  • The Vanishing (AKA Spoorloos) is a 1988 Dutch Thriller film by George Sluizer and I personally believe that the antagonist (Raymond Lermone) is the most terrifying villain in any film that I’ve seen and this video explains why

    To those who say: "He's not scary."
    **That's the literal point.**
    Raymond is not supposed to be scary cuz that makes it obvious. This is a movie about a serial killer, they are smart, swift and can almost always get out of any situation.
    They aren't Boogeymen who wear black trenchcoats and stalk alleyways. They have lives, homes, wealth, bright futures and Murder is just a hobby to them, an adrenaline rush to feel alive, or a game and you lose that game if you get caught.
    Raymond is scary because we see what he did, we know what he's doing. His family and friends see him as a hero and a well-loved member of the community.
    "That's not scary, that's boring."
    No, it's hiding in plain sight, it's being stealthy, it's genius.

    This film really does a fantastic job of driving home the point of you never know who is capable of what. Or what is going through someone’s mind. Evil can come from anywhere and look like anyone else. This film was fantastic, it really got in my head.

      @sydschlei8035 Exactly! Evil doesn't discriminate and it doesn't have a particular "look" that makes it easy to spot which is why the phrase "appearances can be deceiving" was one of the most important words of advice that my mother taught me. I have a friend who went on a few different Tinder dates years ago and this one guy tried to attack her but my friend elbowed him in the ribs and was able to escape. When we spoke about it a couple of days later, she was still very surprised that he tried to attack her because he "looked so nice and harmless and normal...". I told her that it doesn't matter what people look like or what they appear to be, there are a lot of people in the world who are very good actors.

    As an American I am continually finding out that many films I viewed made by an American film company often are revealed to be a remake from a far more superior European - foreign original and am often disappointed that I experienced the film by watching a poorly recreated attempt first without knowing the original already exists, very disappointing

    I'm so old that I actually saw this movie when it was first released in the States. We had never seen such a realistic depiction of a psychopathic killer in cinema before. We had "Freddy" and "Jason", but they were literal monsters and we all know monsters don't exist. "Normal" looking men with sick minds do exist and they can be your neighbors, head of the HOA, parent of the year, etc. This film draws heavily from the Ted Bundy killings, as mentioned throughout. That was very intentional on the director's part. If you want to call Raymond "evil" you'd be correct; if you want to call him a "sociopath" you'd also be correct. I fail to see the difference. Some of the comments in this thread are as dull and mind-numbing as the American remake. A friendly neighbor who is capable of the abhorrent acts depicted in this film is far more terrifying than a monster lurking in the basement.
    If you choose to watch this film you should keep the historical and cultural context in mind. If you have nothing to add to the conversation then please be on your merry way.

    Fantastic movie, thanks for the review. I've now seen it a few times and keep finding small details that amaze me. At the end, Raymond's wife is watering 2 sapling trees as he is watching her ( also the trailer cart he used is seen in the background ) Possibly Raymond has planted them right on top of the graves. Earlier in the movie Rex & Saskia buried 2 gold coins underneath 2 trees, which he is seen around later before drinking the coffee at the gas station...coincidence? Also John Hammond at 1:36

    • @jackiekelly4776
      @jackiekelly4776 2 месяца назад +2

      @theoddsocks4289 I've never noticed that particular detail in the end although I did notice Saskia burying the two gold coins(the use of golden objects, especially Saskia's dream about the "golden egg", being a recurring theme throughout the film)under a tree at the petrol station. Here are a couple of other things I noticed during my third viewing of the film...1) Raymond's careful, consistent, and meticulous step by step planning of the attack-from practicing how to lure his future victim into his car, how much chloroform to use, etc. 2) Upon first arriving at his vacation home in an apparently remote area, his neighbour comments on the height of the shrubs surrounded his house with Raymond casually replying that he won't have to worry about strangers peeking into his house. When Raymond's younger daughter screams upon finding a spider inside a table drawer, the rest of the family is amused enough to the point that they all compete to see who has the loudest scream; Raymond asks the same neighbour the following day if he heard any screams coming from his house to which the neighbour says he didn't which implies that if Raymond's future victim was imprisoned in the basement and screamed for help, no one would hear their screams. The fact that Raymond thought of literally EVERYTHING regarding the entire attack/abduction is what I find to be most frightening.

    • @jackiekelly4776
      @jackiekelly4776 2 месяца назад +2

      @theoddsocks4289 Edit to my previous comment: I just rewatched the scenes where Raymond and his family are at their vacation home and the conversation he has with his neighbour actually occurs the morning after the "screaming contest" at dinner. His neighbour approaches Raymond's car to greet him, the neighbour memtions the height of the shrubs surrounding the house and suggests that Raymond trims them in order to allow more sunlight into the house to which Raymond agrees but also says that the increased visibility of the house could attract the attention of burglars. Raymond then goes on to say that as he and his family were arriving the night before, he heard what sounded like screams coming from the direction of his house and asks his neighbour if he might have heard the screams too but the neighbour says he didn't hear anything.
      Edit #2: I also just noticed that both Saskia and Raymond's two daughters are fair skinned and have strawberry blonde hair.
      P.S. Another thing I noticed that occurs right before Saskia gets into Raymond's car is that she hesitates and stands outside with the car door open while she appears to be having second thoughts until she notices a picture of Raymond and his family on the dashboard of the car which lulls her into a false sense of security. Like I said in my previous comment, the way Raymond thought of literally EVERYTHING as well as the time he spent perfecting his ruse is, quite frankly, scary as shit.

    I just discovered this chilling film. The casting is amazing. Saskia, with her effervescent, fresh beauty, so life-loving and loved. She was perfectly cast, and when he takes her, we feel an ache, a disbelief, an anguished why, just like her husband. We yearn for closure, just like he does. We loathe the antagonist, yet want to understand him.
    But after studying serial killers myself, I now understand that there is no point in understanding them; the only a point is preventing them and the way we prevent them from doing their sick work is by educating the public. It is absolutely possible to outsmart a killer.

    He isn't "evil." He is amoral. He has psychopathy. He slowly discovers he lacks traits others have, like empathy and fear. His actions are a scientific approach to testing the limits of what he is capable of. He buries her alive because it's what others would deem the worst thing you could do to someone, and he is curious if he's capable of that. Will that make him feel something? And when he does the same to Rex, he's coldly indifferent to it. He's just giving him what he wants.

    I enjoyed the movie. I definitely see the appeal. The only disappointment for me was with a movie full of set-up lines = pay off actions (ex. “Killing is not the worst thing/I have claustrophobia” = Rex buried alive). There were lots of “are you having an affair?” questions from Raymond’s family…only to be no pay off (ex. His wife finding something of Saskia’s or Rex’s to confirm her suspicions).

    I think the main point of this movie is to show that anyone, according to circumstances, can become either a "hero" or a "monster". That's in us and most of the time, we don't really decide which side will pop-up. I saw that movie as a warning : you think you know who you are, you think you know the stuf you're made off, but you're delusional : you are less in charge that you believe. This is why you can have large-scale horrific events, genocides and so on : the right context - war time, typically - is able to transform an entire population of so-called "normal people" in horrendous criminals. The most terrifying villain is the one sleeping in us, waiting the good moment to awake.

    You see the American remake does suck but J expect we have different reasons for believing this. As an American, were I to have a loved one go missing and I were confronted with a man (women or child for that matter) who claimed responsibility, I could learn everything I wanted to know without having to drink a goddamn thing they gave me. I'm capable of much worse than leaving someone in a box in the ground, in fact I'm certain I could make them beg for such kindness before I was through and would know everything in their head, literally. People that say torture doesn't work have had different life experiences than I. Sometimes the only way to deal with truly "bad" guys is to be worse. As long as you are sure in your convictions it shouldn't trouble you much.
