It actually had initially strong market appeal, but then people just became disinterested in general. Atari could recover from it due to their success, but it ultimately killed off ColecoVision in the process.

Modern DK (Red tie) is actually DK Jr's son, meaning that modern DK's name is Donkey Kong the 3rd. Junior showed up in the SNES Mario Kart, and N64 Mario Tennis, then he kind just disappeared.
I remember having the "Donkey Kong II" game and watch as a clock, and spent lots of allowance/yard money getting batteries for it. Good times. The Arcade, Nintendo-made, and Atari-computer/8-bit versions all were good.

I played all three DONKEY KONG games on the NES, and also the first DONKEY KONG (Ocean) on the Commodore 64, and they were all great 😺👍🕹️. But i think, the Arcade, ColecoVision and Coleco ADAM versions of this game look absolutely amazing 😺👍🕹️.

I suppose one could argue that Wario World's bad ending is the canon one, where Wario doesn't rebuild his castle. But honestly, that's kind of a letdown considering how many castles Mario has blown up. It's possible that he still owns the castle, but uses the smaller house as a second home for the WarioWare games .
