Chris Stuckmann reviews The Void, starring Aaron Poole, Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Welsh, Daniel Fathers, Mik Byskov, Art Hindle, Evan Stern. Directed by Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostanski.
My friend Steve Kostanski did all the make up and prosthetic FX and my old instructor in make up school played the final monster/villain! I'm so excited you reviewed this movie, you're my favourite reviewer on youtube and I saw this movie at the Toronto premiere in October at our Toronto After Dark festival, and I'm so excited this movie is getting the attention it has been. I love all the different movies you cover on your channel and I hope you never stop!
Oh man that's cool. This movie is definitely top 3 I'm creatures and effects for me. I love that the monsters are actually downright disturbing, not just your average scary. I hope he gets big because horror needs people like him.
Tell them they did a great job, especially the Doctor's "child". It really looks visually stunning.
I loved this movie for that exact reason! I wish more movies would donthat instead of CGI.
Great job! Better than cgi. Obviously influenced by Rick Baker’s Thing.
so: weird religious teachings, creepy cultists, horrifying creatures, main characters unable to understand, ambiguous plot; Lovecraft is that you?
Yeah, I Love its Craft! ;) Cthulhu huhuhuhuhu *weird tentacle underwater brooding*
I just saw the title and got excited with the hope of a modern Lovecraft inspired horror film, and it seems like my hype paid off!
It does sound very Lovecraft, which is hopefully pulled off well because it's so easy to fuck up the dude's work.
ohm.hay.hot
Lovecraft is easily as omnipresent as the alien gods he wrote about. You can't swing a dead cat around the film and book industry without hitting a Lovecraft reference.
I highly enjoyed this movie. The Lovecraftian influence as well as the nods to John Carpenter's The Thing made this highly engaging viewing. It could've used 30 extra minutes to add connective tissue between some of it's story elements, but other than that, a solid watch. 8/10, would purchase a physical copy.
Michael Zaki is it disturbing and gory 🤔
Just what I was thinking
ViciousBane 56 its almost impressively gory, yes. Some truly nightmarish visuals in there.
The ambiguity of this movie is one of its biggest strengths IMO. This is cosmic horror not just another monster movie. The whole point is that there are entities from other planes of existence that humans cant even comprehend. If you sit there and explain every single detail it will lose a large part of what makes it a cosmic Lovecraft type of story.
Harleigh19 and thats why this movie is not for everyone...
Thank you for getting it !
Weren't the two hunter guys trying to kill the guy and the girl in the beginning because they knew they were involved with the cult? I thought their symbol was on the door or the wall of the house. I haven't watched the movie in over a month so I can't exactly remember but I thought that's what was happening.
I just couldn't get on board with the whole, "an evil older than time" narrative. A lot of it just didn't make sense and I felt it needed some explaining. For the most part it wasn't bad, but I found it more weird than scary.
Wray Townsend well honestly it's a lovecraft inspired film and lovecraft doesn't really care for characterization, heck most of his main characters are unamed, and this film executed the lovecraftian formula very well
I was part of this movies kickstarter!!!! :D I love these guy's movies!
This type of horror needs to make a comeback. Wish studios would have more balls to release "out there" material like this.
This is why I am disappointed in the direction Stranger Things went. They had so much potential with cosmic horror with the Mind Flayer, but ultimately it was created by a psychopathic psychic. There is still room for the whole thing to add to the cosmic flair and maybe flip the switch and have it so the Mind Flayer is controlling him, but I doubt they will do that. I am quite tired of having understandable villains. I really want an antagonist that is beyond reason in a well developed movie.
Such an original movie. Not an original story, but it's great to see the Cthulu Mythos represented in a great way.
I just saw this movie and being a huge Lovecraft fan I was blown away by this. Awesome job.
Its rare and kinda precious to have misterious story and great FX creatures in same movie. A must.
What about the hilariousity review for "Gods of Egypt"? I'm still waiting for it.
Yes! That move was... stupendously awful..
funnily enough I wrote an email to Chris regarding this hilariocity a week or two ago. No response though xD
Bismarc Silva I'm pumped for that.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was stupid (and it knew it), but it was also big, fun and imaginative.
Same here. I usually enjoy movies like that, when we know what they want to accomplish, but they never succeed. The Room, Samurai Cop and Gods of Egypt are extremely fun movies to watch imo, especially when you're high.
80s teen here...yes I must watch this movie. the thing was epic and still is. practical effects is the shit! I miss these kinds of movies even if it's just to see the special effects in camera.
"I grew up in the Void" - Chris Stuckmann
Don't you mean *with* the Void?
i couldn't avoid this video
Do an analyse for the neon demon, you promissed it Chris!
the movie is superficial. what can you analyse about it?
It had enough symbolisme and metaphoares in it, just like only god forgives and drive he did one for it
figure shit out yourself, the whole point of movies evoke an emotion in you if you watch someone else analyse a movie then what's the point?
Huckleberry lol you get easily triggerd Huh? I found it already out, I just wantend to hear Chris analyse it and his views on it. Why watch movie reviews when you can figure it out yourself how the movie was huh?
You are allowed to think for yourself and come up with your own theories, whilst also wanting to see someone else's opinion on the matter....
I was really in love with this film. I am a huge love craft fan and from the second it started I was absolutely blown away
"Cthulhu is my father, so I grew up in the void, and this movie really speaks to me..."
Triangle
Cosmic Horror is so hard to do and this wasn't a bad crack at the genre at all. Loved the ambiguity but feel like they could've benefited from not using so much fake blood; the blood storm blows its load pretty early on then gets tired fast. Need more LoveCraftian horror like this in the mainstream
Righteous. Had seen several disappointing reviews, but thought, "yeah, but will I like it?" Fortunately, you filled all the blanks with your review. Looks to me like a mashup of Carpenter's Prince of Darkness and The Thing, which would be admirable in the attempt, at least.
Wat? No HTML support? Dang you, U2B.
this film changed my life
The scene of confusion and insanity when all of the characters meet is the most underrated scene of 2016. Very captivating movie.
Almost to a million subs! Great moves Chris, keep it up. Proud of you!
Looking forward to seeing it! I grew up enjoying those non-CGI body horror movies (The Thing -1982, Alien - 1979), especially the David Cronenberg films (The Fly, Videodrome)
I gotta tell ya, Chris... even with movies I couldn't care less about, you make it entertaining to watch the review. I don't really watch movie review channels much at all but your engaging personality keeps me coming back. Thanks for all of the hard work you put into what you do. It definitely shows.
Knives Chau is in it, so that's making me watch it.
I liked the movie, but the woman who played her (Ellen Wong) was the only one who gave a good performance.
@@beneales I disagree I think most of the characters were acted well.
For some reason, I'm reminded of Bill from Gravity Falls. Heck, the cult symbol is a triangle and an eye!!! It even takes place at a hospital in the middle of the woods!
As a fan of Carpenter and Barker stories and movies, I really enjoyed this movie. Though the ending left out way too many questions unanswered to the point where it was quite disappointing. Still a recommended horror watch... The journey itself is quite satisfying..
E Schur but is it kinda disturbing and gory 🤔
Yup, Its a very disturbing and gory watch.
And enjoyable! I'd definitely watch it again!
this film changed my life
@@michael-4k4000 watch more movies then
This film was a pleasure to watch im honestly proud of the film makers of this film, especially with the special effects it was a right joy.
Some of your complaints, such as the ambiguous nature and the ending, are par for the course for Lovecraft fans. So if any Lovecraft fans are reading this, check it out! Just saw it myself and wasn't disappointed.
Chris been killing it with the reviews of smaller movies lately. Please keep this up
Review Shutter Island. I know it's been a long time since that movie released but please still review it.
Great film with awsome twist
Ilovekebabs Yeah. My second favorite film after Prestige
If by awesome you mean "predictable from the first five minutes if you've ever seen a movie before". ;)
codyw1 How the fuck was the ending predictable? In fact it’s impossible you predicted that ending. I call absolute BS, that’s one of the greatest modern plot twist of modern movies. And I’m not talking about the surface level revelation that he was insane the whole time. I’m talking about him revealing his mental state was self inflicted to suffer from him killing his wife. Impossible that you guessed that
I'm really glad you reviewed this movie. It's not very often that small, independent, Canadian horror movies get any sort of attention from reviewers down south. One of the directors, Steve Kostanski, has done a tonne of makeup and special effects work for things like Hannibal, Crimson Peak, and Todd and the Book of Pure Evil.
If you liked this one I'd definitely recommend a little movie called Pontypool. Directed by Bruce McDonald, who also directed some of my all-time favourite films, Hard Core Logo and Highway 61; it follows a once-bigtime shock-jock radio DJ who's forced to take a radio job in a small Ontario town called Pontypool. One day during the show a zombie-like virus begins to infect the English language, and shit goes pretty pear-shaped.
Not as heavy on the special effects as The Void, but there's a similar feeling of "we need to figure out what's going on before we all die" to it.
I'd also recommend to two movies I mentioned before, Hard Core Logo, and Highway 61. In the first, a fictional highly influential Vancouver punk band reunites for a benefit show and reunion tour, which quickly begins to fall apart as the band members find out that they've reunited for some pretty dubious reasons. In Highway 61, a small town barber finds a dead body in his back yard and becomes a town celebrity for it. A "rock n roll refugee" comes across the body and tricks him into thinking he's her brother and that they need to take the body to New Orleans for a funeral. Meanwhile, Satan's following them the entire time, trying to get his hands on the body.
just watched this movie....
what the fuck did i just watch
A Z T R O K E K where did you watch it? No theaters are showing it never me but I desperately want to see it
(sadly illegally) it's called 123movies.net , there was no chance of me ever seeing this movie in theater so said screw it... lol
i said*
I know I just watched it & I was like wth did I just watch breh, shut is weird! 😨
Can watch it on Netflix now. Took me two tries to finish and I really couldn't remember much after. While practical effects are awesome and everything, there's just nothing else about this movie to love. I often feel these body horror movies just kind of blend together in my head because more often than not the characters suck and the plot line is simply disturbing for the sake of disturbing. So much so that it's like you can't even be immersed in the movie because it's just so unbelievably gross. SPOILERS And you can see that it's the old white pervert dude from a mile away always talking about "his creation" being "so beautiful".
Saw this movie because of your review and I have to say I wasn't disappointed... now I use your channel as a "what to watch" thank you for all you do it's greatly appreciated...
WTF i can't find this movie... all i can find is Enter the Void and The Void with some guy in phonecell Box... Where can i find this Movie please??
Alejandro Nunez comes out April 7
oh!!! thanks alot.
Alejandro Nunez type into Google 123movies
It's only showing in select theaters so finding one that would feature it will be tough.
It's on VOD now.
This sounds amazing! The Thing is one of my all time favourite films and I love that they've this film in that vein with actual prosthetic effects!
carpenter's assault on precinct 13 (isolated location under siege by horde not afraid of dying where good guys and bad guys must cooperate) + carpenter's the thing (transformation) + cronenberg (body horror) + lovecraft = the void.
Wow am I ever late to the party with this one lol. Just watched it and it’s like a three-way between The Thing, Doom, and The Call of Cthulhu.
Fucking bonkers! 🤘🤘
It really is great. I try to tell everyone about this film, especially if they are horror (particularly cosmic Horror) and sci-fi horror fans, and fans of classic 80s films.
It is a mix between The Thing and Dagon.
I remember when this film was just a kickstarter with a proof of concept video, and now it's a feature film being reviewed by a prominent internet critic. Super happy for those guys, gives me hope ^^
Chris needs to review classic films. I really want to know his opinion on many of them.
this film changed my life
I've been a huge fan for a long time and this is the best place to get my movie reviews. yer the best Cris
I loved the ever loving shit out of this movie. It inspired me to go write a brand new song, as soon as I finished the movie.
Saw this last night and absolutely loved it. From the practical effects to the homage to Lovecraft and the 1980s' horror beats, its truly terrific. Just crazy as hell and gory as hell. Fantastic film.
Having problems finding a theater showing Trainspotting 2?
Jarejander69 I've been waiting for my local theaters to show that movie.
same why tf has it not come out yet
Jarejander69 It's hard in Ohio
They only released it in like 3 theaters (not really) I've been waiting months to see it
It's amazing. Definitely try to find a theatre with it
comes out this Friday vod and I'll be buying it the moment its available. I've been extremely excited for this one.
I just saw this film and as a huge lovecraft fan I loved it, a lot of people bitch about anything being ambiguous or being left to interpretation because they are used to being spoon fed everything and "thinking is hard :(" the only real problem I have is the lack of character development, but then again, lovecraft never really cared about human characters
Glad to hear you liked it. Of course none of the theaters in my town got it. All we got was Smurfs, The Case for Christ, and Going in Style. We didn't even get Colossal! But there was another indie horror film that's supposed to come out this week: The Transfiguration. It's another one I really want to see.
I enjoyed this movie, loved the whole prosthetics and the actors reactions to the whole situation if normal every day people were put in a situation like this. To me it gave off a really Silent Hill vibe where just a normal guy is just at the wrong place, at the wrong time and discovers this huge incomprehensible ideology. It does have it's flaws but it really is a fun movie.
So glad you did a review on this film... cannot wait to see it
I did wonder if this is a movie I should not avoid
I just discovered this movie yesterday and plan on watching it very soon. I can't believe this movie flew under my radar for so long.
*Chris Grew up with the Void*
*And with Zod's Snapped Neck too*
stfu already
and black friends
Here's a picture of Chris with his void friends.
chris grew up with this meme
I just love when you review fun and unknown movies, is so good discover new movies and directors and have fun with different things.
I really want Chris to make a analysis video on why some movies need more character development than other movies. Everybody is calling Chris a hypocrite just because he have harsh criticisms on Kong and Rogue One, but not this movie.
Void, Annihilation, and Underwater are the best recent Cosmic Horror films. What do you guess the daily life of a Cultist is like? How could a Cultist enhance their career/life goals with whatever magic they had discovered?
Hey Chris I know that you don't review animated tv shows but can you make an exception and make a review on Rick and Morty? Pretty please with sugar on top.
If you haven't watched it, trust me you won't regret it.
Varinder Bhandal hell YES
Varinder Bhandal It was brilliant
Joo PanG! I'm personally not a fan of it.
ill give it a few episodes , i always thought it was like a disney xd show or something
one of my favorites, if not the favorite, this year. for me there was no confusion, don't want to spoil but even before any creature appears, the first time we get a glimpse of the planet and nebulae, the alien landscapes and what lurks beyond the sky and clouds, being a lovecraft mythos fan to the bone, it all made perfect sense until the very end. could they do a better job at delivering that to people who had no idea what's going on at the time? mos def. but still i fucking loved it for the mythos as well as the practical effects. thumbs up for you channel!
Did you grow up with a void in your heart?
Just watched this movie and I really enjoyed it, quite the ride!
Some of the "entities" in this movie really gave me a Dead Space-feel, which got me thinking that it would be awesome if the creators of The Void would be involved in a screen adaption of the Dead Space - series if that were to happen in the future!
The monsters look incredible, but the movie's just alright imo 6/10
Same. Pacing needed some improvement. Story needed to be fleshed out a tiny bit more.
Hey Chris, I like how you manage to explain the good and bad parts of a movie without spoiling them for us. I have been following your channel since I happen to have a similar taste in movies and I was just wondering what your favorite horror movies are (other than the ones on your A+ list)..
Hello, Chris! Please, review the movie _"Before I Wake"_. Thank you!
Yes! I second this.
I second this
just watched this and was floored. What a fantastic eldritch body horror film. Very Lovecraftian.
Don't agree about the end. I thought it was just right. Part of Lovecraft's horror is that you can't understand everything.I only wish I had seen this at release. Eldritch horror is hard to do in film, but adding in the body horror really helps have some thing to show the audience and we need more horror like this.
The effects were so far beyond what I expected and really made me nostalgic for those awesome 80s/90s practical effects movies because they are still going to look great 20 or 30 years from now.
"I'm a huge fan of 80s horror."
Aren't we all?
That poster is F**KING amazing!!! That's how you do a poster. I wish all movie posters were that creative these days.
Enter The Void?
I thought Chris was going to review an obscure horror movie from the 80s that slipped my mind, I'm glad that we're getting more movies like this now.
Can you make a new hilariocity review. Please?
Adithya Prakash those are the best
Adithya Prakash BIRDEMIC!!!
WH250398 yes! please do that Chris, review birdemic
Omg yes PLEASE!!!!!!!
cool cat hahaha
Nothing wrong with the characters . The end he closed the gate . He is stuck in the void with his wife , and the subliminal views of the one man’s wife stand behind the guy that doesn’t talk well done
Very reminiscent of the ending to Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond. But a very good movie in it’s own right.
For the people wondering if I grew up with this movie, yes yes I did!
That movie is gonna be released on Blu-ray in Germany on May 19. I already have it on my wish list. Love that stuff!
The Void was a masterpiece.
No.
absolutely original and amazing ! awesome mix of Carpenter/Lovecraft/80s horror
Absolutely UNoriginal. You say so in your own comment... it doesn't break any new ground, doesn't add anything new to the genre; it just follows what others have done before and relies on gore to overcome a very weak story.
what movie doesnt follow what came before ? please enlighten us to what an original horror movie would be oh wise one
"Absolutely Original!" You say. "What movie doesn't follow what came before" You say.... these are contradictions. Maybe you're too stupid to understand that an homage isn't original, it is derivative. You may enjoy that it derives its source materials from other things you like, but that doesn't make it original. I ask again, what new ground did it break? What themes and topics were explored that haven't been done? How did it expand the genre of cosmic horror? What specifically about this film was "ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL"?
Good point about the not sufficiently developed characters. The villains seems strangely exempt from this - I find heim to be sufficiently fleshed out and actually compelling. I cared about the characters still, mostly because of the good performances.
chris grew up with 80 horror. i didnt see that coming.
About time for a collection video
But you wanted Kong: Skull Island to be a big character piece. That can't be for fun too?!?!
Chris, you're gonna hit 1 million subs soon - pretty cool!!
I watched this with a bunch of friends, they all hated it. I think after the first monster reveal you'll know whether or not you'll enjoy this movie. If you don't like where it's going turn it off because it doesn't get any better.
This movie had potential to be 1000x better than what it was. I agree with your friends; I hated it too
Get better friends, pussy
Good review. Cool background by the way. A B is a fair grade for this. Lovecraft is really challenging, especially for film, but this would have been an A movie if they could have developed the characters more and dialed in the plot even a little bit more.
please review 13 Reasons Why, I bet you're not growing up with that. haha
The burn! lmao
Aldeeran Nowicki he should review this is us
Aldeeran Nowicki Been seing a lot of people talking about that show. I'm gonna binge watch that shit tonight!
Aldeeran Nowicki Doesn't that suck?
+Floating Pooh Im 3 episodes in like the show but I hate the main chick haha
!!! I've been following this one since it was on Kickstarter (Though I wasn't a backer at the time, sadly.) but it pleases me to hear you say good things about it. Can't wait. THIS is the kind of 'Body Horror' I enjoy. I know ppl nowadays associate Body Horror more with stuff like Hostel, but that isn't really for me. I like the Cronenberg style body horror more.
Go watch THE LURE Chris!
I absolutely love how Chris reviews highly underrated movies that I can actually check out & actually be satisfied after watching them.. Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!
analysis from arrival? or Neon Demon!
Maybe I'll make one for Neon Demon.
Lopez omg fuck off, no one is going to visit your shitty channel. Also, good job liking your own comment 😂
but I didn't though lol
It's playing at Coolidge Corner at midnight this weekend...and Salem Cinema (MA) all next week. I think I'll opt w/ the one in Witch Town :D
so what you are saying is not to aVOID this movie
I really want to see this movie! My research has however has told me nothing on how I can watch it. No showtimes, no blu ray to buy, and no way to watch it digitally.
I grew up with this notification squad
Just watched this. I don't really know what to think of it. I want to say I liked it, but I'm not completely sure. like Chris said, the ending was underwhelming and the movie left me with so many questions that were never answered.
chris grew up with the void
I really hope I get the chance to see this in a theater somewhere!
So
many
butthurt
Kong fans.
And Rogue One fans.
DrLite
Why would Ghost in the Shell fans be butthurt? He was mostly positive towards the movie. He even gave it an A-
I'm really glade you did a review for this. I literally just watched the trailer for this yesterday and its not playing anywhere near me so I'm gonna have to pre-order from amazon.uk for some reason. at least now I know its worth it. thanks Chris.
Do not avoid The Void.
It makes me happy that I can now tell what the grade is going to be while he's reviewing the film.
at 2:39 is he imitating yms guy lol kind of sounds like it
abc .z - I wouldn't doubt it, yms is cool and all but is way too picky
abc .z As a YMS fan I agree this is accurate.
Thanks for the review, I'll have to check this out when it comes to VOD.
so it's ok for this movie to be "fun" and not have character development, but when Kong does it's a disappointment?
BigDoener butthurt?
BigDoener Kong is a 6/10 at best.
Eclipse36 Not butthurt, Just pointing out his flawed logic
Do you meassure the quality of Avengers the same way you do with The Godfather?
Nope, different genres, different styles, different approach of storytelling, same happens with horror and comedy, if a comedy makes you laugh and a horror film scares you, other aspects like lack of character development (in some cases) can be forgiven.
a basic movie should have a great story and characters. but story is a priority
since febuary, chris said he would review GOLD.....two months later still not out
thenoodleshop--i have not watched the movie yet,so thanks for the review!!!
13 reasons why review?
why
Art vandaley Well why not
Desert Oddity So that's it huh? We some kind of 13 Reasons Why?
I'll give you 13 reasons why you need to hop on over for my reviews.
Shit tv show!
I was slightly disappointed with this movie. It felt too rushed in the beginning and just jumped between scenes which didn't work for me. Acting was okay, parts of the story was really interesting, others....not so much. The effects where great, but the green screen at the end was very bad.
"These movies are purely made for fun"
*Proceeds to shit on Rogue One every chance he gets.*
He's a critic giving his opinions. I'm positive you have a movie, tv show, game, or music that you shit on every chance you get to. Every one does. It's called saying your opinion.
Void, Annihilation, and Underwater are the best recent Cosmic Horror films. What do you guess the daily life of a Cultist is like? How could a Cultist enhance their career/life goals with whatever magic they had discovered?
Update: Just finished this movie, and Chris is pretty spot on with his review. Characters are kinda two dimensional, the movie is very ambiguous, and scattered at times, but, as Chris also said, the make up/prosthetic are phenomenal and on a personal note, this film paying homage to Lovecraft made it enjoyable. Solid B.
