It’s almost a shame this movie is actually owned by Disney now, because though it’s always been Disney-esque there’s a kind of grunge to it that you won’t find in most of the Disney Princess movies, and that grunge showed through in her character as well; it gave the movie a personality it wouldn’t have had under Disney. The movies that came closest-I think-are Atlantis and, even more so, Treasure Planet (and not just because Dimitri looks like kinda like Milo and especially Jim Hawkins).
Meg Ryan was the perfect choice for this role. She's so sassy and sarcastic. The way she says "Then stop bossing me around" made me laugh so hard when I was a kid.
I can not express you all how much this movie means to me. I was OBSESSED with it as a kid. I would watch it at least once, every single week, and I would force my whole family to watch and enjoy it with me. I memorized songs, dialogues and even the backgrounds and character designs, I even taught some friends the songs! And they would ask me trivia questions about the real Romanov family. I'm 21 and I still enjoy playing my old VHS copy of this movie. Anya's personality and her relationship with Dimitri have stayed with me and influenced the woman I am today. This movie is a real treasure, I love it way too much.
