In this episode, Iain takes a closer look at the Dino 246 GTS, a Ferrari by everything but name and their answer to the Fiat Dino, in the beginnings of Fiat and Ferrari's relationship that has endured for more than half a Century. Powered by the same modest but thoroughbred joint-venture V6 engine tracing its DNA to Formula 2, the Dino was the first mid-engined road-going production Ferrari, setting a blueprint that continues to this day.
This particular rare and beautifully original example is one of only 7 right-hand drive Dinos with the "Chairs and Flares" options of Daytona seats and wider flared wheel arches. Iain inspects the engine to diagnose some running faults, and demonstrates replacing some tappets.

No stupid music, no over excited shouting. Just a gentleman who really knows his stuff. Pure bliss! Well done Iain
Massively underrated, there’s no better automotive channel than this full stop.
Jay Leno is pretty good too :)
i dont think its under rated , more unknown.
Unknown for now but he hit fifty thousand subs way faster than most auto chans. he will hit a mil within another year bank on it.
It's top notch but so is m539 restorations as well 👍
Love the smile on his face when he floors a car out of the corners. The one he did on the M1 was the million pound smile!. Just fabulous!. TQ.
18 minutes gone in the blink of an eye. When Harry met Iain it was a match made in heaven. The two best channels by far.
agreed! these two along with bertim (BBI) & stef (papadakisracing) are my top picks
they all have unbridled joy in their work and never patronise viewers regardless of value or complexity.
good professionals don’t rush fuss or curse; we’re lucky to get their content
Viktor Sligo
Agree he forgot Catchpole, these three guys are the 'Holy Trinity' of motoring on RUclips. 👍🏻
Agreed. Great depth of knowledge you can’t read about
Great videos, so informative and every thing is explained so well and love the test drives, my new favorite car channel.
The fact that he puts the cap back on the pen each time he uses it shows he knows how to do things properly.
Oddly I thought the same........ Glad I'm not alone in my thinking......
Grab a scotch, put this on, maybe world's okay..for 18 minutes...
Cheers, mine was a Guinness. :)
Agree. My blood pressure went down a few points after watching the video.
Hello J.P. uhh, are you an early starter or are you in another time zone? 😨😨
@@johndavey72 Yes mate, much closer to the date line, got the early edition
I like chocolate milk better but we can share the pleasure equally.
Mr. Tyrrell you don't have to thanks us. Actually is all the way around. Thank you for one more lesson on cars. Greetings from Brazil and stay safe.
Great comment.
A venn diagram of people who watch Harrys Garage and this is a circle.
I don’t watch Harry’s garage, I find him annoying. Too much excitement, not enough technical
You're absolutely right, luv both Harry and Tyrrells channels.
Two circles
I like both, and I'm not very technical, but can appreciate the technical. Rarely over my head to the point of frustration. Mr Tyrrell is an artist and I am an art lover.
@barry rudge I'm not very technical but I think I like this channel a little more. Sometimes Harry's intros are a little tedious, IMO. And Mr Tyrrell seems to capture the 'rush' of driving pleasure more on video and the sound you hear in the cabin. With Harry and most journos, he doesn't pause his voice long enough and I have to imagine eveything based on his words rather than receiving the experience. Here I feel more part of the driving experience. Would love it if the drives were a little longer.
I've just discovered your super site, January 18, 2024.
Ian, you have the ability of sharing your vast knowledge in simple but clear language. The video "turbo-charged & supercharged" video is a fine example. You bring to light the difficult challenge of explaining advanced technical issues to the likes of us....
I'm in my ninetieth year, and now enjoy some of the finer technical points of my petrolheaded mind, energized after arrival in Canada in 1951 at the tender age of 17. As a young man in Eastern Canada, I enjoyed many British four cylinder sports cars: an early MGTC, a TD, then a 1955 BN1 Healey, a Mini Cooper, and later a Spitfire. Your videos have given me a deeper understanding of what I experienced with cars and technology of that era.
As an aside, and you may hardly believe this story. I raced the Healey briefly in 1957 on an airport circuit, learning so much about 'accelerated' driving, and the motorsport world. I have photos of my efforts in one event following a Montreal owner driving his Jaguar XKSS. I hardly believe this myself, but photographs clearly show the 'SS' and myself in action.
In light of what is now known about the SS, I wonder if you have comments.
Rodney Vancouver Island Canada
Thank you for your highly interesting comment. You have some very interesting experiences.
It’s easy to forget that some of the cars that are now “iconic” had colourful pasts.
Thanks again!
This is genuinely the best of the historic, restoration, etc channels on RUclips. Diamond inlaid platinum quality from beginning to end. Bad Obsession is the modification and Harry's Garage the classic car review equivalents The rest, whilst well worth watching are also rans.
I second that.
Jason Pinkwhistle. If you enjoy classic car restorations. One guy who specialises in older Alfa Romeo's is a South African guy called Jethro Bonner. His channel is well worth a watch.

@@curmudgeon1933 indeed Jethro is excellent, beautifully filmed too
bad obsession?
are those the guys whove taken seven fucking years to put 4wd in a mini?
seven fucking YEARS!
have to recommed westen champlin, he rebuilt a peterbilt in a month and put a 6bt in a mustang this week.
.
you like technical, ?
deboss garage is no nonsense, big diesels, proper man stuff.
none of this farting about in a polo shirt lark.
Vise Grip Garage is (was) worth a look. He acts like a hillbilly hack then you see what he does.
When I watch guys like working on engines with all the right tools and knowledge, I remember my first years learniing how to do this. A screwdriver ( or kitchen knife ) Set of visegrips. Crescent wrench and a hammer. A .lot of skinned knuckles. I remember changing rings, bearings ,other stuff on a back street in Mexico city. Holding the engiine up with the wheel jack on the front pulley of the crankshaft. I was under it when it slipped off the jack and mashed my right middle finger. Took a few days ,but the car went another 10K miles before it blew up !!!! That was the winter of '75--'76 AH Youth !!!!!
Listening to Ian is easy. He speaks well and comfortably. What makes it even better is plethora of knowledge he shares as he talks about what he is doing, adding that oh so important bit of history which adds so much to the fun of the story and process. He really knows his stuff. Fun as heck for me.
I’m 63 years-old and can remember quite clearly how cheap these cars were to buy used and how nobody entered one in a Ferrari gathering because they were not considered proper Ferrari’s. Of course, AC Cobras languished in dealership showrooms, too. Because for less money you could buy a Corvette that had roll-up windows and a heater. Lol. Time has a funny way of making us look back at things through a different lens. Love these videos.
Cheap? The list price was £5485 in 1973. That's £67 grand in today's money.
@@asensibleyoungman2978 in Oz they were AUD$12,000 in the early 80s....
@@asensibleyoungman2978 you missed the "buy used" part
This brings me back to the time that I worked as a mechanic at a FIAT garage, many valves adjusted in this way :-)
No loud music,no overactive presenters, just a knowledgeable man telling and showing us what's going on as if we are equals. Just brilliant, thank you very very much Mr Tyrell.
The only reason this channels subs is not in the millions is that it's still new and people haven't found it yet, but they will and I'm so glad I found it because it's honestly my favourite channel on YT.
Daio Agreed!!!
Disagree. This is far too high quality to be popular.
This is the only channel I subscribe to that I can hit the like button before I even watch an episode. The filming is first rate, the commentary is seamless, the knowledge is deep. This feels like a television program with a high production budget. It's better than pretty much anything on the Motortrend channel. Iain should be on the short list for knighthood.
Presented as beautifully as the car with just the right amount of technical input to make it thoroughly interesting and educational. Listening with screwdrivers and tubes to the ear - class. Who’s training the younger generation when these national treasures finally sit back? Thank you Iain and of course, thank you thank you Harry.
Sláinte JP
Iain's telling smile and nod at the end, 'my work here is done'. Brilliant.
I'm going to start putting a screwdriver in my ear when I diagnose *anything* broken from this moment forward.
That's what I thought in the 70s when I first saw one; one of the most beautiful cars ever.
Brilliant channel, great to see an expert explaining things clearly and so interesting, could watch all day
Stunning car of the early 70s no computers running it and this is why we need Ian 😊 a masterful mechanic
I really can't get enought of this RUclips channel....
So much so that I've thrown my TV out of the window ( I live in a top floor penthouse)
This is all I need on a regular basis.
@@BoxerEngineSounds Ha ha ha, a good one!
I really like this guy. He doesn't just put his cars away in a garage while waiting for them to increase in value. He maintains and drives them. The perfect classic car owner.
Best thing about cars is the people behind them. The engineers that made them and the mechanics that maintain them are so cool.
This is my favourite RUclips channel. As far as I’m concerned you couldn’t make enough of these videos
Wow !! Don't recall ever seeing a Dino in black.... It looks amazing !
Rapidly become one of the best channels available through sharing a lifetime of knowledge... and still gracious enough to thank the audience for watching. Class.
Woke up this morn to news the sports car segment is in terminal decline and will disappear. Who would have thought. So glad channels like this exist to remind us what it's all about and why we love cars.
This is just perfect viewing for lockdown. You enjoy doing these, look below at how much this is appreciated.
Had never been interested in cars until a 1971 Bora (metalic blue centre-spread in a Car mag) made my jaw drop when I opened the page - but it was the 246GT that finally cemented my descent into petrol-headedness... :)
That's another brilliant video.
Background info, repair, test drive with a soundtrack... It does not get any better!
Added to the Watch Later list, waited till Saturday morning, got some good coffee, then watched the video, just because this is the best escapism there is on You Tube for a petrol head. The fun facts, the fixing, the amazing looking Dino, and the drive at the end, great way to spend 20 mins.
STOP !!! Everything !!! GENIUS at Work !! Iain you are an absolute joy to watch and listen too
Thank You for providing so much happiness. Stay safe
Haven't stopped watching this great channel since I found it! In-depth analysis of engine & construction that is totally obsurbing. Please don't stop.
What a great video. I loved the way you explained the process of changing the tappet shim. And that sound, bliss.
A red 1969 246 Dino Gt was my first “supercar” experience as a 15yr old in 1972. It felt like a rocket ship then!
Mr Tyrrell, as a ham-fisted oaf incapable of anything beyond an oil change, your videos are an absolute joy. Such a wealth of knowledge and put across in a delightful way. All power to your elbow.
YES YES YES!! Cant get enough if this. Shim under buckets are no fun to adjust. My old Kawasaki's are that way.
Yes I had a Z550 about 1981. Pain to remove buckets every time.
Yes agree ....am an ex Bike Mechanic .cams out to do it .right pain .lol
@@motamark Cams could stay in on my 1975 Z1b.
@@robertpowell7672 I had a 550 gpz and they were always in spec. I have never found a bucket and shim motorcycle to be out of spec.
Same with my Street Triple.
Iain diagnoses tappet clearances but listening to a screwdriver placed against the head of a Ferrari engine, and tunes the carbs on a DB5 with a piece of garden hose. This is the man you want working on your car! It must just take a staggering amount of knowledge and experience, mind blowing.
Another of my all time favourite cars. Also the first Ferrari I worked on in '76 when I started working for a Ferrari/Mercedes/Porsche main delaer in Essex. It, too was a black GTS. Brilliant stuff.
Listening to Ian is so pleasant! And these cars are such a masterpiece! Such a treasure I found on RUclips!
I think what I love about the presentation here is that it rises above cars specifically and speaks about the love of supreme excellence in all things. Throughly enjoyed as always!
So wonderfully old school, just listening to the engine to diagnose an issue. I used to own a 1976 Alfa Spyder with twin Weber carburettors, my mechanic just listened to them and tuned them with a screwdriver to perfection, like watching a master piano tuner...great video!
Fascinating insight into the Dinos history. What a beautiful car - Thanks Iain for bringing it to us in such an engaging style 👍
The Dino is timeless in design and looks stunning in black.......
Thank you for this channel.......
Mr Tyrrell, thankgod for Harry and You Sir.
A must for any car enthousiaste. It is my go to for exotic mechanical maintenance and repairs. You have a depth of knowledge and I thank you for sharing it.
Brilliant, a screwdriver and an ear that's how you know you're a engineering legend! Fab video Iain keep them coming. Has Harry collected his Lambo? might have missed that video.
Not that I’ve seen, I’m waiting for that one too 👌
The screwdriver does it once again! Would Clarkson have tried a hammer instead?
Reinier de Man every tool is a hammer to Clarckson.
My father ( now almost 90) used the screwdriver and ear on many performance cars including V12's . As a youngster, this used to fascinate me.
@@christaylor4946 me too!!!
An engineer acquaintance took me for a drive in his 246 in the year 2000. It is not a fast car, especially by today’s standards, but it is breathtakingly beautiful and truly thrilling to ride in. When I see one on the road today, I know I am seeing a true automotive enthusiast.
Very well done. I'm impressed that he's wrenching with slacks, penny loafers and a Polo. A true "get it done" guy. I'll keep watching. Thank you.
4 cameras on the car and a chase camera. You’re like a pro!!!
Only on this channel, I watched and rewatched all of the videos. Thank you, sir. Keep safe.
Another wonderful video 🙂🙂 and a great way to start my day. This is one of the top 3 classic car channels on the web today IMHO. A must watch if you’re into things automotive 🙂🙂👍🏻👍🏻
What are the other two, iyho?
What a fantastic channel this is, thank you Harry's Garage for sending me here.
Probably the nearest most of us will get to experience being in these cars.Interesting history & great to see an expert at work.
Dear Mr. Busby,
Just start with a classic that you can afford - not the cheapest one, but the best example that fits within your budget. Then work your way up the ladder by trading, adding history and sympathetic preservation, taking great photos...and don't blow your money on depreciating new cars. It's worked for us for over 30 years.
What a joy to watch. This could be prime time BBC 2.
Mr Tyrrell is back, with a Dino! YES YES YES!! Thank you Sir, for doing this to us!
Your test drive, Iain - driving the Dino on country roads on a fair weather day, with the roof panel off - sheer enjoyment!
You sir, are a true artist!
Best therapy ever..someone who is a genuine expert..could watch Ian all day.
Always a pleasure to watch your latest videos, Iain. I couldn't help but drool over those Daytona seats in the Dino - so elegant, a design classic in their own right.
I appreciate classics of all sorts, but this, one, I don't know, it really made me drool once I had seen it on the open road. A rich man's X19.
Iain Tyrrell, the 'Horse Whisperer' of classic cars! :-)
Horse *power whisperer 😉👍🏼
The Weber Whisperer!
@Andrew Ward 👌🏼Very true indeed!
There is nothing better than watching a master at his trade on a vehicle that I've always longed for. Bravo.
I could'nt have found a better Channel to fill up on all the knowledge gaps I have on classic cars, cant wait for the next motor workshop, thanks so much dear Mr. I.Tyrrell !
Very enjoyable, interesting and informative video as always Iain! Watching quality RUclips car channels such as Harry's garage and your own excellent channel adds an entirely different dimension to car enthusiasts such as myself
Not just one of the most beautiful Ferrari's ever, but one of the most beautiful cars ever made, period. Wonderful machine.
I can’t get over how much knowledge you have. It’s extraordinary!
Amazingly cool as usual! "Listen to the engine with the screwdriver, do a little magic and take a test drive with your Aviators on..."
Ian, Harry and Henry Catchpole would be the ultimate top gear team. So much credibility , knowledge and passion.
I’m really enjoying your videos. The Dino is lovely. I’m so glad I found you via Harry.
This car is what dreams are made of. It's so so classy and elegant. The shape is timeless.
Wife "What are you smiling at", Me "Tyrrell's Classic Workshop just dropped a new video"
My now late father tuned a lot of Italian multicarb cars in the 80s. Very similar type to Mr. Tyrrell. He tuned with a hose, by ear, and an old intake vacuum guage. So we always had Lamborginis. Ferrari, Dinos(Dinos are Dinos), V12 Jag E-types and XKSs, etc in the driveway. Rare breed of people. My dad when he was young, learned tuning at a British Leyland dealership. He was also in a MGB magazine ad. 😊 My first car was a 59' Triumph TR3A.
This is a brilliant channel, keep up the impressive work. You are a gifted presenter!
Directors note: Ian leans over Dino 246 GTS to adjust valve clearances with Miura and two Espadas parked casually in the background. Another wonderful video. Waiting for the next one. Thank you Ian.
This channel is my bliss, I love it , aswell as Harry's garage
The Dino, my favorite car since I watched 'The Persuaders' as a kid, nothing else comes close for styling. Thanks Iain for filming ths, as usual,
your knowledge is exceptional.
DAMN! those 18 minutes are very short 😁 This is just great I love the technical parts of these videos. Thanks
My all time favorite Ferrari (even if it’s a Dino). Been my favorite since I watch “The Persuaders” with Tony Curtis and Roger More.
Thank you for the video! Please take care and keep on sharing your passion!
Love this channel! out of interest would love to know what cars Ian has in his personal collection or daily drives has to be interesting with a man of his experience . Top job lads.
Second this.
Third...
Fourth this..
“Dr. Tyrrell to the Dino at once!” Love watching this type of surgery and the master at his work.
A classic car whisperer. Great to see him bringing these beauties back to life.
Excellent to watch, more more more please, best car channel on RUclips, your be approached by a tv production company soon 👍
Another great video. What impresses me is that Iain’s intimate knowledge of the cars that he’s working on is matched by his knowledge of the history of both the manufacturer & their marques.
This is really my favourite Ferrari. Even though she isn't one :D Such an excellent channel
In a world of modern computers and diagnostic tools, Iain uses a stethoscope to diagnose the Dino engine. Brilliant! Cheers
So interesting! Love it! Thank you Iain.
This is why customers come to Tyrell's classic. No where else is there a guy listenting to a Ferrari engine, through a screwdriver. God tier
I recall my father ( now almost 90) using the screwdriver and ear trick on many of the performance and classics that came into his garage back in the day. As a youngster it fascinated me- probably why i love Ians' videos so much.
What a joy this channel is.
It's so interesting to be shown all the detail of this. It's like seeing a master craftsman at work. delightful.
Such an icon, I remember when nobody wanted the "slow V6 ferrari" . Always loved them since I watched Tony Curtis drive one in The Persuaders as a little kid . A friend of mine owned a bodyshop and he had a customer Dino in their for a bare metal respray in Giallo Fly complete with corroded cromadora wheels , no idea if that was the original factory colour or not , the customer paid £ 70,000 for it in 2001 and he thought he had been ripped off !! . One of the bodyshop "Old boys" demonstrated to me how lead loading was done on one of the wings as they all were from factory , just mesmerising to watch . Many thanks Iain another belter sir . 👍👍👏👏
Drove past a garage for a few years from ‘73 to ‘76 where one was parked with a bale of hay on top.. (a few miles east of Hexham) enough to make you cry…
Arguably the most beautiful styled car (respecting the Maserati A6 GCS) beautifully kept by its owner and wonderfully presented by Iain - an absolute treat, thank you.
Many thanks Iain for another masterclass in video presentation, highlighting your wide ranging experience of all things relating to classic cars. As always, your knowledge on the history of these beautiful cars, together with how to restore &/or get them into tip top working order, is fascinating and informative.
I particularly enjoyed this video about the Dino 246 GTS, as this car has always been a favourite of mine ever since I was a boy, having seen one in The Persuaders tv series (showing my age now!), and has remained so ever since. Living in Sri Lanka, I doubt if I will ever get to see one of these cars in the flesh, so your video was the nearest thing I can get to actually driving one myself.
Thanks again for the good work and stay safe during these difficult times.
The car looks like it's straight off the showroom floor. Beautiful! Love the technique you use to listen to the tappets.
There is no finer car related RUclips channel (sorry Harry but I think you’ve been trumped). So easy going and informative, Iain explains things so well and the metal to drool over in the workshop is off the scale. Love it, love it, love it.
Wonderful. What a car. Lovely to see. Thanks again for posting.
Tyrrell has some serious knowledge when it comes to motors 🙏🇬🇧
I save these videos till lunchtime, always an event.Totally without equal.Need to be twice as long!
