Yeah, I’d need to see that 71 year old. At 68, after adopting the Mike Austin method for three years (so different from my PGA approved swing of over 40 years and as a 7 hc hardly had any rounds in the 70’s and a few in the high nineties) I finally ingrained Mike’s compound pivot and carried 285 for a total 305. At 68, pneumonia and a NDE, drives dropped to 240 carry, twenty short of my drives up to around age 56. Today at 71, I average (not including the real stinkers) about 220 carry. I am 72 yo as well, from Drumheller, Alberta. I struggle to get a drive over 200 yds. I get lots of height but I think club head speed is the key to get more carry in the air. I will try some of these tips today (if it quits raining).

I golf with a lot of older guys, and I always listen to what they have to say. They might not hit the ball far, but their course management is amazing.
I would love it if you did a comparison of the vertical line swing vs. stack & tilt vs. single plane and explain why VLS is the way to go. Also please bring AJ on a future video to show us his 300+ yard swing.
Very good, emphasizing the rotation in both hips and shoulders, so much better than rotating the shoulders against the hips. Thank you for good tips, from Norway via Pennsylvania. 75 yo.
When I was in the military I was playing golf with a man that golfed with one arm. He could not hit the ball far, about 150 yards, but it went straight. His short game was outstanding, especially his putting. This guy shot just above par golf but had a really solid game. He never got into trouble and sunk every putt within eight feet. I had the greatest respect for him and what he was able to achieve. The guy inspired me to work harder at my game and become a more accurate player.
72 from NJ. Have integrated a number of your tips into my game. At 5’7” 150 I consistently hit pretty straight drives with between 215 and 225 carry and w a good roll a total distance of 240. Not monster drives but pretty good for my age and size. BTW I play hockey and feel this aids my golf swing. But I credit most of it to your videos and some lessons from a local pro.
I'm 67, HI 8. I do the opposite. Load the trail leg heavily in the setup with a slight lean backwards and keep it relatively rigid. You do the backswing and there's nowhere to go but forward just prior to the downswing.
73.6 years. For true, I hit a 310 yd drive three weeks ago with my new TM Q10 driver. Longest drive ever for me. What was different? The almost 40 MPH tailwind that wouldn’t let the well hit ball down. LOL. I wasn’t thinking of hitting a drive that far. Never have. But even for us old guys things can come together yet and make us smile at what we can do. Thanks for the lesson.
I picked up the game at 57. I'm 64 now, pre covid I was hitting drives 300. all depend on weather ,temperature and how the greens run. Anyway after covid I could not hit a drive ZERO ! So I tee off with a 3 hybrid you strike it right and it will carry well over 200 ! I had to re-learn a new swing like yours. I practiced this swing 5 days in a row. no ball !! just tees. The first time I used it I set up Exactly as instructed came through the ball not fast maybe 100-105. I carried that ball 280 !!!! And the Technique was so different that I fell back after I completed the swing !! But I can tell you ,YES you will be out driving your group but don't get cocky and "GOE FOR IT" You will go right over the top. Even a bad drive goes 250!! I even duffed off of #one and it was straight. I took a 7 iron and blasted that out 200 yards still on a par 5 in 3 ! .Its a Donald Ross course and several greens are beyond challenging .Yesterday the greens were Lighting fast and the pin placements were all in the worst locations .If you were above a hole and just tap it it would run but so many would sit then move slow and as it just gets to the cup it runs around the edge or just past and then away it goes down the green , back to the fairways!! But We love the game !!!
Great post, thanks! After reading this, you would benefit and enjoy our book where we cover the entire Vertical Line Swing system. See here www.badliegolfbook.com/
I'm 74 and am just returning to the game after over 15 years due to work and later some physical difficulties. I used to hit long drives, but I'm having a hard time getting rotation and building swing speed. I'm sure that just getting out there and doing it will help me to improve, but I need to do these things in the proper direction. I am finding that your advice should really help me.

Great to find your channel, I'm 64 and from the UK , have lost about 40 yds in the last 18 months. Not sure if a back injury is a factor in this but trying to hit the ball out of the park and poor strikes is definitely not working. Appreciate your help in this area, love the game more than I ever have done but the lost distance is getting me down
I'm 81 1/2 and have played with younger players who can hit it a ton (270 - over 300). I've lost distance over time, have a torn rotator cuff (wear a brace to play) and can get to 200 on a good day. These drills look great so will try them out. Thanks
I took the driver out on the course for the first time today. It was not a great round except for one thing. All day I felt I was driving the ball a little further, but on one hole I hit the best drive I have ever hit on that hole. I have been playing this course for 9 years and the drive today was at least 20 yards further than the best one I have ever had before.

64 and just getting started back after 5 year away, I’m going to try these drills as I can hit it straight but about 2/3 of the distance I had 10 years ago.
I am almost 70, I have recently creased my drive about 30yds, it’s loss of weight and weight training, increased rotation and loading the swing. Length of drive (temperature dependent) from 220 to 250 consistently. A few longer.
I am 85 years old and use the vertical line swing with as much rotation as possible. My balance issues will not allow me to raise off my feet forward and back. It may take me an extra shot or so to get on the Green but my putting skills help makeup for my shorter drive.
Hello Todd, I'm a very experienced golfer (will be 81 in May) and have been very interested in your teaching since reading "The Bad Lie". My index is 5.1 and I have scored better than my age 303 times, starting at 64. I'm putting off replacement of both knees and have particular difficulty loading and unloading a proper weight shift. I play with 2 bulky knee braces similar to a football lineman. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the excellent content.

I will second what Todd. is saying, especially concerning golfer 60 and older. I play with a lot of older players who have a ball flight that is half the trajectory of a normal thirty year old’s. I don’t necessarily think it has to do with age but with fear. They have learned over time that a low flighted ball seems to stay on line longer. Without thinking about it, they think they have to hit out and not up to get their maximum distance. This is true that a low ball trajectory provides for more control but the result is that these golfers are hitting drivers less than 220 so they move up to the senior tee box when they really don’t need to as far as strength goes. Frankly, I have pointed out to them that they don’t need to be stronger or more flexible but as Todd explains, just put a little more effort into the vertical component of their swing. For sure though if there’s a knee or hip issue involved they are going to have difficulty rising up through the ball.
@@jerryinsc I’m definitely not implying that anyone in their 70’s would be able to drive it 300 yard’s except Dr. Gary Wiren. Like you, I have a lot of experience with senior golfers. And, yes, you should play the tees that give you fun. However, I can say with confidence that most senior golfers, due to their experiences, start hitting the ball lower and lower. Some of it is related to their physical fitness. But I think it’s mostly due to their perception that a lower ball flight is safer. I can’t disagree with that. However, the trade off in a negative way is distance. So, even without seeing your swing, I would suggest that if you want to hit the ball longer than you do now, look up at the clouds or above the trees in the distance. Make that your target instead of focusing on keeping the ball between the trees. Do look a a very specific point in one cloud or above the top of one tree. Just give it a try. You don’t need to swing harder and you certainly don’t want to fall back as you try to hit it higher. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that you will get 10 to 20% more distance from your driver. A guy once asked me how I get my irons to go higher (if I should so choose) considering your told to hit down. My answer was just think higher. Think penthouse instead of 7th floor. You can still hit down but get a higher ball flight. It has a lot to do with the angle of incidence. Much more than trying to lift the ball. In fact if you don’t hit down you will usually get a lower ball flight with an iron. So my over arching thought is from Ben Hogan paraphrased, trajectory is everything in golf. Nothing wrong with playing the senior tees but if you’re able to hit it further than your buddies, they will be buying lunch assuming your short games are equal.
I am 73. 6'2", 155 pounds. I have lost 20 - 30 yards off the tee in the last year, so I am definitely interested in methods to get some speed and power back.

I am 72 yo as well, from Drumheller, Alberta. I struggle to get a drive over 200 yds. I get lots of height but I think club head speed is the key to get more carry in the air. I will try some of these tips today (if it quits raining).

Very good, emphasizing the rotation in both hips and shoulders, so much better than rotating the shoulders against the hips. Thank you for good tips, from Norway via Pennsylvania. 75 yo.

You are only a child!
Great story! Thanks for sharing and your service to our country!
Congrats! You are making some great progress. Have you read our book The Bad Lie which you can find here www.badliegolfbook.com/
I will be 79 in September and play to a 12. These drills should help me lessen low back pain. Thanks
😂
I am from Saginaw Mi I am 65 from last year to this year I have lost distance on all clubs. I like the last move you showed I will work on it. Thanks
I'm 65 and scoring lower than I did 20yrs ago. I definitely have the old man swing these days. Chipping and putting saved my game.

Great to find your channel, I'm 64 and from the UK , have lost about 40 yds in the last 18 months. Not sure if a back injury is a factor in this but trying to hit the ball out of the park and poor strikes is definitely not working. I'm 81 1/2 and have played with younger players who can hit it a ton (270 - over 300). I've lost distance over time, have a torn rotator cuff (wear a brace to play) and can get to 200 on a good day. These drills look great so will try them out. Thanks

All day I felt I was driving the ball a little further, but on one hole I hit the best drive I have ever hit on that hole. I am almost 70, I have recently creased my drive about 30yds, it’s loss of weight and weight training, increased rotation and loading the swing. Length of drive (temperature dependent) from 220 to 250 consistently. A few longer.

Either you are 1 in a million or full of 💩
I will second what Todd. is saying, especially concerning golfer 60 and older.
