      People don't realize that being a queen is a hell of a responsibility. It is a job for life and that life can be VERY short if you're a bad queen. People have this crazy notion that queens just get to laze about eating cake whenever they want. Look how well that turned out for Marie Antoinette.
      They ran the household/castle, often managing the finances of the whole kingdom. They have to be the perfect model of grace, diplomacy and righteousness. Kingdoms can crumble and go to war over a single, rude comment. If other nations don't respect you, they will walk all over you to the detriment of your people. An uneducated queen is a completely useless queen. Useless queens are easily assassinated and replaced queens.
      Eleanor is a good queen and a good mom. Not a perfect mom by any stretch but still wanting to do what was best for her daughter and her kingdom. She must be queen first, mother second.
      People that hate Eleanor have no idea what she must do as queen. Merida is a right shit for simply refusing to see what her mother is trying to teach her. Eleanor was teaching her court survival skills.

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 3 года назад +37

      @@mokko759 And as we saw later it all came into use later, in her speech to the three clans, the vocal lessons and the history lessons, everything Elinor had trained her for, keeping a kingdom in tact. And I think Merida realised that as well, realised that it wasn't 'all for naught'.

Was Mer just a spoiled child that just needed to listen to her mother, or was Ella not listening to her daughter and only caring about herself? (ya ken meaning you know, caber being some sort of log that you throw in the games), no one knows what he was saying when he was chatting to the other lords sons (kind of liked how they seemed to get on and how unconcerned they were with the whole marriage ceremony), the third thing he said was "It's just nay (not) fair making us fight for the hand of a girl who doesn't want a bit of it, ken?"

    Unpopular opinion: Merida is the villain of the film. Mor'du was a baddie but he was no real villain. He could have been cut from the film and almost nothing would have changed.
    Merida, on the other hand, is literally the cause of everything that goes wrong in the film. She insults chieftains allied with her father, nearly causing a war, shirks her responsibilities as a noble lady, purposely ignores everything her mother and queen is trying to teach her, she does not consider anybody else's feelings or positions. Not to mention the fact she literally pays a witch for a spell to use against her mother. A spell which she has no idea what it will do, doesn't give a shit about her mom's safety or how the rest of her family will react to Eleanor being a different person. Hell, that spell could have been straight up poison that changed her mom from a living person to a dead one and Merida didn't give a damn so long as Merida could continue being a selfish, disrespectful shit. Merida was just more concerned with winning the I'm-So-Hard-Done-By Award than anything else. Didn't want to marry? Fine, deal with that in a way that doesn't cause a war or poison your mother.
    Yes, there is character growth as she realized everything her mom tried to do for her really was for her benefit but that still doesn't change the fact she was a horrible child.

    At 5:44 , when you say you were taught not to drink that water, you are able to drink it depending on where it's coming from and what body of water it is. If it's a waterfall in the mountains, it's safe to drink if it's coming out of the mountain, but if it's coming from the very top, then check the top if there's anything up there that is toxic. But if it's a river, always check upstream if there's something in the water as well. Like if there's some type of dead animal in the river upstream, don't drink, if it's a weird color, don't drink, and you could use water testing kits as well, to test for toxic chemicals. I'd say just search up this stuff. It's well known and I'm sure you could learn a lot from some cites

    18:43 Scots weren't Vikings. Also the reason one of the sons was hard to understand is because he was just speaking Scottish Gaelic which as funny as the joke may be, makes no sense since all of them would have spoken Gaelic at this point.

    • @KingBuster90
      @KingBuster90 3 года назад

      I've not seen the Gaelic version, but he's probably speaking some Scots English
      but because it's the English version it's been reversed & I don't speak Gaelic, although I have tried
      & I understood like 90% of what he said, I think it's mostly really thick Scots

    • @lunaproductions13
      @lunaproductions13 3 года назад

      @@KingBuster90 Oh ok then my mistake I guess, thanks for the correction. Regardless, the other characters would've realistically probably understood him still right?
      EDIT: I looked into it and supposedly he is speaking in the Doric dialect so maybe they wouldnt understand him if they didnt know the dialect then.

    29:19 I don’t know-I kinda sympathize with her in that she was really reluctant to give out any spells and basically warned Merida that she always had unsatisfied customers, but Merida pushed her to “help” anyway. (Though, to be fair, the witch could have just said no.)
    Also, the fact that she turned them both into a bear makes me think that…maybe she’s not all-powerful? Maybe that’s the only eay she knows to change someone (though she, again, could have mentioned that beforehand if that’s the case). In further support of this, her magic seems to have a bit of a mind of its own (cf. the way the knives turned against her). Maybe it just usually listens to her, but she’s not in total control of it?

    ok as a scot i have deciphered that the guy who spoke in the thick accent said: "if he were a wee bitty closer i could lob a caber at him ken?" which means "if he was a little bit closer I could throw a caber (large wooden pole) at him you know?"

    🛡 I say we don't thank the witch, per se, but we don't blame her either because she wasn't gonna do it. Merida refused to take no for an answer. And maybe I'm biased because I work in mental health care, but they don’t need a witch. They need a family therapist to help them be able to listen to each other and find compromise.

    26:52 "Where did she learn how to throw hands like this?" nowhere, but at that moment the only thing she was thinking about was protecting her daughter, and a mother that is scared for her child's safety can often tap into something called "hysterical strength". "Hysterical strength" is a display of extreme strength by humans (well, bear in this case lol), beyond what is believed to be normal, usually occurring when people are in life-and-death situations. The classic anecdotal example is of parents lifting vehicles to rescue their trapped children.

    I love this movie too man! I sometimes imagine what the story would've been like if Merida had a crossover with LINK (The Legend of Zelda) I think Merida would've definitely liked a pretty boy forest warrior like HIM! lol Anyway her mother really needed to stop being such a stick in the mud and just let her daughter do her own thing, at least her father was more understanding about Merida than she was.

    Oof, this movie just makes me wonder if the Queen touched a bit home?? I wasn’t close to my mother until I was an much older. The Queen didn’t used to be a good mom. She was always a good one, she just had some room to improve. You don’t have to be a parent to understand a dynamic between parent & child. The difference of how a relationship develops as the child grows older & what the parent (in their perspective) find best for their kids... Idk that’s just me. Never found the Queen to be prick...

    Just fyi, they're not Vikings. the Vikings invaded Scotland. These are the early days of the clans, around the 10th century, and the Highlanders in Scotland had the clan system until 1746 when they lost their final rebellion against the English (it was over replacing the King), you can look it up if you want, it was the Battle of Culloden that ended their way of life after the English forbade many of the things that made them who they were, really sad :(
