I have to say that this video would have a lot of value to anyone finding your channel for the first time. It just encapsulates the whole idea of what your channel is all about. Thank you!
John, I am telling you. You are the consummate male fashion consultant. I strongly believe that you have the eye to outfit just about any man. That said, I have almost 100% of what you presented in this video. You are a valuable asset to the fashion industry for men. Well done!
John, I follow you all the time and really appreciate your advice. I have followed a ton of it. There are a few good RUclipsrs in the men's fashion space, but you are the only one really concentrating on our age demographic, which is outstanding. The only things I would add to this list are a few must-have, basic accessories. Namely, belts to match your shoe choices (except for the white sneakers), one good pair of sunglasses in your favorite style (but not "sport" sunglasses), and a nice watch on a bracelet (probably stainless steel).
Totally agree Daniel. Particularly about sunglasses, a watch, and a bracelet. All of those can be found with good craftsmanship, understated, and classy without breaking the bank. About eight years ago, or so, I found the sunglass brand "Raen". I own four pairs of their glasses, and all were discounted. I'm NOT paying $150 to $200 or more. Same thing for a couple of brand name watches, and two simple, classy bracelets. A little time spent searching "discount" whatever on the internet can really pay off. All the best, Mark
I am updating my wardrobe for the past 3 years, step by step. This video puts everything together perfectly! I couldn’t think of a better capsule wardrobe.
I literally emptied out my closet today and donated everything to Goodwill. My clothes were so outdated. It’s time to go hit the Nordstrom rack and get ready for Spring. Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I needed.
Yep 👍🏻. I don’t understand why men would sport chewed off nails and ratty cuticles rather than manicured. We use our hands in handshakes, to write with, to gesture in business meetings. People may not say anything, BUT THEY NOTICE! A manicure every two weeks keeps hands clean and in check. 😉👍🏻
Thanks John. This is the video I always wanted. I need to completely redo my wardrobe and had felt frustrated that I didn't know where to start. Your video is a blessing.
I really love all your advice, but feel like I need to lose a lot of weight before I worry about building a new wardrobe, but great ideas for my future.
@@40OverFashion I have started dieting and exercising these last 2 weeks after watching many of your videos but only dropped 4 lb. I want to dress better, but know I need to lose the weight as well. Hopefully I can.
This is timely for me John. I lean more towards classics. I’ve been away from the channel for a while but I’m back. I’m a little older (60s) and, like you, realized that without a trainer I was never going to get back in shape again. Lifting weighs and doing the cardio. It’s been about five weeks. I’m down probably 6 or seven pounds losing fat and building muscle. Nothing fits and I’m not sure where I’m going to end up. I have very few clothes left to wear. And what I can wear are skinny jeans, not great, to say the least. So this is great for when I decide what to buy again. Thanks for clarifying the grey tints. I think 150 lbs. is the target and I’m down from 165 or so. I have the sweaters at least, some decent outer wear. And good shoes from Allen Edmonds, but really nothing else.
Thanks for the collared shirt mention. Loathe t shirts for myself unless they are layered. Collared shirt for any restaurant where an order is taken at the table.
Hi! I like your channel. I am an Icelander and live in a town called Hafnarfjörður which means fjord for harbor for ship. I am retired, but I really enjoy wearing well-made clothes that fit my personality. I'm going to watch a few episodes because I need to renew my shoes, pants, shirt, t-shirts and socks.
L.L. Bean has a very deep collection of shirts, polo, T-shirts, sweaters/shirts, sweaters, jeans. Their Double L Polo's are very nice & won't break the budget plus looks great after many years.
Good advice. I would also suggest talking about belts as a wardrobe basic. It's important to have the leather belt's color coordinate with the shoes otherwise the overall look becomes disjointed. I tend to like woven leather belts to go with jeans and smooth leather with a subdued buckle for a dressier look.
Personally, I am a sweater addict. I stopped counting at 80. I have them in every style, color and texture. They are all high quality and will last for years.
Right! Because I have a pair of brown and grey ones. They are of a rather expensive European brand and yet I sorted both pairs out, they are not comfortable at all. A bummer and wasted money.
John, I like how you clarified “button down” collar shirts versus “button up” shirts. If you think about it, button down collar shirts are actually button up shirts, but does anybody actually button their shirts from the bottom up? I don’t think so, most people button their shirts down from top to bottom. Reminds me of Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on first?” shtick.
Absolute staples for any man; 1 pair plain white trainers 1 pair Adidas Originals Samba Super/Gazelle/Spezial 1 pair Chelsea boots 1 pair Levis 501s or 511s 1 white shirt 1 leather jacket 1 plain black t shirt 1 navy blazer/sport coat There are dozens of looks you can achieve just from that short list, and they will all look amazing I have two really good rules that I follow when it comes to kitting out my wardrobe and how I dress. 1. Put some thought into how you choose your outfit, put your clothes on with care, then forget you're wearing them 2. Would Daniel Craig's James Bond wear it? (he's the only Bond who can pull off 'casual')
One of your best style videos John!! I prefer the white sneakers with gum soles and I too prefer the black, navy, brown sneakers with white soles - Weston Jon Boucher has some great products that all fit great - will def be checking out their polos - you mentioned quite a few items I need to pick up in 2024! Live well John! 🫡
Solid video! I agree on the black sneakers with the white sole. I have a pair of all-black sneakers, but I find myself not wearing them most days. I guess white is just more versatile for my wardrobe.
LEGEND You’ve taught me well. I have every piece you mentioned in this video! And that includes the polos you talked about, Thursday boots and jackets from The Jacket Maker! Thanks for another great video, John!
Good video! I may like to add vests (waistcoats) to this list. They are often overlooked because people primarily tend to associate them with business/formal occasions. They can also be worn at semi-formal/smart casual events to elevate your look; royal blue or light grey being the perfect color.
Hi john, thanks for your videos. Your videos really inspire me & trust me i have been trying to look for some content for people like me over 40. You have just made it so easy for me bro! Thanks once again. 🙏
agree about the all-black sneakers; I have matching pairs of onitsuka tigers, one white, one black, and the black pair doesn't seem be worn nearly as often; somehow, it lacks substance.
Good stuff. I like that your shirts don't have any brand logos other than on the inside label. I have a few with a little logo sewn on the breast pocket, like the little Polo or Brooks Brothers logo, but I try to avoid it if I can. Total person preference.
Hey @John, how do you view this shoe curation that leans towards minimalism or capsule wardrobe: 1. Oxford Black Boot with Brogue 2. Chelsea Boot Medium/Dark Brown 3. Dress Sneaker White 4. Penny Loafers Medium/Dark Brown 5. Double Monk Strap Burgundy 6. Slip-in Sneakers *I'm a boots guy, so listed formal boots instead of shoes :)
On boots...what is your opinion around western boots vs chukka boots? I've grown up wearing western boots my entire life and, while I'm trying to elevate my wardrobe, I'm hoping that western boots would work.
Yeah, I don’t have a problem with Western style boots, it’s just not something that I grew up with or know much about. What I’ve seen out in public looks nice.
Just curious about what your take is on wearing athletic shoes in a casual setting. The sneakers you showed look great but can get uncomfortable if I’m on my feet all day or doing a lot of walking. I think a clean pair of running shoes can compliment jeans and shorts. Great video👍
That’s interesting, I wear those shoes out all day, and never have a problem with them getting uncomfortable. Now yes, running shoes would be more supportive, but also not appropriate unless you’re running or exercising.
I live in a pretty hot climate myself, and I’ve done a bunch of videos on shorts and linen, but absolutely expect something more coming later this spring. Stay tuned!
I prefer black tennis shoes over white because until someone's close they look more formal and no one wears white dress shoes so with white it obvious from a distance you're wearing sneakers. Also white shows dirt more.
I really enjoy watching your videos. They are very very helpful. Keep on showing what we should wear. So, if we are on the western cowboy side, do you have any ideas for us? I like and use your advice when not wearing western way.
Evey man should have at least one suit - even if they wont wear it much. Navy or dark gray. If you pick the right kind of suit, you can use the jacket as stand alone blazer as well. Two for one.
As always, great tips. And I wasn't aware of the Weston Jon Boucher brand, but it looks very stylish, so thank you. Do you think that it will hold up well for a few years? And do you have/wear things apart from the polo?
Great video. Agree 100% about the metal eyelets on sneakers, wish Thursday would get away from them. I wear a size 15 shoe and I’m looking for some sneakers. Trying to decide between Koio and Oliver Cabell at this point. Any suggestions?
Good grief! Watching this video is like you're saying, "Man, you're on the right track." For brown dress sneakers, I prefer the ones with black soles, I think they look more dressy. As always, great video, John! Thank You!

I saw online recently a pair of black sneakers with a gum sole. I've never been a big white sneaker fan, so what do you think of the idea of black with a gum sole (I agree with your take on black or brown with white soles)?
Re the brown sneakers, are they appropriate when wearing shorts? I'm normally a top-sider kind of guy, but I'm thinking I should leave my preppy side behind and move over to the sneaker. Consider a pair of khaki chino shorts or perhaps even navy. What's the shoe option?
I can’t get behind not wearing tshirts. At least for my personal life, they’re my go to. It’s rare I wear buttons and collars. I work outdoors and have many formal or even kinda formal events in my life. A nice well fitting Tshirt works plenty well enough.
John, I think you missed a side note about dress shirts. Spread collar shirts are dressier and intended to be worn with a tie that has a full Windsor knot and not a four-in-hand knot.
Always great tips. Been following for a few years and always wondered what you would suggest men like me do when it comes to tucked in shirts or polos. I suffer from a form of arthritis that makes my back arch forward making my torso look disproportionately shorter. Being a tall slim guy with long legs, tucking in anything makes me look like the top of my pants are way too high compared to the length of my legs . Making it awkward to wear a jacket with a tucked shirt or polo. Any suggestions/tips?
👌🏼 Your sweater is really cool, exactly my kind of style. My dress shoes are mostly in their closet. I have several boots for colder times and in the warmer times i mostly wear convers in different colors or white tennis-shoes. I don't like these white leather sneaker and no dark colors for sneaker. I have most of your mentioned pieces. But i want some nice oxfords(have only derby) I always wanted to have a black pair of dress shoes😁 but every time i left the shop with brown. Chinos aren't my thing, i prefer the same material but 5-pocket style. Your dressy pants are cool but i wouldn't mix with a patterned jacket. I like very much linnen stye + light color jackets. But i have to say i barely need something above smart casual. Here in germany, even in expensive restaurants, you don't need a tie. Here i see.. the more success or money the more casual the look.... exept your company has dress code. Their enjoy of casualness is their statement: I've made it and have nothing to proove anymore, i leave my porsche/bentley in jeans+polo. But this applies only for the cool+fit men, the uncle Barrys are annother world😉
Hello John I follow your advice n I live in SW Florida n would like your advice on what to wear here where it’s hot most of the time , also styles to where to church. Thank you
Love suede but i live in a wet climate, rain snow, slush ice, and suede is too labour intensive to keep it dry n clean. I will stay with reg leather...same for jackets
rain snow - get some dressier leather boots that have storm welts, and rubber soles. Not all do. I am a big fan of chromexcel leather for wet environments.

Thank you
Sound advice. good man !
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
LOL i have yet to branch out with socks every sock i own is solid black
Love suede but i live in a wet climate, rain snow, slush ice, and suede is too labour intensive to keep it dry n clean. I will stay with reg leather...same for jackets
rain snow - get some dressier leather boots that have storm welts, and rubber soles. Not all do. I am a big fan of chromexcel leather for wet environments.
Bout time for a new fragrance episode
Agreed! I just got some new ones in, so thanks for the reminder!
