One thing I admire about this movie is the focus on the mother-daughter relationship. You know pretty well by now that Disney has a habit of killing off parents. Especially mothers. So it's nice to see this relationship put into the spotlight for once.

One of Pixar’s most underrated flicks!
I loved this film since it came out in 2012, but I personally think it felt too rushed. Like it could’ve expanded on its subplot a bit more in regards to this ancient kingdom and Mordu.
The cast did a phenomenal job though! You got Harry Potter stars in the likes of Hagrid, Prof. Trelawney, Molly Weasley, and Helena Ravenclaw in on this movie! It truly earned its Oscar win!
EDIT: And that dedication at the end with the wisp for the late Steve Jobs. What a way to acknowledge him as he did play a role in Pixar’s studio tools. Respect ✊

This movie is such a good mother / daughter bonding plot. I remember hearing that one of Pixar's rules of storytelling (when they initially split off from Disney) was to never have a character sing an "I Want" song. So Disney movies like Frozen, Tangled, Moana, etc sing about their motivations/aspirations. Contrast with Wreck It Ralph, Inside Out, WALL-E, Coco and Brave - there's music the audience can perceive and music in the environment that the characters can hear or play/sing, but none of the main characters declare what they want in song form.

Something about the relationship of the mother and daughter feels a lot more real and human than a lot of the parent relationships depicted in Disney films/Pixar. Probably my favourite Mothersday film to watch with my mum as it reminds me a lot of our relationship and even my relationship with my dad. This film has grown on me more as I've gotten older. But the music and plot is something I've loved always since the first time I saw it, a lot darker than some of Pixar's other works.

I loved the deeper aspects of the "Mend the bond" aspect of the spell. Mainly because it had, at least, four layers to it. The first being the tapestry that Meirda tore with her fight with her Mother. The second was the relationship with her Mother, that they BOTH tore by being too prideful to compromise with, or really listen to each other. The third was the bond between the four clans that Meirda almost broke, with her decision to shoot for her own hand. She almost ended the alliance and started a war. And lastly, by killing Mor'du. she freed his spirit, and restored his mind, and mended that last breach that he had caused, so many years ago.

trivia: Film Takes place in 10-11th century Scotland
    Anachronisms
-The scene where Merida's dress splits, and reveals her corset, Corsets didn't come into fashion until Elizabethan times, approximately 600 years after the movie's apparent setting.
-Merida is depicted with a recurve bow and quiver which medieval britain never used.
    - Merida' horse seems to be a Shire or a Clydesdale, But neither of these breeds existed in 10th cen.
    - The Kilt wasn't invented til the 18th century

Brave is up there in my top 5 Disney movies. It is so good and so underrated! I really like how it doesn't involve a romantic love story and focused on a familial relationship that is so relatable. This movie is so refreshing compared to a lot of the other princess stories. The comedic moments are on point, but the emotional turmoil between mother and daughter really hits hard. This one doesn't seem to have achieved the same popularity as some other Disney films, but I think that's because it's less childish and more well-balanced with things that will resonate stronger with adults than with little kids. I am in awe at the quality of the storytelling in this movie. They set the scene so beautifully, you feel like you are transported there. I just think they did such a good job making this film so immersive for the audience. I love it when a film can do that for me. It's kind of rare for animated films to do that for me, so kudos to the filmmakers who worked on this one.

Love the reaction, Nick! Also, the reference in Wreck-It-Ralph to Merida being from "the other studio" is based on how the movie is Disney-Pixar, instead of just Disney like the other princesses. :)

Brave is a Disney movie, but as it was produced by Pixar Studios, Merida really was from "the other studio" in the Wreck It Ralph sequel. Using it as the reason no one could decipher her Scottish accent was brilliant though. XD

Even though the whole "change into a bear to learn a lesson" is, oddly, done a bunch what I find the best about this one is that the diplomatic mother has to fight and the fighting daughter has to be diplomatic to undo the spell it's a very well done telling of "walking a mile in my shoes".
I had a very similar situation with both my mum and dad, ironically, about who I was dating where things did get out of control at times. I'll never forget it because I learned they were right and I was wrong but we are all better for it to have happened. 😊
It's very clever how they incorporated Merida voicing that, yes, this IS all her fault, into the spell being broken, notice that throughout the movie Merida constantly says "it's not my fault!" until she comes face to face with irreversible consequences that she realizes she has to take responsibility for her selfish act and accept that she, not only lost her mum, but the kingdom lost its Queen, her brothers are lost under the same spell, and her dad lost his wife 😮 its one of the reasons the scene is so powerful.❤❤

I think both the "Young Princess Chafing Against Expectations" story and the "Family Member Turns Into Large Mammal" story are both pretty good, but they kind of undermine each other when put together and keeps them from being the best version of themselves.
