I think that Kim never having a brave moment is faithful to the lovecraftian nature of the film. She's absolutely terrified, hiding, and lucky to be alive. I would be the exact same in this scenario. Most real people would.

I feel like she did get one, albeit off camera. She bashed the cult members head to smush before The Son finds her in the end.

It's why I always find it hard to criticise these movies harshly. It's not the Disney remake of Mulan with millions of dollars pissed on it. It's an earnest passion project with not even a $100,000 dollar budget that was probably a bitch to make what with all the real things they had to make and incorporate into the film. It's why this is better than a lot of Blumhouse's output to me despite both also having mini budgets; heart and soul. Whether it succeeds or fails in its goals, you can't argue it's cynical; only that it didn't work at what it tried to do.

Wow, this is timing. I just watched this movie last weekend. Great video! I think I'm actually a bit more forgiving of the movie. I like how few answers we got and how abruptly the conflict ended. I do agree that the Father's and Son's characters could have used a bit more elaboration, but I also feel like I might catch more from them on a second viewing.

Oh man I remember watching this one and getting absolutely incensed at the ending. There just was not enough in the movie to get me invested but the effects were insanely well done.

I enjoyed the practical effects and the eerie tone of the entire movie. I'd like to see whatever else they create.

I loved the movie. It was genuinely scary without the need for jump scares. The practical effects reminded me of The Thing. The monster gouging out the cops eyes set the tone. I felt that the ending was definitive. The cop-hero and his wife would be stuck in the void forever, the price they pay for killing the morphed doctor. The movie begs a sequel.

Perhaps you could say horror fans enjoy this in the same way people who like CG blockbuster action movies enjoy them, even if there's dumb things.

To me, judging something like this movie vs something like Harry Potter or Doctor Who is on passion. For all the flaws a movie can have, it's impossible to argue that this one was cynical. A bad movie from Nickelodeon, Paramount, Saban? Lazy or bad at worst, cynical at worst. This kind of film must have been a royal pain in the ass to work on just because of the amount of real shit in it. Also probably why most films use CGI; practical effects are a bitch to create, especially when it's the horror genre and you have both a budget and a time limit.

Story had more holes then Swiss cheese. It was kind of ok but it just didn’t make sense a number of times. Effects were ok I guess. But a little bit soft, the failed experiment characters didn’t get a good enough turn, could have been a bigger part of the story. The doctor at the end was like a hell raiser rip off. Average. Ok for a bit of a giggle but not so much if you want a good scare and are looking for a good storyline. I mean the story was kind of ok. But it just left way too much unanswered. Anyway. It was ok.
