Elite Dangerous FerDeLance Combat Tactics and Piloting Tips and Tutorials
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 авг 2024
- Hi everyone, here is my new video in the Fer De Lance series. Here I talk about combat tactics and piloting tips for the FDL. Sorry it took so long, but a LOT of work went into the video.
Because of the length of the video, I have only briefly discussed my thruster technique, as I felt , at the moment, it was only a small part to play in the video. However moving forwards, I might consider doing a complete video just on Thrusters and FAOFF techniques if it is requested. I might even consider doing a live stream on the subject if people are interested.
If you enjoyed this video or found it useful, please hit that like button and subscribe.
If you super dooper enjoyed it, and would like to help me out with a teenie weenie donation, please go to my channels home page and hit the support button on the right.

Thanks to everyone who watched!
I appreciate the time you take to make these videos, I find them most informative and fun to practice. thanks
Glad you enjoyed them. Thanks!
Still one of the best guides 5 years after release.
Very high quality production.
Great detailed rundown of the FDL :)
just thought i'd add something tho, at the 8:20 mark you talked about using your thrusters to do a turn faster, you can push this concept further by applying reverse and continuing to pull up, this makes for the fastest 180° turn you can get (to my knowledge anyway)
keep up the good work on the vids and happy hunting Cmdr
Venree nice idea, I will use this :)
I wonder if it is possible to exactly replicate FA-off maneuvers with manual thruster inputs? Or perhaps I should say it would be counteracting the thruster inputs FA does automatically to replicate FA-off...
Yes this is a great way to make up for going into a turn too fast aswell
It s nice to see that people are not actually running full FA off. For 2 weeks I thought ho the hell do you fight full FA off and gain anything out of it. And then I saw the video and realized everyone knows that.
Oh, the 'pendulum' effect you speak of is (I think) not so much a pendulum effect, but it's due to the ship not having to distribute its thrust to the vertical thrusters to maintain a nice curve. Basically: you're doing what an FA Off turn would do since you're drifting during your turn.
For some reason Flight Assist does not use the thrusters at max power when it uses them. It limits itself to staying within a certain speed (regardless of vector) so if you're turning and trying to accelerate forward it won't do so at full power until the non forward momentum has been negated.
If you are thrusting downwards you're pretty much telling flight assist to not bother negating that momentum at that time and (probably) using your upwards thrusters afterwards slows you down enough to get more in the 'blue' zone in regards to your vector.
I mostly noticed this in my Clipper when I started boosting with the downwards thruster engaged and pointing the nose at a 45 degree angle to my movement vector while having throttle set to 50% (blue zone center). The result was moving at a fast speed to my targeted location without losing the maneuverability bonus of the blue zone. This allows me to even get a fat Clipper behind another ship, and keep it there (well, most of the time anyway).
6 years old and this video is still one of if not the best fdl tactical vids out there
The only ship in the game that makes me feel like a Bond Villain
Holy shit this video was waaayyyy more in depth then I was expecting from a ship review, I'm now re thinking all my controls and I just wanted to see the ship in action! Fantastic vid !
These are super good tips man, especially from a pilot that went from vulture to FDL. Needless to say.. A bit of "culture shock"
Vulture shock
Thanks commander !!!
Great video. Excellent tactial review, - love your style very much.
And you right: it is completely different feeling to fly in FDL after python/FDS/Anaconda. For the first time i thought - this is just flying brick, that just does not do what you order, but when you
understand that style of piloting FDL is completely diferent, and you learn to handle it -
you are not going to replace this ship with anything else for fighting.
i gave up my FDL some months ago, kinda tried to move on and got myself a python, maxed it out for combat, bad idea...
the low pitch speed was so annoying and mostly when fighting ships like FAS, they got shields down/ messed up my hull, quite expensive and aggravating experience
after i watched your videos, i gave it another go with the FDL with consideration of your tutorials.
feels like heaven...
thank you
I'm a newish commander who finally got enough cash to grab an FDL. This video was incredibly helpful! Thank you!
with this tactic yesterday i won 30 pvp thx dude !
I'm saving up for this ship now. Your vids have already been a big help in preparing for what I'm going to deal with. I just recently started using the FAOFF. Huge game changer.
First time checking out your vids, though I think I've seen you around the Active Community Goals thread, perhaps...I finally decided I needed some outside help to get any better at piloting in a reasonable amount of time. Really glad to find quality content like this.
My set up is a Logitech g13 and a Logitech Force 3D stick (awesome budget build for E:D btw). I found that having the throttle increments at 25% helps maintain being in-between the blue zone on the throttle indicator. At full throttle two taps down takes me right in the center of the blue zone, and it stays their in proportion to pip management of engines. Also for staying on top of pip management Voice attack is great
Very nice work with these videos!
You made me buy an FDL.
Lol, apparently I'm a sith/jedi since I use mouse/keyboard xD. Works pretty well even :).
For those playing with mouse keyboard and looking for control-setup-inspiration my controls are like this:
W - Throttle Up
S - Throttle Down
A - Yaw left
D - Yaw right
Q - Strafe Left
E - Strafe Right
R - Deploy heatsink
F - Deploy Chaff
V - Fire Shield Cell Bank
Z - FA Off
X - Throttle 0%
C - Throttle 75% (for supercruise)
Shift - Thrust downwards
Space - Thrust upwards
Tab - Boost
Left mouse - Fire1
Right mouse - Fire2
Scrollwheel (click) - Select target ahead
Scrollwheel (roll) - Target subsystem
Mouse thumb button - Headlook (used often to 'zero' control input while pitching/rolling so I can stop movement instantly)
Mouse three buttons in between left and right mouse button - Throttle 50% / Throttle -50% / Target whichever attacked/interdicted you.
Moving mouse up/down - Pitch up/down
Moving mouse left/right - Roll left/right (Relative axis enabled so it zero's over time)
For me this works rather well, most things are within reach without moving my hand and I've been competitive in PvP with this setup as well :).
+Jognt incredible but I use a similar keyboard set up, just a few differences that I mapped my two thumb mouse buttons for pitch to engines or weapons, that way I don't let go the mouse if I need to do pitch management. Nice set up BTW. :)
Very well done - clear, to-the-point, useful. Many thanks.
Amazing vid, all the overlays are amazing dude, and the content is spot on, recently went exploring for a week in a dbs and got back in the fer and had totally forgotten how to fly in combat!! It has such a particular style but I love it. Love the informative and light hearted approach you have
This was a great video even though I don't fly a FDL. I need to get better with FA Off so seeing your techniques really helps me visualize better ways to use it. I was only using it to help turn but now I see other ways so thanks for this video. Great editing as well. You earned a sub :)
The thruster turns are very natural to me in ships with proper mountings for it to work but I can see where some people wouldnt have thought of it. One of the few things I just did automatically from day one.... still smashed into everything and blew up but hey I got 1 thing right
I was a Jedi before, until I got the x52. For some reason I was really good in manouvering in cqc with my mouse and keyboard. I had the translational thrusters bound to wsqe and yaw to ad. Then I had my mouse for roll and pitch, with a slow reset time (like when I held the mouse still my ship automatically slowed down turning). And it worked really well, still getting used to HOTAS controls, but I'm learning it and getting better every day.
Here i am, years later, finally fully upgraded my Corvette. Now i'm building a pure fighter and recently choose the FDL. It's quite funto learn to fly her, but i definitely already noticed that she wants to be handled very smoothly. Otherwise she turns so fast that you end up with a 180 and come to a quick stop for a short amount of time.
Thanks Vindicator Jones, great video! Wish I had watched it before I went out in my new shiny FDL haha. I found it really helpful for the manoeuvrability as I was trying to fly it like a vulture. Keep up the awesome work!
On the note about flight stick layout, Japanese Zero pilots had the trigger on their throttle specifically to avoid the same accidental stick inputs you mentioned. I found it helps in War Thunder, as well.
If you're targeting a power plant, you want to be behind, but also slightly above or below. Power plants are very well shielded if you're trying to fire directly from behind.
Thank you very much for your due diligence. Very good video. Please do A video for asp explorer (combat & undermining loadout, explorer loadout, long range smuggling). Please, your professionalism and help is truely needed. Thank you very much!!!
Yeah Vindicator Jones, it took me a solid two hours to get my keybourd and mouse control setup right, although it was worth it, now i can fly easily like a bird with a space helmet on :3
The basics for the layout are: A=Roll Left D=Roll RIght S=Pitch up W=Pitch Down
Z=(hold) Flight assist off (i wish i could toggle it to on and off instead of hold)
T=Target ship Tab=boost Shift=throttle up CTRL= Throttle Down C= DOwn Thrust
Spacebar=Thrust Up Q=Strafe left E=strafe right mouse scroll click in= Look around cockpit
G= cycle targets H= Highest Threat
a few others, still need to map heat sync and shield cell, when i get my vulture.
Btw i know these controls off memory because my computer died a month ago. water cooler blew up and harddrive with 1tb of shit died :/
Am i a jedi or sith lord? XD
Invest in a Thrustmaster t-flight, cheap and good quality for the price. Well worth it and your flying skills will increase dramatically. Especially after getting your binds set up perfectly for your liking.
About time a new video on the FDL! Guess my daily nagging in-game works :P Thanks Jonesy! We need to do a clan private Cz or CG with the rest of the guys soon as part of our team building/combat course, I would love to see the FDL in action first hand!
Even without using up thruster when pitching with assist on, the ships have a pendulum effect. It behaves a little different using the up/down thrusters, to not using thrusters at all. About the apex of the pitch, if you are down thrusting, let go of the thruster, and your nose will swing. Using the up thruster orients your ship a little different rather than not using it, so choose depending on the situation. Same if pitching down too. And yaw too, as I recently discovered.
I learnt some good things regardless of the ship, thanks.
This was so helpful! Wonderful video, thank you so much for your work.
Enjoy the parts of this video that apply to all ships (ie capacitor distribution and FAoff). thanks for the info, I've been using some of your tips when I play (mostly a bounty hunter type).
Really enjoying these - thanks for your efforts in making them. Great detail. :)
Great video, love the fdl, and it is a monster with the 1.5 changes. I feel there is no ship I cannot stay behind. But no matter how proficient you become there is always room for improvement, so im looking forward to your next fdl video. -subscribed
Another great video.
It's down to you sir that I have finally "clicked" with my FDL.But like many new pilots, finding the "sweet spot" when it comes to weapon loadouts is a problem (well, mine at least)
A video of your opinions on various loadouts would be great; as currently unsure what is best as per what you are doing (BHing, CZ etc)
Mate, you make that FDL dance!!! I've finally got one, and been flying it for a month n I'm not a PATCH on your skills. Maybe one day.......
wow I'm really impressed with how thorough you were with this. excellent job.
sub'd and I'm looking forward to more!
+P Murphy Thanks for the feedback! appreciate it
Amazing FAoff toggle control you have, I will try to engage FAon from now on to get better position behind my enemy.
Your videos on the FDL have made me want to buy one. It really sounds like I'd enjoy flying it over my Imperial Courier and Vulture.
+Deliverygirl You might not think that right away. For most pilots going from the vulture to the FDL seems like a step back initially, but give it a chance, and get used to its quirks, you will start to see why its such a great ship. :)
I actually sold my Vulture a couple of days ago as I didn't really enjoy it. I've been sticking to the Imperial Courier. I've been told it handles closer to the FDL than the Vulture.
+Deliverygirl If you like the courier, your going to LOVE the FDL. They handle similarly, but I think the FDL maneuvers a little better. Also you will have considerably more punch in the firepower department. Goodluck with it!
+Vindicator Jones I've also upgraded from my Imperial Courier to the FDL :) And yes, I love it ! I'll need to set it up first, using your previous video which is excellent, thanks for your work !
+François Gilbert Awesome mate. Glad I can help!
Loadout: High resist shields, 4 force shell cannons speed matched to a huge target lock breaker PA. You are welcome. Just don't let anyone use reverbrating cascade torps, you have tissue for hull.
Love your videos!!!
I am enjoying the heck out of my FDL with engineered Huge Beam lazer and x4 med frag cannons engineered with double shots. Just rips up anything you strafe.
Great video thanks. One point : in the last release combat with npc are more difficult
I love your videso and I know this video is really old but I just had to say it: the x52 and x52 pro has a two stage trigger
very well done video mate. thanks!
Loved this video, more like this please
I am trying to engineer my FDL for PVE combat. I am new to combat, and I love the ship, but in my opinion it drifts a little too much. I want to improve ships agility through engineering. Any advices?
Edit: just checked out your engineered test video for an FDL. Many thanks for this material, great help!
The best part about my FDL is learning how to fly her. I still have a long way to go.
Thanks so much I can use pip now and it a lot better to use and more fun
@Vindicator Jones: Regarding button use: the x52 has a two-stage trigger, so you could just put the rails on the second trigger detend
I tried when I first got the x52 but I did not like it. When in aggressive turns it is really hard to have the finesse to just use the first stage. . I use the pinkie for secondary fire. This way you can also keep your thumb around the stick while firing both weapon groups.
excellent videos, you really know your shit man!
Super detailed! Love it
Thanks sir for this informative video.
Thanks man you putting the time into these videos are amazing.
Smart and practical.
i would love to see a video like this for the viper
This is a really good video
People are telling me that I'll struggle with the FDL but I already flew my Viper 4 and Vulture using very very active pip management and some FA-off techniques, I also shield tank so this ship is going to be a dream for me.
The FDL is a very different kind of beast. Initially you may not like it, especially coming from the vulture. The vulture is extremely forgiving when flown badly, wheras the FDL is extremely unforgiving. Just be aware of that when making the transition, and in time you will love the FDL. Your friends are probably just trying to warn you for whats to come. Dont take it to heart, it happens to every single pilot when they transition.
Thanks for the advice :)
Just another thing, do you know anything about how the shields are affected by pips in 2.2? I heard they flattened out the curve a bit.
The changes are minimal. 4 pips into shields gives you a big damage resistance, and if your facing your target, then I always suggest 4 pips into shields.
Very nice video..I jus bought my 1st FDL shits LIT 😎..I will definitely apply this knowledge to the field..combat rank of 76% competent..on to master? Or dangerous?
I HAD THE CHANCE TO GET THE LANCE TODAY BUT I WENT WITH THE PYTHON.
great video thankyou
Very nice 1A vid pls make more excelent work!!! :D
Awsome video, but i have the same joystick that you have because of that i know that the trigger has a secondary " trigger" wenn you press it completly and because you set the primäry weapons on "B" i want to ask you what you have set to the secondary button instead or if you have assing anything at all to this button
Good stuff!
So is the FDL better for a skirmish player (Small fighter class ships) or is it for tank players (Big ships like the Anaconda, python, Federal corvette and the imperial cutter).
Hey man..love your videos. I have been trying this ship out, its been a tough one man. I keep relying on the SCBs so much that I run out so quick. When it comes to the Haz Rez or Combat Zones do you feel this ship is better than the FAS? FAS i know is much easier to fly however it "FEELS" like it has so much staying power. What do you think for a PVE side?
thanks for this tips
i use the pinky for the large weapons and the trigger for the smaller multies in this case
also your videos about the fdl should come as a users manual with the fdl ingame lol
I am using the same setup on my new x-56... I cant reach that top button.. I have trump hands.. its not good. lol..
Oooo I like that idea!! hahaha
Do not put the KW scanner or FSD interdictor on the same firegroup as weapons. You're just going to use more power when firing if you do that
Nice tips, looking forward to trying them out in-game
I use a c4 beam and c2 frag cannons
Damn you're good!
Thankyou kind sir, but there are a lot better pilots out there than me!
Fantastic video VJ. Any chance you could post your HUD colours?
+Connolly UK Yeah Jonesy, you still owe me the HUD colors. Show show plssssss :D
+Connolly UK
Sorry, thought I had already posted this
0.31, 0, 1
0, 1, 0
1, 0, 0
+Vindicator Jones thank u thank u thank u ! u shd put this into your future video info from now on, or else u will get asked for each video lol
+Vindicator Jones Thank you (:
She is a great ship :)
Do you think its a good idea to update the video for post 1.5 patch changes?? Still most of the information is still correct, but the FDL now handles much better, better heat management and bigger power plant. I can now fire up a class A4 SCB and no need for a heat sink!! In my Fed. Assault Ship if I use a class 4 SCB (A or B) I need a heat sink! The jump range is still crap!!! I can only get 12ly because I have a combat setup. Because of the FDL videos I've subscribed!! Very nice videos.
+lxgn98 Its on my list of things to do... lol.. But honestly, I dont run SCB's anymore, Class 4 SCB's seem useless on the FDL now if you have a lot of boosters, it barely fills even 1 bar. I am using HRP's now and a big fuel scoop to help me get around. I am still polishing my "perfect" FDL build and figuring out what works best after 1.5.. but I will get around to it.. Cheers though!
Hey Vindicator.. I am really trying to apply all of your combat techniques.. I never seem to get anybody on my tail, but I always have problems to stay behind the enemy.. Whenever I attack from behind.. They seem always to turn around and face me.. This happens to me even if I am fly in my vulture... Even if I fight big ships like clippers and anacondas .. they just twist around like a turret and I always struggle to get behind them afterwards...
Since the changes would you change your video? What about Military armor?
+Edward Huggins I will be doing a big update on the FDL after the new class 4 weapons and engineers comes out. there's not much point in doing anything yet as so much will change after the big update next month. As for military armour.. absolutely.. get it.. it only affects the FDL marginally, but for the added protection, its worth it.
I bought a FDL yesterday.
I sell it back 5 min later.
I just bought it and im struggling ...My Kraith was better
@@ratstar4102 Kraith is life
How about all frags
What's that black paint job?
I really, really hate off-center seats. Huge bugbear of mine. It's a deal breaker. Luckily I don't PVP. So chasing the meta isn't something I need to do.
I’m happy to say I’m fairly wealthy in elite having about 400 mil if I sell everything, so I bought an FDL recently, and they are one of the most fun ships in the game
P.S. Before fa off stuff, why not tell your students to just use backthrottle efficiently?
Thats part of the next video. I am making a series on this. This was just the first introductory video
I thought at 0:12 that was a small replica of a planet and a ship in real life.
lol you shot a sidey with huge plasma...
anyway with the buff on fdl will it be able to handle something like 5 beams? assuming heat is of no concern that is
+napoleonic sp007rz lol, small targets are relatively easy once you have got used to how the PA works.
You will be able to install 5 beams, but your distributor is going to be the same, so your only going to get a few seconds before your distributor drains completely, not to mention your going to overheat pretty quickly.
Let me dispell a myth for you. Beams do, do more damage, but their are utterly inefficient. In fact you will do more damage to a target using pulses in shorter period of time if you counter in the distributor limitations and heat penalty.
Beams are great for those using fixed weapons as you wont be firing them constantly, and will get a lot of damage on the target faster than pulses.. But if your using gimbaled, then your going to get far more sustained damage on a target due to their high efficiency.
Hope that helps!
Vindicator Jones o yea, I forgot the distributor thing...
How about bursts vs pulses? Have you done tests about them?
Also how about rail guns? I see many fdl in pvp videos are using multi cannons, huge cannons or plasma but never seen one with rail guns, aren't rail guns almost as instant hit as lasers? Wouldn't 4 med rail guns outclass 1 huge plasma? And they don't suffer from hit problem as much as plasma
Vindicator Jones also I need your answer here, about fdl thruster boosted maneuvering, basically I'm cobfused if I'm pulling the nose of the ship up (pitch up), do I need to use up or down thruster to boost the maneuver? I can't quite understand it lol
+napoleonic sp007rz Initially use the down thruster, then half way through the turn immediately hit the up thruster. You will have to feel your way through the turn to decide when is the best time to switch. It takes a little practice, but in time you will get used to it.
+napoleonic sp007rz Railguns are great against shields and components, but useless against hulls. Their high energy demand, high heat profile and very low ammo storage (30 rounds) makes them good only for short PVP engagements. Plasma has 105 rounds, does hull and shields damage equally and has splash damage. There are pros and cons for all weapon types.
Lol, im still getting out pitched by anacondas at full downward thrust.
dude i feel like very few people play this with a joystick
can you please teach me a control setting for Xbox one i am try to find and advance controll setting but for some reason i cant make a good setting
I cant help you there, I'm sorry. But if you head over to the frontier forums, I have no doubt someone in the Xbox community can help you out. forums.frontier.co.uk/
okay much appreciated for the replay i will go to the forum thx again BTW really good video
So I bought an FDL after flying a vulture and a federal assault ship. I was decimating stuff with the vulture/FAS, but I've been having issues with the FDL. A deadly dropship NPC got me to 67% hull before I finished it off. WTF!? I guess I'm a shitty FDL pilot.
+Razor IRL FAS and Vulture are far more forgiving in terms of piloting. Dont blame yourself, the FDL takes time to learn how to fly it correctly. I remember coming from the Vulture to the FDL for the first time, and I HATED the FDL, it felt like a step backwards. But with some time, patience and persistence, I started to understand how the FDL likes to be flown. It is harder to fly more effectively than the FAS or Vulture, but when you do finally get it right, you will see just how powerful the FDL is in the right hands. Dont give up, give yourself some time to get used to it. in 2 or 3 weeks you will start to feel that smile across your face grow ;)
+Vindicator Jones Thanks for the reply! Saved up some cash and got A-rated modules for the FDL, and gonna spend some time getting more used to it. That SOUND of it alone just makes me wanna hang in there until I can fly it ok :D
I really need your HUD ! Nice video by the way ! :D If somebody have the code of the HUD it could be great to send me :)
+Darkfoin Foin
Sorry mate, I thought I had given them out already..
0.31, 0, 1
0, 1, 0
1, 0, 0
+Vindicator Jones Thanks A LOT!!
+Vindicator Jones everyone loves your color ^_^
You think I can find a decent HOTAS in Aus? (specifically the X56 Rhino) Yeah nah mate, everywhere are all sold out "waiting on supplier" because of the beer flu. But alas, I shall keep waiting and watch... "study"... your vids.
What do I have to do to persuade you to make one of these for a Vulture?
There is a strong possibility of me making one on a completely maxed engineered vulture soon. I am just trying to find the time between work, grinding mats and making content.
That would be amazing.
Point at target, kill it, don't get shot down. Rinse, repeat, tutorial over. :)
I didn't know people used different controllers, I just use xbox
My point of view, as Fer deLance PvP pilot since it was released.
I used to go in blue zone all the time, but eventually I learned that it's not the best way to go around things. It's good, for beginners. Advanced pilots can ignore this, there are better ways to fly. I use my instincts, not theory, i'm not going to try to describe it. Oh and forgot to mention - I fly D class shield for even better agility, and tank with my hull. No SCBs. People fear my Keiyu =]
+RheaAyase Well, technically what I said is correct. The FDL will turn fastest in the blue zone of your throttle. This excludes FAOFF boost turns and similar maneuvers. But if you are behind your target and dog fighting, then you should always keep your throttle in the blue. Also D or A class shields have negligible affect to handling. I have done turn tests with different weight loadouts, and in almost all cases, it dosent seem to affect the FDL too much at all. Yes, I was surprised also.
+Vindicator Jones yep, and also there is difference between changing rotation fast, and changing actual direction fast =] Also I need the D for power, first of all, and as bonus it's light... i could probably get away with C if i would reaaaaally want to, maybe, but I like every single m/s i can get =] And hey, thanks for me-buff FDev (aka SCB nerf) :D
Great video but instead of following all that, why not invest into a high class combat ship?
If you aren't running the FDL stealth your doing it wrong
+Austin Newberry Not everyone plays PVP.
true
