people still make fun of Plan 9.
You seem to overlook the possibility that Lady in the Water is not a great film - and film critics are being over-sensitive about what seems to be a light-hearted jab. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Mark brings up this anecdote every time Shyamalan's name gets brought up. I think the suggestion that he is somewhat hung up on this issue is not that contentious.
mabusestestament The Visit and Split are fine, stylish, thrillers
Shalama-lama-ding-dong
Anyone else felt that this movie completely sucked?
Yes. Even the ending didn't save it. It has no redeeming qualities. Macavoy maybe. But he drowned in the trash compactor. I can't belive people and even critics liked this bore fest.
Full of unintentional comedy, cringe-inducing genre cliches, a huge anti-climax to the main plot, and a fistful of unsatisfying loose ends that I don't really care to see tied off in the inevitable SHYAMALA-VERSE sequels. (That said, McAvoy's performance was undeniably brilliant, it just didn't save this hack movie for me.)
nope
I didn't think it sucked, I thought some bits were predictable. IE who would survive & how the beast would evolve to be sort of super human. It's annoying me that I paid £4.50 to rent this on Amazon prime and unbreakable isn't included with prime membership. Can't they do a buy one get a prequel free deal? 😫
+Disco
Honestly the ending was the thing that killed the movie for me.
I wish people would just make films.
This is the worst film I've ever seen
