Wow that thrust indicator in the upper left really helped understand what your doing. Best tutorial.
15:32 that boost flip and slide into place behind the python is a really nice move, I'll have to change my "fighter plane flying physics" This just is so much better...
Agreed - would love to see and hear more from @Vindicator Jones on this flip maneuver.
Helicopters is space is pretty fun
@Lucas Donovan don't EVER Do that its a Scam or Hack Fishing site
@Asa Wilson Don't its a scam Bot... I have seen it and have had 3 youtuber warn me its a HACK bot
This video was exceptional. Being able to see the thrust you were using as well as observing how it affected your being able to hold onto your target was very helpful. Thanks!
I’ve been playing elite dangerous for a week (don’t know what I’ve been doing with my life) and have scoured youtube videos to mitigate my learning curve. This is by far the best video I’ve come across in terms of tutorial style. Professional, highly informative and sooooooo useful. Thanks so much.
just came back to say this has been the single most impactful combat tutorial i have seen for this game. totally changed it for me, i think this will be a great stepping stone to get into FA off. thank you
almost 3 years since you made these videos and it's still helping new cmdrs like me, thank you cmdr! o7
OMG. I just founnd your videos on YT today and i am speechless. I am playing for about 60 hours now and never have i ever use vertical and horizontal trusters in combat. FA was a button i never touch once in the playtime. It's like a whole new world just opens up for me. :D Thanks. And by the way, your videos are awesome. Really well done.
I've watched some of your other videos on using thrusters. I have a dedicated joystick just for thrusters, but I was having trouble knowing if I was doing it correctly. I just want to say THANK YOU for making a video with the thruster directional indicator. It helped tremendously, as have your other vids.
Excellent work. This one has earned my sub by itself. Great set of "commandments" at the end there. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Your videos have been my main source of combat research as well as the videos you have recommended from other channels. Thank you so much for giving a new player like me the confidence to try out combat.
Great video, since I watched your video, my combat skills have improved so much, it’s so much easier to keep the advantage in a fight now.
Hey thank you for making this video! Really made a difference. Before I used to do that circle chase with every ship. Now I am out turning Vipers and Eagles in an Asp :D
17:40 onwards:
01. keep our throttle in the blue.
02. put more pips in to engines for more manoeuvre-ability
03. manage pips to adapt to the current situation
04. watch (enemy's) engine trails and thrusters (especially for reverse turns)
05. do not over use the boost system
06. initiate combat from behind (when possible)
07. don't over commit yourself (don't go into hazardous resource sites and attack an Anaconda wing and an Eagle and expect to survive)
08. use local security ships as wing men (stay close to them)
09. don't be afraid to run, regroup, reacquire and re-engage. When shields have dropped run and use the asteroids for cover
10. don't give up, never surrender (don't get andry at the NPCs and try to learn from your mistakes)
.
ty for the video and please keep uploading.
Thank you much for making this video. After watching you fly with the thruster indicator I now can understand some of what you are doing when taking on large targets in a smaller ship
Best video about thruster use on the internet! Great job!
Thanks cmdr for your well thought out video. This gets an aspiring combat pilot further.
Best combat guide I've seen. You really helped me understand what I'm doing wrong.
Really glad I could help :) thanks for the feedback
Today I practiced your advises on pirates. I was able to take town 6 of them, including Python! Earned nice 375k credits from bounties as well. Before, I was doing so bad that single Eagle was enough to blow up my Asp Explorer. So I avoided fight at all costs limiting myself only to trading and exploring.
Awesome video. Very clear and great demonstrations. Thank you.
As usual Mr Jones another splendid vid choc full of top advice. love your stuff mate, keep it coming you've been a bit quiet of late. 😉
It makes me laugh every time you sit on top of that Ananconda xD
Great video, it helped me a lot with my little Viper. Thank you
Awesome content commander. Nice to see the mistakes left in for combat rookies like me.
your thrusting changed my life 😘
I'M On PS4 and currently limited to up /down thrust and yaw on left stick but I've found the effect on my not dying a lot is still amazing. thank you.
I'll try substituting left /right for yaw and see how I get on also but if it's rubbish I easily roll + up /down thrust.
I find boost/full down thrust helps get back behind enemies when they've slipped >600m away and reverse turning on you 😎 - your trick with boost thrusting around asteroids helped me with that. 😯
Also, as the cops often seem to ignore enemy wings, I briefly shoot one wing ship and boost away, just to initiate the interest of the sheriff, and then return to join in once everyone's at it.
For those with PS4 controllers I've set 'x + dpad up/down' as subtarget select so I can quickly target the ships power generator and x+dpad left /right as contact select
R2+dpad as chaff, missile defence, shield boost etc, coz I'm usually shooting when I need them.
R1/L1 throttle with R1+L1 as 50% (you stay in the blue zone)
L3 as boost
I find My biggest wtf moments are when I stray out of the blue zone on throttle and become a sitting duck, fail to add pips to engines against the more agile enemies or allowing too much distance by not managing either pips or throttle, forgetting I don't have an immortal shield, and that running away until it recharges is smart.
to engage left and right thrust just click the left stick to enable alt flight and that will replace yaw with left and right thrusters. just click left stick again to enable yaw and return to standard flight controls.
Julian Turner mmh interesting. sounds a bit dodgy 😀, but might be the least worst option. I'm also thinking of trying right stick as 'yaw into roll ' with just thrusters on left stick. I'll give it a go and see.
Richard Frow you dont have to change controls in the setting lol.
hahaha yes i realise xD.
that would be a little bit awkward .
+Richard Frow
I don't have elite on ps4 (i dont have a ps4 ~:)
(disclaimer I have had every other playstation up until the PS3... and couple of xboxes too :)
I really feel for the guys playing elite on consoles.. the lack of buttons disturbs me ;)
are there menu rings or something to access all ship systems?
I've been looking for a vid or any good info showing how it controls on consoles but can't seem to find any.
I have played elite dangerous since beta on pc. (I use an x52 pro HOTAS tho so i kinda have it easy when it comes to binding buttons)
thinking of the dual shock i'd set it up something like this (i've no idea how customizable it is)
pitch and roll on right analogue. (or left if you're left handed)
thrust (all directions) on left analogue.
yaw on L1 + R1
power diversion on the dpad
FULL thruster control is essential to fly any ship in elite.
how many buttons does that leave?
not bashing consoles or anything but i just don't see how it all fits on a regular controller?
obviously they have made it work somehow but i just can't seem to find the info can somebody pitch in with as bit of info on how you access menus and stuff. (im just interested to know how frontier pulled it off :)
my x52 has 23 buttons, three 8-way hat switches (think d-pads) and 7 control axes, (dials and sliders) and a mini mouse controller.
I have every single one of them bound to something in Elite. (and there's still some controls left over that I had to bind to the keyboard)
guess my advice is do yourself a favour and much pulling of hair and buy a hotas for your ps4 :).
(the thrustmaster t-flight hotas is only 50 bucks and is ps4 compatible.)
the difference a hotas makes to elite is indescribable until you try it.
it's a fantastic game and you deserve to be playing it with a proper flight controller the way it was designed to be played.
Great video and Top 10 Tips. Well done and a big thumbs up.
You're a real pro! I just bought the game, I am practicing in training mode. It's really hard to execute it like you do. But you are fantastic! Amazing video!
I will say this is pretty solid advice. lately ive been using fa-off, trying to learn it and so far so good! Regardless its important (whenever you are a fa-on or fa-off pilot) you use your lateral and vertical thrusters. believe me, it can dictate life or death in some situations, and give you the advantage at times. It's always best to stay behind your target no matter your skill level. And always know when to bail out. I don't care what you call me. If i cant win i will try to run, nine times out of ten I make it out alive anyways. Really good video, Keep them going :)
speaking of bailing out, when you do bail from the fight, face enemy, put 4 pips to engines and boost passing them. That way they will waste precious seconds to turn around and you might be able to get out of their weapons range. You will also get few extra sec on your FSD charge...
Great video Vindicator.
"Never give up, never surrender"
I see what you did there.
never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
@@kato2395 You're in for a treat:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Quest
4 years and this is still the best video example of using thrust. It's amazing the difference in someone's combat performance with or without thrusters.
I learned A LOT from this video. TYVM! =)
This is how an instructional vid should be, very well done. Thanks! Gonna apply your wisdom now ;-)
Been playing E:D for a while, but have been avoiding fighting other ships... Just couldn't handle the mechanics. Your guides on fighting mechanics (especially this video) are exactly what I was looking for. Went to an extraction site and killed several ships, and it was 100 times easier than before. Thanks a TON! You're wonderful :3
Been watching your videos I have seen changes in my viper 3 following your info. Thanks
Thanks for the bonus 10 combat tips at the end, really helped a noob like me
Been playing for a month on PS4 and i didnt even know about using thrusters in combat. Now that i watched your tutorial it was like i was fighting with one arm tied behind my back. Thanks for making my bounty hunts faster, easier and more profitable!!!
This is awesome. Thank you very much for the help. I almost blew up my controller because I kept dying.
Finally I figured out what I'm doing wrong. THANK YOU SO MUCH! AWESOME VIDEO!
Glad it could help! thanks for all your awesome feedback.
i started with the 101 combats tips part 1 and 2. Thanks for the help
great video man!!
Enormously helpful video! Thanks!
Glad it could help! thanks for the feedback
Great video, thanks!
"Good ideas to go and try" mission accomplished, thankyou!
Has anyone else found that, in order to perform a tighter "pitch-up" turn in order to get back on the tail of a ship that's flown past you (or for any other reason), using an alternating combination of up and down thrusters to kind of push your nose up a bit and then your tail down a bit (or at least this is how I picture it) seems more effective than just using the up thruster alone? It's entirely possible that I'm imagining it.
You sir win a cigar.. you are absolutely correct, and this was something I was going to go through in my next video. Basically, if you first use down thruster and pull up hard, then half way through the turn alternate to up thruster, you will actually seem to turn faster towards your target. From what I can figure, you are altering your ships centre of rotation point (in relation to your enemy) further out in front of you, effectively allowing your ship to turn faster back onto your target.
Yay - Go me! Glad to hear it's not just my imagination. It would be really interesting to use the camera suite, get the camera sufficiently far away from the ship so that an entire loop fits within the frame, and then perform three separate loops (side on to the camera) - one without thrusters, one with just up thrusters and one with this alternating application of up and down thrusters. You could then use some kind of long exposure technique (or simply composite together screengrabs from a bunch of different stills) to trace out the different trajectories taken. You'd hopefully see a tighter circle in the latter but you might also see an interesting, non-circular shape that reveals more about what's going on.
I have tried this, numerous times on my own.. and just couldnt get it all in frame
But, I will try and do an animation of how it works in the next vid.
I play on PC with PS4 controller, and I think I stumbled onto this naturally. I started off just down thrusting as I pitched up, and found that I was also increasing my distance from my target. By switching to thrust up in the middle of my turn, I was able to maintain my distance.
great video, really helpful
I just started my main move is going full speed then going in reverse and throwing the nose up I’ve learnt so many more ways I can do it with thrusters now thank you
Tip number 10 was the best one, i was about to throw the towel
Having gotten back into playing Elite after being gone for a while, I got decent in combat for PVE when I last played but I wouldnt say good.. Noticed that im garbage now and have no idea what im doing.
This will help me out for sure, After watching your video it dawned on me that I used to use thrusters like this all the time, But not at all recently. I would even turn off flight assist off, Which can make a huge impact on how well you can stay aimed at your target.
After this I believe after getting used to flying in combat like this I think I will improve significantly especially since I have much better combat ships available to me, Thanks!
Hello Jones, thank you for the informative video! Would you be so kind and share your control scheme/layout? It would be much appreciated.
“Point your thrusters behind the target.” I’ve read about using thrusters to tighten your turns, but couldn’t really grasp it until you gave such simple, intuitive advice.
hey thanks a lot for the tips
Super helpful thank you
best tutorials Good JOB
7:34 - Hi there im from the (wtf does he even say) would you like to learn the truth from the good book?
I think he said "Sublime Order of Van Maanen's Star", a theocratic faction.
i died when he said that... especially the 'nope? mm, ok...'
exquisite!
Thanks for this video. I'm playing on PS4 with controller at the moment and I find it hard for me to do advanced maneuvering in the heat of a battle and I tend to avoid more difficult engagements. But I ordered Hotas 4 joystick and I hope it will help me with that.
great video thx
Hey! Thanks for the guide! Its awesome! I have a question for you. Do you use HOTAS? If yes, can you please share your bindings? I use thrustmaster t.flight hotas x and i dont really understand where to put horizontal thrusters without holding additional button :( Thank you in advance!
Hey man, great video as always, I don't suppose you have a link to your viper build? I have to shut off half my systems before I go into combat. Need to find that sweet balance.
I've got this on ps4. Would it be worth sacrificing yaw for left and right thrust?
Thank you very much. This video cleared up slot. I have been wondering how bogeys were turning on me so quickly. Can you make a 3rd person view vid of how to pull of this manuver effectively. I've been trying a 0 thrust turn manuver, but it's not combat effective because targets get out of range and turn on you 75% of the time.
Yeah i was getting mashed up thinking it was standard dogfighting. Thanks a lot, I'll go practice
Vindicator Jones has some really good combat tips; thrust me...
Proper use of lateral and vertical thrust is what separates men from the boys, as they say :)
I used to be rubbish at it, simply locking into a ww2 fighter in space kind of playstyle. Which it kind of is in ED. However, once use of thrusters becomes second nature to you so many new tactics and possibilities open for you. Ships you could not fly because of their perceived bad maneuverability suddenly become faster and more controllable, and maneuverable ships become ballet dancers defying laws of physics :)
Just curious but your using standard flight controls correct? Also I can’t seem to stay that close like you do to them. Practice? Lastly do you circle faster (I apologize for not using proper terminology) by going up with up thrusters or down thrusters? I can’t seem to tell.
Hi, can I ask about ship appearance at 26s, is it part of FDL ship kit from store? (found,it is ... only on shop page it is not so clearly shown)
On my XBox 360 controller I have to switch between normal and alternate flight controls where one type allows right/left motion on the right thumbstick to control lateral yaw and one where it controls lateral thrusters. Would you say in combat the lateral thrusters are more important than yaw ("turning the ship sideways")?
Thank you for this. You remind me of Ozzy Man by the way. Especially on 7:34. Hahaha.
Thanks :)
Very, very helpful! Thanks. I'm still getting my behind handed to me in the training missions, but not nearly so much.
Those training missions are vicious... dont worry if you cant do them!
Yeah, bounty-hunting at a nav-beacon with lots and lots of local security ships is a peace of cake compared to even the basic combat scenario.
Its good to watch and i am learning abit, but im surprised people are not using there thrusters more, i use them alot just for landing and moving round npc's when they get in the way
How are you controlling pitch, yaw, roll, throttle AND directional thrusters (on axis) so smoothly? I have a hotas and a second joystick but only two hands!
Do you have a video that explains how you've bound your controls? I'm guessing you're using a HOSAS setup and I'm going to be switching to that soon and would like to know how to properly bind my thrusters.
What control setup are you using? HOTAS? Dual stick? And where do you have your thrusters bound?
Hi, do you have left/right and up/down thrusters on one thumbstick? I'm using left/right on the left one, and up/down on right stick.
I made the no-thrusters mistake my first couple days playing. At first I couldn't figure out why I sucked so bad at fighting (coming from stuff like War Thunder in the past, which I was pretty good at). Then it clicked, "Wait, I'm in SPACE, the same rules don't apply". Then everything fell into place.
I still suck at fighting though, I'm still pretty new to the game and just don't have the right things yet to solo enemies.
I've played since December, spending most of my time trading or exploring. Over the past couple of weeks I've been unlocking all the engineers and outfitting a nice Python, having only played around with the starter ships in easy res sites 8 months ago before., I've been wondering why it has been so difficult, with a blinged out ship.. now I know why.. Thanks Jonesy!
Glad it could help!! cheers :)
I think I'm clear on when to use left/right and up/down thrusters, but not so much on forward/back thrusters. Any advice? Thanks
Great vid, realised I'm not been using my thrusters at all, oh dear lol
Hey Jones - excellent video. I am returning to the game from a year long hiatus and I am learning to fly again. I noticed you were able to do a kill warrant scan while you fired lasers, then without changing weapon groups started firing canons. Can I ask how you setup your weapon groups to allow this?
Hi there and welcome back. All you need to do is bind your KWS to your primary fire trigger. :) so when your firing, your also scanning.
Very helpful info i took to it like fish to water
Massive improvement in my combat thanks to you sir
Can you please link me to where you got your color setup for your cockpit?
Is there going to be a follow up to this? Or am I not seeing it in the uploads?
What is your control setup like. Are you pushing like six buttons on your keyboard at a time to be able to thrusters. I found that a steam controllers easier than the keyboard for me
how do you get the thruster widget for the Hat control?
I created it as a HTML overlay in OBS.. its a bit of a pain to setup, but basically I use this page, then custom edit it in OBS.. gamepadviewer.com/
I get down thrust to sharpen your turn, but I don't get the upthrust part. Nor do I really understand what the benefit to using side thrusters over just standard yawing is, quite yet, but...then again, I don't have a damn HOTAS either, so flying with a damn mouse has ensured I don't understand much of anything.
Also, when you tried to boost but couldn't. What's the advantage of a boost turn in a tight fight like that? Every time I boost turn I extend like a mother.
I'm trying to do the same as you, but everytime i tap the thrusters even slightly, the ship stops autocorrecting its velocity according to nose direction and soon i'm flying backwards and then it decelerates and stops right in front of enemy's guns. Basically tapping the thrusters feels like disabling flight assist for the pitch axes. Also it feels like when i hold any lateral thrusters button, the forward thrusters are off and it does not accelerate forward, which always gets me stuck far away from target and he reverses on me. To me the thrusters cause more harm and i learned not to use them because then it's easier to stay on enemy's tail.
Was there a patch that changed how the thrusters behave or i'm just doing it wrong?
Great top 10 list at the end encouraging too overambitious commanders to first practise the basics before trying to cope with experts in the big ships. Masters are made. By hard work. No one is born a master.
Is the thruster indicator a setting? That sounds very useful to display.
Assassination missions are my bread and butter (over 2 billion credits) and I owe a lot of it to you. Using your earlier video of your thruster control I learned to throw small ships around larger Conda's and Fed Corv ships. Just put your nose in his belly button and with thrusters stay perpendicular (90 degrees) to him with guns blazing. The FDL and the Krait are excellent for this. Two pips to thrusters and 4 to weapons.
Almost getting raped by an Asp Scout in my A Rated Vulture brought me here. Destroyed him, but my Ship was trashed and had to limp back to base for repairs. I was flying it like a fighter jet. No consideration for thrusters or reverse flight. Probably also explains why my Type-10D almost bankrupted me. Thankfully, I didn't sell it.
This and the previous video _completely_ changed the way I fight. Went out half hour later and was mopping up.
Thanks matey :)
Novice Fighter, Elite Explorer. PVE Only.
Its a common mistake, but I am glad my videos helped you out. Its great getting this kind of feedback. Thanks!
I kind of would have liked if you showed the movement of both thruster and flight stick to really know how they two work in conjunction. Maybe even do a pause before each application of thrust and flight stick together like doing a play by play for one dogfight.
When you say "thrusters" are you talking about your up/down, left/right or traditional thrust (rear facing thrusters)?
The first real combat tutorial I've seen. Most of them are "buy this ship and max out all the combat stuff then pew pew"
This maybe a stupid question: while using the thrusters, do you cut your throttle? Try to keep it in the blue (while slowing down or speeding up to match your enemy)?
On Xbox. Clicking the left stick changes the thrusters, or the control style i think. Seems to change the lateral thrusters so they turn the ship like a car, instead of a direct left or right thrust. It's good in super cruise, but not sure how it effects what your saying here in terms of lateral thrust.
Really need to get myself a flight stick.
how do you get the thruster indicator widget?
I can't find those matte black liveries in the market, did you get them somewhere, or you created them with an editor? (dumb question, I know there are almost NO editors around, but this design is mind-blowing anyway
The Matte Black skins were a special skin they released a while ago for black friday. I think they occasionally put them in the store periodically, but I cant remember to be honest.
5 hours into Elite. How do I add that Thruster thing you have in the upper left so I know if I'm using thrusters or not
Amazing advice @Vindicator Jones. What are your keybindings for movement? Always looking to improve. Mine is W for up, S for down thrust, A/D for left right thrust respectively, Space for boost, Q/E for L & R Yaw, And mouse roll for incremental accelertation/Deceleration. Mouse for yaw and pitch.
I use HOTAS.. I tried keyboard and mouse once, and I kept slamming into the station.. hahahaa
I am using the "shooter-Setting" and it works well: W= Forward, S=Backward, Q/E=Rolling, c=up, Space=Down, A/D=Sides, Mousewheel to set the speed, Arrows up for maxSpeed, Down for full stop (u dont use this in fights) - I manage my Pips with VoiceAttack, while Fighting, so Pips are on NumPad, Mouse also for yaw/pitch
How do I use the Q in my firegroup on Xbox. I heard its a quickslot but i dunno how to use it
There are three type's of thruster's, one of which is one which propel's you forward, another which only work's in witch space only, are those that allow the movement of the entire ship in ahorizonal and or verical motion. Basically move the entire ship, left, right, up, down. YAW is a different thruster which work's in both witch space and supercrusie. It allow's when moving forward or at full stop's to rotate the entire ship to the left or to the right; Not up and down. A player can engineer the Forward thruster's but the horizonal, verical and yaw thruster's are not available to either upgrade or engineer.
Very interested in your combat tutorials, VJ! Thanks!
I have a serious problem with bots u-turning. Even following your advice and generally doing same things shown here - thrusting towards hostile`s tail, throttle to mid when maneuvering and so on, bots, even huge ass clippers, get a free drop on me almost every time. Even worse NPCs tend to chain these one after another, or so it seems. Honestly, i`m starting to detest that "new" combat.
Using x-52 joy and Viper similar to yours for training purposes.
If i can make a request - can you explain mechanics of reverse turn (yes i know bots cheaty as all hell) and how to counter it effectively.
Or may be i`m just dumb.
NPC's dont cheat, they are just much more better at utilizing thrusters and reverse thrust than you at the moment! lol, dont worry about it, seriously, it takes time learning how to fluidly use thrusters and FAOFF in combat. You are not dumb, you are not bad, so dont let it get to you too much.
But let me be clear, there is no counter to targets that reverse thrust on you, you have to adapt to the situation and decide do you face tank and try and get in close, or boost behind them, and try and flip around.. It's why the elite dangerous combat system is so good, there is no one way to defeat your opponent, and sometimes you are completely outclassed, and thats how it should be, otherwise it all just becomes too easy, and combat just becomes a standard set of sequences.
Is it frustrating? Yes.. does it feel like they are cheating sometimes?? GOD YES.. But dont give up, it will get easier in time.
