I never comment, however, I found this gentleman’s short video the other day, and now this one. Lifting the left handle totally changed my ball flight and overall distance. My index over the last five rounds has gone from 12.4 to 10. Every round broke 80 and one was a 74. I am 71 years old and just drove the ball 321 yards! Yes, that was exceptional but I’ve had a 307, several 290+ and more fairways. In addition, the only fairway wood I carry is a 4 wood. By lifting the left handle, I’ve added 20 yards to that as well. My playing partners love it and my best buddy who was getting one stroke is now getting five! I don’t know any of you, and you probably think this is bull, but I assure you it’s the gods honest truth. I’ve never been more happy with my golf game. Thank you thank you thank you.
Post of the month! Wow, congrats on the progress…let’s go! Nothing better than hearing we have helped a fellow golfer. Hope you subscribed, more content coming for you…
Just think how long you could hit it with both the left and right handles raised!
F
Bob from South West n.h. senior golfer
Can you explain the # 2 “lift the lead arm to raise handle higher” move?
Surely when both hands are in the handle then both lead AND trail arms are higher?
Or do you rotate the lead arm? Presumably this changes club face alignment
What am I missing?
This guy is one of the very few golf professionals on RUclips that I respect. And this segment 5:40 is the BEST piece of lesson and advice I've seen in a very long time on YT. Knowing these shoulder alignments and bringing it to practice is a game changer. Thanks for keeping it real, Todd.
You made our day my friend! Our team is committed to providing good solid advice, no long winded deep dive into rabbit holes that confuse golfers. More great content to come...
Hi Todd. This is the best tip via video about driving-hands down. The only question I have about it is that I find myself pushing the ball, i.e. a straight and powerful shot to the right that doesn't draw back. Especially when I hit hard. A pro said that this tip made me take the club too much inside, especially the right elbow. How do I avoid this push? Keep up the good work. If you didn't live that far from me, I'm in France, you would see me at your doorstep for lessons.
I've had pretty good mechanics, occasional draw, often straight, too often fade. After all these years of playing, these swing-path hoop demonstrations made me realize a fade/slice is not a bad swing, just the natural mechanics of a forward ball placement. Anyway, I tried the high hands tip, and that alone changed my ball flight. Now I have something to work with this summer. Thanks Tod!
A 245 and a 252 yards today.
The 252 yards was against the wind, most of my drives are 190 to 210.
Can't wait for tomorrow. 👏👏👏👍
Good smooth visual Todd. Very helpful.
Excellent content. I’ve been struggling with a fade leading into a slice on bad shots forever (62 now). The last few weeks I’ve been doing pretty much what you’ve described and I’m seeing a lot more drawn drives. Yesterday playing a local course, I drew every single ball and hit every fairway except two, and they were only just off. Came in with a 77…best ever! Boom!! 💥
Awesome! You are learning and making progress, nice work! We do cover the entire Vertical Line Swing in our book THE BAD LIE which you can find on Amazon if you want to continue your learning.
Allan Patrick - New Brunswick Canada Todd: I've read "the Bad Lie" many times and reviewed the VLS videos countless times. Tempo has always been my issue and if quick at all from the top my focus on the ball is lost and I come out of the shot. After several very bad rounds I took a few days off and got to the crux of the problem. Transition and the beginning of the downswing are hard things to describe, even in your book. What I have found with the recent range time has helped immensely. I make sure I get to the top, and let traansition drop the club followed by gradual increase in club speed, never too fast to pull me off the ball. I can now keep focussed on the ball, and by the time the club gets to parallel I can drive through to finish. This has been a massive revelation, only possible with all the VLS setup and positions grooved in. Now I feel I am truly able to use what I've learned from your book and videos. Excited!
Thank you! I can't wait to use these tips and hit a draw with my driver in 2023.
You can do it!
Great video and and very simple tips to work on.Thanks from Ireland.
That’s tip to raise the hands a little higher has fixed my Drive Swing. It has held with distance and accuracy… Thanks a million! 🙏🏾
Thanks for sharing. I have been slicing the ball for decades. Hope to try ur instructions.
In fact, raising the hands is something I learned from earlier Todd tips and it works great for fairway woods, hybrids, and long iron. It's a game changer which nobody but Todd has shown us "experienced golfers". Thank you Todd!
I'm still not hitting a draw with my driver, but I am driving it straight and much farther than I have since I started playing again (10 year hiatus). I have gone from weak 200 yard slice drives to a 240-260 yard drives. I also watched your video how to draw your irons and am now hitting a slight draw on my irons. Before I implemented these 2 videos I was a bogey golfer in my league...my last 9 hole round was 2 over 37! Thanks for the videos! They have helped tremendously.
I've been doing it and it's getting better.
And it's fun. 👏👏👏👍
Your instruction is are really good, simple and easy to understand. Thanks.
Thank you, we pride ourselves in keeping the information simple and yet impactful. Have you seen this www.badliegolfbook.com/
I learned this last month and it’s nice to see it reinforced.
Grat video. I’ve been slicing my drives. Can’t wait to try this. Enjoying your book too. Thanks!
Thanks for posting. Nothing better than helping our fellow golfers enjoy this great game...more to come.
Love this ❤ I was really struggling with my driving on the range yesterday… then remembered your tip about the lead arm being higher from another video… so I tried it and it instantly fixed my driving… I was hitting a very slight fade, but it was consistent and I can work with it 👍🏻
Chris, we call that learning and progress! Good for you...the Vertical Line Swing continues to improve games...
Todd, great tips! Lucas KY here. I've used the toe tip flare for improved balance...and confidence during my swing. You also had a tip to close the stance a tad to get a draw. So after getting my alignment to my target line, I rotate a couple degrees to the right. Low ànd behold, I can now see my club head square to the ball! With the club head at rest about three inches behind the ball, I'm now swinging up as I make contact and square with the club face. + 20 to +40 yards, much better run out, and finding more fairways! Your tips and teaching make sense, are practical, and deliver results! Thank you!
Post of the day here...thank you. We are learning and seeing progress...boom!
That’s a high draw….. that’s a pull cut example at 6 minutes really helped my drives! Great for an over the top golfer like myself. Thanks from Fargo!
Great to hear!
Nice simple draw tip. Will take this to the practice range
Glad it was helpful! If you enjoyed this, you may also like our book where we cover the entire Vertical Line Swing System. See here www.badliegolfbook.com/
Wow I’m so glad I found this I slice really bad I just can’t help it I go over the top. I finished just like you did with the pull cut.
Nothing felt right or comfortable but I started finishing with the trail shoulder lower than the lead shoulder, and did everything else the same.
It doesn’t draw but now no I don’t slice 30 yards right. I’m gonna keep practicing thank you!!
Welcome to the channel, hope you are find it helpful to your game...more to come. Have you seen this video ruclips.net/video/4obK1N-N9qY/видео.htmlsi=Sla2cQdUEE43RFqO
Great info, I've been struggling with this. Looking forward to trying it out
Nice instruction. I'll give it a try in the spring.
Dan from Sacramento, CA here. Todd, you mentioned in one of your videos (which I can't seem to find) something about "follow the curve." What did you mean by this? Is this something you can do with all clubs?
Great video. I love the right shoulder path instruction. Taking that to the sim this weekend
You got this! 👊
@@USGOLFTVshow I used this drill today and the sim showed a nice draw. All my drives showed between 230-240, which for me is a big improvement from my usual 220ish. Can’t wait for the new season to take it to the course
Stumble on this video. This probably the best swing breakdown I’ve seen online.
One question, are there any modifications for hitting a draw with a hybrid or iron? I’m assuming the lead arm would go back down and not tilting to hit up on the ball.
Thanks for the kind words....here is our playlist that includes all our hybrid videos ruclips.net/video/w0glRrWuOt8/видео.htmlsi=boJIIQAFvnOaqUHB
Muchas gracias, excelente explicación.
This is something that I really want to learn
UK here. 'Aim slightly to the right'. What's slightly? Should I then aim my shoulders and hips on the same path? I'm loving your tutorials, they are full of information which you put across in an easy and relaxed manner. More please.
Good question, slight aim right means right side of the fairway vs center of the fairway. Hope that helps.
Great video and content as always Todd 👍👍
Thanks 👍
From Venice, Fl and Wyckoff, NJ. Would like to see a video about uneven lies - uphill, downhill, side hill. Thanks.
A great video. Very clear instruction and made simple enough even for me to grasp.
Glad it helped! More to come…
Todd, I have many times had the High draw finish but lately, I am still struggling with my drives, left And right. Yesterday, I hit only 3 fairways. I've raised the left Arm, opened my stance, closed my stance, checked my Grip, my tempo alternating between a wedge and driver in order to slow myself down. I NEED A FAIRWAY FINDER.
That’s three videos I’ve watched each giving different advice!!
Great stuff and a lot of this material including the vertical line swing is very similar to The Canadian golfer, single plane swing , Moe Norman who many consider the best ball striker in history. At 75 these tips have really helped and enjoy the videos very much.
Moe Norman is a legend. We will take the comparison...thank you!
This is exactly what i needed. Thank you.
We got you covered...are you a subscriber?
Enjoying your videos. I have a request for a video or a series of videos. I'm basically self-taught from books and articles years ago. But I have taken a few lessons and I'm watching videos now a days. My wife (66 years old) is trying to learn golf - 2 or 3 years. So far I have not been able to get her to take lessons. She wants me to help her (by the way, it is a bad idea to every try and teach a family member). I really don't know enough about what I'm doing and she has issues to deal with that are not the normal for the average golfer. So far I have not been able to find videos or articles addressing these. Hope you can help. 1. She is short and stout - 4'11". 2. She has erosive osteoarthritis very bad in her back and hands. 3. Her fingers / knuckles look a lot like rheumatoid arthritis. 4. Because of the arthritis she does not have a lot of strength in her hands and does not get a lot of rotation. 5. She has large breasts that get in the way. What we have done to try and help is: 1. She wears Bionic ReliefGrip Golf Gloves on both hands. 3. She uses a baseball grip as she cannot interlock or overlap without pain. 4. We have oversize grips. 5. She wears a velcro waist band while playing. If you could work in a series of lessons all the way through driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, short irons, basically everything; I think you would address an audience that probably needs help. Thanks for your consideration.
Excellent advice. Good explanation.
Thank you. Here is another good video on the driver set up if you would like to learn more ruclips.net/video/G3lKPdz0Sbw/видео.htmlsi=6NT1tDL88t81d03r
Great Stuff. thank you. Rolla, MO
Thanks Steve, more great content coming
Thanks for the great info. It works for me. Do you give private lessons? I'm a 75 yr old man who hits my driver consistently 190-210 with a small fade. I under hit most all my irons. Example: 7 iron maybe 135. I think I could benefit from some in person lessons. I live in Pinehurst, NC. Please let me know. Many thanks!
Thanks for the kind words. Drop us a note at info@vlsgolf.com for information on coaching
Went out this morning in the light snow & used this method for the 3rd time on the driving range. Further in the air , a lot straighter with the Driver , #4 & #6 Hybrids for second shots very straight , high in the air average 160 - 195 yards in the air the driver was even longer & good air I am now able to release & swing for the fences not bad for an old man ( 71)
John, you are a brave soul hitting balls in the snow LOL. Good for you...have you read my book The Bad Lie. The full Vertical Line Swing is covered. Here is the Amazon link if you are interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
Have been struggling with the big stick for a few rounds but took this right to the course and while I only hit a couple of draws the rest were just straight or slight fades all day. Many thanks for this one!

Hi Todd, first time responder here. If you could show actual slow motion of the real swing I think it would really show what you are teaching. Thanks.
Allan Patrick - New Brunswick Canada A challenge for me is tempo. It's the critical point at the top when I pause and then the acceleration through impact should begin. When it works all is fine. When I lost the feeling of the top, the arms start down too quickle, pulling me off the ball and a whole range of mishits occur. Any tip on transition? Would be a grest help to me.
Really enjoyed this video. Simple to understand and instantly recognized one of my faults. Can't wait to get to the range to work on it. One question I have is about your grip... Noticed you have a rather strong grip. Is that a must to hit a high draw or is a neutral grip still ok?
Thank you!
In general we like a slightly stronger grip for our students, not a cornerstone but a preference
How are you raising the forward arm ? Are you rotating the grip clockwise to get th forward arm higher ?
Wow this video alone has so many great details and fixed my pull slice. What’s the teachers name?
Love the lead shoulder high I’ve been trying to achieve this by arching my back in order to get the shoulder high and stay back in the follow though.
Todd could you do a video how to fix a blocking shot. I know why it happens, the club face is open. How does a person fix it? I really enjoy your videos. Thank you
Joe, could be a variety of reasons. I will pass forward to the team. In the meantime, try this drill ruclips.net/video/dx-H4ntMcGs/видео.html
Have read your book, The Bad Lie, and have tried VLS at indoor range with very good results. In book you talk about dropping hands in transition, while keeping your hips and shoulders slightly closed. Is this a swing thought to start transition to promote inside to outside swing and draw ball? Highly recommend book. The freedom of arms in swing is going to make me a better golfer. Waiting for snow to melt to get outside.
James, thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the book. Yes, the freedom of the arms to move is vital to most all golfers. We like a slightly closed stance to promote the high draw. Appreciate you posting...hope you left us a review on Amazon!
Hi Todd, Mark Vreeland from Chesterfield, MO. I just watched the driver draw video and I understand what you were showing and explaining but for all the time that I have been playing I have always hit a cut or fade. I can start the drive down the left side of the fairway and have the ball fade back to the middle or middle-right. Seldom do I hit a horrible slice unless I get my hands way out in front. I will try your recommendations next time I go to the driving range to see if I can get the draw working. My question to you is regarding the fade - in my set up; I tilt my right shoulder down normally by holding my driver out in front and then slightly tilt my shoulder to the right. The fade is still there. If the fade isn’t there then the ball goes rather straight - sometimes straight left and no fade. When that happens I am leveling off my shoulder? Let me know what you think. Thanks for all the great content. Look forward to hearing from you.
Mark, if you have good ball control don't be afraid of the fade, if it aint broke, don't try to fix it. Not a big fan of level shoulders with the driver as we like to hit up on the ball when possible. A slight tilt to the shoulders promotes this motion. Hope that helps...
Can't wait for tomorrow 👏👏👏👍
You got this...
great tips, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I love this lesson....ty
Our pleasure. This is my favorite drill for increasing the hip turn which is key for the driver in our experience ruclips.net/video/2au34FzDr-w/видео.htmlsi=A9VaiNL4EcVOA5w2
Interesting about the lead arm @ address, never heard that before. To get the lean I take my RH grip from down near the knee.
Todd, couldn’t find the Science of the Slice article. Do I have to register on ur Web Site first? Question: on the back swing is the club going straight back and the down swing from the inside? Re Draw.
Drop us a note at info@vlsgolf.com and we will get you the link
I have tried this today at the driving range. The last 30 balls I hit were all draws. Sometimes I have to much draw and low flight. Sometimes the ball starts way right and then draws back. I just have to figure out what I am doing with those shots? This is the first time in 40 years of golf that I was able to draw the ball consistently. I am a give me steps to set up type player when setting up to hit the ball. This is great. 1 step at a time for set up.
Post of the day, learning and improving, good for you. This is part of our Vertical Line Swing System. If you want to learn more, check out our book, The Bad Lie or this video ruclips.net/video/4obK1N-N9qY/видео.htmlsi=9UJc7fY5C3_bK34t

Todd, how does this work with vls swing? thanks Rich
Thanks Todd...been really struggling transitioning the VLS to the driver. I think this will help tremendously. Also, do you think the more vertical aspect of the VLS is more conducive to shorter driver length? I have found since working on the VLS that I have to choke down on the club to make center contact. Thanks!
Yes to some degree. We have more in depth coaching available to dive deeper into the VLS system. Drop us a note for details info@vlsgolf.com
I am a left handed golfer
I am struggling with the down swing.
Any simple suggestions to try
Thank you
Best bet is to read this as we cover the entire Vertical Line Swing system in a simple step by step process www.badliegolfbook.com/
Todd, when you align yourself slightly to the right, where do you aim the clubface - to the right also , or where you want to finish [ slightly closed to your alignment ] ? Thanks
Face at the target line. More details are in my book, The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
newer golfer here from Atlanta - 73 yrs old -- when setting up with a slightly open stance do you square your hips and shoulders with your feet or with the target line?
Excellent question Steve, when you close your stance slightly relative to the target you will also have your body shift slightly closed. Here is the key though: your club stays square to the target line, not to your body. Here is another video on hitting a draw we did recently to help - ruclips.net/video/1S1GjJvsWOo/видео.html
Hope the info helps, thanks for watching!
I can't keep my left arm straight due to inflexibility resulting from aging and multiple surgical procedures. Is there an adjustment for this situation? TY
Hi Todd. Great video. I have played baseball most of my life and most recently squash. I dabbled in golf off and on and now that I am retired I want to play more and get better at it. Played only four or five times a year. The VLS swing intrigues me because just like a bat or even squash raquet you bring it up high around the shoulders and not low around the back. I have just got your book and have read it. My question is you say to use the overlap grip . I use the 10 finger grip. What little I play I know I am a slicer. Should I switch my grip. From great white north Canada.
Tony, we like the overlap grip for our students unless they are very young or lack strength. This would be a good place to start your process www.badliegolfbook.com/
One last question, what position should the driver face be when addressing the ball?
In alignment with the feet (slightly open) or square to the fairway?
Face should always be square to the target line, good question.
Is it the body turn that drops the driver below the red line? Bryan 67 York, PA
I use to draw the ball all the time with my driver. I just started my season and my club face is open at impact. Everything is either a push or a push slice. So frustrating. Help!
Grip
Very good Some secret sauce
When you close your stance do you aim more left to compensate to avoid hitting right Ron from Texas
Good question Ron. Your aim should stay square to your target line as you close your stance. Hope that helps!
I just purchased your driver. I love it. However, I am learning to hit it constantly. My question: Does your technique work the same as the Titelist driver you are using? Thanks for your reply. BTW I am getting 30 extra yards with your driver when I hit it flush!😊
Boom! Thank you for the purchase and question. Yes, the Vertical Line Swing works with all clubs in the bag no matter the brand. Although we like ours the best LOL. If you would like to learn more check our my book, The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
I have a draw biased driver and tend to really cause right to left spin. The ball starting right and loosing distance due to so much spin. Any tips on hitting a draw biased driver?
Yes, watch this video, it will give you some solid ideas ruclips.net/video/sUzZ4cneUqg/видео.htmlsi=Dzv__c54JRNyCkPm
My comment is not about hitting the draw but came to mind watching this video. My question revolves around where the hands are in the back swing with the vernicle line swing. With the VLS my initial thought was bring hands high on the back swing. I noticed in this video that your hand are near or below the level of your shoulders. So drawing a line from the ball to your shoulders and one to your hips, the hands are between the two lines.
Can you comment on the position of the hands at the end of the back swing and the impact this has on your swing and ball impact.
Thanks ken
Ken, we like to see the hand in line with the shoulders or slightly above. This is covered in detail in my book, The Bad Lie. Here you go www.badliegolfbook.com/
I’m 68 and have historically hit a fade or slice with an average drive of 235 yds. Most of my buddies are envious, however a draw would be a great addition to my arsenal. I’m taking your information to the range today.
One thing that I know I don’t do is completely finish my swing over my lead foot. Any suggestions for that?
Thanks so much.

Where did you get your nets for your indoor swing area?
David Deliz
David, focus on getting the knees to touch on the finish. We use archery netting.
Thanks
I went to the rRange today and put the three points into practice
Slightly closed stance. Square club face, and not “standing up” at impact and kept the trail shoulder underneath the leading shoulder.
What a difference. My miss was a slight push. Otherwise, after 3 drives, a consistently high draw.
I will keep following you!
Also, thanks with the archery netting comment

@@USGOLFTVshow yes indeed
When the ball is above your feet you hit a draw naturally.
Is there a way to tee the ball up to mimic that scenario?
These adjustments enhance my slice
Actually when I kept the high hands at address and wide take-away (but tossed the handle point follow through and de-emphasized the back shoulder being so low) I got something out of it.
No, no, I was right the first time. Awful push slice doing this
Just effing awful. Worse and worse every time with this. Hilarious industry
@@oliverknaus4630Oliver feel like you’re skipping a rock from your right hand. Use that to drive the path in to out and hook the ball. Then open the face enough to eliminate hook. It’s EASY.

You are learning...knowledge is key! Are you a subscriber John?
@@USGOLFTVshow Yes!
Question, are your hands forward of the ball at impact?
With the driver the hands should be equal with the ball. They will be ahead with the irons. Good question
Good info..question..I have this problem when before I finish my swing I just step out of the swing..meaning my left side (right handed) just walks out just about the same time I hit the ball.. it’s been happening for many years now! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated…thanks. Joe
Point your lead toe out slightly to allow for more hip rotation. 👊
Show shots with the 5* and 7* woods is it the same as driver???
I think I saw that when setting up for the driver pull the lead foot back a touck & flair it as well. Was this you telling this?
John in Seattle
We like the lead foot to have some flare to the toe and the stance to be slightly closed. I cover this in detail in our book, The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
@@USGOLFTVshow Thank you.
Not much cop to a golfer like me who has a very strong grip (Paul Dolman HSS grip) and uses the HSS (starting weight on the left side and arms and club on the same axis)😅😅😅😅
I’m Jack from Gilbert, AZ. I’ve watched this video several times, and I’ve implemented the slight raise of my lead arm during setup. However, when you move on past the setup to the takeaway, and eventually to the full swing, your setup does not include raising your lead arm. When move to the takeaway, I cannot see your lead arm because it’s blocked by your trail arm, unlike when you’re demonstrating the setup.
Hey Todd, my problem is the transition. Is there a drill I can use to help me with that. Thank you.

Can we draw the ball still with a really stiff shaft. Ventus black tr 7x. Or do we need a not so stiff shaft
Depends on swing speed and tempo. Hard to answer without seeing the swing.
Should you aim for the left inside corner for a right-handed golfer, or should you aim to at the back end of the ball? When trying to use your technique for a draw.
Steve, we suggest focusing on the area of the ball and be more in tune with your body moving in space. Getting too ball focused can cause tension and overthinking.

With the driver I take my hands back and in, and with irons I take my hands back and out. Correct?
Is this the same with your irons..
Do you close the club face at all?
Yes, keep the clubface square to the target line. You can learn more www.badliegolfbook.com/
Found that tilt of the upper body pushes the hip over the front leg and the weight on the inside of the trail foot which gives you a natural 60-40 weight distribution.
My god, you made a meal of that. My pro showed me a much simpler way to draw the ball.
I’m left handed only been playing 6months when I hit the driver it goes straight but at about 80 yards it starts going left way left sometimes by about 70yards left then I can do another shot and it don’t go as left???
Barry, have you watched this video we did? It will help, see here ruclips.net/video/sUzZ4cneUqg/видео.htmlsi=ELIxcTKesrs0cmxF
How far should you place your left foot ahead of your right foot.
Really depends on the club and body style. In general, shoulder width is standard for a driver for most golfers. Hope that helps…
Is your tee height a 2 3/4" or a 3 1/4" ?
3 1/4
