I believe they are referring to the post game press conference where he messed up the players number but corrected himself. Regardless as a Cowboys fan we deserved to lose the game because of poor clock management and leaving our defensive game plan on the final drive. Personally I would have rather lost because these teams will likely meet again and Detroit will have some extra fire, not that they need it but they will have it.

    • @Morassabe
      @Morassabe 9 месяцев назад

@@dusty_burkhalter I appreciate that as a Lions fan. My problem is, is that it will be another Home game for Dallas. Detroit just got screwed out of the 2 seed at best, and it was possible they could've gotten the 1 seed. Now, they will be the 3 seed, and have to play in Dallas. And while I don't view this as something that Dallas did dirty (the team) I will note, that they are 8-0 at home, and 3-5 on the road. Had the call been made correctly, Dallas plays in Detroit. This one call, should've had the flag picked up, and the 2 pt conversion awarded. Its Bullshit that, that didn't happen. Refs make mistakes all the time, they pick flags up all the time. But in this game, Brad Allen's crew made at least 4 bad non-calls, and 3 bad calls. And that's just what I saw from watching the game on TV. I was told, but didn't see this, but the flag didn't get thrown till roughly 15 seconds after the 2pt conversion was called, seemed there was a gaggle of refs off to the side discussing it, then the flag comes out. I want the mic from Brad Allen, or anyone that was near enough to pick up Deckard reporting. If we get that, then the game is a lions win, and should be recorded as such, and Dallas can deal with the ref fallout for a change, instead of it ALWAYS being the Lions.

There have been too many Sundays where we talk about officials instead of teams. This one single call changed the top of the entire NFC, this did not just affect the Lions. If the Lions win they take at least the #2 after the Philly loss. Who do you think Seattle and LA would rather play? Everyone has their take and, it's much more simple. The ref heard 68 but said 70 since 70 had been reporting all game long. He told the Cowboys 70, he has no choice but to throw the flag after the play is done, that's why the flags were so late. I'm quite sure the Cowboys instantly reminded him he said 70, even though he had 68 in his head. When you spend all game telling a team that 70 is eligible it's easy to say that number again by accident. This is reinforced by the fact that the coach went over the play with the ref before the game. He just said the wrong number by accident and because of that he had to throw the flag. You can't penalize the Cowboys because you told them the wrong number. I would rather him be a man and own up to it than be a coward and pretend he did not screw it up.

If Brad Allen loses focus that is not the Lions fault. If 70 was reporting all game and then 68 reports then the ref needs to be listening. Unfortunately for the Lions, what was intended to be confusing to the Cowboy's defense was a bit too successful in that it confused the official as well. Should the official have been confused? Probably not. But must the Lions bear some responsibility for the confusion? Probably. The entire point of having linemen report is to *avoid* potential confusion. It's not about the officials knowing about the play. It's about the officials knowing about the pre-snap effort to confuse the Cowboys as to which of three different linemen were reporting as eligible. The Lions haven't said that they reviewed the pre-snap shell game with the officials. So we asked Blandino if, in his experience, officials would ever go along with an effort by a team to confuse the defense as to which lineman will be eligible.
"If a coach told officials that, the officials would tell them they couldn’t do it," Blandino said. "The referee would never go along with that and would make sure the defense knew exactly who was reporting."
In other words, the insistence that coach Dan Campbell went over the play with the officials doesn't matter. The problem arose from what happened before the play. And the Lions surely did not try to share that part of the plan with officials.

This is the last thing we need; referees cannot be expected to do post game reports and subject themselves to fan, press, and public scrutiny. The fans can understand what happened by listening to the countless rehashes done by the sportscasters and analysts. It is clear the Lions were trying to use gamesmanship; it is clear the referee got confused. The rule will have to be streamlined so only players "reporting" can go to the referee before the play, and the referee will have to write the player's number down in his little book, and then this number will have to be given to the opposing side. It is either this or just make the defense responsible for being more savvy and covering all players who may or may not be eligible to receive a pass.

New video released by the NFL on reporting after the game shows how Skipper was registered as reporting and Decker wasn't. All game, Skipper had been the only one reporting, and every time, he ran off the sidelines toward the official with his left arm raised and right arm tapping his chest(as that is a universal symbol for reporting), and every time the ref recognized it as him reporting, because he was. On the 2pt play, he did the EXACT SAME THING(as another video angle shows), and the ref DID turn and see him running in before Decker ever got close to the ref. Skipper was recognized as eligible before Decker ever got to him because that was how Skipper had been reporting ALL game.

You want the best officials in place for the playoffs and Brad Allen and his crew rightfully are not on the playoff officiating team. The main thing for Roger Goodell and the nfl is that this is embarrassing for the nfl, because after a great game by two great teams and two great qbs, no one is talking about the lions or the cowboys they're talking about the officials. And yes, I would agree that officials should have to go to a podium and answer questions after a game, the same as players and coaches have to do, having officials have to answer question from the media or from espn ext after a game particularly a game when a official had a big part to play in the outcome, would provide a little bit of accountability to some of these officials.

Brad Allen looks at Skipper as the reporting shout comes and he announces 70 eligible, why didn’t Detroit correct the ref? If you go back to the replay, about 2 seconds before the start of the replay they show here and from a different angle you see #70 running onto the field signaling that he is reporting as eligible. The ref looks and points at him just as this replay starts and #70 drops his arms down (you can see the arms drop and the official pointing in this replay) and the two other players (58 & 68) are not yet close to the ref. The refs job at that point is to immediately go over to the defense and tell them the reporting player (70) so that the defense has time to make an adjustment (which they do and #2 goes out and another player comes on) and then the ref announced to the stadium that #70 is eligible. The Lions sideline had to hear that announcement and could have corrected it, but they didn't. The refs did not miss any call here, they weren't confused, they did exactly what they were supposed to do when a player comes on the field signaling that he is eligible. If anyone screwed up here it was #70 coming on the field signaling he was eligible, or the Lions coaches not telling #70 he wasn't going to be eligible on this play. But also #68 didn't make sure he was reported to the ref. If you watch the play you can see that Cowboys #4 is covering #70 waiting for him to go out and noone covers #68 because he is ineligible. That is the only reason the play worked like it did. This is why there were 2 penalties called on the play: Illegal Touching #68, and Illegal Formation #70. I don't understand how these guys can study the play and not see this unless the only thing they looked at was this camera angle.

That being said.. from my perspective.. they ( the three linemen that approached the ref ) were clearly trying to confuse the Dallas Cowboys.. and it worked.. problem was.. it also confused the ref !

Let's get this straight....the Lions would never have had a chance at that last drive if the officials FIRST hadn't called that BS tripping call on Hendershot. But no one is talking about that bad call. Lions were gifted a chance to win. If it was the other way around everyone would be saying how the Cowboys should have never allowed it to be that close and how they should have closed the game out indefinitely so it doesn't come down to a "decision" win. Goal posts are always moved when it comes to the Cowboys.

  • @joshuat5140

It's clear what happened. 68 reported and the ref seen 70 there too and made a mistake. Sadly that ref call cost lions the game. 70 was around with 68 to not show the defense 68 is getting the ball.

    • @ryankelly9032

The erroneous tripping call the put the Cowboys out of field goal range on the previous drive is the only reason Detroit even had that chance.

I disagree with the statement that what Detroit did was against the spirit of the rules. Players have certain numbers so that the other team will know which players are eligible. When a player with an ineligible number wants to be eligible, he reports so that everyone on the field knows which player is eligible. The Lions seemed to be sending three linemen into one spot to confuse the announcement. That's against the spirit of the rules. Put simply, that's cheating. There was no reason for 70 to run at the official at that point. If he wasn't reporting as eligible, he could have gone to the huddle.
If the Lions weren't sending three players to one spot to create confusion but just did that by accident, then the official messed up the whole situation. That's not Detroit's fault, but they shouldn't be allowed to win on a play where the Cowboys were told very clearly by the officials that only number 70 was eligible. Detroit can't claim that they would have scored anyway. If Dallas had known that 68 was supposed to be the eligible receiver, they would have covered him. Maybe he still would have scored. Maybe he wouldn't. Either way, the Cowboys deserved the chance to defend all of the eligible receivers as told to them by the officials. The officials' mistake cost the Lions their chance to win with a trick play, but neither team should be allowed to benefit on that mistake.
When all is said and done, the officials made two game-changing mistakes in the last two minutes. The first of those mistakes was the tripping call against Dallas when the Detroit edge was trying to trip Tony Pollard. If the officials had handled that play correctly, the Cowboys would have run out the clock. If they had allowed Detroit to win on a play where they announced the wrong player as eligible, they would have given Detroit the game on two mistakes in the final two minutes.
That the officials made two such game-changing mistakes in the last two minutes of the game hurts the game of football.

I don’t understand why Dallas was passing, especially after their last first down, instead of running the ball. They had somewhere around 3 minutes left on the clock, if I remember right the Lions didn’t have anymore timeouts, yet they continued to pass stopping the clock at every incompletion while they were in the lead. Run the clock out and we don’t have the controversy. If the Lions would’ve went for the extra point after the penalty who knows who would’ve won in overtime. 🤦‍♂️

68 didn’t visually notify by raising arm and patting chest as is required by tackle eligibility rules plain and simple. 70 runs on the field doing it and the ref saw that and declared him and announced over the PA with plenty of time for Campbell or the players to say wait 68 is the tackle eligible . They tried to be tricky and got caught

I have said this for as long as I have been a Lions fan: if we don’t utterly blow out a team in a big game against a league/gambling darling, we get hosed. Every close game against one of these big jersey sellers with an ultra rich heavily invested owner (usually it’s the cowboys) ends up turning on a blown call in a tight spot where it is entirely up to the refs and no one can understand the call. We don’t have a big market, we don’t make the league money, so the calls don’t go our way. Dallas has the kind of fan base and money to pay off these yapping heads the next day, create a narrative that they get paid to create and move on like it was the Lions fault. It’s disgusting and it’s been happening for as long as I can remember.

Well, if you want to really go down memory lane, the Lions got handed a game to them by the refs back in the 80s, when they had 12 men on the field while kicking a long field goal against the Cowboys. That loss cost Dallas home field advantage, and they had to play the Niners in SF instead of Dallas.

    1. Yes, these officials need to do better
    2. A real super-bowl winner starts wherever in the playoffs (no matter the seed) and wins it all. Everyone's record is 0-0 in the playoffs. Overcome.
