Elite Dangerous Ground Assault and settlement infiltration

- G'day guys,
Today I am going to go through how to attack a surface settlement, and show you, what I think, is the best load out for the job.
Here is the build I am using for the Federal Gunship

Thanks to everyone who watched!
Technically, this is what a Gunship is for, so it's nice to see that it's good at it at least.
Ahhh. This comment and video have both aged very well XD
it's like calling a shark stupid and weak because it can't climb a tree
"the gunship is bad because when I try to use it in a dogfight it sucks"
Omg the federal gunship is actually great when used as a GUNSHIP!!! Thank you Horizons!!!
this build reminds me of that clone transport from star wars
why do you think its called the LAAT?
It'd be interesting if like as a last resort, some soldiers come out of the base wearing space suits and start shooting at your ship/srv.
is a penal colony, soldiers cost too much, just send the convicts.
Hopefully in Odyssey..
That’s probably gonna be a thing in Odyssey. If there is going to be on foot combat, there’s no better place than planetary bases.
holy shit you have predicted odyssey
Thank you so freakin much man, you know how hard this type of mission is for someone unprepared and over confident in the ship they're running, and wind up loosing too much to make the mission even profitable.
I used the Dropship for this, it was so suiting in my eyes and i loved it
I've watched a lot of tutorial vids for ED but you are very good at communicating through the tutorial about what to be watching for and what to do.
I've been doing this wrong all along. I landed my ship 3kms away and cruised up in my SRV, scanned the data point and hauled ass back to my ship. My SRV shields will drop every once in a while, but I've never lost one.
Zide?
@@Derkiboi Yup 👍
taking out the base defenses is one thing, but what about the endless onslaught of system security ships that keep dropping in? THEY JUST KEEP COMING
Load slf with gimbled beams. They do really good at keeping npc at day.
Now that most bases also have air support, what would you do differently (loadout and tactics)?
Loved the out take...it's real 😀...that's how I roll at the moment...I'm doing base runs in my cobra...started badly, we all do, but after a few rebuts we soon learn 👍..nice vid Jonesy
What if theres an air patrol?
Great video Jonesy. Looking forward to having a go at these surface missions now. I've not been to a surface site since my first week in Elite! o7
Built this thing it's a damn riot to play and very effective.
So it still works then? I've never done a ground assault mission and wasn't sure if this build still works considering the age of this video. I'll have to try it out sometime as well.
@@Hawk_of_Battle yes and listen very carefully if you do it exactly like he details is amazingly fun. I had never done ground missions and I did probably a dozen after I built this it was so much fun. Matter of fact I think I'll get on later and ground pound some Stuff lol.
right, but that doesn't work at all, so no. The missiles don't even cause damage.
@@tohkai1959 well i would respectfully disagree I have had enourmous fun and success with this exact build. Sorry it didn't work out for you I love it.
@@kenpontious7633 Yeah, but again, that's not true, as pointed out by everyone else, missiles don't damage structures anymore.
Stuff like this is what makes me really want to be able to leave my ship. Imagine being able to load up your ship with a few friends, doing this and then being able to infiltrate the base. I can't think of any reason to do so off the top of my head other than maybe raiding a base for whatever valuables they have in there, but I can just imagine how fun it would be.
nice video, for the srv driving, disable driving assist. driving with it on is ok for long distances, but manoeuvring and turning with it on is not very intuitive. I once drove my srv into a deep hole because of it, wondering why I was driving backward when pressing throttle forwards. it's a bit like cruise control, you don't use it when parking your car.
Setup and know your controls. im driving SRV with my joystick and dont have such problems like on the video above. Crashing into walls etc.
This is the guide I've always been waiting for! Good job :)
because I like him calm demeanour style of talking, plus informative.
great loadout and i wouldn't have seen the message at all!!!
Yeah have been trying out point defence but didnt think of dumbfire missiles!! And its a good excuse to buy a FGS, keep up the amazing work dude
Frontier really, REALLY need to find a way to make the surface buildings look covered in a bit of dust all over, and a lot of dust where they meet the ground. The buildings looks so awkward, unreal and clean at the moment.
+Ben Leighton Actually, I have been thinking this exact same thing. They need to dirty up the textures that are closer to the surface areas, so there is more of a realistic transition. I think with some of the more bigger and richer settlements, they can remain relatively clean, wheras the smaller, more "budget" settlements can be really dirty and dusty...
+Vindicator Jones Indeed. Because whilst these planets have no atmosphere to blow dust around, the ships taking off and landing, and even the rovers, visibly throw up a lot of dust. And then after the dust is on the buildings, there is of course no atmosphere to ever blow it off again. I'm kind of surprised it got past Frontier's QA how it is at the moment. Hopefully they'll improve it soon. Not that I can afford Horizons anyways, but still :-)
+Vindicator Jones they remain clean because of the shield scrubbing, the field's direction pushes dust to the side. the wrecks are dirty because no shields to scrub the surface, if that makes sense. [buildings have 10 times more power than a ship so the fields are very strong]
OMG YES!
No. They won't, and I for one also wouldn't want them to do this, since there's no atmosphere and thus there's also no wind to blow dust around. That's how it looks like in a vacuum on planets and moons. This is not an earthling's desert. Or otherwise you also couldn't fly your ship there if there was an atmosphere to move sand in the first place. So, either you want dust being blown around, or you want to be able to go there with your ships designed to fly only in no atmosphere environment. You can't have both in a space sim.
Edit: Btw, the moon landing sceptics also wanted to have found fault with the lack of dust on the lunar module's pedestals. This is just not happening in a vacuum. Whatever dust is blown up instantly falls back down where it came from. It doesn't travel around like on earth. ;) Those structures could stay there for hundreds of years and would still be as clean as from the year dot. Well done, Frontier!
Nice one Jonesy. Those missions have always been a bit of a mystery to me, and advice of how to do them on the forums is lackluster at best.
The Quality of your Vids hell nice.... keep working
Always wanted to have a reason to but a FDS, thanks!
Nice one, thank you. You obviously have the right stuff, as your flying is great - but it looked like you were just keeping the pedal to the metal a bit too much with the driving. :) Extra kudos for not editing out your mistakes.
+000Angus000 Oh totally... I am being silly on the ground and just going nuts.... Its just silly fun, even if it means I screw up a lot.. I dont pretend to be mr perfect.. I do many stupid things, if you cant laugh at yourself, then really wants the point.. lol
absolute ace pilot..seen your other vids surprising yoi cant drive srv though Jonesy! 😛
Actually since 2.1 I have point defense on my ship no matter what, because in RES zones. there's also a lot of missiles and torpedoes flying around.
It must be quite a show watching that bombardment with rockets and beams from the ground
exactly what I needed to watch
I think we've finally found a use for the dropship
Pretty sure that this is going to become a really popular video in the next few months
in my experience steady driving with the srv helps a lot
that was a very good demo - thanks
Great tips and recommendations thanks!✌👽
Excellent Video!
my ideal setup is running a cobra mk 3 with all dumb fire rockets and I have a buddy helping me with this one. Then I just basically do rocket runs go back and forth.
Nice. Didnt even know we could do that. Thanx. Great vid!
Nice driving!
Great driving. 😁
A quicker way is to land just outside the perimeter and dismiss the ship so it waits in orbit
Go do your scan, and it is sent to the ship immediately. You can then flee without shooting anything and recall the ship. Or you can let them blow you up and you end up back in the ship in orbit.
Or if tour ship is strong enough and the settlement isn’t too protected , just fly up to the station, stick the nose of the ship into the beacon zone and scan.
Wow. No lie man, this actually is a big help. I can only wonder if this will help now that Odyssey is out.
I've been attempting a base assult this week with not much sucess. The base has multiple ships as well as all the ground weapons, skimmers, and at leat 2 goliaths. To add to that finding data points is like hunting a needle in a haystack, and I get less than a minute to find the next data point, while being fired on. Arrrggghhhhh!!!
You should probably consider pinning a comment to the top of the thread explaining about the changes to how bases work.
lol... nice vid loving the shipbuild
I want that goliath as a kind of recon vehicle (which you could carry kinda like an SLF, but only in a larger SRV)
Can't wait for Horizons to come to Xbone.
Excellent!
Thanks for the tips. Had a good laugh at the expense of your driving "skills."
Here in 2021 looking for ship builds. I think we have a winner! This one might be even more relevant considering Odyssey is coming soon (tm). Stay safe CMDRs o7
Hi VJ, loved your combat tutorials then came across this and was inspired to have a go so built a FGS to your build and had a go. Great difficulty finding heavily armed settlements with missions without air support, which this ship isn’t specc’d to deal with. Found one but it made my misfile launchers ineffective with loads of surface launched point defence. Have these missions been nerfed since you did this (4 years is a long time)? Would love it if you could do a similar tutorial updated for any changes that Fdev have done to the meta. Cheers.
I have always wanted to revisit this with an effective build... Its been challenging to find a new one that works effectively with the changes that were made by Fdev.. If I do find anything, then I will re-do the video :)
I actually stumbled upon this video while looking for a way to deal with settlements. Sadly, FDev nerfed missile damage against most installations to hell, so using any ship at all is very ineffective.
Had the same issue, anti missile surface batteries shot all my missiles and a police ship appeared shortly after i engaged the settlement. High tail it out of there and abandon mission. Thing is i used to do this type of missions with a build described by VJ and worked like a charm ... seems is not now! Good thing FD is looking in nerfing mining cause every other activity in the game is quite lucrative .. sigh!
Since the changes I’d spend the time unlocking pack-hound missiles to neutralise the effectiveness of ground point defences, I’d engineer them for high capacity to have plenty of ammo. Would also bring a SLF and order it to defend your ship to keep the air support busy while you are attacking the settlement.
Great video! I've given up on surface runs because I simply get wiped all the time, but after this I might give it another go. What sort of build would you recommend for a Viper MkIV? I'm not going to try a Level 3 base with it, but I could go after smaller bases with lesser defences....
Getting some ace combat vibes from this
So, the Federal Gunship is good in the role of an actual gunship. Who would have guessed? ;)
Well I know what I will be doing once I have finished the engineer upgrades for the 'conda :) Now do this with a wing/multicrew ah if only
Great video!
Now we’re in 2.4, what is the real difference / changes to this suggested approach?
Informative AND entertaining! :)
“All too easy” 😆
Try turning the drive assist off on the srv. Made it a lot eqasier for me :)
A gun ship being used as a gun ship. WOW!
Make some Aliens or other Lifeforms on habitable Planet´s for some shooting action.
I have seen something in the videos and its looking great . Keep it in an Interesting way. I mean not in the beginning
Really helpful thanks - cmdr Neltek
i tested it with a friend, if you drop cargo containers while flying they are grabbed by gravity rather realistically... which made me think... OMG i would LOVE to have a BOMBER ship!!
wouldnt it be cool if there were slfs designed for atmosphere/ground assault that control like a plane?
I know this is really necro, but couldn't you use mines like bombs? @xXE4GLEyExX
@@doknemo2620 You can indeed.
Great vidéo thanks for the technics
u got a sub mate. great videos
Excellent video, nice work coming up with a build that sounds initially nuts but works!
Just one thing - if you're planning to go out for a drive could you announce it beforehand please, preferably in writing. ;)
+Chris Sargent Whats your commanders name?? hmmm putting it on my kill on sight list.. LOL XD
I really need to spend more time in that goddamn SRV... hehehe
Turn off assist fir your SRV its much easier
First I would say I never even thought of attacking a planetary base and secondly, why? What do you get out of it? Other than notoriety and bounties?
will this work with the 3.0.3 update to skimmer missions?
Feels like playing Desert Strike (1992)
Would gimballed weapons work as well versus the turrets and sentries/Goliath?
I wonder if a loadout like this would be useful as gunship support for ground units in odyssey.
Turn assistance off with your srv, much easier to drive without constant cruise control!
Subbed, and you rock.
Hi there, I am returning to game after a long time. Is this guide still viable or have they done some balancing since then that would devaluate some bits? Thank you.
Have you made some deal with Satan that allows you to re-enter your ship from your SRV when, as far as I could see, there was no way you were properly aligned underneath. Am I missing something regarding this? Anyway, love the video, you make it look easy.
Question: So, why would you ever want to or need to attach a camp or ground base? Wouldn't this make you wanted and then you have to pay fines?
Big black ;)
Still good for surface tasks?
What kind of missles can take out shields? o_O I need THOSE missles!
great help! :) what would you suggest for an Imperial officer? ie. no access to Federal Gunship
Why drive the SRV at full throttle all the time?
because go
Can't wait to try this out in Odyssey. Do you reckon the DLC will change much in this regard?
14:40 You had better get back into the ship before you make an srv-sized dent in it. THAT would be hard to explain to the resident mechanic!!
so other than satisfaction what do you get from this?
Great video! How would you compare this gunship vs the assault ship in the same scenario as a ground attack ship?
+Bill Adams I think if you loaded the FAS with a single c3 Beam and the rest missiles, it would perform just fine. Gunhsip is pure overkill, but is probably the best role for the gunship as its performance in space is a bit lacklustre in my opinion.
+Vindicator Jones Thanks for the quick reply! I'm going to test this out in a gunship later tonight.. If an assault ship does just as well I might prefer that, since I like the assault ship more. I see what you mean though about gunship being best for this role regarding its other weaknesses. --So I was able to follow your video my only problem is I'm a missile newb. I had all missiles in same group but usually only one would fire at a time. Not sure what was up... Maybe I had seekers.. Anyway thanks again, going to return the gunship though and try with assault ship since its a bit more versatile. -Final update - So after doing this with a Federal assault ship, I have to say the Federal Gunship is a much better choice. I enjoy the Assault ship more overall, but the gunship is a better choice for this attack (and wow the gunship is fun in supercruise).
Good video, BUT, you're wasting a whole lot of missiles. When you target the defense turrets, you want to hit the GENERATOR in the middle of each battery. that takes out the whole thing. instead of shooting each one of them individually.
Think of your srv as a mountain goat.
Can't wait dor horizons on xbox one.
j adore tes videos merci!!! : )
Love the video, I had no idea this was even possible in Horizons. Looks like I should fit out my ship and actually try stuff. I was put off a bit because the first surface mission I got (data courier), I couldn't figure out how to do the transfer when I arrived at the tiny little surface outpost which was so small I couldn't even dock. Speaking of which, how are you scanning the comms tower? And how are you driving your SRV? When I first got into mine, I discovered that NONE of the keybindings were set, and when I did set them, the whole thing was backwards.
+Niels Albers Yeah, it takes a bit of time to set up the SRV... I might make this a video topic and go through the bindings, I had a LOT of trouble at first also. I just did a lot of trial and error, I am still refining the controls
+Vindicator Jones That would be great. You make really good videos, very clear and easy to follow.
Thanks mate, I really appreciate that. Its good to know these videos are helping SOME people at least.. lol
You talk about convergence with your two beam lasers, is there a damage bonus when this happens? I feel like gimbled would be better cause it seems you miss from time to time.
+Tristramdeliones Fixed weapons do a little more damage, but that is not why I am using them here. Using gimballed means you will end up hitting your target even less. Because the targets are so small, and you are firing at range, your weapons wobble will mean your hitting the target about 20% of the time. Especially when it comes to skimmers. Fixed works much better, especially at long ranges.
Vindicator Jones
Understood, thx for the reply. Subscribed too :).
So is at all profitable? What can you gain because I was looking to do something like this when I started like a month ago. I imagine this cant be done with a vulture.
Would you recommend trying this out with an imperial clipper?
I believe for anyone that feels it's annoying -
they can just mute it. It's not that hard in the options.
btw, did you do this as an overlay after recording the video, or is this a mod you added to the game like voice attack?
How exactly does Point defense activate? I have three on my ship but I only notice the ammo count drop once! Is it something you activate or is it automatic?
How do you bases that are gaurded by ships? If I attack ships more just pop in. Can't ignore them either or they blow your srv up eventually.
Yeah, some bases are really much harder to hit now. I did one base where I kept destroying ship after ship after ship, but more would just keep spawning in. Sometimes you can reset the instance by logging in and out, and there will be no ships, but its rare.
Fighter Hager
The best solution is to have a backup of 2 friends with anacondas or something like that
Great video. I really want to get into this without hurting my rep or betraying factions I have no real issue with (I know, I get way too crazy with morals in this game). Are there bases owned by various pirate factions or other groups up to no good to partake in these kinds of raids without consequence? Also, is there much money in doing this? I currently mine, trade and am about to start exploring. All I do combat wise is an occasional RES, and with how fucked up the mission system is I can't imagine it's easy to start bringing in the case for the bigger ships (Im in a Python) very quickly...
+hammer326 Honestly, I dont know of any other base. where you can use this system. There are pirate bases for sure, but none that I know of that allows you to do this kind of mission stacking. Yes, there is quite a lot of money to be made doing this. Each run for me is around 3-6 million, depending on how much I was able to stack.
Just going to say you can aim for the generators for the out turrets. This will say you the rebuy cost!
+Dexy205 BAH... I like firing missiles... lol
+Vindicator Jones I know it is fun haha
+Vindicator Jones I know it is fun haha
+Vindicator Jones I know it is fun haha
I wonder if I should buy a gunship/assault ship for this, or if I can just set up my corvette with dumbfires...?
The only criticism I have about this rather good video is that pinkish violet in your cockpit - it makes my toe nails want to separate from my toes...
I tried this but all my missiles are taken out by PD missiles from the base. Does this strategy not work anymore or am I doing something wrong?
How come he isn't getting a bounty assaulting the base? Every time I attack one I get a bounty. But sometimes when I kill skimmers I get a bounty CLAIM ?!
