it is super frustrating to read comments not understanding the intent of the instructional content. THIS IS NOT GOING TO HELP SOMEONE WHO IS OTT, its clearly for the opposite problem, someone who is too inside out and has this pattern. I hope you don't feel demotivated by the people in the comments who are claiming "you are not qualified" or whatever, that is complete bullshit. This is some of the best instructional content on youtube and you're just getting started, keep it going, we love it!
So true! My feel to correct the exact same problem Matt is describing, is that my lead shoulder goes down, foward, and around to start transition. Which feels insanely OTT but zeros out my path.
@golfliberty This drill has made a significant difference in my swing, helping me reconnect through the downswing. Despite being a proficient ball striker years ago, a hiatus from golf led to a decline in my performance. However, after returning to the game and struggling to regain my former skill level, I began considering giving up. Fortunately, I stumbled upon your video and found hope. Dealing with issues like an early release and excessive inside swing, my shots often resulted in a pull hook. This drill has effectively addressed these issues, allowing me to focus on weight transfer and quieting my arms and hands. Your guidance and sharing of this drill have been invaluable in my journey back to form. Thank you Matt.
This is actually the best content i have seen, quite exactly the same problem i have, im literally imagining the connection and its changed my path dramatically
Matt, you are killing it on the channel!! your content and ideas are great 👍, and I think this is what's missing from the other RUclipsrs. Things the actual everyday golfer can use and learn. Ive been watching you for the past few yrs, with TXG and your own stuff, I'm a big fan, and wish you nothing but the best. I think I'll be getting ahold of you over the winter to do some online lessons, I'm in Ohio and Toronto is a bit of a drive 😂.
I have used this technique for chipping for some time without thinking of use it for pitching and full swing !! I now look forward to try it out -Thank U so much for this video - I am already convinced this must be right.
I've been having something similar as my common fault, and I've been fixing getting stuck halfway down with excessive lead hip clearing and arguably extreme side bend to impact. I had never thought of the idea my hands coming down like this could be the cause and focal point to remedy it. Saw the drill, stood up and closed my eyes to try to mimoc what my bad swings feel like and I think this drill could fix it. Hot damn. Once again, your varied content on G.L. has been absolutely top notch right out of the gates. Thank you.😊
As a right handed person who golfs left handed this is one of the things I constantly fight with is to pull hard with the dominant hand. This drill is perfect to stop that feeling and creating much more solid contact. Thank you so much.
Brilliant vlog and exactly the problem I'm having as I'm just getting over back problem's, and with my back not turning the arms and hands took over exactly like you explained, pulling away from the body. Gonna get the saw out, Cheer's.
Hi Matt, love the video. I’ve been working in this for two weeks now and has really helped my club path. I was 8 degrees in to out and now I’m 2 to 3. What helped me was to drop my lead foot back an inch to help me get through the swing without flipping
Great video. I've been working on something like this for a couple months. The feeling that works for me is to allow my upper trail arm to connect with my right side rib cage as I begin my downswing and then rotate keeping the connection as long as possible. Produces some of the same movements as your drill. Coming from a place similar to you: arms disconnecting and therefore having to manipulate the club face on the way to impact - I notice that the quieter my arms and the more I rotate before impact the less I pull the ball or have that nasty excess draw. Can't wait to try your drill and see how it feels and compares to what I am doing. This is really good info you are putting out.
Great drill Matty, I noticed in the video how you sat much better into you lead side but maintained your hands high. That sitting motion then brought the hands out a little. From that position you can then let the arms slide down the chest and fire at target even slightly right of target. Looks great structure.
What I, also, would like to know is how you keep from early extending without swinging over the top. I have tried many drills but cannot correct that issue. Any ideas, or have you covered this previously?
Such a solid video Matt thank you. I was wondering how people can get so in-to-out to begin with--my tendency is to be out to in, so seeing that much in to out is so foreign, but this vid explains a lot, and so good to be aware of.
Just wondering if you’ve seen Bryson on “Gears” his arms are moving away from his body/chest from the top of the backswing. The AMG guys show the same thing on all the pros they’ve measured.
What’s the “top” of the backswing. Your arms should still be working up wards as your lower body starts the transition. The arms will sling off the body eventually, but even Bryson talks about turning into his lead arm during his swing. This is also a drill for people that are pulling the club down. Feel vs real. You have to over exaggerate a lot to move the club an inch.
Exact same problem as myself at the moment, not quite so in to out but very shallow with the elbow trapping and the hands flipping to try get to the ball
That looks like the classic "stuck" trail elbow. You've come up with a pretty good drill to help you cure that. Another thing you can do is to keep your trail elbow in front of the plane of your chest. So, at the top of your backswing, lay a club or alignment rod across your chest; your elbows should be in front of the club/alignment rod. Also, place a glove/towel in the trail arm pit to keep your trail arm connected. (you've already done something similar by placing that prop there.) Best wishes!
Hi Matt, what about a device that you attach to your lead arm that touches your chest when you bring the club up in the backswing. Then keep the device touching your chest for as long as you can in the downswing. I think the device under the armpit keeps your trail arm too connected and does not allow you to achieve maximum width. Just a thought?
I struggle with a path that comes from too far inside and will early extend and get my right elbow stuck. As an older guy who is tall with long arms, I wonder if I need to be more of a "hands and arms" swinger rather than a body releaser. My question is, does this feel of leaving the arms up apply for all swings or would this be strictly a body release type move? Thanks
The rotational swing gains me 1.5 clubs in length and I hit it so pure. HOWEVER, it destroys my back which means no golf for the following two weeks (lumbar 5 on lead side). Any tips for what to avoid when doing this drill and other rotational feels?
Just trying to get caught up, have you actually changed to right handed shooting for real or just as an experiment/development thing? If for real, what is the reason? Thx, greatly appreciate your knowledge sharing.
I've tried this for a few days and it really works. It felt very strange at first but it really helps to straighten out my shots. I have a bad tendency of coming too far in-out and closing the face leading to a bad hook. With this drill/technique, I really straightened out my shots. Now I have to undo some of my compensations or I fade the ball. Constantly learning!
I'm surprised a "ton" of your students have this problem. Because i don't see it a lot in golfers. I see many, though, who have the opposite problem and wished they could, one day, come from the inside. Probably a "problem" of rather very good players.
So strange. I've seen instructor after instructor say that most people need to feel like their back is to the target longer and the arms need to work independently down and get off the chin.
You can still get the arms working down and get the shoulder off the chin while doing this drill. It just helps you not pull your arms down in one type of incorrect way
pratice swing is nothing like real swing.....real swing looks like tour swing.....square shoulders at impact, rear elbow flexed slightly.....not too sure the purpose. Most amateurs need their arms to go faster, not slower, compared to their body rotation. Good drill for better players.
nonsense. Pete Cowen, rorys coach, says thats what you should do is pull your arms down. this may not work for you but you don't have Pete cowens credibility to teach.
What’s nonsense is thinking that one feeling or tip is going to apply successfully to every player. Never said this applies to everyone, nor would any good instructor
I believe that's what I wrote...it doesn't work for you and thats fine. but one of the best instructors, pete cowen, teaching one of the best players in the world, Rory mcilroy, says your arms control the vertical. you are a good player but you don't have coaching credibility of Pete Cowen. not trying 'to offend you, just stating facts about what the best coaches teach. be objective and analytical, not subjective and in your feelings. rooting for you to play well.@@GolfLiberty
How condescending is this guy’s comment?! This drill doesn’t or won’t work for you, move on. But nonsense??? Bruh… And I’m positive that just pulling your arms down is not going to work for any player. You have to stay connected, and that’s what Matt is saying.
just being factual about what PGA coaches teach. how are facts condescending? who has more teaching credibility, Pete Cowen or whoever? my comments state that is what the best coaches teach. you are too emotional...bruh@@matiastrevino7066
Nice drill! My irons are excessively in to out but my driver is usually out to in a few degrees. Will this drill work for my driver? Trying to correct my driver's path to be a few degrees ITO. Thanks for your help, love the channel. 😊

One of the most helpful drills I’ve seen in a while! Great vid
As a right handed person who golfs left handed this is one of the things I constantly fight with is to pull hard with the dominant hand. This drill is perfect to stop that feeling and creating much more solid contact. Thank you so much.
this is great. love the in detail tips instead of the generic golf tips people know this is like a secret you're sharing
The best part about your video is that i'm also a fellow lefty so it's easier to relate
making a swing change, about 3 months into it, this is a big help. Did lessons online with Larry to start it.
Brilliant vlog and exactly the problem I'm having as I'm just getting over back problem's, and with my back not turning the arms and hands took over exactly like you explained, pulling away from the body. Gonna get the saw out, Cheer's.
Very similar to the hockey stick drill. You are so right it works, brilliant demo. 😊

I have been struggling with exactly this issue, with everything going sharp right, will definitely try this, thanks Matt
This is an awesome drill. Thanks Matt. Very timely as well, it's a big issue that I am currently working on
First time seeing this drill, can’t wait to try. Enjoying the content Matt, well done.
Matt, great concept. I am going to wrap a club around a tree so I can practice this today. Seriously, I love this thought. thank you
Pulling the arms down can be a disaster….I know from experience! Thanks Matty for the content!!
Def be trying this drill Matt, loving the tips you getting from your customer lessons/sessions 👍
Exactly the issue I've been wanting to fix in my swing. Will definitely be trying this drill out.
This is great Matt. Your swing is one I want to base mine on and now I have a drill to help me. Keep up the great work 🙌🏻
Great lesson!
Ive done this drill many times, it works so well for me
I just learned this drill today during my lesson and it helped so much. Great drill!

Dan carraher gave me the same drill a couple months ago. Works wonders
Awesome drill Matt!!

Fantastic, I really need this thanks Matt, just off to cut an old club down!!

G'Day Matt, again another great video, keep'em coming. Hope the new Biz is doing well for you. All Good Brother.

Would this be the same drill as using a ball or balloon to keep elbows connected? Same feel?
bit different, the ball drill won't necessarily stop you from getting the arms working too far down and behind
Matt, does this drill work for the driver too or is it purely for irons?
OMG the penetrating bullet sound from my 5 iron is unreal with this drill LOL
Just trying to get caught up, have you actually changed to right handed shooting for real or just as an experiment/development thing? If for real, what is the reason? Thx, greatly appreciate your knowledge sharing.
was just an experiment, good for making lesson videos
Awesome video
Great video Matt. Don’t you start to “drag” the club thru impact which is my problem-weak shots to right with open club face
Depends on the player, but in any case we wouldn’t want to rely on flipping to square the face
Ben hogen says it best. Stay connected the whole time.
thank you !
I got this same drill from my coach Dan Carraher
Interesting. I'll have to give this a try. My sequencing is definitely sub-optimal :)
I've tried this for a few days and it really works. It felt very strange at first but it really helps to straighten out my shots. I have a bad tendency of coming too far in-out and closing the face leading to a bad hook. With this drill/technique, I really straightened out my shots. Could that pulling down of the Arms be the Reason why my Ironshaft is kicking Forward way before Impact?
Great drill, it's fluid to create positions, not positions to create feel
what happend with you and ian ? dont see you on the channel anymore
I feel like this drill will help eliminate my early extension
I'm surprised a "ton" of your students have this problem. Because i don't see it a lot in golfers. I see many, though, who have the opposite problem and wished they could, one day, come from the inside.
Probably a "problem" of rather very good players.
Steve stricker like swing...perhaps?
I'm the exact opposite. My arm don't go down, and i have a big over the top...
So strange. I've seen instructor after instructor say that most people need to feel like their back is to the target longer and the arms need to work independently down and get off the chin.
Someone who is way over the top would be fine to feel the arms travelling down to start
