I have to say that this video would have a lot of value to anyone finding your channel for the first time. It just encapsulates the whole idea of what your channel is all about. Thank you!
John, I follow you all the time and really appreciate your advice. I have followed a ton of it. There are a few good RUclipsrs in the men's fashion space, but you are the only one really concentrating on our age demographic, which is outstanding. The only things I would add to this list are a few must-have, basic accessories. Namely, belts to match your shoe choices (except for the white sneakers), one good pair of sunglasses in your favorite style (but not "sport" sunglasses), and a nice watch on a bracelet (probably stainless steel).
Totally agree Daniel. Particularly about sunglasses, a watch, and a bracelet. All of those can be found with good craftsmanship, understated, and classy without breaking the bank. About eight years ago, or so, I found the sunglass brand "Raen". I own four pairs of their glasses, and all were discounted. I'm NOT paying $150 to $200 or more. Same thing for a couple of brand name watches, and two simple, classy bracelets. A little time spent searching "discount" whatever on the internet can really pay off. All the best, Mark
John, I am telling you. You are the consummate male fashion consultant. I strongly believe that you have the eye to outfit just about any man. That said, I have almost 100% of what you presented in this video. You are a valuable asset to the fashion industry for men. Well done!
I prefer black tennis shoes over white because until someone's close they look more formal and no one wears white dress shoes so with white it obvious from a distance you're wearing sneakers. Also white shows dirt more.
I literally emptied out my closet today and donated everything to Goodwill. My clothes were so outdated. It’s time to go hit the Nordstrom rack and get ready for Spring. Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I needed.
Good stuff. I like that your shirts don't have any brand logos other than on the inside label. I have a few with a little logo sewn on the breast pocket, like the little Polo or Brooks Brothers logo, but I try to avoid it if I can. Total person preference.
It's difficult to dress well in my climate (northwest Minnesota) where it's snowmobile season 8 months out of the year (just had snow on March 25th). But I want to break out of this lumberjack rut and add some style to my wardrobe. Time to clean out my closet and head to Nordstroms/Macy's. May I ask, what brand is the shirt you're wearing in the video? And what brand chino's do you prefer?
Great video. Agree 100% about the metal eyelets on sneakers, wish Thursday would get away from them. I wear a size 15 shoe and I’m looking for some sneakers. Trying to decide between Koio and Oliver Cabell at this point. Any suggestions?
Re the brown sneakers, are they appropriate when wearing shorts? I'm normally a top-sider kind of guy, but I'm thinking I should leave my preppy side behind and move over to the sneaker. Consider a pair of khaki chino shorts or perhaps even navy. What's the shoe option?
Hey @John, how do you view this shoe curation that leans towards minimalism or capsule wardrobe: 1. Oxford Black Boot with Brogue 2. Chelsea Boot Medium/Dark Brown 3. Dress Sneaker White 4. Penny Loafers Medium/Dark Brown 5. Double Monk Strap Burgundy 6. Slip-in Sneakers *I'm a boots guy, so listed formal boots instead of shoes :)
Absolute staples for any man; 1 pair plain white trainers 1 pair Adidas Originals Samba Super/Gazelle/Spezial 1 pair Chelsea boots 1 pair Levis 501s or 511s 1 white shirt 1 leather jacket 1 plain black t shirt 1 navy blazer/sport coat There are dozens of looks you can achieve just from that short list, and they will all look amazing I have two really good rules that I follow when it comes to kitting out my wardrobe and how I dress. 1. Put some thought into how you choose your outfit, put your clothes on with care, then forget you're wearing them 2. Would Daniel Craig's James Bond wear it? (he's the only Bond who can pull off 'casual')
I am updating my wardrobe for the past 3 years, step by step. This video puts everything together perfectly! I couldn’t think of a better capsule wardrobe.
Personally, I am a sweater addict. I stopped counting at 80. I have them in every style, color and texture. They are all high quality and will last for years.
On boots...what is your opinion around western boots vs chukka boots? I've grown up wearing western boots my entire life and, while I'm trying to elevate my wardrobe, I'm hoping that western boots would work.
Yeah, I don’t have a problem with Western style boots, it’s just not something that I grew up with or know much about. What I’ve seen out in public looks nice.
L.L. Bean has a very deep collection of shirts, polo, T-shirts, sweaters/shirts, sweaters, jeans. Their Double L Polo's are very nice & won't break the budget plus looks great after many years.
Yep 👍🏻. I don’t understand why men would sport chewed off nails and ratty cuticles rather than manicured. We use our hands in handshakes, to write with, to gesture in business meetings. People may not say anything, BUT THEY NOTICE! A manicure every two weeks keeps hands clean and in check. 😉👍🏻
This is timely for me John. I lean more towards classics. I’ve been away from the channel for a while but I’m back. I’m a little older (60s) and, like you, realized that without a trainer I was never going to get back in shape again. Lifting weighs and doing the cardio. It’s been about five weeks. I’m down probably 6 or seven pounds losing fat and building muscle. Nothing fits and I’m not sure where I’m going to end up. I have very few clothes left to wear. And what I can wear are skinny jeans, not great, to say the least. So this is great for when I decide what to buy again. Thanks for clarifying the grey tints. I think 150 lbs. is the target and I’m down from 165 or so. I have the sweaters at least, some decent outer wear. And good shoes from Allen Edmonds, but really nothing else.
Right! Because I have a pair of brown and grey ones. They are of a rather expensive European brand and yet I sorted both pairs out, they are not comfortable at all. A bummer and wasted money.
Thanks John. This is the video I always wanted. I need to completely redo my wardrobe and had felt frustrated that I didn't know where to start. Your video is a blessing.
Good grief! Watching this video is like you're saying, "Man, you're on the right track." For brown dress sneakers, I prefer the ones with black soles, I think they look more dressy. As always, great video, John! Thank You!
Basic is pretty much the same every day. 3-4 colours all year round that match among them. Brown leather boots any day, brown shoes the odd day. Simples.
I do appreciate your advice, but you should maybe consider skin tone for different. Maybe your next video should include what colour should white or black person should consider. Just my opinion for difference,
Sneakers? How can you use the words sneakers & fashion in the same sentence. Sneakers are for exercising in. For casual shoes just use boat shoes, loafers or casual boots. Sneakers are for children. And no man over 40 should be wearing pale blue or faded jeans. Dark indigo blue or black only. Once they start wearing and/or fading downgrade them to gardening clothes.
As a man over 40 living in California there’s really only one thing you have to get right. Your wallet. Those that live in California know exactly what I’m talking about.
I would wear green chinos, Brown Dr martens Loafers and blue socks and a dark blue shirt. I think it all comes down to the nuances and style in the clothing, nothing bright in my wardrope.
Always great tips. Been following for a few years and always wondered what you would suggest men like me do when it comes to tucked in shirts or polos. I suffer from a form of arthritis that makes my back arch forward making my torso look disproportionately shorter. Being a tall slim guy with long legs, tucking in anything makes me look like the top of my pants are way too high compared to the length of my legs . Making it awkward to wear a jacket with a tucked shirt or polo. Any suggestions/tips?
Suede is still made? That ended decades ago right? Apologies but the suggestions in this content do not match the 2 places I live in which are Honolulu and Doha. Appreciate the polo shirts, that's about all.
In a past video you mentioned a shirt button hack that allows you to have the shirt unbuttoned but adjustable and not "too open" Can anyone let me know where to find. I have looked everywhere to no avail.
I do not particularly like suede of any kind because if you spill red wine or sauce on it it is hard to clean them, and when you do clean them the texture becomes smooth, disaster in my opinion.
I live in a pretty hot climate myself, and I’ve done a bunch of videos on shorts and linen, but absolutely expect something more coming later this spring. Stay tuned!
As always, great tips. And I wasn't aware of the Weston Jon Boucher brand, but it looks very stylish, so thank you. Do you think that it will hold up well for a few years? And do you have/wear things apart from the polo?
Your right about the sneaker sole being white. Also, to all the idiots wearing all white shoes in the winter in New England with snow on the ground, get a clue!
Hi john, thanks for your videos. Your videos really inspire me & trust me i have been trying to look for some content for people like me over 40. You have just made it so easy for me bro! Thanks once again. 🙏
Just curious about what your take is on wearing athletic shoes in a casual setting. The sneakers you showed look great but can get uncomfortable if I’m on my feet all day or doing a lot of walking. I think a clean pair of running shoes can compliment jeans and shorts. Great video👍
That’s interesting, I wear those shoes out all day, and never have a problem with them getting uncomfortable. Now yes, running shoes would be more supportive, but also not appropriate unless you’re running or exercising.
Hey saw you doing the pickleball thing yesterday at SoCal ! (at least I think it was you). Anyway great channel and I always look forward to the next video!
One of your best style videos John!! I prefer the white sneakers with gum soles and I too prefer the black, navy, brown sneakers with white soles - Weston Jon Boucher has some great products that all fit great - will def be checking out their polos - you mentioned quite a few items I need to pick up in 2024! Live well John! 🫡
agree about the all-black sneakers; I have matching pairs of onitsuka tigers, one white, one black, and the black pair doesn't seem be worn nearly as often; somehow, it lacks substance.
John, I like how you clarified “button down” collar shirts versus “button up” shirts. If you think about it, button down collar shirts are actually button up shirts, but does anybody actually button their shirts from the bottom up? I don’t think so, most people button their shirts down from top to bottom. Reminds me of Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on first?” shtick.
LEGEND You’ve taught me well. I have every piece you mentioned in this video! And that includes the polos you talked about, Thursday boots and jackets from The Jacket Maker! Thanks for another great video, John!
Solid video! I agree on the black sneakers with the white sole. I have a pair of all-black sneakers, but I find myself not wearing them most days. I guess white is just more versatile for my wardrobe.
I saw online recently a pair of black sneakers with a gum sole. I've never been a big white sneaker fan, so what do you think of the idea of black with a gum sole (I agree with your take on black or brown with white soles)?
Patterned socks? Are those out of style? I'm not talking loud colors or cartoon characters but argyles, stripes, dots, checkered. I don't know about anyone else but several women I know notice socks for some reason. Thoughts?
How can socks that should be washed cold be recommended? I think socks should be washed in 60 degrees C to prevent fungus etc to grow. I also think it would be interesting with underwear in general, not only socks.
If I didn't luck out in several ways, I wouldn't be able to afford a place to live. (Thanks to my ex for teaching me to be extremely frugal.) I have to make due on much less than most. I have a pair of black toe cap oxfords for formal and semi formal. My blackish Keens sandals get the bulk of use. I have blackish hiking shoes for occasional walking and triking. I have black dance shoes. As always, I'm willing to pay more for quality, but that obviously limits variety, in my case. One good suit. A couple pairs of good pants for semi-formal. Black long sleeve shirts for formal or semi-formal. Several short sleeved shirts in black, burgundy, and red. Several nice silk ties. Black socks. A pair of blue jeans. Most seasons I wear black gym shorts as general wear. Obviously, I also run in different circles than you. I'm also sure we are both generally happy with our situations, though having more choice is something we would also like more of. Classic is always in style. Maybe I'll win a small lottery and have to completely review all of your videos :-D
Hi! I like your channel. I am an Icelander and live in a town called Hafnarfjörður which means fjord for harbor for ship. I am retired, but I really enjoy wearing well-made clothes that fit my personality. I'm going to watch a few episodes because I need to renew my shoes, pants, shirt, t-shirts and socks.
I concur with the majority of the selections presented, with the exception of the loafers. In my view, the loafers lack aesthetic appeal, particularly due to their design elements. The left pair, embellished with a buckle, seems to adopt an unnecessarily feminized style, while the right pair is marred by an unsightly crease.
👌🏼 Your sweater is really cool, exactly my kind of style. My dress shoes are mostly in their closet. I have several boots for colder times and in the warmer times i mostly wear convers in different colors or white tennis-shoes. I don't like these white leather sneaker and no dark colors for sneaker. I have most of your mentioned pieces. But i want some nice oxfords(have only derby) I always wanted to have a black pair of dress shoes😁 but every time i left the shop with brown. Chinos aren't my thing, i prefer the same material but 5-pocket style. Your dressy pants are cool but i wouldn't mix with a patterned jacket. I like very much linnen stye + light color jackets. But i have to say i barely need something above smart casual. Here in germany, even in expensive restaurants, you don't need a tie. Here i see.. the more success or money the more casual the look.... exept your company has dress code. Their enjoy of casualness is their statement: I've made it and have nothing to proove anymore, i leave my porsche/bentley in jeans+polo. But this applies only for the cool+fit men, the uncle Barrys are annother world😉
Good video! I may like to add vests (waistcoats) to this list. They are often overlooked because people primarily tend to associate them with business/formal occasions. They can also be worn at semi-formal/smart casual events to elevate your look; royal blue or light grey being the perfect color.
It's seem you are very professional in style.and I learn how To be more stylish even I am 65 style dress up very nice and I gets lots of compliments. And add up you good elegant style..I watch all you videos.
I have to say that this video would have a lot of value to anyone finding your channel for the first time. It just encapsulates the whole idea of what your channel is all about. Thank you!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Lol. That would be me.
Very helpful!

I am 60 and still wear white sneakers with shorts….
Who said you can’t wear shorts after 40 years of age…..
Keep going Johno
Great video!! 🦘
Exactly!!
Just because you can doesn't mean you should!
All black shoes with black soles, unless they are dressy shoes, tend to look like orthotic shoes.
John, I am telling you. You are the consummate male fashion consultant. I strongly believe that you have the eye to outfit just about any man. That said, I have almost 100% of what you presented in this video. You are a valuable asset to the fashion industry for men. Well done!

Fashion is what you resort to when you have no personal style. You have a choice. Be yourself or follow somebody else - baaa!
There's always gonna be some weirdo who disagrees with the masses
Black sneakers look too much like the old school football “Coach” shoes.
I just noticed my wardrobe slowly turned into gray, black, blue and white. A couple colorful pieces and shoes over sneakers.
Good stuff. I like that your shirts don't have any brand logos other than on the inside label. I have a few with a little logo sewn on the breast pocket, like the little Polo or Brooks Brothers logo, but I try to avoid it if I can. Total person preference.
Agreed!

May I ask, what brand is the shirt you're wearing in the video? And what brand chino's do you prefer?
It’s a lightweight sweater from Weston Bouchér. I have several brands of chinos that I like. Banana republic, Bonobos, express, and perk.
Great video. Agree 100% about the metal eyelets on sneakers, wish Thursday would get away from them.
I wear a size 15 shoe and I’m looking for some sneakers. Trying to decide between Koio and Oliver Cabell at this point. Any suggestions?
I have had both, and they’re both great options in my opinion.
Here in Western Canada one needs to seriously adjust for weather and style.
John, loafers and derbys are my favorites ... can wear with anything from suits to jeans.
Absolutely!
Absolutely! I generally stick with White, but I have done brown sneakers with shorts.
Terrific commentary as usual John. 😊❤🎉💯 🙏.
Thank you!
I would recommend a navy blue blazer as well.
Good addition!
Hey @John, how do you view this shoe curation that leans towards minimalism or capsule wardrobe:
1. Oxford Black Boot with Brogue
2. Chelsea Boot Medium/Dark Brown
3. Dress Sneaker White
4. Penny Loafers Medium/Dark Brown
5. Double Monk Strap Burgundy
6. Slip-in Sneakers
*I'm a boots guy, so listed formal boots instead of shoes :)
Great list!
Your comment means a lot to me
Absolute staples for any man;
1 pair plain white trainers
1 pair Adidas Originals Samba Super/Gazelle/Spezial
1 pair Chelsea boots
1 pair Levis 501s or 511s
1 white shirt
1 leather jacket
1 plain black t shirt
1 navy blazer/sport coat
There are dozens of looks you can achieve just from that short list, and they will all look amazing
I have two really good rules that I follow when it comes to kitting out my wardrobe and how I dress.

I have to say, when explaining and holding up garments, it’s wonderful to see a man with nice hands/nails. I appreciate that. Great basic content!
Thank you!
Yep 👍🏻. I don’t understand why men would sport chewed off nails and ratty cuticles rather than manicured. We use our hands in handshakes, to write with, to gesture in business meetings. People may not say anything, BUT THEY NOTICE! A manicure every two weeks keeps hands clean and in check. 😉👍🏻

Love it! Congratulations on the workouts and welcome back!
Good list, I agree about the solid black sneakers, they remind me of what servers in restaurants wear.
Right?! Exactly!
Hi John, great video! I too love the look of the brown and black sneakers with the white soles. Can you please share what brands these are?
Right! Because I have a pair of brown and grey ones. They are of a rather expensive European brand and yet I sorted both pairs out, they are not comfortable at all. A bummer and wasted money.
They are from Thursday sneakers
Thanks John. This is the video I always wanted. I need to completely redo my wardrobe and had felt frustrated that I didn't know where to start. Your video is a blessing.
Awesome!
Well someone won’t be getting Goodfellow’s and Co sponsorship. 😂! But a tan or blue Harrington is a must for spring/fall edit navy blue
Good grief! Watching this video is like you're saying, "Man, you're on the right track." For brown dress sneakers, I prefer the ones with black soles, I think they look more dressy. As always, great video, John! Thank You!
Outfit ideas/advice for patterned pants? I know it can look... odd if the patterns are too bold/not part of a suit ensemable.
I made a video like this about five years ago. Maybe it’s time for an update!
@@40OverFashion Oh Pleasae!
Basic is pretty much the same every day.
3-4 colours all year round that match among them.
Brown leather boots any day, brown shoes the odd day.
Simples.
Review Tom Ford Leather Jackets, Suede coats and Pea Coats. Maybe Oxfords, Loafers and Boots too! Dont wanna see these mall-brand stuff!
Where I live, Doha, few people wear jeans, they just look so outdated, especially blue. Just my opinion.
As a man over 40 living in California there’s really only one thing you have to get right. Your wallet. Those that live in California know exactly what I’m talking about.
Hi John, really love your videos but I haven't notice you ever talk about underwear. Maybe I missed it. Any recommendations, styles or brand to avoid?
I would wear green chinos, Brown Dr martens Loafers and blue socks and a dark blue shirt.
I think it all comes down to the nuances and style in the clothing, nothing bright in my wardrope.
Always great tips. Been following for a few years and always wondered what you would suggest men like me do when it comes to tucked in shirts or polos. Iam 37 and fit would a navy and white sleeve plain Varsity jacket look good for my age
I have watched several videos on people discussing shoes, why doesnt anyone mention boat shoes? I alwasy lke them as a casual wear
Anyone know where those pattern trousers are from?
The blue ones are from Penguin that I picked up at Nordstrom rack, and the gray ones are actually from Zara.
Who makes the sweater you have on in this video?
It’s from Weston Bouchér.
I do not particularly like suede of any kind because if you spill red wine or sauce on it it is hard to clean them, and when you do clean them the texture becomes smooth, disaster in my opinion.
What do you think about Chelsea boots?
I like them! I have a few pairs.
John do you have a video for basics in hot weather / beach which would be more shorts and colours? Thanks
I live in a pretty hot climate myself, and I’ve done a bunch of videos on shorts and linen, but absolutely expect something more coming later this spring. Stay tuned!

It’s from Weston Bouchér.
Hi john, thanks for your videos. Your videos really inspire me & trust me i have been trying to look for some content for people like me over 40. You have just made it so easy for me bro! Thanks once again. 🙏

Hey, thanks! Yes, I was there!
LOL i have yet to branch out with socks every sock i own is solid black
One of your best style videos John!! I prefer the white sneakers with gum soles and I too prefer the black, navy, brown sneakers with white soles - Weston Jon Boucher has some great products that all fit great - will def be checking out their polos - you mentioned quite a few items I need to pick up in 2024! Live well John! 🫡
Appreciate you Chris!
Plaid suits are the new leisure suit. Hopefully they will be gone soon.
Great tips. Recently started with upgrading all my shoes with some loafers and sneakers similar to the one's shown. Much more to go, but its a start
Great to hear!
agree about the all-black sneakers; I have matching pairs of onitsuka tigers, one white, one black, and the black pair doesn't seem be worn nearly as often; somehow, it lacks substance.
Agreed!
I’m really tall at 6ft 6 I’ve seen boots are better for tall guys over shoes, do you agree?
John, I like how you clarified “button down” collar shirts versus “button up” shirts. LEGEND You’ve taught me well. I have every piece you mentioned in this video! And that includes the polos you talked about, Thursday boots and jackets from The Jacket Maker! Thanks for another great video, John!
Great to hear! Appreciate you!
What are the brand names of the jeans and chinos being shown in this video?
Love your videos, could you please tell me about the shirt you’re wearing in this video?
Of course! It’s from Weston Bouchér.
No links to the items in video!?
Sorry, I guess I was just showing those as examples. I should do more of that in the future. Thank you!
Where do you buy your chinos?
I like bonobos, perk, express, and banana Republic.
Thanks for another good video John. I just purchased some socks using your link. Cheers!
Enjoy! Thank you!
I stopped wearing jeans when I turned 30.
Loving the back to the basics videos. We all go off the rails sometimes and need a reset.
Very true!
I can't stick to Loafer's my feet don't appreciate it any alternative in a way?
What brand of jeans and chinos do you like?
Well done John. All good info!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
How do you clean or maintain your white sneakers from turning yellow?
Search Amazon for Crep shoe cleaner.
I generally can’t stand wearing polos, but getting some nice polos with texture is a great idea and I think I’ll try to find one!
Yeah, give it a shot! You might be surprised!
I only wear shark socks but that’s just me
Always on point and very informative you are a blessing. Thank you for all you do ❤
I appreciate that! Thank you Larry!
Solid video!
I agree on the black sneakers with the white sole. I have a pair of all-black sneakers, but I find myself not wearing them most days. I guess white is just more versatile for my wardrobe.
Thank you!
I’ve ticked off several boxes on the shoe line, brown and white but instead of black I went with navy. Looks great dressed slightly up or down.
I saw online recently a pair of black sneakers with a gum sole. I've never been a big white sneaker fan, so what do you think of the idea of black with a gum sole (I agree with your take on black or brown with white soles)?
Yeah, I’ve seen that too. I’m not sure I like the black shoe with the gum sole.
0OverFashion Thanks. I'll probably wind up with a pair of the white with gum sole eventually.
Patterned socks? Are those out of style? I'm not talking loud colors or cartoon characters but argyles, stripes, dots, checkered. I don't know about anyone else but several women I know notice socks for some reason. Thoughts?
Those crazy wacky socks are out of style. I don’t think Argyle ever went out of style.
Enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot. Specifically asking, what color socks does one wear with light tan or stone chinos and brown loafers?
I would say Medium Brown socks.
I consider chinos casual. I will pull straight from 1956 and wear colored socks that match my shirt or sweater
How can socks that should be washed cold be recommended? I think socks should be washed in 60 degrees C to prevent fungus etc to grow. I also think it would be interesting with underwear in general, not only socks.
I wash everything in cold. You do you.
Button down collars…. Never
suede jacket, great suggestion, thanks.
socks match pants - will try this out…
Perfect! Thanks for watching!
What about white slip on Vans shoes ( tennis shoe)
Great video as usual. Quick question: what brand are those black oxfords? They are beautiful.
I’ve had those for a couple years now from Beckett Simonon
@@40OverFashion Thank you!
Hi, what is the brand of the chinos?
Sir you nailed these choices. Headed to my local Nordstrom asap lol
Thanks for watching!
Would never wear any of the boots
John. What a great video. Brilliant ideas! Appreciated.
Glad you enjoyed it!
But this applies only for the cool+fit men, the uncle Barrys are annother world😉
Thanks John, very helpful, got some good ideas.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
