      Your build could use some tweaking. Switching out the high performance drive for just a plain A-rated drive gives another 3 degrees/sec pitch and almost 30 m/s speed, and dropping the 0A scanner down to like 0C or 0D really reduces the power draw while maintaining 2500m (0D) scanning range. The reduced power could let you drop the monstered from the reactor and drop the overcharge a bit, resulting in much better heat characteristics for the ship as a whole.
      If you look at the performance curves in coriolis, you'll see that the high performance drives are really only better if you're BELOW optimal mass, and you're actually somewhat over it..
      I don't know why FD made scanners so expensive to run. They already have the opportunity cost of not being a shield booster, chaff, or point defense, so they don't really need additional suckage in the form of insane power consumption added on top :C

    If you want to boost but avoid overshooting, you can hit boost, then drop landing gear or cargo hatch. It will cap your max speed, giving you the maneuverability boost without getting your velocity too high. Just remember to retract after.

    • @madrax5733
      @madrax5733 4 года назад +15

      If you use the cargo hatch (we call it scoop boosting) you can bind the cargo hatch to hold rather than toggle. It means you can feather the use of it to give a finer control.

    • @Hole_In_Head
      @Hole_In_Head 4 года назад +6

      @@madrax5733 Ha, nice. Hadn't thought of that. Happen to have both gear and scoop easily toggled on the HOTAS, but that'd be a good way to keep control and not forget to retract. :)

    • @VindicatorJones
      @VindicatorJones  4 года назад +14

      There is one thing I have always been committed to, and thats showing a true representation of combat.. Not selected perfect cuts, but also my screw ups. Combat is messsy, and no one is perfect, making mistakes is how people learn, and even after 6000 hours in ED, I am still learning. To show only my perfect "kills" I think is disingenuous... I am not here to say hey, look how good I am.. I want people to learn with me, through my victories and defeats.

    bruh, I went back to my imperial courier, my first love in elite dangerous, to try these moves after watching your video. I remember the days when this was tactic was viable. It was the only way I ever survived anything as a lowly bounty hunter. But it just doesn't work anymore on a consistent basis. I find more wings than before. I find far more FA-off enemies that flip in front of you. And with the changes to engineering, small hardpoints aren't as effective. And try taking this tactic out of rings and into conflict zones. To not be only negative, I find being fast more helpful than out-turning these days. Long-range or overcharged weapons and "booming and zooming" works well. And it feels like you're pushing your craft to its absolute limit. Which is super satisfying. One reason why riding midsize and small cc motorcycles is so fun, you always feel like you blazing around.

    Great video. I tend to avoid large targets when I'm flying small ships. (when I make a mistake I tend to die before I can recover from it)
    One thing I noticed is that the sensor range seems to be set to maximum. I find it easier to leave it at minimum so I can tell where targets are in relation to me when they're not in front of me.
    I've got an analog dial mapped to it so I can adjust it easy, but even the minimum range is further than you can maintain target lock.
    Of course playing in VR helps a lot for situational awareness. It would be interesting to see how well Vidicator could do with VR or even TrackIR to look around with.

    You should really target subsystems on bigger ships, especially Dangerous or higher ranked, as they often use SCBs and may have some engineering. You're really good at keeping a dominant position, and against most ships, that same position you take is great for hitting power plants. I bet you could have taken that Anaconda out much faster by destroying the plant instead of chewing through allllll that armor.
    Great video, though, and great flying! Small ship vs big ship combat is my favorite!

    This is only possible because despite what you say.. you're one of the best pilots in the game. A friend and I tried this a few days ago in 2 Vipers, we're both seasoned pilots and we couldn't drop a single target. No, we didn't have engineering, but there were two of us.
    This is an entertaining video and it's cool that you made it, but this type of thing is not possible for a large number of players who simply can't fly like this.

      Having a good control setup is pretty clutch too. I started with KB/M and my accuracy was great, but I couldn't maneuver to save my life.
      Switched to a PS4 pad and while my accuracy went down, I could maneuver A LOT better. It made a world of difference, but I still couldn't figure out how to map all six axes in an intuitive way and have all the buttons for everything else you need too.
      Finally bit the bullet and bought a HOTAS and I can safely say my combat is looking pretty similar to what VJ is pulling off in this video at this point. Still some mistakes in there like what he was complaining about, but I feel pretty good about the improvement. Mostly flying a half engineered Vulture for combat, and with it, I can manage to take down about any NPC in a one on one dogfight. My favorite was taking down an Elite rated FDL. Super long battle, ended with about 30% hull and needed a break after, but felt satisfying.
      Like anything it takes practice. Maybe just hit a wall? Keep at it and you'll probably eventually find something on your own that clicks. It'll get you over and take you even further once it does.

    As you go super close you do not need the A class kill warrant scanner, the lower classes take much less energy. Only the A rated kill warrant scanner is so power hungry, not a factor for a big ship but a huge improvement for a small ship, you will not even need power management to feed everything. And with that I can even mount 2 plasma and 2 rails, I have the power if I opt for class D kill warrant scanner.
    I would go for the A class sensor too.

    My room mate recently bought Elite and accidentally (he didn't properly read the whole thing) took a mission to kill an Expert rank pirate (his 2nd or 3rd day playing the game).
    So with his unengineered ViperMk3 (2x 2MC 2x 1BL all gimballed, D and B core internals, 3C Bi-Weave, lightweight alloys, some hull reinf) he flies into the Mission Target instance... (no Interdictor yet)
    and his target turns out an Expert AI Fer De Lance xD
    Got a bit scared of a larger, seemingly much faster moving ship, so he asked me to try take it down.
    It turned out much easier than you'd think, so after I was done with such, I didn't even need to watch Jones' video to believe him that it's doable even against Elite AI and targets such as Pythons, Clippers etc.
    You just need to be even more focused and patient.
    Against AI at least it's more of an endurance/focus match than need for some crazyass dogfighting skills, where you constantly pull full speed, boosted, vertical thrusters turns with your FA off.
    If you can get on its ass or close and on top/right below of it and maintain that - you're taking it down boy, like breaking a horse XD

    I'm still fairly new to the game, but my friends and I take a full wing of Viper MkIIIs in to Hazres routinely and take down every target we see regardless of size. Chieftains, Pythons, Anacondas... a completely unengineered wing of newbies in cheap ships can smoke them all with only occasional casualties when properly coordinated. Focus entirely on positioning, stay in tight and away from your target's nose, and you'll be fine.
    It's probably not the "most efficient" way to make money, but we're having fun and turning a profit. Seeing as those are our two objectives I consider it a success.

    • @mobiuscoreindustries
      @mobiuscoreindustries 3 года назад

      A very late repply, but this is mainly because of changes that frontier did to NPC modules way back. essentially, about 2 months after official launch, players realised that one of the best and most efficient ways to take down python class and above ships (especially when they had elite status) was to go for the powerplant. In the beta it wasn't unusual for people to target the FSD (to prevent ships from leaving) but then people realized that against elite ships, the powerplant would falter far before the hull itself and killing the reactor would imediatly blow the ship up, moreover as the powerplant got damaged, the ship would experience power malfunctions which COULD force the NPC ship to turn off systems in much the same way that a player would.
      Sadly frontier didn't like that, so they changed the way NPCs manage their power and heat. In short, they don't. They have pretty much unlimited allocated power and heat which caused great stirr when that was paired with engineered modules in the early engineer era, where NPCs would not only get A ranked everything, and unlimited consumables, but also unlimited pips and could carry loadouts which would normally overload or fry a player ship. Technically, you can still go for the powerplant to at least disable the ship for a little while. However, this is likely futile as now it is a LOT harder to bring down the power plant before the rest of the ship goes down anyway, which is why you see commanders only focusing on either drives or FSD as it is a far more usefull target to strike, and only if they have a specific need to do so.

    Great Build. Deep Charge rather than Mass Manager for lower than Grade 5 FSDs. It uses slightly more power but it doesn't effect you Priorities on the build. Are Kill Warrant Scanners still worth it after the Nerf? Swapping for an extra Shield booster eliminates all power issues but it does smash down the Jump Range.

I have 2D beam laser for shield melting and 3C multi&3A seeker for the afterparty. My firepower is enough now, also there's an: 7A powerplant, 7A power distributor, 6A thrusters, and for defence a military grade comp, 5A prismatic shield gen, several reinforcement package. Pretty strong, i mean i can take out deadly anacondas without problem. But it still feels bit slow to turn, and descend&elevate. So what should i do in order to solve these manouverability problems, what would you recommed? Ah, and welcome back😁

      Engineer your drives to Dirty Drives level 5 with Drag Drives Special Effect. This will increase your top speed and give you better thruster response. Thats about it im afraid.. You could try to lighten your ship also, but in my experience it the change is negligible.

    combat might be fun but not profitable not enough to keep you in CR, but trading does
    as seen in get a bounty of 88,590 cr on a imperial clipper where Tobacco at 5,035 CR and a python with 256 cargo space can net you 1,288,960 cr for one trip, I did combat and racked up 12 bounty and it came to 1,122,243 cr, 12 trips selling Tobacco would giving me 15,467,520 cr.

    I really would like to see fdl pitted up against alliance ships and fas cuz i find them reverse turning and boosting more often and therefore prove to be more challenging. Hard to keep position and even harder to get into position. I've been practinsing with fdl and in the beginnig it was a challenge to even survive long enough to learn from the encounter.

      He does a lot of talk about "anticipating the turn" in those joust scenarios where he starts turning and many times goes FA off for the drift effect before the enemy passes. That way when they go by, you're already facing that direction and can throttle up or even boost to catch up and get behind them. That's the best way to close the gap and stop jousting over and over. If the enemy gets too far away, this will happen over and over so you gotta try to stay close

    Do those small MCs not take a very long time to kill anything tho? Would cytos and medium MCs not do a better job? powerplay I know but they are very good for their size. Should kill shields quicker, then I guess its a trade off of sm MCs + med beams vs med MCs, would your PD power the former enough for them to out perform the latter?

    I have a question about your build-- I see you had enhanced thrusters fitted with a top boost of 544, but regular 3A thrusters (with the same dirty/drag engineering) would have a top speed of 577 with your loadout since the regular thrusters can handle the weight better. I am wondering if there's any benefit the enhanced thrusters have here, like do they have even more powerful lateral thrusters or something? Even if the top speed is lower?
    My G5'd Viper I like to use for fun is similar, but I opted for the regular thrusters since I noticed I am quite a bit faster than using engineered enhanced thrusters when having an actual combat loadout. But that's just boost speed, and I never tested to see if my thrustering would be better with G5'd enhanced thrusters (and I use a lotta thrustering to stay behind everyone, so that matters more for me than boost speed).
    I could see this being a situation where either I was unaware that enhanced thrusters are indeed "better" if ya want more oomph for your thrusters, or you just happened to have G5'd enhanced thrusters ready to go and didn't see regular thrusters would be faster. No worries either way, I just noticed it and was curious.

    Are you using a hotas, or a controller? Just wondering how you keep your throttle from constantly getting stuck in neutral after having to make a hard reverse thrust, or throttling down to a reverse thrust, and instead of actually firing reverse thrusters, you’re stuck in neutral because you have to release the left bumper after hitting zero thrust, then hit it again to start reverse thrust. I constantly find myself thinking I’m using forward or reverse thrust, only to find out I’m at zero percent in either direction.

    • @Aiur4HB
      @Aiur4HB 3 года назад

      No, you do not have to have engineering to enjoy it. Engineering makes the tools you have better, like weapons. So you may enjoy combat more and win more due to the better tools. But even if you do not use engineering you will still have a blast.

    • @joelfletcher3098
      @joelfletcher3098 Год назад

      To be completely honest, you can’t compete without fully engineered ships. With the AI now being ranked, and equipped accordingly, you can have a cutter completely decked out with unengineered modules, and get smoked by an elite krait. Likewise, as vindicator showed, you can take an engineered viper and take out a fairly well engineered conda. A fully engineered anaconda can take out any npc easily. I had a mission send anacondas against my cargo cutter. All dangerous and above. I took out 2, and when the third interdicted me, an elite pilot, as I was destroying him, a random elite type 10 jumped in and I was able to destroy both with little effort. They got my shields down to one and a half rings. An unengineered cutter, or vette, for that matter, probably would have cost me my cargo…and a costly rebuy.

    • @joelfletcher3098
      @joelfletcher3098 Год назад

      Also, if you’re in a conflict zone, and the spec ops come in, they’re all flying fully G5 engineered ships. Makes for some fun fights. Then there’s the super special ops force, I can’t remember what they’re called, but they’re basically flying ships with the firepower of a space station. You can’t beat them, even fully engineered. But having an engineered ship may, I mean, may, give you enough time to jump away. They come in in waves of like 20 ships, one wave after another.

    Hey, I've been watching your videos for a couple of day now and I learned a ton in short tiemespan. I'm no longer dying to every ship looking at me and iI can mostly stay in a goodsafe position and dish out damage. However, when fighting some ships, they sometimes boost away and then do 180 turn, facing me, and start damaging me before I can get back into position.
    From what I've seen in your videos (and I hope I understood correctly), when they come towards me (joust?) I down thrust, point my nose up and then up thrust to be back on their tail as they pass me. I also go FAOFF during the turn and then FAON when I face them again.
    Problem is by the time I finished my turn there is so much distance between us that they can just do that all over again and I take too much damage in the process... Any tips? :D
    Currently in a Python with no engineering (started playing about a week ago).
    PS. thank you for your guides, very explicit and easy to understand. The box with thruster direction was a godsend as well :P
