The Dino, The "Almost" Ferrari That Changed The Company | Carfection 4K

  • The Dino started a lineage of great mid-engined Ferraris. But it wasn't always treated as the great car that it is. Alex Goy explains.
    It was named after Enzo Ferrari's son who had great talent for making engines. He tragically passed away at a young age. This car was a tribute to him and the start of a long line of great mid-engined Ferraris.

    This is, to my mind, one of the most beautiful Ferrari’s ever made. Sadly, unreachable for most of us, but nevertheless utterly stunning, so delicate, small enough to be manageable on an average B road, I want one...

      Looks much better than most sports cars today. Modern designs have way too much going on. Nearly every recent car is a confusing mess. Your eyes just give up trying to interpret the designer's vision.

    Such a shame about Enzo's sons early death. If he had this much of an impact on the company with just this car, imagine what he could have accomplished if he had more time.

  • @elroyfudbucker6806

    At 6:30: from what I read about Dino, he initially came up win the idea for a V6 in the '50s, but it was Vittorio Jano, designer of Alfa Romeo's legendary racing engines in the '30s who actually designed it. Enzo was reluctant to build the Dino, but when he saw how well Porsche were doing & how well Ferrari wasn't doing (financially), he agreed to it in spite of his proclamation about front-engined cars ("The horse pulls the cart") & that "no car bearing the name Ferrari shall have less than 12 cylinders". Thus the name, "Dino" instead of Ferrari. In fact, the Ferrari factory had very little to do with the car as a whole; Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina designed it, Scaglietti built them & Fiat made the engines. They were sold through Ferrari dealerships as their first "high volume" & least expensive car. Now they rank amongst the most expensive of old Ferraris. I've seen a few advertised for AU$750,000. Just one powerball ......

    • @stephanvelines7006
      @stephanvelines7006 2 года назад +1

      Very true, Fiat build the engines and used them in their own Fiat Dino available as a Spider (Pininfarina) or Coupe (Bertone). Like the Dino (Ferrari) two version of Fiat Dinos were built: first an aluminium 2.0L, solid rear axle, Fiat 5 speed and then the cast iron 2.4L V6, independent rear axle, ZF dog leg 5 speed.
      The engine Ferrari used were lifted from the Fiat production line at random and with no further modification, so it’s quite dubious why the Ferrari engine has 10 - 15 more HP. This very engine was also used in another legend: the Lancia Stratos.
      Interesting fact: today’s Ferrari V12 use a 65° cylinder bank angle which was introduced with the Dino V6 engine to house the carburetors and improve air/fuel mixture flow to the combustion chamber. The Colombo V12 of the day used a more traditional 60° angle.

    Aged 18 , many many years ago I remember being overtaken by a Dino and thinking ‘one day’… sadly Dino values always remained out of reach, but the extraordinary thing is that even today as a design it is just perfect. Very, Very few car designs don’t age, but this remains perfect. I own a modern Elise which was inspired by this car -(even Julian Thompson the designer of the s1 Elise owns one and references as such) and an Elise would decimate the 246 down a road- it is in so many ways the every man’s Dino. However the Dino to me is and will probably always be one of the pinnacles of car design.

      I can concur. I have had a Dino - about twenty years ago - it felt like a mini Group C racer from that era. I have had two Elises - but they don't compare other than the more hardcore feel - less refined but more racy - the engine note nowhere near that of the Dino - and I have mistakenly bought a latest Boxster with a Turbo flat 4 -which is the wrong engine - Beetle anyone? (I've had one of those too) It's will be sold in favour of horrors of horrors - a Taycan........

      And it was used in the Fiat Dino (as it was also built by Fiat) in both 2.0L aluminium and later 2.4L cast iron form. The engines were all taken at random from the Fiat production line so it’s a bit dubious why Ferrari claims its Dinos make ~ 10 .. 15 HP more (as they are not further modified) and a different exhaust and intake system hardly makes such gains.
      The engine in general is highly tunable as average piston speeds are comparatively low thanks to the large bore, so both a increase in compression and higher RPM can be implemented reliably (and were implemented for Stratos in race trim). It truly is a race engine that would have threatened Ferraris V12 in the day if not tamed down considerably.
