    Little note. The creator confirmed once that Hector wrote “Un poco loco” for Imelda. She and Hector were the original duet, which is why he tells Miguel “that’s a song!” when he picks that one over remember me for the contest. Because at least the memory of THAT song wasn’t completely defiled by Ernesto

    • @samuelvincent557

      Good catch. I missed that one. I liked the clue they gave, early on, that the guitar was actually Hector's. Hector had a gold tooth, in the mirrored position as the guitar. Ernesto didn't.

  • @Psychoinnocent
    @Psychoinnocent 3 года назад +117

    So in regards to Imelda’s decision to ban music: its because, as far as she knew, Hector has chosen to leave her and Coco behind to pursue music and Never returned - and he stopped writing to Coco, he never sent letters in general, and he also didn’t become famous like Ernesto. What did he accomplish? As far as Imelda knew- /nothing/.
    So she said to hell with music.
    In regards to Abuelita and her treatment of Dante (the shoe, her comment about dogs getting attached when named) - My family’s from El Salvador, not Mexico, so I might be wrong, but in El Salvador street dogs are E v e r y w h e r e, and a lot can be friendly, and a lot can equally be aggressive, and overall, many can have diseases. If you pick one up, you better have a good vet to hit up.
    Re: why the tias and tios were scared to give Miguel their blessing: they were scared of Imelda. A lot of hispanic cultures are Matriarchal, even if the men call the shots. My dad and uncles are on that Machismo scale but if my grandma says a word against them they shut their mouths and listen to her. So Imelda, being “alive” in their world means she calls all the shots - also the twins are her younger brothers so yknow, they listen LMAO
    The “he died on a /Chorizo/“ joke - its a d*ck joke. Chorizo is a type of sausage lmao dark but hey theyre dead anyway
    Not sure if you noticed, but throughout the whole movie once they got to the Land of the Dead, Dante kept pulling Miguel to Hector- that his goal was in front of him the whole time.
    If you liked the music Nick, 10/10 would recommend listening to the Spanish versions !! I personally love them more than the English versions- and I believe both Miguel and Hector’s english VAs also voiced them in Spanish!

    Music has been proven to unlock certain parts of people's memories that are laying dormant due to Alzheimer's or dementia and science cannot explain it, truly a miracle. Playing her that was so so important and probably gave her a little more time with them💔❤

      @weavilefrost7034 3 года назад +19

      To add to that, while its not completely conclusive, music is one of the few things that can help with dementia since music has a very intense emotional connection and response in the brain. For dementia patients, the emotions are the last thing to go, often in stage 5 of 6 when they become catatonic, so by using music, they will often be "brought" back to the time they heard those songs in the first place.

    • @sylph2644
      @sylph2644 3 года назад +17

      Science actually can explain it, and it's really cool! The hippocampus is important in turning short-term memories into long-term memories, but it's one of the first parts of the brain to degrade with dementia. But it's not the only part of the brain that deals with memory! The amygdala deals with emotion and emotion-based learning, and it usually takes longer to be affected by dementia. Music we loved when we were younger activates both the amygdala (because it's emotional) and long-term memory, so it can be used to bypass the parts of the brain damaged by dementia.

    The city of the dead in Coco was actually modeled after Salamanca, Guanajuato Mexico, which is where my best friend of 22 years lives. She told me there are certain alleyways and street corners in the film that are exact replicas of places in Salamanca, it's so accurate.
    Salamanca is also where Pixar held the Mexican premiere of the film, and it was nearly impossible to get tickets for WEEKS after that. She told me that it stayed in theaters for nearly a YEAR because the people of Mexico loved it so much.
    She's a college professor, historian, author, and legitimate archeologist who works with the Mexican government toward the preservation of the city's historical sites, and she saw Coco in theaters six or seven times in both Spanish and English. Like once you know Héctor was once a father, you start seeing it in the little ways he interacts with Miguel (telling him he can't run off, the way he talks to him, comforting him, etc.) You also realize that their argument after the talent show is projected self-hatred on Héctor's part. The thing is I closely relate to the movie because my grandma has the same memory diagnosis. She would ask where her husband was (he passed in 1998) and she'd ask where her mom was. (Great Grandma passed in 1996). She would constantly ask where mom was or who someone is; addressed me as my mom's name and my brothers as my uncles. She'd also start to sing lots of songs in Spanish out of the blue since she grew up in Mexico but that also caused her to ask when she was going home despite being in the house she bought back in the 1950's.
    Though whenever her birthday came after she turned 86 she would ask who's birthday it is and be so surprised when we told her it's her birthday and what age she is. She went through a lot, a strong woman literally and figuratively. Music is powerful, it brought her happiness. A favorite of hers is That's Amore.
    I had shown her this movie when it came out and she absolutely loved it and laughed when Poco Loco came up
    She recently passed away, but she had the reassurance that she was home. Now she can be with her husband and they can finally be together once more.

    I admit, when I watched this movie years ago I didn't cry. Teared up, but not actual crying. First, because I watched too many reviews before watching that I watched it more critically like I was judging if it really was as great as they said it was, instead of me just relaxing and enjoying myself, and second, because I predicted that Ernesto wasn't actually family and Hector is actually the real one. But watching you cry and get affected in emotional scenes brought me in emotionally in those scenes too, made me care about the characters, realize how sad things were, and I was touched when Miguel started singing to Coco.
    I admit, I was a bit sad that I didn't get as affected/emotional as other people said they were when they watched the movie, but now, years later, I *am* affected. So... thank you.

    The incredible thing about the music bringing Coco back to herself at the end is that that REALLY HAPPENS. There's footage all over RUclips of dementia patients who are closed-in, barely responding to the world around them, let alone verbally - but they slip some headphones on these folks and play them music from their youth and they just blossom. They start talking, holding conversations, remember family members they couldn't recall names for...it's truly wonderful to watch. Check it out!

    Hey Nick,
    I really love your channel, have been watching for a few months already.
    As a born and raised Mexican, i feel like i have to explain a few things, Día de Los Muertos(day of the death) is celebrated on nov 2 every year, we put on an Altar were we put the pictures of our loved ones who are no longer with us, an Ofrenda(offering) is the food and drinks they loved when they were alive you can also put things they liked like toys, books or albums(cds, vinyls, etc), Alebrijes which is pronounced "Ah-lé-bree-hess" are "spirit guides" that were created by a mexican artist who dreamed of them being a combination of different animals and with bright colors.
    The whole basis of the movie is that it happens in Día de Los Muertos, thats why they have to do everything on the same day.

    I think this movie hits different in accordance to culture. Non Latino cultures might find it odd and hard to connect which is understandable but for Latinos this hits home. We are generally very family oriented and the day of the dead is for the most part observed in our countries. We are superstitious because it is believed we must pray for the dead that day, visit them and in a way they are with us that day. This is how we are raised and seeing this movie at least for me brings back deep rooted memories and traditions. I got super emotional watching it but it’s beautiful to see people from other cultures connect with this movie and understand the meaning behind it 💜

    Crying actually literally flushes away excess chemicals and helps regulate your emotions, different emotional tears look different under the microscope. So keep on being your authentic self!!
    But also if you find any movie or media is TOO intense for you, please feel free to pause and take a break and then get back to it. Or not at all if you feel it's harmful to your mental wellbeing! Even if everyone says its good.
    Like everyone tells me the handmaids tale is absolutely fantastic but its also all about sexual slavery and sexual abuse and how uncomfortably close our society is to that and i know for a fact that stuff would absolutely wreck my mental health so i am never going to be able to watch it. Doesnt make it a bad show, just a bad fit for me.

    You know what we need more of? Wolfwalkers reactions.
    One of the funniest transitions in the film:
    Ernesto: * gets crushed by falling Mexican liberty bell *
    Miguel: I wanna be just like him!
    The singular issue I take with this otherwise perfect film is the fact that Imelda is never called out on what she did wrong. She literally told Miguel that if he ever played music again, he would die. She knew the consequences of being forgotten, and she still went out of her way to make sure Héctor was forgotten. She spent her entire life and afterlife preaching about how family is the most important thing in the world, then she went and put her rules and traditions above her family--and taught Elena to do the same. Imelda is far from innocent in all this. And she needed to be taken to task for it. Héctor would never do it, but someone should have.
    The other musicians are joking that Héctor supposedly died giving someone a blow job. Also, the dancers emerging from the papaya represent childbirth. Like, a child actually physically coming out of the birth canal. Which, in a really, really weird way that you really should not think about too much, makes Frida Kahlo every main cast member's "mother." But then, her married name was Rivera.
    Héctor's VA brought his actual 3-year-old daughter into the recording booth and had her sing with him. So the voice of Baby Coco is Baby Garcia.
    True love is each party sacrificing their own dreams to make the other's dreams come true. Miguel and Héctor did that. They each sacrificed what they wanted for the other, and in the end, they each had their dreams fulfilled in ways they never could've imagined or achieved on their own.
    In the novelization, the tías actually spent some time in the rehearsal studio messing around with the cameras and controls. That's how they knew to turn the camera feed on Ernesto at just the right time.
    The arrangement of the living Riveras during Miguel's lullaby for Mamá Coco is interesting. They're arranged in sibling pairs, except for Elena (whose sister Victoria is dead), Franco and Enrique. You've got Luisa and Gloria next to each other, then behind them are Abel and Rosa, and behind Franco are Berto and Carmen. I think the storyboard artists arranged them like that to emphasize family lines for that specific scene.
    Miguel's little sister is named after Mamá Coco.
