Just because they're fashionable doesn't mean they're comfortable. Most athletic shoes or similar (Nike, Adidas, Converse, etc) aren't designed for comfort and for older people who have issues these are not options. Unfortunately, most styles are designed for younger people unless you have a lot of $$$ to spend.
For me, discovering New Balance 20ish years ago changed my comfort level up about 5 notches. Enough firm padding, arch not too high or too unsupported, a pretty flat sole not shaped like a canoe, but not a plank either. I can go 2 miles in 30 minutes in them. I don't care if white with logo isn't in fashion. And I still wear the same size shirts and pants as I did when I was 30. But the trouble is, my wardrobe is predictable. I still want to go back to a hawaiian shirt and blue spiky hair. But at 75, that's just too odd. But at least it's not a bar rat look.
You mentioned trends. When I worked at Nordstrom selling suits I often attempted to convince my customers that style would be better than fashion. If you are spending $500 + for a suit go with style and save yourself some money in the long run. Oh yeah, have it tailored, it comes with the price of the suit.
I am in my very very early 50’s. I never cared how I look. And even if I did, I didn’t know how to dress myself because no one taught me. I used to wear oversized shirts, baggy pants, etc. You get the picture. Four years ago, I started watching RUclips videos on how to dress properly and to take good care of one’s body. I got rid of my old clothes and invested a few thousand pesos on new clothing. I now feel much more confident and look way much better. Thank you very much!!!
@pig - have you found that your life has changed dramatically and, hopefully, for the better? Note: your RUclips name, “pig,” may no longer be appropriate! 😂
Always had a problem with shirts. I was a bodybuilder. I have a 19.5" neck, 52" chest, and a 38" waist (today). It used to be much smaller with the same neck and chest. It helped get tailored shirts.
@atulchaturvedi6059 I'm chunky now, but I was on stage freshly waxed and spray tanned in 2006. Got out of the Army in 2007 at 195lbs with an 8-pack. Car accident a couple years later got me 14 screws, a plate, and two bars in my neck. I can't even lift the plates to put them on the bar now.
Hey John, as a younger man 27 years old to be precise I always love your lifestyle and style videos they've helped me so much! Why go after all of the latest trends when classic and sophisticated with a modern twist will always stay? Not to mention it looks way better than any trend that will come and go anyway. Thanks my friend
As an even older man in his late 50's with a waistline which is more round than I'd like and a very thick neck, I found buying dress shirts that actually button up resulted in my having way too much baggy fabric. Fixed this by buying larger neck size with slim cut fitting. Works a treat.
Im in my 60's and have always stayed in shape. I was an athlete and I never stopped going to the gym. The clothes I wear a pretty different than what you show in this video. I agree that the clothes you show in this video look better on you than the picures from the 90's. That works for you. Clothing really comes down to preference. I prefer Western style clothing. Wranglers with a button down shirt, Dan Post boots and a Stetson. I agree with a snug fit on shirts but slim fit pants are not for me. Tennis shoes I wear to the gym and thats the only time I wear them. I never wear loafers and dress shoes are a thing of the past for me. When I wear a suit I wear dress boots. Everyone has their own style. You have to wear what you like and be yourself. Interesting video.
At 72 I wear white trainers and chinos with a white or dark color always short sleeve shirt. I think this is a good look at 52 or 72 and suits the Spanish weather to walk around in. Another good video John 🙏
This is a VERY GOOD video, everything you mentioned on here is how I wear my clothes and I am in my 40's. I always wear fitted clothes, slim fit to be exact. That comparison when you wore the baggy clothes and the fitted slim fit was like night and day.
Having shirt-stays definitely help keep the shirt down and prevents bunching. Certainly something we used in the Marine Corps. Moreover, really having self awareness and a little attention to detail, goes a long way as well.
Excellent point and thank you for your service. As long as the neck and sleeve length are the proper size, even my roomiest dress shirts look form-fitted when paired with shirt stays. In fact his "before" photo would look noticeably different with shirt-stays if not for the sleeves being too long.
Shirt-stays are totally unnecessary if you get your pants off of your hips and have them at the natural waist. Not to mention that it looks way better. This guy’s whole style is built on wearing his pants too low. It forces all of his other rules like shirt fit all the way down to leg openings.
@@notyoungnotold3730 Billowy shirts are unflattering regardless of the rise of the trousers. But shirt stays can address that issue by applying a constant downward force ie a perpetual exertion of a tucking action onto the shirt, resulting in a more streamlined silhouette.
@@tuberific454 I might want a streamlined silhouette if I were a torpedo, or possibly a sea-lion. Being neither, I don't want to look as though someone has painted clothes on my body - you probably look absolutely fine in your choice of clothes, but I just wouldn't. Shirt stays are pointless if you wear genuinely waist-fitting trousers: braces/suspenders also help, and render shirt-tucking totally unnecessary.
That is because your shirt doesn't fit. If your shirt fits, you can have it stay down. Plus your trousers as someone stated below aren't fitting correctly, because they wouldn't let your shirt move much. Also, your undershirt and the placement of your undershirt matters. The undershirt inside your underwear helps your shirt stay down. All should fit and drape naturally. The only stays you should have are collar stays.
Classic Styles with modern fits.. Let the younger guys chase trends.. Thank you.. Your channel helps me a lot about improving how I dress properly. More videos..
All of your commentary is spot on. It's so surprising to me that guys resist these simple guidelines. It's amazing how dressing properly can add confidence and dressing "ordinary" can, well, make you ordinary.
I spend the European winters in the UAE and there I only wear tailored Kandoras. Wearing a kandora makes life so much easier when deciding what to wear.
Just go for Italian style all the way and you are golden. Doesn't really matter what it is. I always wear Italian sneakers and they look classy with everything. I have no idea how the Italians do it but they never fail to deliver.
Finally got my son back in Ralph Lauren button down’s. He just bought a gorgeous pair of Armani loafers. A fabulous dark brown leather weave w/ a tassle.
Pleated pants give off a very classic and classy look...I have both pleats and flat front pants in my wardrobe and love them both...it all depends on what shirt or sweater one is wearing that day...simply pair them accordingly...in short: don't toss your pleats...
I feel that the key to pleated pants is to wear them at the natural waist, which is at or just slightly below your belly button. Pleats never look right on mid or low-rise pants. Flat-front pants look better on pants that are mid-rise. I'm not a fan of low-rise slacks or suit pants.
This always boils down to body shape. I stand by timeless fashion. Whether on person or in home decor, you must ask yourself if you can stand behind yesterdays photos w/o embarrassment! It’s quite personal
Fit, fit, fit, fit, fit! Great advice. But I am a boat shoe guy. Like you always say, it’s how you pair them. Also, you really need to find the right ones. There are a many brands doing boat shoes out there, but really only one that does it right.
I really enjoy your videos. Great content and always well delivered. Keep up the great work. Now I have to go figure out what to wear for our family breakfast outing.😊
Great content. I am relatively fit but my dress style is outdated. At least my better half tells me that all the time. Watching your video made me realize that I still have pleated dress pants and other styles I wear that just does not fit my image anymore. Thanks!
Your better half? She’s not better than you, she’s barely a quarter of everything you stand for. She doesn’t get to dictate how you dress. You’re the better half here, manhood is a dominant force of it’s own.
Great advise. Will share with my husband. I think the average man looks best wearing solid colored button down shirts with rolled up sleeves. An easy go to for casual days. Most women love the look!!
I just enjoyed this video! There are really useful recommendations in it! Thanks! I‘d like to contribute with one fashion sin that freaks me out when I see it. I think it is an absolute no-go when a tie is either tied too short or too long! The tip of the tie must end directly above the belt buckle. Most men get it right but some just don’t put much effort into this affair. Mostly, the tie is tied too short and I really think that this reveals a certain lack of diligence when it comes to being dressed correctly.
John great show boat shoes are always in style on boats as they prevent slipping and the white soles do not leave marks on the deck. Wearing anything else will not be appreciated by the owner and maybe awkward
Brian - sir...I would think at your age, you 😜would be elated to simply just be above ground with average ambulation - are you looking to become a walk - way model! Big hugs
I'm an over 50 guy and this is great for me. Wey can see hiw a "Bad" shirt or trousers can downgrade our image and in that way, our confidence. Awesome video. Cheers.
Your clothes should always have a tailored look. It's always better to buy quality over quantity. It takes planning and avoiding being impulsive, buying clothes that are a "good deal." Great video! Men need to keep up to stay relevant-maintaining your image. But, don't fall victim to the extreme fashion trends after thirty. Focus more on proper tailoring and fit.
Great video, you are doing man-kind a service! Just got rid of a pair of square-toe dress shoes I still had. A pair of "my favorite pleat dress pants" I found recently in my closet and since I lost a lot of weight and now have the same size I had 25 years ago I thought to try it on again. Man, I couldn't believe I was ever wearing that! Threw it out instantly.
44 year old male chiming in late. I dress for myself and really like the vintage look and comfort they offer. Became a huge fan of suspenders, and the fuller cut of classic American suits. For shoes, loafers are my regular go to. Sneakers fill in for work and outdoor activities like camping and hiking. I think confidence is the #1 way to pull off any look. You can wear the trendiest cloths, but if your not comfortable in them or they don’t move with your body, it’s going to be a terrible look.
you clearly miss the point. trends vs style is a major difference. when you are wearing something that looks timeless and classic, you feel better and others notice. I'm a larger guy and walk down the street and get 20 complements not because I look like a model, but my style is timeless and appropriate. I'm in my mid-40s and not dressing like I'm 10. I'm also 250 plus lbs and dress to fit my body style, not a trend.
67 here, agree with all you said and I try to go the route you suggest with one exception. I live in a coastal environment where marinas abound ( I also have a boat). My main shoe choice is a classic boat shoe, Sperry, in a mono-color dark brown upper and white sole. You can wear then in many situations even dress them up if they're in good shape. I'll be watching more of your videos...thanks!
Yep, you almost need a separate video just for folks that live along the coast of Florida. Whole different idea here as to what is acceptable or not LOL and rarely even see long pants anywhere on anyone under 70, even in nice restaurants. And boat shoes are everywhere, almost as common as flip flops 🤣
John you are correct with everything that you said. The key is to go classic. It is good taste and frankly it never goes out of style. There is nothing worse than seeing some guy with square-toed shoes that thinks he is hip LOL on another note I'm going on week 4 with the girl I met who is my age. Slow and strong
I live in hot, dry Texas, I mostly wear stay dry shorts and shirts most of the year but when I dress up I wear stay dry golf attire. Its typically up to current fashion style and super comfy. I'm in my mid 60s so its all I need in my life.
@@ardentdfender4116 It's just a matter of personal preference. Some people don't like pleated or cuffed pants. I like both. I grew up wearing both. I think it's a good look. Same with flat front pants and non cuffed pants.
@@jrh11254 Never really cared if something was in style or not. If I like it, I'll wear it. I believe that if you buy something simply because you like it, you won't care if it's considered out of style. You'll wear it and enjoy wearing it.
@@Joey21071 Yeah mine is a personal preference and that all my Trousers are custom tailored. My trousers are mostly either light to medium wool high waisted pants and have s very nice drape. The quality of material is also very good. I also agree that when it comes to cotton type trousers, i mostly elect to go flat front on those as the cotton don’t drape well. But everything is a preference.
Great video and advice…funny cause last night I was in fact doing a closet purge…I tried on every single dress shirt I own and although they are high quality dress shirts, I found most were way to large & ill fitting, making me look like I was drowning in fabric…I recently bought some shirts from Untuckit, a shop that specializes in shirts that are meant to be worn untucked as the name implies. Even though I’m carrying a little extra weight around the middle they fit great at the shoulders and chest. When I tried these on and compared them to my current dress shirts, well I couldn’t believe how I’ve been wearing those frumpy dress shirts…53 yrs old and barely figuring out I’ve been wearing the wrong clothes all these years…it’s all about the fit, great advice!
6:10 I think my issue is proportions. I’m 5’8” 155 pounds, I have very slender legs compared to my upper body and I wear slim fit pants, but sometimes (at least to me) it can look off on me especially when I wear a jacket 😭 I just want to look good
Right on, right on, man. Your approach is 100% on point. Love the message: everything you do and say (and wear) sends a message. Make sure you send the right message.
I had 10 pairs of square toe shoes and threw them away like you suggested. Then the next day I read in a magazine that they were coming back into fashion!!
I'm not even thinking so much about clothes but still know that classic style is the way to go. I agree with everything you said, especially with that pleted pants and that shirts shall be somewhat slim. As I am slim so it fits me well.
I am afraid that I am going to have to dissent from a few things that you said in the video. First, boat shoes are definitely not something that you have to give up if you are over 40. When I was in my twenties (and I’m 65 now) I remember seeing very distinguished gentleman wearing a polo shirt, navy blazer, chinos and boat shoes. In my opinion, the look was timeless. The key, however, is to have a good looking pair of boat shoes, not the pair that you bought ten years ago. The other thing that I will disagree with is pleated pants. In the photo you posted, the biggest issue is the length of the pants, not the pleats. Fix that, and you have a fine fit. Finally, you fall into the trap of thinking that clothes need to be form fitting to look nice. I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve seen younger guys, with athletic builds even, go for the slimmest fit possible. The end result is a hideous look where fabric is bunched at every joint. The classic look is a clean drape from the top of the garment to the bottom. That is best achieved by giving some room to move in the garment, and not hugging too closely to the body. Obviously, gentleman who have extra pounds are at a disadvantage. But the most important thing that they can do to improve the lines between shirts and pants is to wear suspenders instead of a belt. The pants hang better and the shirts drape better with that simple change. Of course, that encourages the wearing of sports coats and blazers to hide the suspenders. But surprise! As an older guy, you can pull that off easily.
Totally agree with everything. Boat shoes are your dad's shoes. Driving mocs are much better (last photo about casual loafers from Tod's, the best and most elegant driving shoes in my opinion). Pleated pants it's a big no, something from the 90's or 2000. Even if there is a comeback, I will never wear pleated pants again. Shirts too large, or oversized. It's something from the past and it doesn't fit you. I still have a few shirts from Polo RL classic fit (good quality, they last forever), but I only wear them on weekends under a sweater. There is a trend about oversize clothing, but in my opinion it doesn't fit your body.
Not long ago I wore my best pullover for a visit to a new dentist office. The staff commented on it. In fact, the receptionist said that her dad had worn that same pullover in the 1990s. Which is probably when I got it. I still wear it.
I personally am wearing my threads longer. Nothing wrong with using our clothing until it actually wears out and not be so concerned about style. Wear it in your own style and keep consumption down. Share those extra funds with others in need.
well, if you want to date, you do have be presentable and stood out a bit. yes, there are women that is not concern about it but they are far and between, unfortunately.
@@slam5 If you're in shape, so long as you don't dress like a bum, women will notice. But the key is being in shape. I'm in my late mid-50's and nothing turns women's heads more than being fit (which I am). I don't date (married almost 26 yrs), but I can tell you for a fact that being physically fit is more important than dressing in trendy clothes or getting covered in "tats" just to fit in with the younger crowd.
I stopped by to watch your video and to my surprise, my clothing was tracking right along with you, except for tennis shoes. I stopped wearing them years ago! Two thumbs up for a great video!
As an octogenarian I wholeheartedly endorse your "streamlined" approach. I am so glad that the "oversized" generation of clothes is over. I hate bigger than needed shirts and baggy pants, and being an old "shoe dog" I particularly like the streamlined look in footwear. I still have 3 or 4 pairs of classic Allen-Edmonds dress shoes and I will dust them off and wear them with pleasure.
Good advice as always. I do have a slight issue with some slim-fit trousers due to the size of my calves. I tend to go for "regular-fit" trousers though I can see the slimmer ones being a bit better for the overall look.
Nothing wrong with “chasing” and wearing current trends at 40+ if you can actually pull it off. I dress more conservatively (appropriately) at the office, with well fitted and semi-tailored clothing. Then on evening and weekends I let my youthful energy and expression out with more artistic and creative clothing choices. Yes, they make me appear less professional, but I don’t care, because it’s outside of work and I am expressing the way I feel inside… and it’s fun to not follow every rule just because your supposed to look like a serious “dad”.
Pretty sound advice, What about socks or no socks? Wearing a shirt outside the trousers or tucked in? Wearing a necktie with a short-sleeved dress shirt? (I never would, always open collar with short sleeves. Wearing a necktie with a long-sleeved dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow is OK).
There is definitely a fine line between loose and baggy. I definitely don’t want baggy shirts and pants but at the same time I don’t want them to tight, it just isn’t comfortable for me. Like the man said, trial and error is the key. Very informative video.
I like the relaxed fit.I dont dig the waiting for a flood look.Has to go over the top off my shoe.I hate when ya sit down and your pants go up to the top of your calf.I agree with him on the shoes.

@pig - have you found that your life has changed dramatically and, hopefully, for the better?
Note: your RUclips name, “pig,” may no longer be appropriate! 😂
You’re very welcome!

But Mr Pig, are you pulling in the girls, or boys, now?
All very good tips. There's nothing worse than frumpy fit. Time to update the looks. Thank you for sharing.
Always had a problem with shirts. I was a bodybuilder. I have a 19.5" neck, 52" chest, and a 38" waist (today). It used to be much smaller with the same neck and chest. It helped get tailored shirts.
With this body specs who needs a shirt?😂😂😂
@atulchaturvedi6059 I'm chunky now, but I was on stage freshly waxed and spray tanned in 2006. Got out of the Army in 2007 at 195lbs with an 8-pack. Car accident a couple years later got me 14 screws, a plate, and two bars in my neck. I can't even lift the plates to put them on the bar now.
@@madwhitehatter Hate that for you brother. Thank you for your service.
Great presentation and advice..style is what counts... .Realized, I was leaning towards loose size pants and shirts..so a course correction needed!
Hey John, as a younger man 27 years old to be precise I always love your lifestyle and style videos they've helped me so much! Why go after all of the latest trends when classic and sophisticated with a modern twist will always stay? Not to mention it looks way better than any trend that will come and go anyway. @@40OverFashion You're welcome!
As an even older man in his late 50's with a waistline which is more round than I'd like and a very thick neck, I found buying dress shirts that actually button up resulted in my having way too much baggy fabric. Fixed this by buying larger neck size with slim cut fitting. Works a treat.
A good tailor can also dart a shirt to fix that somewhat within reason.

Awesome, thank you!
Interesting video.
for me the only consideration is comfort.
Each to their own. Comfort first.
John, I’m trying to catch up with all your videos!
Thanks so much for this one. I totally agree with all your recommendations. Thanks!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
At 72 I wear white trainers and chinos with a white or dark color always short sleeve shirt. I think this is a good look at 52 or 72 and suits the Spanish weather to walk around in. Another good video John 🙏
Thank you!
You have spoken MY MIND precisely. Lots of applause and appreciation. I'm gonna share with my family and friediends.
Great advice. But as long as I am a boat guy, I will keep using both my brown and my blue boat shoes. 😊

Pleated pants are for communit deviants.
Pleated pants fit some better.
I feel that the key to pleated pants is to wear them at the natural waist, which is at or just slightly below your belly button. Pleats never look right on mid or low-rise pants. Flat-front pants look better on pants that are mid-rise. I'm not a fan of low-rise slacks or suit pants.
pleated pants arent classy LOL. you look like you work forBest Buy
If you’re thin.
I hate wearing flat front , but I opt for pleated pants. I wear pleated (single and multi pleats ) trousers since April 2014.😊
This always boils down to body shape. I stand by timeless fashion. Whether on person or in home decor, you must ask yourself if you can stand behind yesterdays photos w/o embarrassment! It’s quite personal

Great content. I am relatively fit but my dress style is outdated. At least my better half tells me that all the time. Watching your video made me realize that I still have pleated dress pants and other styles I wear that just does not fit my image anymore. Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Your better half? She’s not better than you, she’s barely a quarter of everything you stand for. She doesn’t get to dictate how you dress. You’re the better half here, manhood is a dominant force of it’s own.
If I only had that thick beautiful hair. My friend had an app on his phone that added the image of gray hair like yours, and I look amazing !
Great advise. Will share with my husband. I think the average man looks best wearing solid colored button down shirts with rolled up sleeves. An easy go to for casual days. Most women love the look!!
Except that’s out of fashion. The video host isn’t wearing a solid shirt.
Never roll up your sleeves (for the look). If you want short sleeves, wear a short sleeve shirt.

A nice pair of Oxford or Derby leather shoes are always a good choice, Brogues if wearing a kilt though.
Agree with everything said in this video - we’ll done.
Thank you!
John great show boat shoes are always in style on boats as they prevent slipping and the white soles do not leave marks on the deck. Wearing anything else will not be appreciated by the owner and maybe awkward
As an 88 y/o male, what I wear is fashionable - it's what other people wear that is unfashionable.
Brian - sir...I would think at your age, you 😜would be elated to simply just be above ground with average ambulation - are you looking to become a walk - way model! Big hugs
At 88, whatever you want to do is fine. You have earned the right.

Sr you are right😅😅
I'm an over 50 guy and this is great for me. Wey can see hiw a "Bad" shirt or trousers can downgrade our image and in that way, our confidence.
Awesome video. Cheers.
Your clothes should always have a tailored look. It's always better to buy quality over quantity. It takes planning and avoiding being impulsive, buying clothes that are a "good deal."
Great video! Men need to keep up to stay relevant-maintaining your image. But, don't fall victim to the extreme fashion trends after thirty. Focus more on proper tailoring and fit.
God help us all then, if a man`s relevance is measured by the cut of his clothes.
Good stuff!
This
you clearly miss the point. trends vs style is a major difference. when you are wearing something that looks timeless and classic, you feel better and others notice. I'm a larger guy and walk down the street and get 20 complements not because I look like a model, but my style is timeless and appropriate. I'm in my mid-40s and not dressing like I'm 10. I'm also 250 plus lbs and dress to fit my body style, not a trend.
this is the first video i watched, and i subscribed it and have sent to my school/college groups,...good job sir..need of the hour..

I am 37 and already looking to settle into that classic look as I approach 40. Thanks for the advice
I actually like the look of both the pleated and flat front pants. I've had both, and I liked both.
I’m with you on that. I even wear cuffs on my trouser. The important thing is to get your cloth properly tailored.
@Joseph - pleats are cycling back now. Hope they are confined to fabric that drapes well; cotton, for me, never worked with pleats.

Well said!
I love the style you recommend for older men. Wearing only expensive dresses one look no elegant but it should fit on one perfectly.
I had 10 pairs of square toe shoes and threw them away like you suggested. Then the next day I read in a magazine that they were coming back into fashion!!
He said “don’t chase trends - at our age. If you are 20-30’s go for it.
Am just about to hit 50 and am really starting to think about my wardrobe differently.. thanks for the advice
Of course! Thanks for watching Lee!
Focus attention on getting into shape (if you are not already)... That goes farther than clothing style, but don't dress like a bum either.
Excellent Vid.thx for all your advice ...Yes I took notes ;)
Not long ago I wore my best pullover for a visit to a new dentist office. The staff commented on it. In fact, the receptionist said that her dad had worn that same pullover in the 1990s. Which is probably when I got it. I still wear it.
A boutonniere pinned on a dress shirt. Love it.
I'm love my boat shoes! If you do a meetup in the summer I'll definitely wear them! 😁 I like them with chinos and a polo.
Classic and timeless, unlike "driving loafers"
Curious- what brand are the sneakers you show, towards the beginning?
Check out Thursday sneakers, and Ace Mark’s. I showed both of them.

Good advice as always. I do have a slight issue with some slim-fit trousers due to the size of my calves. I tend to go for "regular-fit" trousers though I can see the slimmer ones being a bit better for the overall look.

I have thicker athletic legs so I can’t do slim either. More generous filts actually look like slim on me. Just blessed I guess…
New to your site, very good info. Between you and the Duke of Windsor I think I’ve got what I’ve been looking for. Thanks
LMAO - love it...I was going to dance clubs at 50...bumping and grinding - LMAO!
Don’t follow trends you just blend in
Pretty sound advice, What about socks or no socks? Wearing a shirt outside the trousers or tucked in? Wearing a necktie with a short-sleeved dress shirt? (I never would, always open collar with short sleeves. Wearing a necktie with a long-sleeved dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow is OK).
There is definitely a fine line between loose and baggy. I definitely don’t want baggy shirts and pants but at the same time I don’t want them to tight, it just isn’t comfortable for me. Like the man said, trial and error is the key. Very informative video.
