I personally think this is one of the better games for the Gameboy

Donkey Kong from the Arcade/NES/GB versions grew up to become Cranky Kong from Donkey Kong Country onwards! And Junior with the diaper pulling those levers here became Donkey Kong, the protagonist from Donkey Kong Country

This version is kindergarden and it doesn't feel like a mario for so many reasons.
Yes, it doesn't feel like Mario Bros and Mario as we know him nowadays, as it's extremly faithful to Mario's origin in the arcades and expands that concept. Also the first Mario vs. Donkey Kong on the GBA does. In fact, it feels more like Mario than ever.
And why exactly is it kindergarden? Have you actually played it?
