This is a gameboy game with 90 levels, multiple boss fights and cutscenes!!! I played through it all as a child and I still get amazed by how much this game achieved.
As you can probably tell, this game planted the seed that would eventually flourish into the game known as Mario VS Donkey Kong for the Game Boy Advance, released in 2004, which would eventually get a remake for the Nintendo Switch in 2024.
It actually somewhat was a tech-demo for the super Gameboy. It was launghed alongside it and used every aspect to it's fullest. No other game afterwards really took advantage of the super gameboy to the same extent.
Hell yeah brotha, that's exactly how I remember it. Game first warms you up and then says "now for the real game sucka!!!" Straight homerun with this title. Now we need a Popeye done just like this.
The Construction Site and Big City - New Donk Forest - Steam Gardens Ship - Bubblaine Jungle - Forgotten Isle Desert - Tostarena Airplane - Nimbus Arena Iceberg - Shiveria Rocky Valley and Tower - Crumbleden Dunno why, but the locations of this game had to remind me of Super Mario Odyssey...
This game first treats you like a mother, going through, nurturing you, and showing you some amount of difficulty in the very beginning. Then it goes berserk, and forces you to murder it with your bare hands and grab victory from lifeless body.
If this game was canon to the Super Mario franchise, then a lot of things about Mario's origins would make much more sense. First of all, Mario is depicted as some kind of circus acrobat in this game, which would account for his incredible jumping abilities and for why Donkey Kong was so upset about being in the city. Ol' DK was perhaps some kind of circus attraction and Mario was hired to tend to his cage. While that job payed the bills, Mario's true passion was being a star in the circus and he secretly practiced acrobatics, but the sleazy owners wouldn't cast him as such. And Pauline, Mario's former girlfriend at the time, was an ecologically sensitive soul who DK sensed and he tricked himself into falling in love with her, broke free from the circus to attempt to charm her by slicking his "hair", wearing a necktie, and bringing her flowers. But in reality Pauline wouldn't have anything to do with what the big ape felt so the famous repetitive antic ensued as we see in the game.
Actually, Mario owned Donkey Kong (canonically now known as Cranky Kong, the grandfather of the current Donkey Kong) as a sideshow attraction, Mario was indeed affiliated with a circus. There's an old Game and Watch where you control DK in a juggling game, and Mario is the one who is making sure he's doing a great job at it. Screwing up made Mario laugh and torment him. DK was furious on how he was being treated by his owner, and as a means of revenge DK breaks loose and kidnaps Mario's girlfriend at the time, Pauline. Jumpman and Mario are the same person, Pauline does ask Mario questions regarding the events of Donkey Kong. So yeah, Mario may have learned these skills in this other job of his.
I remember playing this on my gameboy color given to me by my grandmother in the early 2000s, I was 6 at the time I believe. I was always stuck on these basic levels until one day I stacked all the kongs!! I had no idea there was a whole world map setup after !!! I only thought it was the barrel jumping and that's it, but nope. Still proud of myself for completing this jewel!!!
You know, with Super Nintendo World being a real thing, making a JAWS reference just like that would help explain why Universal decided to, pardon the expression, 1-UP Disneyland/Walt Disney World/Disney's California Adventure by creating such a land.

Well, the truth is... if you play Donkey Kong JR., you will see that it's not really Mario, after all, the game's intro shows TWO Marios.
And the Arcade DK was actually CRANKY KONG. The DK from the later DK games are Cranky's grandson.
Is jumpman and Mario the same person?
well, odyssey showed that the original donkey kong is canon ar least, so possibly...
Actually, Mario owned Donkey Kong (canonically now known as Cranky Kong, the grandfather of the current Donkey Kong) as a sideshow attraction, Mario was indeed affiliated with a circus.
