Fun Fact: Your sense of smell is the sense most closely tied to your memory. Which is why the peppermint oil scent scene was so important to finally fully unlocking her memories.
I always wondered about this phenomenon! I’ve always called it a “memory smell” like there’s this very particular smell, a fragrance, and I can always tell it’s this Avon perfume cuz my grandma used to wear it (and then I eventually spot an old lady lol) Happens with other smells but sometimes idk or can’t remember why the smell makes me feel nostalgic or sad or sometimes happy.
Fun fact: Anastasia's singing voice is done by Liz Callaway, who also did the singing voice of Princess Odette from Swan Princess and Princess Jasmine in the Aladdin sequels!
How ironic. I was literally just listening to Once Upon A December a while ago. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. The ghosts she was dancing with were her family. The three girls around her with the red hair are her sisters. She danced with her father at the end.
Also, the boy who was walking in short steps was the Czar's son, IIRC. He had a condition which Rasputin claimed he could heal... but only if he could marry Anastasia, whom he lusted after. They found out that he was a fake or something, and was secretly out to destroy the royal line for power and control of the country (govt vs religion sort of thing). And actually the royal family wasn't all that great. They were living lavishly while their people starved, thus the revolution started.
I like this movie, but it hides the darkest part of Anastasia's life: She was killed along with her family during the Russian Revolution of 1918 by the Bolsheviks. She was 16 years old.
Even darker, they were brought to Yekaterinburg and killed in a cellar. Put against a wall and shot by soldiers, the children did not die immediately, so the soldiers had to stab them to death eventually. Ive visited that cellar because they built a church on top for people to visit. It’s such an emotional place to walk around in.
How do you know that Americans made a film about Russia: 1. Everybody calls everyone comrade. In reality it wasn't as common as portrayed in movies. It's a very official way of addressing someone and was done mainly in military or political circles. 2. Dmitry is a full name. His good friend wouldn't have called him by his full name. Shot version of Dmitry is Dima (or Mitia in the olden days). 3. On the other hand, Dmitry calls his friend by the short form... of a completely different name😆 Vlad isn't short for Vladimir, it's short for Vladislav. Volodia/Vova is short for Vladimir. Sorry for my little rant😄
@edo0girl good question 😄 one of the theories (it might not be entirely acutare though) - in old Slavonic language Vladimir was Volodimer (it is still Volodymyr in Ukrainian) hence the short form Volodia. Earlier (I dunno exactly how long ago) it became popular to make short name forms by repeating syllables (usually the first syllable, but not always), but ending the name with /a/ or /ia, 'a/ sounds (you can see the same ending in Volodia). Hence Vova😄 Other examples of the same short names formation - Natalia can be called Nana, Larisa is sometimes called L'al'a, Al'ona can be called L'ol'a. Georgiy (Russian version of George) is sometimes called Goga. However, people use these types of short name forms less and less. In fact, Vova is the only one, as far as I'm aware, that actually stuck.
@@I_am_Ravenclaw Speaking about Americans calling Russians with the wrong names...correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Black Widow from the Avengers movies supposed to be called Natalia Romanova rather than Natasha Romanoff?🤔
"So she's just kicking her out or did she choose to leave?" When kids in an orphanage like that reach the age of adulthood, they can't stay there anymore.
I've always imagined how dark and imposing Rasputin's villain song could have been if they had left the silly dancing grubs in the background out, or replaced them with some more threatening minions.
@Cee3 pOh Both Anastasia and Hunchback I feel suffer from a sense of unevenness. In Hunchback, the gargoyles, especially George Costanza gargoyle, really stick out like a sore thumb against the darker tone of literally everything else. With Anastasia, when I watched it a little over a month ago, Rasputin as a villain almost seemed unnecessary to the plot. If you were to take out the over-the-top Rasputin and his magic and all that, you would have a better film. Also, it never sat right with me that they made the villain an historical figure in a way that was very out of place. I mean, it seems like they tried to take the more serious route with the storming of the palace, for example, so I don't see why they made Rasputin, who himself was dead a year before the Romanov's died, an undead magician. Oh well sorry for the rant.😂
I was in junior high when this movie originally came out and it had a HUGE impact on my drawing style even now that I'm a professional illustrator. People recognize the similarities all the time, which amuses me to no end. It's always the cheeks in profile view. lol Also Christopher Lloyd is MASTERFUL as Rasputin.
@@JohnSmith47534 Aw, thank you so much! This movie was the sole reason i wanted a custom-made music box as a kid...unlockable by my pendant!. Fun fact. The Dream sequence with her Father's demon transformation was apparently deleted from most versions. So it just got cut off before she would 'jump'. I owned the cassette with the scene cut out haha
@@EternalAwareness Well, i guess since back then in the 90s, rules might have been different on what to show to kids. I grew up with this film, and literally didn't know it existed until i saw the original. It was also why never occurred to me, the reason that Anya was crying when Dimitri woke her up. But having the scene in made so much more sense. She experienced a nightmare before waking up, and that would have been terrifying.
They made a toy music box like the one in the movie and I had it. It also played 'Once Upon a December'. I'm 32 now and still mad I don't have it anymore lol
Literally the movie of my childhood! My grandma was a talented seamstress, and she used to sew circle skirts for all of my dresses because she knew how much I loved that Once Upon A December twirling scene in the movie. Also can we appreciate how much of a gentleman Dimitri is? He always takes on protective gestures/positions when close to Anya, even while pretending that he doesn't like her. 😊
So this is based on the real Romanov family. The whole family got shot in 1918 and it was a really sad history. The emperor Nicholas II (Anastasia's father) was the last emperor of Russia. Rasputin was also a real person. Full name Grigori Rasputin. If you see his pictures he looked really scary lol
@@olivierdubreuil-gagnon2201 Yeah, Anastasia's little brother had a condition where he bruised easily and blood didn't clot. Their mother was desperate for a cure and turned to Rasputin.
We can't treat this movie as historically accurate. Nobody knew what happened for sure, so what was done was take advantage of a legend to make an entertaining movie. We know the sad truth of it all in the present, but it doesn't make the movie any less epic.
You also actually find out after they were murdered and buried they were dug up and moved numerous times, and they separated the body's to try and take suspension off t he guards....
My grandfather's family fled Russia (It was then, it's Ukraine now) a few years before the revolution happened. They could see what was coming and got outta dodge while the getting was good. I still have their immigration certificate from Ellis Island.
That's amazing. My boyfriend is Russian and his family actually left in 1992 after the Soviet collapsed. I'm so glad his family were able to start a new life in my country. The funny thing is his name is Dmitri and when we first met I said "oh your name is Dmitri? Just like in Anastasia" 😂 this movie was such a big part of my childhood
@@erinnadia0409 I'm glad his family was finally able to get out! I worked with a Dmitri for a while. But he wasn't a particularly nice person, unfortunately. Bot mean or anything. Just socially inept, made disparaging comments a lot, and was a bit of a chauvinist (and I'm not the type to be easily offended, but perpetually comparing me to his 5 ex-wives got old fast).
Anyone else watch the movie before reading about her actual story and ended up becoming heart broken when you realize she never had the wonderful adventure in this movie at all instead dying tragically
Does anybody else just cry automatically when Nick gets emotional? I do. Its a combination of the nostalgia and how appreciative Nick is of these classic movies, it hits right in my feels dude.
So the nightmare was her brother, three sisters and the father. Her brother walked like that because in real life he had a type of disability that he couldn’t walk (can’t remember the type) but Rasputin basically used her real family for that
Genetical illnesses as haemophilia were actually pretty common in aristocratic families and reason for many of noble families diminishing. One assumed reason for this is the high level of marriage inbetween relatives in order to 'keep the blood clean'
Fun fact: Young Anastasia is voiced by Kristen Dunst, but her young signing voice is Lacy Chabert and While Christopher Loyd voiced Rasputin, his singing voice was provided by veteran voice actor Jim Cummings.
@@rexjdk Yep and Vlad is voiced by Kelsey Grahmer (Frasier, Sideshow Bob, Beast from x-men) Sophie is voiced by Bernadette Peters (voice of Rita from Animainiacs) and Bartok was voiced by Hank Azaria of simpsons fame.
Yes I met Christopher and jim couple years ago i had them both sign a 11x17 for this movie they both said they signed very few for this movie I find that a bit sad
Anastasia will always be my absolute favourite animate movie ever. A lot of people put it down as inaccurate but it's a fictional story, not a historical documentary. Everything in this movie is perfection. The characterization, the realistic romance between the protagonists unlike falling in love at first sight, a strong and sassy female protagonist who stands up for herself, incredible music, interesting character development and the visuals are breathtaking. It's drawn to perfection. They've put so much attention to detail like Anastasia's brother's slight limp near the end of Once Upon A December is accurate. Anastasia's sassy personality is also historically accurate even though she was much younger in real life. When Anastasia's whole family's ghosts dance during the song, it's bone chilling even more so because of what actually happened. The longing in her voice is so powerful. Also Dimitri is the hottest animated character ever. I still have a crush on him to this day lol. For me this is pure perfection. I love this movie so much. It'll always remain my favourite.
Anya and Dmitri have one of my fav animated love stories of all time! It wasn't love at first sight, and they had to grow to really respect and trust each other in a short amount of time. And it's almost believable, too, which you don't get often in animated movies haha. They'll always be one of my favorite animated couples, right up there with Flynn and Rapunzel, and Aladdin and Jasmine!
I don't understand how someone can call this relationship "almost believable" and then they bring up Aladdin and Jasmine like that was believable in any way shape or form LOL Aladdin is literally a movie about a deadbeat stalker getting the girl even after he lies to her about every aspect of his life, even his own name. If Aladdin's plot were to be put into a movie today it would be a horror movie with Aladdin as some mouth breather still living in his parents basement, Jasmine would be the sweet girl next door, and the Dark Web would be the only Genie he needs.
@@KupcakeKitten I wasn't saying that the other two were very believable, I was just saying that I love them as well. Not comparing the types of relationship at the end there, just stating which couples are my favs.
Just rewatch Tangled and Anastasia back to back. I realize how similar Eugene-Rapunzel and Dimitri-Anya! But for me I still like Dimitri-Anya better because of the realness in their relationship
@@dre_ocean yeah lol I personally love both Tangled and Anastasia and Both Dimitri and Anya/Rapunzel and Flynn equally…maybe I have something for the lost princess X Thief trope lol
Dude, you've legit turned into one of my favorite reactions channels just from how much you enjoy these movies and like are willing to be emotional. I love hearing you compliment the scenery, animation and everything and just like it's so wholesome and nice and it's a great little break from the real world stuff atm lol I really hope to see you react to Barefoot Gen some day, you were like the first thing that came into my head when I finished watching it cause I was like "holy fuck I'd love to see his reaction to this" sksks
Me too! I legit think it's just so wholesome and pure. It's nice to see a guy enjoy and get emotional over not only an animated movie, but one that centers around found family and romance. I'm finding a number of male centric reactors that are like this on RUclips, and it's so great.
My favorite reaction channel as well. Seeing his expressions is so awesome, though I kinda feel bad for him for missing so many of these epic movies and not having them as childhood memories.

Just a fun fact: I was born exactly 100 after Anastasia, even in the same month, in the same country, obviously, and I was even named after her) That’s not the only reason I love her and that movie, but that does it, too) Also, just for information: in Russia Anya and Anastasia are different names, Anya is a form of Anna, and Anastasia’s most popular short form is Nastya, but in English it sounds similar to the word nasty, and so they had to call her differently.
Ooooh I didn't know that they had to change it to Anya because of that. Hello fellow russian speaker!! I was obsessed with the romanov family for a long time as a kid because of this movie hahah.
There was a long period of time where I forgot about this movie, but I NEVER forgot the visual of the ballroom ghosts descending from the paintings and onto the dance floor.
Fun fact: in Russia, "Once Upon A December" is played during the prom✌️ When I had mine, we waltzed in the great hall✨ Another fact: the bridge in the end was named after Alexander the III, Anastasia's grandfather)
I always cry in Once Upon A December... the scene where the spirits and Nicholas comes to dance with his daughter... It just pulls on my heartstrings, maybe it's because I connect with her story kind of, but I know my real father is alive and I hope to see him someday~
I remember my sister being surprised by the way Rasputin was portrayed in this movie. Her son has Hemophilia so she was reading up on the history of the bleeding disorder. she had learned Rasputin was the only healer to ease Anastasia's brother Alexei's pain from 'the royal disease' as it became known.
I can't say I am surprised, since there are several historians that argue that Rasputins close relationship with the Tzar and his family was a large part of the reason for why the country turned against the imperial rulers. There are of course several historians that claim the exact oposite too. But going with the theory that Rasputin indirectly caused fall of the Tzar I can see how a movie studio could turn that into Rasputin wishing for their demise, and using his magic (which of course was more "smoke and mirrors" in reality) to achive that. And while a lot about Rasputins life is hear say he was probably not the greatest man, even though the imperial family seemed to believe that he was. The church wasn't impressed with him, a bishop even launched an inquest into his activities, accusing him of spreading false doctrines. It didn't help that Rasputin was accused of accepting bribes and sexual favors as well as raping several of his female followers. He even was suspected of using his influence over the tsar in a political manner (which is part of the reason he was murdered) and was rumored to be having an affair with the tsarina. But I do love the nod to real life in the begining of this movie, where Rasputin "dies" by falling through the ice. Because Rasputins body was actually thrown into a river and found frozen under the ice after he was murdered. Sorry, I'm done ranting now 😂
People, especially children, often have difficulty with memory after traumatic events - that's how I've always explained Anastasia's memory loss to myself. It was probably easier for her to forget. Love this movie so much - thanks for the reaction!
Hello! May I suggest The Road to El Dorado, unless you've watched it? Because that is such an underrated movie and my entire childhood, haha. Also songs are by Elton John^^ Oh, and maybe The Black Cauldron? That's the one Disney movie they pretend they never made because it was "too dark".
Awesome Matt I love The Swan Princess. “What else is there?” Shook me to my core, and growing up and while dating I’d be reminded of it. The first time as a kid I really thought about how some people only look at/ care about the surface level. Also, Black Cauldron’s villain is a bit… lacking for me personally (Rasputin works because he’s super evil but he’s sort of having fun in a way, enjoying hatching the plans, but the Black Cauldron’s is just evil, no fun, so it’s… not as interesting), but my fiancé and I still end up talking like Gerghie on and off for months after we watch it. 😂 I am firmly convinced Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings adaptation is strongly inspired by him. 🤣
@@AmaraJordanMusic Uhh why bother wanting him to react to those movies if you're going to spoil? Going into detail why you didn't like the villains and what the message of the movies are is still a spoiler even if you don't give a summary of the movie. Not to mention saying "it's just evil, no fun, not as interesting" is a spoiler because saying what you think about the movie will set expectations. Also, leaving, byeee
Awesome reaction, Nick! I was obsessed with this movie when I was little that when I found out the real history behind it, I started to fall in love with history books even more. People around me started with the usual "Don't expect it to be like the movie", "You do know that's inaccurate, right?" How was that a bad thing? I asked them. The movie was one interpretation, not claiming to be the real one. Same thing happened with Hercules (1997), I didn't expect the film to be the actual story, I just wanted to know where it came from.
There is no better villain than Tim Curry's Hexxus in Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. I haven't seen anyone react to it yet and I don't think it's Disney, but it stars Robin Williams, Samantha Matthis and Christian Slater along with Tim Curry in a fantastic role. Please PLEASE add it to your list, it's MAGICAL.
Finally people are reacting to this masterpiece! A while ago I couldn't find a single reaction and know youtubers are finally starting to react to this. Thank you for your reaction ❤️
Once you know how close Anastasia was to her dad in real life, her dancing with her dad in Once Upon A December kind of hurts to look at. He adored her and she doesn't even remember that he was her dad, even when she's having a major memory breakthrough, and even in the movie's much nicer version of events, he's dead and she'll never get to have that bond again. ...hold on I'm going to go text my dad and let him know I love him.
Hearing about this in history class is what got me interested in history and extremist movements. Of course it was way different from this movie but all of the stuff going on at this time period is freaking insane! Anastasia and her family were real. The family looking for her and only finding imposters was real and the revolution was real. Unfortunately, there was no happy ending to her story.😥 Even Rasputin was real and super creepy! If you haven't already you should react to the Oversimplified videos on WW1 and the Russian revolutions.
I mean, Rasputin was a "sexual deviant" and had a few non flattering comments in his time But i wouldn't say he was creepy, and he definitely was not a wizard And he also was like the main thing that kept the tsar in power
@@baalsagol346 Lol I know he wasn't a wizard. I'm just saying he was a weirdo creeper who probably wouldn't even be allowed around children in modern day. The "religious sect" that he was a part of was basically just a bunch of sexual deviants.
I'm personally more intrigued by myths and legends but this movie got me really interested in the events surrounding Rasputins murder, the revolution and the murder of the imperial family. Possibly because there is so many different versions of what happened and how it happened that it's almost like a myth... There are some things we might never get all the facts about. As I got oldet one of the rumors in particular stuck with me and disgusted me. Rasputins alleged affair with the tsarina AND rumours of him getting s*xual favours from the tzars daughters Olga and Tatyana. So I can definitely agree on the super creepy part!
I’ve always been intrigued by the story of the last Czar and his family. Definitely some good history to look into Thank you for reacting to this! Such an underrated classic!!!!
I absolutely love this movie! The real story is so sad, Anastasia and her entire family, their close servants, and their dogs were all shot and had their skulls bashed in by the butt of the murderers' guns. They were flat out murdered.
Don Bluth seemed to want to show proof that he could make a Disney movie. He was on Disney's (failed) Black Cauldron project which has dark undertones too and the veteran animators of the company didn't believe in the rising animators that Bluth was a part of so he and a bunch more rising animators cut ties to the Disney company to make their own company.
Man "anya" is so 90s in her attitude/character and I hope we can get more like her one day Fun fact there is at least one part of Rasputin that's been preserved over the years(but I don't know if I should say)
Two of my favorites two days in a row! Jackpot! I was so excited to see this one in theaters. They showed off the staircase animation on TV and I was psyched. It didn't disappoint.
Told ya you'd love it. Great characters, phenomenal songs, and I forgot how gorgeous the visuals were. Rasputin is both fun and scary. And you gotta adore the chemistry between Dimitri and Anastasia. I could watch them bicker all day 😂
Once Upon a December is one of my favorite songs! The melody just gets stuck in my head every once in a while and it takes me a bit to figure out what I'm humming and remember where it came from lol "Things I almost remember..."
I love your reactions! Your excitement and fascination with the music and scenery is so endearing. You should watch Titan AE! It's another Don Bluth film with similar art style, but it's not a musical and a little more grown up than Anastasia.
I never watch reaction videos, especially to movies. But I found your Prince of Egypt reaction and something about your facial expressions, the look in your eyes and commentary while watching feels so genuine. Now I’m binging all your reactions lol
Rasputin has such a reputation, for the 1966 movie The Mad Monk (which was about him), they handed out fake Rasputin beards as a gimmick at the theater entrance, to "protect you from the forces of evil," while you watched the movie. So people - men and women - would wear them in the theater, while the movie played.
Okay, so, some historical facts: the grandmother was actually a Danish princess, born Princess Dagmar but changed her name to Maria Feodorovna when she married the Russian Tzar. After the Russian Revolution, she went to UK to stay with her sister, the then queen dowager of the UK and then later back to Denmark until her death in 1925 or '26, I think. None of the girls claiming to be Anastacia ever met her. This is also why she isn't included in the curse.
I have my misgivings with the film's adjustments to history, since the revolution was more than just the evil peasants ruining the fun of the nice royals (Rasputin himself is a fascinating historical figure). But I still like a lot of the movie. Visually you can tell the filmmakers really did their research and the music is great (love that villain song!).
Ahhhhh yes!!!! This was my fave as a kid. My sister and I used to rewatch it so much, and when the credits rolled we would dance around the living room and sing along to it!
I absolutely love this movie and it was my favorite as a child. It's probably one of the things that started my interest in history and Romanovs in particular. For anyone that likes this movie I really recommend the musical version. The music, story, and actors are amazing and it tries to be a little more accurate to history (that means no Rasputin as a villain though but Gleb is good too)
If you love musicals they recently made this movie a Broadway show that’s a little more historically accurate. Idk how much of it is online but it’s worth looking into that’s for sure! I went in 2019 and loved it 😍 song suggestion: in a crowd of thousands it’s a beautiful adaptation to Anya and Dimitri realizing who the other actually is
I was literally thinking a few days ago how nice would that be if you watched "Anastasia". Thank you so much, I enjoyed it a lot! It's one of my favourite movies of all times and I really like to watch your reaction videos to relax.
There was a stage musical made out of this movie that is also really, really good. The mystical parts and Rasputin are replaced with more historical elements of the Russian Revolution, and of course more songs are added. There is also a little more 'is she/isn't she', although it's still told as her definitely being Annastasia. Certainly worth seeing if you can, though.
Hi Nick! So to answer your question about the orphanage, my understanding is that once a child turns 18 years old, they get kicked out because they're considered "adults" legally. Hope this helps and I'm glad you're watching this movie :D I used to have a doll of Anastasia, no idea what happened to it. :/
You know, I think Atlantis would be a good movie to watch after this one. Simply because the release dates between these two isn't that big (1997 and 2001). But that's just my personal opinion and I really love Atlantis: The Lost Empire ^^
The animation job on Anastasia is so marvelous, even with the rotoscopy the whole ecense on each character and the physics on clothes, as an independent comic artist myself this while movie was my sole inspiration, all the artistic work and one of the first animated movies using 3D is so amazing to me, I rewatch this movie every year just to get amazed on the titanic work that must've been this animation process
If you're interested in another great animated movie from the 80's/90's era I recommend An American Tail. It has the same directors and producers as Anastasia, so if you liked one you'll probably like the other
So happy you reacted to this. It's one of my favorite animated films. Love that you appreciated her clothes as much as I do haha. The blue dress she wears is still my favorite of all time. I wish it were a real dress lol.
This is one of my favorite movies ever since I first saw it as a three year old (apparently, this movie is a core memory for me) and I ended up naming my service dog Anya after this movie. Still love this even now that I'm 27.
I love how you are so in awe with the animation. It is such a beautiful love and I adore this movie so much. And of course the score and songs are great as well. This is a movie I have watched so much when I was younger so I am glad you enjoyed it!
This movie use to scare the heck out of me when I was little, as you can see why! Like I remember my kindergarten class watching this with another class and I told the teacher I didn't like the movie, so she said I could just chill in the reading section. I could still see the movie where I sat, but at least I had the option not to watch. But when I got older, I gave the movie a try and now love it! Since I never actually watched it watched it when I was little, it was like I was watching it for the first time. The scene when she's in the ballroom singing Once Upon a December and dancing with the visions/ghosts of her sisters and father gets me every singe time! Tears come out! This poor girl is in her home, dancing with her family who love her and miss her, and she doesn't realize who they are!
Anastasia is one of my favorite movies ever, the song "once upon a December" really describes the real life of Anastasia, somehow it makes me sad just by imagining the night when she and her family were murdered😭😭😭
Loved this! I used to watch this movie on repeat as a kid. Such a sad history. Rasputin was so evil and the Romanov family suffered greatly. In reality, Miss Anastasia unfortunately didn’t live past the age of 18.
I love your reactions so much purely because you're not afraid to show emotion! That's one of the things that make your reactions so enjoyable to watch because you experience the emotions we all did when we first watched these movies.
Two reactions in a day, I love it!!!! When I was a kid my first time in a movie theater was watching this movie, since then I love Anastasia story and the Romanov family, so sad thought, the real story.
I know A LOT of people prefer Don Bluth's older movies (Land Before Time, Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, and even All Dogs go to Heaven), but this is still my fav of his. The reunion scene between Anastasia and her grandmother always got me. I had lost my maternal grandma in 1994 when I was 12, so this movie had a huge effect on me for that reason.
Love that movie. I love how it took place in Russia, Poland, and France. I am Polish and my sister lives in France with her children. I traveled to Russia many times. It's one of the best animated movie that I have ever seen! Keep up the good work man!
thank you thank you thank you for this reaction. Literally my favorite reaction of yours. This is my favorite animated movie of all times, has such a special place in my heart. You just looked like a kid enjoying the visuals, the characters and the story and it was really awesome to see you appreciate it! If you liked the songs I would recommend you listen to the Anastasia Broadway musical songs cause they are pretty awesome and have some originals songs too! I think you would def love them! And Anastasia (my favorite princess of all time) and Dmitri are literally my fav couple out there. Their relationship development is just something else and I love it. This was such a great and honest reaction you actually made my so happy and made me cry a bit at the end! Can't thank you enough for this reaction, really. Thank you so much ❤️🥺 Also would love to recommend you two movies, for visuals and costumes you really have to watch "Marie Antoinette" starring Kirsten Dunst in 2008, the visuals, the costumes also won an oscar that year and the second movie would have to be "Rebeca" the original one is from the 1950's directed by Hitchcock, but they recently made another version starring Lily James and I think you would love that film as well! The story is just amazing! you would be blown out! ❤️🥺

THAT'S WHY! I never realized that before!
Its sad that the live action one made it about a nervous cough that she had as the Peppermint memory made so much more sense.

How ironic. I was literally just listening to Once Upon A December a while ago. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. The ghosts she was dancing with were her family. The three girls around her with the red hair are her sisters. She danced with her father at the end.
I get chills every time I hear it!
@@mynameisnonofyourconcern8685 There is an ethereal version here on RUclips with just the music and some enhancements and it's super gorgeous
Her voice is just so majestic! Even if some people don't like this movie, they will adore the songs.
it's also really beautiful in russian with the more traditional instruments
I like this movie, but it hides the darkest part of Anastasia's life:
She was killed along with her family during the Russian Revolution of 1918 by the Bolsheviks.
@@Pheertjee The reason the children didn't die immediately is the bullets were deflected by gems sewn into the princesses' dresses.
Her corpse wasn't found for a very long time too.
@@AuthorZaraHoffman well, yes, but I think Alexei pretty much died quickly
@@magggmae Yes. Only the daughters lived a bit because of the gems in their dresses.
How do you know that Americans made a film about Russia:
That's very interesting!
this is such good info to have! they really do just say comrade every 10 seconds in american versions 😂🤦🏻♀️
🤣🤣🤣Right)))
@@I_am_Ravenclaw Speaking about Americans calling Russians with the wrong names...correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Black Widow from the Avengers movies supposed to be called Natalia Romanova rather than Natasha Romanoff?🤔

"I thought it was a Disney film." Well it is technically now after Disney bought out fox lol
But long before that happened, many people really believed it was a Disney film.
@@lulystalgianature2968 I think that was because some of the makers of this movie used to work for Disney before
@@lulystalgianature2968 I know I was one of those kids lol Legit Anastasia was my favorite Disney princess before I was told she wasn't part of Disney
They only own a percentage of Fox, not all of it :D
I know it'll never happen since it's gotta be Disney-made, but imagine if they made Anya a Disney princess. I wonder how Russia would react to that.
I've always imagined how dark and imposing Rasputin's villain song could have been if they had left the silly dancing grubs in the background out, or replaced them with some more threatening minions.
Maybe they added the silly minions and stuff because the song itself is pretty intense... to me its almost like that song in the hunchback

7 year old me had the biggest crush on Dimitri lmao. I still sing Once Upon A December from time to time. Her dresses are iconic.
Really? I get that It was scary but to cut it seemes a bit of a stretch.
I remember watch this as a kid, thai ver. of this movie didnt cut demon scene out. I love this movie so much, still can sing all songs.

While Rasputin was certainly a scary dude, he WAS apparently really good to the Romanov kids. They all seemed to really like him.
@@olivierdubreuil-gagnon2201 Yeah, Anastasia's little brother had a condition where he bruised easily and blood didn't clot. Their mother was desperate for a cure and turned to Rasputin.

"Just go in for the kiss...DANG it, Pooka!" I'm sorry, but that killed me, because YES. Every damn time that part gets me...

Just a fun fact: I was born exactly 100 after Anastasia, even in the same month, in the same country, obviously, and I was even named after her) That’s not the only reason I love her and that movie, but that does it, too)
Also, just for information: in Russia Anya and Anastasia are different names, Anya is a form of Anna, and Anastasia’s most popular short form is Nastya, but in English it sounds similar to the word nasty, and so they had to call her differently.
I prefer Anya anyway. It's pretty, although I know it sounds shallow.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen you get completely mesmerized by a princess before. Was really entertaining to see, Anastasia is beautiful 😂😂
The Once Upon A December scene is one of the best animated scenes in movie history :)

I mean, Rasputin was a "sexual deviant" and had a few non flattering comments in his time
But i wouldn't say he was creepy, and he definitely was not a wizard
And he also was like the main thing that kept the tsar in power
@@baalsagol346 Lol I know he wasn't a wizard. I'm just saying he was a weirdo creeper who probably wouldn't even be allowed around children in modern day. The "religious sect" that he was a part of was basically just a bunch of sexual deviants.
I'm personally more intrigued by myths and legends but this movie got me really interested in the events surrounding Rasputins murder, the revolution and the murder of the imperial family. Possibly because there is so many different versions of what happened and how it happened that it's almost like a myth... There are some things we might never get all the facts about.

Your reaction to Rasputin’s eye coming off is priceless 😂👌🏻
I absolutely love this movie and it was my favorite as a child. It's probably one of the things that started my interest in history and Romanovs in particular. For anyone that likes this movie I really recommend the musical version. The music, story, and actors are amazing and it tries to be a little more accurate to history (that means no Rasputin as a villain though but Gleb is good too)
At the end of the year, you should do a tier list of all the movies you watched in 2021 from your fav to least fav :)
Plan on doing something similar to that😊
What's really neat is that the music box is a real thing people could get. It looks exactly like the one in the movie and even plays that song.

It's just IMPOSSIBLE don't get goosebumps when you hear "Once upon a december" song

Yeah, I didn't have a crush on Milo but he is really cute~
The animation job on Anastasia is so marvelous, even with the rotoscopy the whole ecense on each character and the physics on clothes, as an independent comic artist myself this while movie was my sole inspiration, all the artistic work and one of the first animated movies using 3D is so amazing to me, I rewatch this movie every year just to get amazed on the titanic work that must've been this animation process
If you're interested in another great animated movie from the 80's/90's era I recommend An American Tail. It has the same directors and producers as Anastasia, so if you liked one you'll probably like the other
"It just always snows there"
As someone who lived two years in St. Petersburg...can confirm.
One of my favorite animated films. But depressing fact. She was found dead with her brother.
So happy you reacted to this. It's one of my favorite animated films. Love that you appreciated her clothes as much as I do haha. The blue dress she wears is still my favorite of all time. I wish it were a real dress lol.
I absolutely adore how you are pleading with the characters: Dimitri is a good guy!!!
"Oh sure, blame the bat, what the heck. We're easy targets." - Bartok
The true story of the Romanov family broke my heart when I heard it as a child
Anastasia is one of my favorite movies ever, the song "once upon a December" really describes the real life of Anastasia, somehow it makes me sad just by imagining the night when she and her family were murdered😭😭😭
This movie was literally my entire childhood, glad you finally got to see it!!!
Loved this! I used to watch this movie on repeat as a kid. Such a sad history. Rasputin was so evil and the Romanov family suffered greatly. In reality, Miss Anastasia unfortunately didn’t live past the age of 18.

:*DANG IT POOKA, DANG IT*
PERFECT DESCRIPTION--
the real story about Anastasia and her family is so sad .... and I, just like many others, am crazy about Dimitri ^_^
“what a colourful city” said no one ever about Saint-Petersburg
That makes no sense at all, Saint Petersburg is absolutely beautiful.
@@Pheertjee yeah it is! But it is the grayest city in existence also lol
always rains here
it literally rains right now as I’m writing it lol
This movie was my favorite as a kid. So beautiful and magical with amazing music. And Dimitri 😍
One of my absolute favorite movies ever 🙏 Anastasia is just... wow.
Okay this was the purest thing I’ve ever seen 😂 Love your reviews!
