  • My buddy Trevor has been trying to get me into these guys for years. This is my reaction video for Secret Chiefs 3 Renunciation. This is live from the Australian TV show "Recovery" in 1998.
Apparently this is off of their 1998 album Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws: Hurqalya.
Thanks for watching and take good care,
    Colin

Faith No More came out of the same club scene as Thrash Metal & Hardcore Punk, Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica, And Testament shared stages, audiences with Dead Kennedies, Flipper & Faith No More…but also Primus and their Southern California friends, Fishbone and Suicidal Tendencies. You referenced Vancouver and I laughed a little…The Courtney Love, Faith No More, Hole, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Bikini Kill, Bad Brains, Death, Rough Francis, The Armed, Beastie Boys, Luscious Jackson nexus has no end…but part of it is routed in the Pacific Northwest, via Eureka, CA and Mr. Bungle…from there we get to Faith No More…and from there to Secret Chiefs 3…who also connect in Deiselhed, Estradouspher, Dunge Fever…and of course there is the John Zorn, Hank Williams III, Tomahawk, Melvins, Helmet, Fantomas, Peeping Tom, Le Butcherette, The Roots, Jill Scott…somewhere bringing us back to Bjork, a fish, and Joe Satriani…so Van Halen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s all one scene. Ask Anthrax and Public Enemy. Scott Ian of course playing with this guitarist in Tokyo the other night.

This show was brilliant…they would have all these amazing underground bands from all over the world, that happened to be touring Australia, play live and do interviews. This show had a very low budget but the producers made the most of what they had. It ran for about 5 yrs and was on every Saturday morning. There was no other show like it anywhere in the world.
Re: SC3. The reason there are so many musicians in the band is because most of their music is highly complicated. With many different instruments needed for their overall sound. This band did and still does have an intense underground following. You don’t get it because it’s not mainstream music, it’s not meant for the masses…which is a good thing.

Thank you for the info about the show. I miss stuff like this being on TV where a young person could stumble across it and expand their musical horizon. To say that I don't get it because its not "mainstream" doesn't really mean anything TBH.
I like plenty of music that falls well outside that generalization and have covered a lot of it on the channel. If I were to be a bit more musically critical I would say that this song is the sonic equivalent of a toddler packing a suitcase- there's a random assortment of everything and no complete outfits. The music is not overly complex (observe the bass for example) and the song starts and stumbles without ever really finding a consistent groove.
Obviously just my opinion and I would love a recommendation of a further song or video by these guys to change my mind.
On another note, what is mainstream these days. There's so much music and ways to find it but it can be a confusing task. I kinda yearn for the days where something like this would just be on Saturday morning.
Thank you for stopping by and take good care.

At this point in time, Secret Chiefs 3 was basically Mr. Bungle without Mike Patton.

SC3 is sort of the more consistent gig of Trey Spruance who is the guitar player & one of the primary composers for Mr. Bungle. I believe he is more or less the sole composer for SC3. The lo-fi is because I’m guessing this is a VHS rip from 1998. This song comes from Book M which is where they really started to get their feet under them imho.
They’re an interesting beast. They actually began as a 3 piece but are currently made up of iirc 7 “satellite bands” that all have their own super specific vibes. Some of it is more surf influenced, some more death metal, some sort of electronic-based, one is heavily influenced by giallo film I think etc. Personally I prefer the Ishraqiyun stuff which tends to be occult influenced.
If you want to give them a better shot maybe try the track The 7 which is a bit more consistent. But honestly they’re kind of one of those bands your either dig or don’t pretty quickly. If you’re not able to get into stuff like Bungle, Naked City, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum etc SC3 probably won’t really do it for you either.
