An extremely common mistake with the setup that can completely change the path of the golf club, and ultimately your ball flight. SUBSCRIBE: / @golfliberty
This is why Golf Liberty is the way. You walk into Club Chumpion and the fitter is likely to just fit you based on what you have in that moment instead of look for small easy fixes to your set up, etc that will aid you.
Huge fan of what Matt is doing with Golf Liberty, wish I live closer to Toronto or could afford to travel up there once or twice a year. But just to be fair at least for Club Champion Canada (maybe not the ones in the US, I don't know), Ian Frasier has said on their videos a few times over the years that he sees a fitter's job as 80% fitting and 20% coaching. So Club Champion Canada may be doing similar things (at least if Ian is the one doing the fitting, don't know about his other fitters obviously).
Makes such good sense, as a lefty myself I find that my irons tend to draw/hook whereas my driver (where I tend to adopt a more weight to the rear setup) has a natural fade. Please keep up the good work!
Good stuff Matt. I prefer to hit a slight fade just seem to have more control and I intentionally setup this way but I am very steep and do feel the restriction in turn.
Most golf lessons i have taken the instructor always stand behind you to observe your swing. Very rarely do they look from a side on. Great information !
I just came across this channel and instantly sub'd as I've been missing Matty from the now old and defunct TXG channel. It's just not the same without him! One thing that I've noticed about Matt's setup with this 7i and the ball in relation to his stance is quite profounding, I've always been taught that the ball for your mid-short irons relatively stays in the middle of your stance and maybe a ball up at most for 7 or 6i. Matt looks like he places his ball in-between his front foot and middle of his stance where I normally put my longer irons. Does anyone else setup like this??? where does he put his long irons and woods if this is the case? Glad I found this channel!
Great video ,maybe go over driver set up I.e. how far should I set up away from the ball how should the driver lie on the ground, sounds pretty simple but sometimes forgotten items
Something I struggle with a lot in my setup is alignment with my feet. Because my front foot is flared open I have to keep in mind that my front foot should be further back than my straight trail foot. Otherwise my left foot is further forward and I aim right in the setup.
Makes a lot of sense. I think instructors tell students to have most of their weight on their lead foot just from set up, hence that poor exaggerated set up. Question Matt, as you start moving into your 6 iron, hybrids etc... where ball position is further forward, do we put more weight and lean more forward in set up then? Or should we just learn how to slide/bump and rotate better on the downswing to adjust with the ball being more forward? Thanks a bunch!
Such a good question. I'm kind of in this boat, I've always had more weight on the front foot because I always struggled to hit down on the ball and I cannot hit a hybrid consistently and I've never even thought about how my weight distribution is affecting my longer clubs.
Wouldn't want to lean or shift weight forward for the longer clubs, ball position is to work with the longer club/further forward low point - we need to rotate and move through the strike as you've mentioned
I get that, but it does work for many people. Please understand that I'm not criticizing your approach or advocating Stack and Tilt as the gold standard. I was merely noting a difference in approach.
I really like Matt and wish the whole breakup hadn’t happened. But, I get where Matt is coming from. What confuses me is why Matt now thinks he’s qualified to do this. He’s a marketing guy that’s learned a bit making these videos.
From what I’m aware Matt was an assistant pro at a club at some point. Not sure if he actually is a pga pro….as far as credentials go. However is level of exposure to different teaching methodologies and most importantly his own ability/ handicap give him the chops to teach most of us.
@johnwebb2466 what are your qualifications to offer up such an unconstructive comment? I'm guessing you are not a scratch golfer or on the PGA and not an instructor. Otherwise you would not remain anonymous and you would brandish your credentials. Another keyboard warrior being a tool.
Ehh, “qualified” doesn’t always mean anything. Being a certified golf professional doesn’t mean you know what you’re talking about or how to make a player better. How well a person understands, retains knowledge, and learns stuff is at a different rate per individual. I’m sure Matt has a lot more knowledge than you think. Imagine the stuff he’s prob learned from being around vokey, dill, Ian, some of the best fitters and coaches out there. I’d bet he’s gained a ton of understanding and knowledge. Not to mention you don’t know the amount or type of work he’s put in over the last couple years to possibly get to this point of being able to start doing some teaching. I’ve spent the past 4-5yrs diving in deep and it’s paid off for me and the few people I started working with. I’d die to be able to do what Matt is doing and be in the golf Industry. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Certainly explains why I was fitted to +3 upright irons...
Whoa. I just followed your instruction, and straight away there was a change in contact and ball flight. WTF. Thank you. You are a a Gun. So good.

Great video which really explains as well as shows you proper, basic set-up positions to have success with your ball striking capabilities.
this is the type of content that puts golf liberty one step above, gem of a video

Keep up the great work, Matt. This format is top shelf. 🙌🙌
Great Video, simple and to the point.

Thanks Matt, super informative!
Wonderful insight.
Very thoughtful observation. thx
These videos are extremely well-made.

thank you! idk if i do this but now i know to film myself from the front to make sure
Oof. I never thought of this. My shoulders setup way open and then I wonder why I’m always going right if the target……as a lefty. Awesome video
Great video Matt!🎉
Omg thank you so much for this video!!
Big Howdy Matt from Hong Kong, Thanks👍
Quality advice right here.
Good stuff Matt 👍

Good video Matty
Dude this is me. Excellent video. Very eye opening.

Yes. Yes
Soooooo gooood!!!
Great video. What range program are you using? I have the Bushnell LP and would like to do similar analysis on path, club, etc.
FSX Pro
Love the video guilty as charged
Made an unfortunate cameo in this one lmao
Loving the content nonetheless
such a nice setup at the end of the session though!
Do you feel like your weight shifts back to 70-front/30-back when you impact the ball?
weight should be transferring through impact yes
This is something I fight regularly. I'm constantly having to check my setup and alignment to make sure my shoulders and chest aren't open to target.
This has to come from “self medicating” their swing/set up issues. They are told “move your weight forward!” so they do it at address
I understand what you are pointing out, but the Stack and Tilt method intentionally places 55-60% of weight on the front foot.
I wouldn't teach anyone that method
I get that, but it does work for many people. Please understand that I'm not criticizing your approach or advocating Stack and Tilt as the gold standard. I was merely noting a difference in approach.
This is mw

I’ve been in the golf industry for 15 years, I started as a golf pro before I ever did any production and marketing.

You can watch this for free and if it helps your game that's a bonus, if it doesn't you have lost nothing. Good job Matt keep them coming.
