I remember the first time I beat him as as a kid. Mario was down. Peach was down. I was out of pick me ups. Geno was poisoned with only 13 HP left. Thought I was gonna wipe for the 100th time. Did a normal attack and won. I was delirious.
What made this game so special was not just the gameplay. It was the introduction of other villains/characters outside the Mario universe. Like these villains could have had their own popular franchise and somehow bumped into Mario's world.
This masterpiece of a game was an amazing experience wish they included Luigi. The soundtrack by far my favorite no cod or modern game can even come close to existence to the memories this has left in the lucky few of us who have this experience in our hearts

Is like watching emperor palpating getting annihilated!!! He's like a terminator and Star Wars character combined and his default form is s demonic Santa!!!

With the 3-man team and geno and mario having zero healing the choice was obvi for me. Don't get me wrong. Lil secret browser mario and mallow work out weirdly too kinda lol
They were his clones. Gestating like metallic fetuses linked to that puslusing generator in the background. When smithy overheated and exploded it short circuited the life supporting machine for his clones. Which killed them and is why the room turned gray as the life drained out of it. He was planning a complete genocide if the universe but killing him in just the right manner and place thankfully put A stop to his maniacal plans.

That last part with the fireworks and geno ascending to heaven makes me want to cry... Or the part where jhonny is looking out over the sea is also very poignant...
Give mario the lazy shell weapon, give peach lazy shell armor. Best trick in the game lol. This is still my favorite turn based rpg of all time. Truly a timeless masterpiece. So glad they are remaking it.
This final fight (including his second form) took me a grand total of 3 hours to complete because of the constant healing/resurrecting I had to do thanks to his Tank form’s Magnum attack. When I finally beat him, I was exhausted and my hands were sweaty af. Good times. They sure don’t make games like these ones anymore!
I like how every villain takes over Bowser in some way, in most if not all Mario RPG games, because Bowser is really powerful and he ends up partnering with Mario in some of the rpg Mario games; as well as Bowser ends up looking like a fool.😂
In this battle, I was down to one remaining healing item (a Kerokero Cola) and _every single time_ I used it, I got a freebie. Happened 3 to 4 times at *_least._* I still wonder if the game fudged the numbers, since I was low-level and on my last healing item, it was the last battle, and the game's aimed at younger kids (which I certainly was). Or... just coincidence.
I actually beat it quite easily, the trick is a following. When you level up, ONLY use the STAR bonus( extra MGATK+DEF, bc in the late game there is a lot of spell users, and your armor and accesories are more than enough against physical attacks). And of course the best trio, Mario/Mallow/Geno. Smithy in tank form is weak to Thunder spells(this is why Mallow is a must), the Magician just needs to be pummeled hard, Mario+Geno is more than up to the task, the chest form is weak against Mario's Jump attacks, and there is a defensive 4th form, just hit it with normal attacks , dont bother to use spells... And at least have a few KeroKeroCola, for a full replenish...

3 things I'd like to point out: first, Luigi is in the ending credit's and in the games instruction manual, as well as playing a key role as an in game hidden character from behind a building, he talks to Mario but can't be seen. He's in either Rose Town or Seaside town I believe. (look behind a few buildings pressing A, Rose town is the best guess) Second, the fireworks display @ the end of the parade is more lively the more fireworks you buy in Moleville, (buy enough and get a “star shower” as it's called for the finale, you have to trade a few times to do it and they cost 200 coins each time). third, the weapon Mario used against Smithy in this video is NOT his strongest weapon, it's his strongest hammer but there is something he can equip that's even stronger called the lazy shell, a very big winged red Koopa shell that once Mario reaches high levels and combined with Gino's “Gino boost” move or attack booting items dishes out massive damage to enemies. To get it beat Valentina in nimbus land, get the seed at the beginning then after kicking her butt in a fight, go near the end of the clouds off to the right of the screen, and actually walk on the sky to find a shy away minion she left behind who will give you some furtalizer, (yes I know it's spelled wrong sorry 😜) and take both to Rose town to the gardener and give them both to him to produce a beanstalk, climb it to get the lazy shell weapon for Mario, and the lazy shell armor for all characters that increases defense like crazy, but cuts speed harshly (as it's a giant shell) it also cuts magic attack as well, so if your a healer don't give it to Toadstool before a boss fight as her group hug move will be cut in half just to warn you. On the plus side as she has the lowest HP in the group, it keeps her alive longer at least, so there's that I guess.

Flawless game. Bad ass soundtrack for a Mario game. The ending felt deserved too. Some games just quickly end it but this game gave your effort and time a just ending.

This was nightmare fuel for me when I first got to Smithy Second Phase. I kept getting wiped out by Wizard Head, this was on a rented game, later on when I learned where Red Essence locations were, I managed to beat him. And then I learned about Culex, and had regrets with that boss for a while. In the end I completely beat this game.
1:48 - Aww, because you were so leveled up, it missed the “sting” - the intro to the song usually lines up with the “Sledge” attack and makes the battle even scarier from square one!
I just beat Super Mario RPG for the first time and man I called a 2nd form on Smithy. While I beat him on my 2nd try, I barely made it before dying. It took so long to kill but I did it. Great final boss.
I played this game many years ago and played it again a recently. Today i completed the game just in the end when i defeated the last boss, my emulator crashed. Thank you for share the end. I forgot how it was.
so that's the ending. I was totally expecting Geno to suddenly turn into a real person or at least come back in a post credits scene, falling back down as a star and almost a year later a couple have a baby and the last line would be, "We will name him...Geno." How's that for feels?
I think the lore goes like this: Smithy was the last of his kind of the smithy world. So he started production of other weapons and started conquering worlds after creating the giant sword exor, which can transport to other worlds. Unfortunately the smithy gang found the mushroom kingdom. So Smithy has no true creator.....I think....
He’s definitely not a robot that was created. It seems he is like a liquid biological metallic amoeba... like an organic t-1000. Possibly like a silicon based life form from another dimension... his body was just grafted onto him to keep the star away from Mario. In his original form he’s just a sentient mass of liquid mercury like material that functions like an amoeba. His first form was just a random disguise or default form that looks like an evil Santa. I doubt his bears was even real. It’s probably just synthetic...

If you havent play it yet then Super Mario Rpg Armegeddon is just the hard mode you needed although be warned you will get fucked alot.
In 2023 Super Mario RPG has finally deserved a Remake and will be release on Switch!

Prince Mallow 👑 he was my favorite one in the whole game. Never switched him out. I really hope this game gets remade.

I'd argue that alien invader Mario fights in that one game Daisy devus in is the most forgettable.
I just beat Super Mario RPG for the first time and man I called a 2nd form on Smithy. While I beat him on my 2nd try, I barely made it before dying. It took so long to kill but I did it. Great final boss.

I played this game many years ago and played it again a recently. Today i completed the game just in the end when i defeated the last boss, my emulator crashed. Thank you for share the end. I forgot how it was.

I came into this battle with level 23 Mario Mallow and Geno, with three pick me ups, and about 5 max mushrooms. Crap.
so that's the ending. I was totally expecting Geno to suddenly turn into a real person or at least come back in a post credits scene, falling back down as a star and almost a year later a couple have a baby and the last line would be, "We will name him...Geno." How's that for feels?
Nope. He was turned into a costume for Miis to wear in smash, never to be spoken of again.

I think the lore goes like this:
Smithy was the last of his kind of the smithy world.
So he started production of other weapons and started conquering worlds after creating the giant sword exor, which can transport to other worlds. Unfortunately the smithy gang found the mushroom kingdom.
So Smithy has no true creator.....I think....
I think he might just be another creature in the mario universe. No backstory behind him. No creator. Just there. Existing.
He’s definitely not a robot that was created. It seems he is like a liquid biological metallic amoeba... like an organic t-1000. Possibly like a silicon based life form from another dimension... his body was just grafted onto him to keep the star away from Mario. In his original form he’s just a sentient mass of liquid mercury like material that functions like an amoeba. His first form was just a random disguise or default form that looks like an evil Santa. I doubt his bears was even real. It’s probably just synthetic...

Lazy Shell armor for Peach with heals and revive while Mario and Bowser doing damage made this fight way too easy
I wonder if they'll keep the Fireworks counter in the remake, so you can get the star at the end.

It's such a shame that you can't save after beating Smithy. That bummed me out so bad when i first beat it over ten years ago... or am i wrong?... @FlameChocobo
