I am a very technical person. And I really appreciated this video. I’m a firm believer, that if you understand the concept, that things become easier. Just a couple of swings working on this concept has really given me the effect that I’ve been trying to manufacture.
Omg THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!. I am a very big strong guy who has been struggling with an early release since I was a Jr. golfer. What a video the idea to "row" that left shoulder with the lat. is what I have been missing for years. After 1 bucket of balls you can't whipe the smile off my face. Trying for year to lag the hands or drop the arms (pull the bell") but was never in position to actually make that work. I'm a trainer and very familiar with my body so the thought to row and engage the lat was very easy to feel. That one thought has also not only increased my lag and distance but it forced my right elbow into the proper tucked position and holly hell I shit ypu not probably gained 30 yards in 1 bucket of balls with the driver. Liked,Subbed and forever greatful to your channel.
Super Erklärung. Ich wünschte, irgend ein Trainer hätte mir das mal erzählt. Ich hätte viele Jahre am falschen herum probieren eingespart. Das macht viel Sinn und ist kein Quick Fix. Vielen Dank dafür!!
After watching hundreds of videos and taking some golf lessons, now I understand that the " Latissimus bending "(first time I heard of it) will make a huge difference in my golf swing and will avoid topping the ball. Thank you very much.
For such a technical subject, you communicated that very well. I've never heard anybody talk about the back swing in that fashion before. Enough info to get me to subscribe. I'm most particularly into the Stack and Tilt camp and all things Hogan. Saguto Golf is my guy but your interesting.
you have guys who approach RUclips golf videos by 'follow step 1 and then 2, this angle, this speed etc.' and you have Jonathan who gives us the meta, macro elements of golf. Thank you Jonathan for your insight.
He’s right to the best of my knowledge as anytime I have actively tried to use the arms in the downswing the result is terrible. I think that getting the arms arranged in the backswing into a good position to be pulled down is fine, but thats as far as it goes.
I think this is one of your best video's Jonathan with tremendous detail on this major move on getting the arm's down correctly. The influence first of the shoulder movement descending and 'rowing' followed by the crunching of the thoracic spine as opposed to the old adage of 'pull your arm's down like ringing the bell' is so important. Great stuff and I don't like to think of your information as 'tips' which implies a 'sticking plaster' fix but more as well founded instruction.
Wow... I’ve watched hundreds of RUclips videos on downswing transitions and this is one of the best explained and well spoken ones I’ve seen. Thanks! Liked and subscribed.
Great description of the trail shoulder in the transition and how the arms “drop”. Yes, conscious, deliberate, muscular contraction but not of arms, but of right latissimus beginning the right side bend.
So when my coach tells me to 'pull the chain' on my downswing (along a line he drew on the video) that's old school and this is more natural, modern way to achieve the pulling of the arm down with back muscle. Great video - makes sense to put the lats in play here.
Lol. Pro golfers top 20 talk about pulling the club. Nicklaus talks about pulling the club. I dont know if you know who Nicklaus is I think it is Good to follow his lead
This video contradicts itself constantly. You don’t pull the arms but you do use the shoulder and lats to pull the arms - which is pulling the arms. They are the two muscles that control arm movement in the shoulder joint. When you watch pros like Rory there is clear arm pull in the downswing. If you leave the arms passive and rotate your hips and body fast, the arms get stuck behind you and you can’t deliver the face without compensations. You do pull the arms, the key piece to understand is the direction. It’s not down or straight at the ball, it’s actually the opposite direction to your initial rotation - that creates lag and drops the right shoulder
Excellent stuff! It’s basically a side-arm throwing motion which is largely controlled by the lattisimus. Never though about that particular muscle but that seems like a hugely helpful concept
Excellent! Combined with the slight rotation of the right shoulder in sort of a circular rotation, I can feel the downswing much better. Again, Lee Deitrick had me way back in the 80's try to form a figure 8 in my backswing which put all your ideas in practice! Back at it with much more gusto! Great!
At 3:30: “What a lot of people don’t know is that the latissimus is actually connected to the arm, somewhere under the BICEPT,” while pointing to his tricep. You’re right, guy... I did not know that.
Nice video ! When I start the downswing I just focus on my left back muscles , keeping my shoulders closed a bit longer before impact and my hips clear naturally letting me hitting the ball with max speed through a light pressure on the grip. It works. I like the way you explain this biomechanics facts!! I subscribe …
I tried this approach all last year with really bad and inconsistent results, but as soon as I tried pulling the butt of the club towards the golf ball at the beginning of my downswing, the results were like night and day. So I think you need to at least include the idea of "ringing the bell" which means pulling on the club towards the ball, then figure out how to make that work with the rest of the transition.
Great work Jonathan! This is insight and instruction of real value and the highlight of how and when the Lat contracts is real gold. Golf means so much to me and I can not thank you enough for your investment in my passion.. thanks again, Bruce

Jonathan, many thanks, this is very timely! I have been working on how to shallow the club and getting the trail elbow to drop into the side more and was wondering if it was a drop or a pull, etc. By focusing a bit on the right Lat while making the right side "scrunch" move, the trail elbow finds that spot all by itself! Great lesson, thank you. If I apply this, do I have to worry about all the lessons and talk about "swallowing the arms?" Doesn't this lesson naturally shallow them? Thanks.

So I didn’t get the answer? How do the pro golfers do it...is it the muscle you are discussing....I have never heard of using this muscle...maybe you could expand on it..as I do learn a lot from your coaching
It is the trail shoulder muscles and Latissimus that start the arm swing, the lead arm will feel like it is pulling as it braces against your golf clubs momentum at the end of your back-swing and during the transition.
Modern instructors fail to mention a critical insight..” the tension created from a properly executed back swing/ body turn, automatically creates a forward motion of the lower body before the back swing is complete”.
In the part of the swing described in the video the lead arm will be pulled down by the trail shoulder and the trail side bend caused by the Latissimus and Oblique muscles.
@@JonathanTaylor63 thx for ur respond. Does the arms ever have to do a work of their own in ur opinion? Hands should reach max speed pretty early in the downswing, is this mainly done by the shoulder and lat?

How about all three they just happen in different sequences.
Are you sitting on the bar stool at the same time, ie is it the left heel that is doing this shoulder drop, latissimus pull?
So, passive arms and a body-powered, connected swing?

Could work in the practice swing to get the feel, but not with the ball.
Rotation causing the club to lag behind then throw the club at the ball
Jonathan, if you could only have one downswing thought, would it be breaking the knees or crunching your right lat muscle ?
Better to have no swing thoughts, drill your swing and trust it!

This will naturally shallow the shaft if you let it.
