as a fan of coheed and cambria fan for about a decade now, i can say without a doubt coheed and cambria fans are the most welcoming group who just fucking love the music and the story of the albums. theres never really any haters either! never have i seen anybody just say "i hate this band!" its always "its not my liking, BUT.." "not my taste, BUT..." theres always a but theyre good though, that follows those statements. awesome band with an awesome community.
What really hits for me with Coheed is how starting with Color before the Sun every album has so much connection to Claudio becoming a dad and raising a son and what that means. Color Before the Sun being explicitly just about all the emotions Claudio was processing waiting for his son to be born and not tied to his overarching sci fi story.
But after that, the stories in the songs make a huge tonal shift from being about love and loss and betrayal and epic sci fi drama to this "smaller" story about a mom and a dad, on the run from a corrupt authority, and the challenges they face and how their kid becomes their whole universe in Vaxis 1 and 2.
There's so much in there that hits a dad right in the gut song after song.
Heck, Claudio even wrote a childrens book (kid crazy and the kilowatt king) with an Accompanying song that is a big old emo bomb.
Claudio is a national treasure. Most overlooked and underrated band of the last 20 years. One of the things I love about this band is they experiment with so many different styles and sounds. You may get the basic formula verse & chorus type song, or you may get a long epic song that is all over the place. Personally, I love their older albums, but the production values arent quite on par with the newer stuff. If you're looking for a more normal structured type song, I would recommend Gravemakers & Gunslingers, or Gravity's Union.

Coheed and cambria brings me to tears even as an adult without children. I can place myself in these situations, these circumstances, his voice really shows the weight of the emotion of the story hes trying to tell.

The song is a phenomenal capstone to the album, and even better after listening to Vaxis I, on it's own with no context it's good if not underwhelming. Absolutely adore it and absolutely love your reactions.
As a long hair man who has shed a tear in the audience at exactly the point in the song where you said that comment, I feel seen and violated lol. If you were to do a full album react/review on any of their albums, the Children of The Fence will show up to listen with you!

Yes Coheed has a huge cult following. I’ve been a die hard fan for twenty years. I can’t explain why but there’s a hopeful desperation in the music that no other band seems to hit in the same way Coheed does. I’d love to see more Coheed reactions coming from anyone lmao. Loved seeing your last video on them and clicked this right after to get more. But please keep these coming!! Welcome to your Coheed journey! Not all of the songs are these long epics, this was the conclusion of the album so there is definitely some buildup that was missed. My favorite “standalone” songs (even tho they all represent some part of the overarching, 9-album-so-far story) would be Domino the Destitute, Gravity’s Union, Far, Toys, The Dark Sentencer, The Suffering, Pavillion, No World for Tomorrow, and Here We Are Juggernaut. We’ll see if anyone else suggests any of these, there are plenty of different styles of song for everyone to find something. Love your stuff so far, best of luck Down Under!

Oh, dude. Coheed is just incredible. Top 3 band for me, next to Ween and Dance Gavin Dance. Claudio (frontman) brings lots of pop and electronic influences, Stever (lead guitarist) brings the Zeppelin, Floyd, etc. sensibilities. The rhythm section has always been extraordinary, but their lineup on that regard is a bit more fluid. All but one of their albums revolve around a sci-fi space opera graphic novel written by Claudio, but their stuff is perfectly listenable without the underlying context; Claudio writes in such a way that it isn't super esoteric.
HIGHLY recommend starting from their first album and just moving up from there. They love motifs in their music and you'll often hear reprisals of riffs from previous songs/albums throughout. It's cool to see the directions they go in. I do, however, have a couple recs that I think display different sides of Coheed's sound. I tried to keep it short but dammit there's just so much good stuff! I'll pick two from each album lol. Feel free to skim over/disregard this long ass blog post

Coheed is absolutely my favorite band of all time, they're very much an album band in my opinion
if you want to hear some more of their poppy stuff I'd recommend Blood red summer, their first album Second Stage Turbine Blade is kind of a landmark post-hardcore album and is a fantastic emo pop/punk experience, their album Good apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Volume One - From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness is the one I'd recommend if you were to react to only one album, but honestly I think starting at the very beginning is the best since you can really follow the evolution of the band and the story, as all of the albums are a part of an overarching sci-fi space opera other than "The color before the sun"

So what you might be missing is not the context itself, but simply the fact there is a ton of context. Every studio album, with the exception of one, is directly related to its own story arc in the comics, whether grapic novel or short story.
Listening to the last track on AWOTWM, is like watching the ending of an epic movie. You can feel it, but you cant necessarily appreciate it because you dont know where story began.
Do not get me wrong. You do not need to read the comics to appreciate the songs. I was a coheed fan for 10 years before i even started diving into the comics. But simply knowing that songs on a given album shine in the context of each other goes a long way towards appreciation
Coheed can also do very strong more “straight forward” songs. Might I suggest: comatose, old flames, a favor house Atlantic, ten speed
Coheed has many layers. You’ve heard the more progressive side, the above songs are very much more accessible but also full of amazing melodies and hooks to get earwormed by. If you enjoy that side then there’s even more amazing songs to explore. They really don’t write a bad song. Also amazing live, seen them 20+ times.

Omg!!! Comatose is one of those that is short, but GODS it has a hell of an impact. Usually, Coheed songs that have a short run time like: “Goodnight, Fair Lady,” Comatose, Number City, Blood Red Summer, and The Lying Lies and Dirty Secrets of Miss Erica Court all are about 3 and a half minutes but BOY does one wish they lasted longer. Like that one commenter said; Welcome to the Fence. And allow yourself to be enthralled by the magic they weave. 🤘🤘🤘
Your intuition is correct in that Coheed’s music is connected to the graphic novels. Both tell a science fiction story set primarily in a planetary system known as Heaven’s Fence. Window of the Waking Mind is definitely the deep end. If you’re looking to dip your toes in some more, I have listed below a song from each album which I feel are relatively straightforward on their surface and give an idea of the progression of the band’s sound over the last 20+ years. Would love to hear what you think.

Agree, this song is jumping a bit into the deep end for a non-fan and definitely benefits from listening to the whole album (and the one before it--same melody from Old Flames from Vaxis Act I)

Tbh I think you summed this up very well. I'm a massive coheed fan yet this song was a little on the underwhelming side for me for the reason you stated. The constant shifts in tempo makes it feel abit all over the place and feels forced in its approach.
I think they have some great tracks for sure but there’s a lot of modern music that’s more about execution than inspiration. The band “polyphia” comes to mind. There’s something timeless about a 4 chord song that keeps you singing it for years. I’ve only scratched the surface with CC though so I wouldn’t put them into that category.
